- 0:17All right, good afternoon. Welcome, Miller and Condon on a
- 0:20Tuesday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:23Network, Trent Condon and Ken Miller for the next two hours to
- 0:27talk sports with you. Thank you for starting your
- 0:29afternoon with us wherever you are in the state of Iowa.
- 0:32Grateful that you are here. Coming up on the program, not a
- 0:36lot going on our number one, but certainly in our number 2.
- 0:39The guest list ramps up. Frank Schwab is in the midst of
- 0:43doing his countdown of NFL teams.
- 0:45He unveils starts at 32, works his way down to #1 believe he
- 0:49was at 25 and never checked today.
- 0:51Last couple of days, the New York teams have both arrived in
- 0:54it. Well, it's brutal when you see
- 0:56your team in the 20s, know what lies ahead in most cases.
- 0:58Not that he's always right, but you get the drift.
- 1:00Frank Schwab coming up at 1:00. We'll talk NFL with Frank Schwab
- 1:04from yahoosports.com. And then Scott Dockerman's got a
- 1:08terrific piece in The Athletic today.
- 1:10Last week when he joined us, Trent, he mentioned that he's
- 1:13working on a piece with Kirk Ference had a sit down with Kirk
- 1:17Ference that was published this morning at the Athletic.
- 1:19And man, oh man, just when you think you know the man or you
- 1:22think you would have an idea he could have been more off.
- 1:26I mean, he's he's he's all he's embracing what's going on in
- 1:29college sports as far as the payments to the athletes,
- 1:32etcetera. And good for you, Kirk Ference
- 1:34being willing to change and everybody has to at some point.
- 1:37So we'll talk to Doc about that and other topics when he joins
- 1:40us about 125. Trump will make some picks at
- 1:43150 Circa Sports sponsor those and away we go to turn things
- 1:47over to the drive today with Lucas and Sean as Heather did
- 1:51the morning. Now she's gone.
- 1:53She's she's off on a an Alaska cruise.
- 1:55Is that where it was? Alaska?
- 1:56This. Yeah.
- 1:57I lose track of all of her trips, boy.
- 1:58She's a world traveller, right? I mean, she gets home for a
- 2:00couple of weeks and boom, off to Ireland.
- 2:03Not too shabby. I couldn't do it.
- 2:06That's a that's a lot of travel, but good.
- 2:08Good for her. My parents took Alaska cruises.
- 2:10Raved the bottom. Yeah.
- 2:11Raved the bottom. In fact, went back another year,
- 2:14the very next year because they just couldn't get out of their
- 2:17minds. So hopefully she has a good
- 2:18time, but she'll be gone for a couple of weeks.
- 2:20And this afternoon, Sean and Lucas will take the afternoon
- 2:24show. So you had a little sojourn of
- 2:27your own? I did.
- 2:28Trent, it was a disaster. Thanks for asking.
- 2:30No, again. Yeah.
- 2:32You know we can't win so. You can't you in terms of
- 2:35vacations, trips. Yeah, we got snowed in when we
- 2:38were going to Colorado, right, and for our winter vacation.
- 2:41So this year, we're flying over it, yes.
- 2:43That makes more sense. Jumping on a plane.
- 2:46But so we ran into place in Dubuque.
- 2:49I thought we were in Galena, but we were in Dubuque and we
- 2:51weren't in Galena because Galena was mobbed this weekend.
- 2:54There's a place to be mobbed. Yes.
- 2:56So we check into our place. It was built in 1886.
- 2:59Nice old home. That's cool.
- 3:01It is. It's up on a bluff.
- 3:02So first of all, you get out of the car and Oh my God, I walk
- 3:05all those stairs and, and I'm the the pack mule cause Jeff's
- 3:09not carrying anything and Cindy's not going to.
- 3:12But that aside. So we get in, figure everything
- 3:14out. Looks like a nice place.
- 3:17Love Dubuque. I've been there once before.
- 3:19Really thought it was cool and sitting out on the deck and all
- 3:24of a sudden you could, I could hear something under the deck.
- 3:26And then, you know, kind of what's going on.
- 3:27Must be a squirrel or something, right?
- 3:30So Jet's running around in the backyard and Jet's a little dog,
- 3:33right? And all of a sudden up from
- 3:35under the deck comes a woodchuck, a female woodchuck
- 3:40with two baby woodchucks, OK. And we're not happy with Jet and
- 3:46Jet wasn't happy with them. And the woodchuck started to
- 3:48come towards Jet and I snatched him up and we came home on
- 3:52Saturday. So odd enough of that.
- 3:54Got there Friday, home on Saturday, supposed to come home
- 3:57yesterday. It's just, it's just incredible
- 4:00the streak of luck that we're on with these things.
- 4:03Are woodchucks mean? Well, this one was, I, I guess
- 4:07any animal with babies, very protective, very protective and
- 4:11elevates a little bit. And I wasn't going to find out
- 4:13if Jet was going to beat the Woodchuck or the woodchuck was
- 4:15going to be Jet, because that's the last thing I needed was a
- 4:18vet bill because they do get pricey.
- 4:21So anyways, we checked, we stayed for a little bit on
- 4:24Saturday and got in the car and came home and did nothing.
- 4:27Nothing. Watched the NBA Finals on on
- 4:31Sunday. I'm sure I know you talked about
- 4:33it yesterday because I know what type of show you do.
- 4:36It's just that the whole Halliburton thing, right?
- 4:39It kind of overshadows the win doesn't.
- 4:41It oh, it still does, and I think it will.
- 4:42National or is it just here? No, it's national.
- 4:45Yeah. I think, you know, listening to
- 4:47some other places and and it's a huge part of the picture.
- 4:51You had this so unlikely team and the Pacers were if they
- 4:55would have won the most unlikely champion we probably ever had in
- 4:59the NBA. And they're on the precipice of
- 5:01that. Yes.
- 5:02And the way that Halliburton came out, Oh my.
- 5:03God, he's on fire. You know, if we we saw Game 5
- 5:05Halliburton, OK, we saw the heights of Halliburton.
- 5:09He was about. To take over he was away, scored
- 5:11nine points in 7 minutes. Van Pelt said something I
- 5:14thought really interesting, he said.
- 5:17There's probably one person on that planet at that time that
- 5:18had that feeling. SGA wasn't feeling that.
- 5:21No, I thought, I thought he was tight.
- 5:23Absolutely. You know, they missed a ton of
- 5:25shots. And we talk about that rare
- 5:26fight era when we talk about Michael Jordan and those clutch
- 5:29moments and we talk about the greats.
- 5:31Those are the moments. And for those first 6 minutes, 6
- 5:35minutes and 55 seconds, it felt like this could be Tyrese
- 5:39Halliburton's time because he was carrying himself differently
- 5:43than anybody else on the floor. He looked like he was feeling
- 5:45different than anybody else on the floor.
- 5:48And then not just to go down, but you knew right away.
- 5:51You knew it as soon as you slowed it down.
- 5:53You saw the replay, but you know, rolling up his calf.
- 5:56You see that? Siren Rogers.
- 5:58Same deal exactly. You go back to Durant, go to
- 6:01Kobe, you look at all the different times and the three
- 6:05Times Now it's happened this playoff to star players.
- 6:08All wearing #0. All wearing #0.
- 6:10I mean, come on. And you go through that now I
- 6:14mentioned yesterday as David Eichelt was sitting in with.
- 6:16Oh, good, Yeah. I thought, you know, that middle
- 6:20kind of lull the second quarter, it was almost like the Thunder
- 6:23were more impacted even than the Pacers because the Pacers were,
- 6:26hey, let's pick each other up. We're still here to win.
- 6:28The Thunder, just what's going on?
- 6:30It was that the energy of the crowd at the beginning compared
- 6:33to what it was throughout most of the second quarter, it was
- 6:35just, it was so weird. And the whole picture comes back
- 6:39to Tyrese Halliburton. And look, if the Thunder go on
- 6:41and they win, 3 the next 4, you know, 4, the next six, OK, this
- 6:45was step one. And remember how tough it was
- 6:47against the Pacers? That'll be the conversation.
- 6:50But if this is it for the Thunder, if they have their own
- 6:52injury, if they get upset next year in the plastic, if it just
- 6:55doesn't click for whatever. The last seven years say that it
- 6:57is it is going to be it for the and if if that's.
- 6:59The case, I think this thing's going to be painted in a
- 7:02different way, but the Pacers are going to be remembered for a
- 7:05team that lost in the Finals, I think, for a really long time.
- 7:08And Tyrese Halliburton a huge part of that.
- 7:11But I just enjoyed watching this Pacers team so much.
- 7:14We've talked about McConnell, the Thunder great defensive
- 7:18team, don't like the way SGA, you know, hunts for free throws.
- 7:23And because of that, I was rooting for the Pacers.
- 7:25I and I just love the stories of these guys, the way they were
- 7:28built. It it's it will be a very
- 7:30memorable team. I know for me.
- 7:31Now I'm I'm with you. Is, is Dagnell, the Thunder
- 7:34coach, the least recognizable championship coach in any sport
- 7:38in history? Very well could be.
- 7:39I mean, seriously, right? Yeah.
- 7:41That's a good list, going through and looking at the list
- 7:44of of. Forgettable coaches.
- 7:45Who is this guy and how how did his team win?
- 7:47Yes, I mean, he's got to be I'm not I'm not minimizing his
- 7:50coaching ability. He just coached champion.
- 7:53But I mean, you could seriously get 10 sports fans give put them
- 7:57in a police lineup and pick out, you know, the NBA coach, a lot
- 7:59of them would miss. I I think you could have 100
- 8:01people and I don't know how many.
- 8:02If you get more in a handful that'd be able to name him.
- 8:05I didn't tell Sunday night. I don't know if I would have
- 8:07even as much Thunder as I watched throughout the playoffs.
- 8:10It's just unassuming, you know, younger guy got that jet black
- 8:14hair and. Did you think that there was a
- 8:17chance late in the game that Oh my God, the Patriot just not
- 8:21going away, They're going to end up covering this game.
- 8:23Did what did you do in the game? Did you, did you take the points
- 8:25or did you play period? I laid it, I laid the seven.
- 8:28Did you on Sunday? So were you a little nervous at
- 8:31all 'cause it was getting a little 'cause it was 10, right,
- 8:33It got it was 10? It got to 10 and I said that
- 8:37with David yesterday. So when it got to 10, it was
- 8:41just that moment. Any other team this thing's over
- 8:44because of what we saw from the Pacers, though, throughout this
- 8:47playoffs, it had that They can't do this again, Kenneth, but if
- 8:51Albert, But if there was one team, even minus Halliburton,
- 8:54that you would say could do it, it was this squad.
- 8:56And that's why I think a lot of people became enamored with them
- 9:00because of that. Yes, we have the local angle,
- 9:02but I think on a national level they became a team that was just
- 9:05so fun to. Root for the country, Trent.
- 9:08Yeah, because you saw the the the numbers for game seven were
- 9:11astronomical for two small quote, small market franchises
- 9:16nobody's gonna watch. I mean, how many times did you
- 9:18hear that leading up to it? I'm sure we said it, but but
- 9:22people did watch and I think they were entertained.
- 9:24And then it's just what could have been.
- 9:26You'll never know, right? You'll never know.
- 9:28But man, the start that he had, and this isn't going to be any
- 9:32time. Well, you'll see him in
- 9:33November. No, you won't.
- 9:35You may not see him in 2000. This upcoming season 2526, he
- 9:39may not be able to answer the bell.
- 9:41But that's probably the likelihood of the way it's going
- 9:43to go for them. And now something we didn't get
- 9:46to yesterday is outside of Cleveland.
- 9:50Who wins the East? Who is it Orlando?
- 9:52Should Orlando be the second choice?
- 9:54And I haven't looked at the odds to win the East, but after going
- 9:57out, the one thing they needed was shooting.
- 9:59They go out and get a great shooter.
- 10:02Is the Orlando Magic, should they be the second choice?
- 10:05They got some good young dudes. You're not going to have Jason
- 10:07Tatum with the. Celtics.
- 10:08No, they don't. Completely reinvent themselves
- 10:10in the way that they're going. To trade a drew holiday today.
- 10:13They are going to look so much different and maybe this is just
- 10:16going to be here, that for all intents and purposes, they punt.
- 10:19Cleveland didn't get it done again in the playoffs.
- 10:22They lost in the second round to this Pacers team on the Pacers.
- 10:25Knicks apparently are going to go into the season without a
- 10:26head coach. They're I saw they're
- 10:28interviewing the T. Wolves assistant.
- 10:30I saw that. Yeah.
- 10:32Who? Saw a couple of times last year.
- 10:36There's nobody that you love. I mean, if you're a team like
- 10:39Atlanta, do you make some moves to say there was ever a window?
- 10:43Which right, Young, this is it. And as we know in sport, and I
- 10:48think it's becoming increasingly more rare to be able to create
- 10:51dynasties, those windows close so fast.
- 10:54If you're a team in the East, you got even a glimmer of hope.
- 10:57Go for it this year. Somebody's going to represent
- 10:59them. Yeah, somebody will be there.
- 11:01Somebody will make it. Without Halliburton, you just
- 11:03wonder and as you mentioned, without without Tatum, what does
- 11:06that do to the Celtics next? Don't have a coach.
- 11:09You know, some of the teams that were in there till the bitter
- 11:11end, Cleveland probably would be the favorite.
- 11:14I mean, I would assume right now they're probably the
- 11:16overwhelming favorite. Oh yeah.
- 11:18I mean, they got to be like plus 210 or something like that, I
- 11:21would anticipate. So just to win the to win the
- 11:23East. To win the East.
- 11:24Yeah, conference winner. Here it is.
- 11:25This is from DraftKings in the Eastern Cup.
- 11:27Plus 260 for the Cavaliers. Knicks are the second betting
- 11:31choice of plus 290. Celtics 5 to 1.
- 11:35And there's the magic of plus 550.
- 11:38Desmond Bain coming in knocking out some shots.
- 11:41I like the young nucleus that they have to.
- 11:44You like prices? What are they?
- 11:46Plus 550. Well worth it to have.
- 11:50How about the Pistons at 60? To what you know what this?
- 11:52Is an up and coming team. Rightly is Is there a move for
- 11:55the Pistons that they can make to come in and create?
- 11:59Who, who did they play in the first round of the playoffs?
- 12:01It was gonna do you remember? It was, it was, it was going to
- 12:03be a dogfight. Pistons had a chance.
- 12:06Was it the Knicks? It was the Knicks.
- 12:07It was the Knicks, right? It was the Knicks.
- 12:09You're 100% right and and the Knicks weren't a foregone
- 12:12conclusion in that. I remember that.
- 12:14Now, 'cause it was, what, 4/2 And there were two games that
- 12:17were coin flips right down at the end, right?
- 12:19That very well could have gone their way.
- 12:21Pistons, you got anything that you can do?
- 12:23Well, it's 16 to one. You're hoping if you buy that
- 12:26ticket and put it in your back pocket and sit on it for a
- 12:28while, we'll we'll see where it goes.
- 12:30Baseball from last night, the Cubs are, I mean, what do you
- 12:35got to do with Brown? What do you do with them?
- 12:38He's not going to be a rotational piece for a playoff
- 12:40team. No.
- 12:41No, he's not. You don't need 5.
- 12:43He's a two pitch guy. Do you just do it now?
- 12:47You're going to want to augment the bullpen in some way.
- 12:49Is the time now with? Because he went through the 1st
- 12:52inning last night, Trent, he looked like Sai Young.
- 12:54Well, OK, maybe a little over the top, but he.
- 12:56He can do that the first time through the order, correct?
- 12:58He doesn't do that the second time through.
- 12:59No, I mean it was it was there were 4-2 run home runs that he
- 13:03gave up in the game yesterday. Did he give up all four of them?
- 13:06He get through three of them for sure.
- 13:08Emmanaga is going to be back. Thursday Back Thursday.
- 13:12Yeah. And don't look now.
- 13:13Both the Brewers and the Cardinals are 3 1/2 games back.
- 13:16Of those, Cubs would seem to be on their merry way.
- 13:18Yeah, didn't. Doesn't that seem incredible the
- 13:21way that this Cubs team has played until the last half week?
- 13:25That and they still got a great record, but it sure seems like
- 13:28he where, what are they doing? Milwaukee, though, has played
- 13:31really what Yelich is out of one of those streaks.
- 13:34And that kid that called up with the alphabet name Meskowitz or
- 13:38whatever, so him against the twins.
- 13:40Yeah. That was Friday night, dude.
- 13:42Friday night. An.
- 13:44Absolute because he had a no hitter through how many he was
- 13:47perfect. I think through 6.
- 13:50Jeez. Yeah, Speaking of going the
- 13:52wrong way, that's the Twins, but and then you got the Cardinals.
- 13:54I I still. I don't know how they're doing
- 13:56it. That's.
- 13:57Exactly what I was going to say. How is this team doing this?
- 14:02I don't know. There are a bunch of C + B minus
- 14:07type players. They.
- 14:07Didn't they don't hit home runs yesterday?
- 14:09Hit 4. And that stinks a little bit.
- 14:12You go through the lineup, Burleson, Donovan, both those
- 14:16young guys are hitting well, but just overall it is.
- 14:20Scott can fly, Mason wins. Got a great arm at at the
- 14:23shortstop. I don't get it.
- 14:26I'm right there with you. But I get the.
- 14:28Brewers. It can't be sustainable, right?
- 14:31If you're taking a choice between the two that are going
- 14:33to chase them, I think it is the Brewers.
- 14:35Yet with all that, you look at all the offensive numbers for
- 14:37the Cardinals, their 7th and baseball runs scored.
- 14:41How? Without hitting home.
- 14:42Runs without hitting home runs, Yeah, Speaking of home runs,
- 14:45they are 20th and baseball and home runs.
- 14:47But by the way, small ball and they got the best fans in
- 14:50baseball self. Claims, I guess what's left of
- 14:54them. I mean, they showed the ballpark
- 14:55a couple of times last night, Trent, it's alarming.
- 14:58It's a Monday night, but still, school's out.
- 15:00Sure. And it's Cubs, the Cubs.
- 15:02And it's good thing that the Cubs are in town because they
- 15:04brought a good a good number of fans to that.
- 15:06Game a vocal, though they didn't have a whole lot to cheer about.
- 15:08No, they did not yesterday. Look, the Cardinals got a chance
- 15:12here. If they can take 3 out of four,
- 15:15I mean, who knows where we're going?
- 15:17The Brewers and and they the Cardinals go right back to
- 15:19Wrigley Field next week. So these two teams hadn't waited
- 15:23until this week till they saw each other for the first time.
- 15:25But they're going to see a lot of each other in the next two
- 15:27weeks. What do you think of Libitor?
- 15:29I thought it was great yesterday.
- 15:30He was so bullpen last year, but it was kind of that
- 15:34developmental year, if you will. This was always the plan to
- 15:37bring him back as a starter. When I look at him and I wonder,
- 15:41is there still yet another level?
- 15:43Because what, 25? Maybe 20?
- 15:45He's not very yeah. 25 If there's He's never going to be
- 15:50an ace, probably not even a #2 but can he be a great #3 on a
- 15:54playoff team? I think that's right.
- 15:56I think that's a level that he can hit.
- 15:58The guy that showed up yesterday to pitch is that guy.
- 16:01Then yes, he was really good because the Cubs can hit the
- 16:03baseball. And slowed those bats down.
- 16:06Or the weekend. I'm sure you're watching the
- 16:08Cubs a lot. I did.
- 16:09Hot weather ball flying out. Boy oh boy, you're not kidding.
- 16:13That's Wrigley. What I think of Wrigley Field in
- 16:15the summertime, like the Friday game, those are just the ones
- 16:19that popped to mind. It had that feeling, winds
- 16:21blowing out, making a Wrigley make, having Harry Carey there
- 16:24and Wrigley making the call. That's what I think of the Cubs
- 16:27is kind of weekends like. That it was the first when I
- 16:31immigrated here in 89, it was the first sports venue that I
- 16:34hadn't been to that I got to. I'll never forget the feeling.
- 16:37Just Wrigley Field. Oh my God, I can't believe that
- 16:40I'm here. And then the first time I was
- 16:42able to sit in the bleachers, I was blown away.
- 16:45It was like a nightclub, honestly.
- 16:47The cops sucked, right? But the bleachers were full and,
- 16:50and everybody's like, I, I was 30, yes.
- 16:57So it was different back then and I was single.
- 17:00So that's kind of, you know, I, I was blown away.
- 17:04Old style, slugging them down. Oh my God, and, and guys going
- 17:07to meet women and women going to meet guys.
- 17:09It was like I was, I couldn't believe that this was going on
- 17:12in a ball game. Anyways, I'm glad there was.
- 17:15And it's just, there's just something about that place, just
- 17:18something about Wrigley Field. We'll see where it goes.
- 17:21Well, and this can be a hell of a fight and, and as we
- 17:23mentioned, Cincinnati's playing better, too.
- 17:25They are a nice win over the Yankees yesterday.
- 17:28So they creep back over 500, so where it felt like for the last
- 17:34two months. Yeah, that the Cubs were home
- 17:35free. They were going to coast cruise
- 17:37control tweak, figure out the rotation, get another arm at
- 17:41least for a starting rotation, maybe a bullpen arm and away we
- 17:44go. Now you're going to be in a
- 17:46fight because the likelihood that all three of these teams
- 17:49are all going to drift back, one of them's going to becoming a
- 17:52minimum right? And if you're in that kind of
- 17:55dogs the. Brewers, but man, we'll.
- 17:57See, and I still like the talent of Cincinnati.
- 17:59I do too. I do too, and I like the manager
- 18:02of Cincinnati real quick. So I was working on our script
- 18:04for our media com TV show that we're going to do tomorrow.
- 18:07Yeah, and I was just checking out some college stuff.
- 18:10Did you know the Iowa win total has dropped?
- 18:13We're DraftKings. It's 6 1/2 now.
- 18:15Heavily juiced to the over, but 6 1/2 a draftking because when
- 18:20it came out it was 7 1/2. I was with 7 1/2.
- 18:22I was state was 7 1/2. They mirrored each other.
- 18:25But I was blown away this morning when I when I looked at
- 18:28it that it's down to 6 1/2. So what would be the outside of
- 18:33obviously downside of money? I mean, that's a reason that
- 18:36DraftKings would. Do that.
- 18:37But are they alone, I wonder? I should have looked.
- 18:41As you're handicapping it though, and you're not
- 18:43handicapping it in the state of Iowa, you're handicapping on a
- 18:46national level. You start quarterback
- 18:50nationally, people don't know. Fairpoint, I think they're going
- 18:53to know before long. And I think so too.
- 18:56But if you're somebody nationally, all right, guy
- 18:59making the move up from FCS, probably look at who cares, you
- 19:03know, then you have the memories of the last half decade of
- 19:06offensive football. Ineptitude.
- 19:08Even if you look and say, well, they got a new quarterback, but
- 19:10boy, that offense, according to last year, their passing game
- 19:12still stunk. I'm sure it's pretty easy.
- 19:15And then you couple it with the schedule and a schedule where
- 19:19you go to three of your rivals, you go to Ames, you go to
- 19:22Madison, you have to go to Lincoln.
- 19:24That's tough. You have California trip,
- 19:27California trip regardless of Big 10 opponent, but certainly
- 19:30Iowa takes it to another level, usually disastrous.
- 19:34You have two preseason top seven teams in Penn State and Oregon
- 19:39going to Kin. Last year's number one team
- 19:41going into the playoff? Oregon.
- 19:43You have an Indiana team that won 11 games a year ago on the
- 19:46schedule. That has a that has a
- 19:48quarterback who's one of the favorites to win a Heisman in
- 19:51Mendoza, the transfer from Cal who we both saw last year and
- 19:54thought well. He's an upgrade over what the
- 19:56hell last year with work right? And work was great it.
- 19:58Was really. Mendoza's better.
- 20:00I think he is. I agree.
- 20:01And suddenly we go outside of the borders of the Missouri and
- 20:05Mississippi rivers. You.
- 20:05See what Schiano's doing at Rutgers.
- 20:08And you look at this thing and say, can they get to 7?
- 20:12Like I kind of felt the same way.
- 20:14I can understand when you look at it in that fashion and you
- 20:19say yeah, under certainly when it was 7 and a.
- 20:22Half I was leaning under all day long there, I thought 7:00 and
- 20:255:00. And when we talked about this
- 20:27team back in January when the season concluded, before they
- 20:30had Mark Garnowski before, I said I was almost definitely
- 20:34taking the under regardless of where it came.
- 20:36And I said if it was 6 1/2 do. You remember what it was that
- 20:39with your back of your mind it was going to be.
- 20:40And I thought at the time, 5 1/2 might be a fair number.
- 20:44Now, historically, you say, well, that's silly too, because
- 20:47Kirk Ference has taken teams. Yeah. 8910 games every year,
- 20:50that's what it. Is but off what they lost
- 20:53defensively, passing game, you didn't know what was going to
- 20:57look like. You lose the one offensive piece
- 20:59they had last year and Caleb Johnson, you got to find a left
- 21:01tackle. If they still do.
- 21:03And I think there's a lot of there's a lot of ammunition to
- 21:06go after this Iowa football team and say it's not going to happen
- 21:09this year. Now we're going to talk
- 21:12ourselves into it by August. That's what we do also and we're
- 21:16going to go building it back up. But I can definitely understand
- 21:19the angst about this team and the concern when you look at
- 21:22them overall. Nobody knows these linebackers.
- 21:24No, we haven't seen them. Secondary was not good last
- 21:27year. And you lose your best
- 21:29quarterback in 20 years. CJ Hall took the jump in spring.
- 21:33Right. Right.
- 21:34Or TJ Hall. A lot of guys are taking.
- 21:35The jump, is TJ Hall going to be that?
- 21:37We didn't see the consistency certainly, and I thought he
- 21:40improved himself last year, but not at that level.
- 21:43The question marks are there. And on top of it, when we go
- 21:47back to Mark Gordowski, he had shoulder surgery and we've heard
- 21:49all the right things. That's all great.
- 21:52But you don't have to go back very far till we heard about
- 21:55injured quarterbacks. Yeah, that scar tissue is still
- 21:59pretty raw for Hawkeye fans in the quarterback position.
- 22:02And one hit on that bad shoulder, do we know he lands on
- 22:05it wrong? Come on down, Hank Brown.
- 22:10Well, I'm anxious to see him play, but not this year, right.
- 22:14I mean, I I think they've got something there.
- 22:16But yeah, I don't know if they have something their use this
- 22:19year. No, it's got to be Gronowski.
- 22:20Got to be Gronowski again. Doc coming up here in about an
- 22:23hour from now. Scott Document really good piece
- 22:25today that was published at the Athletic.
- 22:28He had a sit down a one-on-one with Kirk Ference.
- 22:31It published today at the Athletic.
- 22:32It is a pay site just to warn you in advance that you have to
- 22:37be a subscriber. But it's there's a sale every
- 22:40week signally, right? A buck for the buck a month for
- 22:43the first year. Well, and maybe we can help you
- 22:46out this way. We can put a little bonus box in
- 22:48your account. How about that?
- 22:49The keywords are back. You can head to KX and o.com.
- 22:53KX and o.com pop up box will appear in the pop up box.
- 22:57Type the keyword check, check at KX and o.com, check at KX and
- 23:01o.com. When we come back, I want to
- 23:05share some personal news if you feel allowed.
- 23:07Absolutely. When we come back, we'll do
- 23:09that. Miller and Condon underway on a
- 23:11Tuesday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 23:13Network. I just passed 1230.
- 23:20Welcome back Miller and Condon. Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 23:23We take you until 2:00 coming up in the second hour of the
- 23:27program. Frank Schwab covers the NFL for
- 23:29yahoosports.com, also branches out into the gambling aspect of
- 23:34the site, sports wagering. And then we'll talk to Scott
- 23:37Dockerman who published a piece today at The Athletic.
- 23:39He had a one-on-one sit down interview with Kirk Ference.
- 23:42It's a really good read and we'll talk to Doc about that and
- 23:45about the piece coming up here in no 50 minutes or thereabouts.
- 23:49So just real quick, and I don't want to linger on it, I just
- 23:54kind of want to explain what I'm about to do.
- 23:56You know, over the next year, 29 years ago today, sports radio in
- 24:02Des Moines made its debut and never, there was never full time
- 24:06sports radio before 29 years ago today.
- 24:09Next year obviously will be year #30 of that going of, of that
- 24:13format coming to Central Iowa on a full time basis.
- 24:17We did a local show in the mornings and then turned it
- 24:20over. We had Rome, we had the fabulous
- 24:22Sports Babe. I don't recall what else we had,
- 24:24but it was full time sports talk radio and it never been done
- 24:27before. And we were told it would never
- 24:29going to work because Des Moines not big enough and there's just
- 24:32no passion here for sports. And it was a guy by the name of
- 24:36Phil Hoover. I cut the article out.
- 24:37I'm sure I still have it. I know I do somewhere because
- 24:42screw you, we're going to make this work.
- 24:44And so anyways, next one year from today is going to be my
- 24:48last day. I'm going to retire in one year
- 24:51for from today full time. I don't know what that means as
- 24:55far as I, I, I'd always hope to be able to do a Sunday show, you
- 25:00know, and I, and I think I'm going to be allowed to do that.
- 25:02Previous management teams here had had, you know, signed off on
- 25:07it, wanted me to do it and I want to do it and I still do.
- 25:10But I just, you know, Tran, it was, it was a staff meeting that
- 25:14really put it over the top that Sean called, well, just stabbed
- 25:17me and our new program director and and I couldn't be a prouder
- 25:20of Shawn Roberts and be more in his corner than I am.
- 25:24And you'll call the meeting. I do.
- 25:26Right. And it was informative and we
- 25:27never done one before. And I thought this is really
- 25:29good idea just to get everybody on the same page.
- 25:32What's going on, the comings and goings, who's going on vacation.
- 25:36We're trying to do this, that and the other.
- 25:38And he's got a lot of stuff he's working on and and I think it's
- 25:41great that he is. So I looked around the room and
- 25:44and I looked down at Lucas and I'm 40 years older than Lucas,
- 25:48right? And I know I'm 20 years older
- 25:51than you and our program director.
- 25:53I'm 30 years older than Sean and the new Co host that's coming in
- 25:58July. I'm 30 years older than that
- 26:00person. So point being is I'm old,
- 26:03right? And it is, it is unfortunately,
- 26:07there comes a time for everybody that it's just your time and
- 26:12it's my time, as much as I hate to admit it.
- 26:15And it, I thought about it all weekend.
- 26:17I slept on it last night. I was going to call you last
- 26:19night and tell you and I thought, you know what, I'm
- 26:21going to sleep on it one more night just to make sure because
- 26:25I love what I do and I love what I've been able to do.
- 26:28And I'm so grateful to the state of Iowa, who for the most part
- 26:33welcome, welcomed in somebody who didn't grow up here, you
- 26:37know, didn't go to Iowa, Iowa State or Dowling or Valley or
- 26:39Ankeny or SE Poker, blah, blah, blah, who was a true foreigner
- 26:44to be to the area. And I think it's wonderful that
- 26:48that I've been accepted like that.
- 26:49And it's just, it's just time, man.
- 26:53And I've always been somebody who likes numbers, like likes
- 26:58getting on and getting off points.
- 26:59And what a great way to end, you know, started 30 years ago to
- 27:04the day and will end 30 years after that.
- 27:07And I did day one show, one minute 1 of this format.
- 27:13And there's only one other person can that can say that,
- 27:17but here I am. So that's what I'm going to do.
- 27:19And, and the reason here's the big reason I'm saying it today
- 27:22is I don't want to talk myself out of it, OK?
- 27:24Because I know that when June comes around, what's next month?
- 27:29July. And what does that mean?
- 27:31Football's. Getting uh huh and I'm going to
- 27:34talk myself into staying through football.
- 27:36Yes, I'll just leave after the college season.
- 27:38Well, the Super Bowl's in February and that's not fair to
- 27:41you because you and and your new Co host, whoever that will be A,
- 27:47you need the time to ramp up and B, that's when shows take off,
- 27:51right? I, I refer to it as autopilot.
- 27:55You know, we hit autopilot in July and basically until the
- 27:59last I where I was state or Drake team standing in March
- 28:03Madness or you and I, that's easy.
- 28:06And this is when this is when we have the most fun.
- 28:08But for me, it's particularly football.
- 28:10And I've said it over the, you know, many times what college
- 28:14football means to me and what separates, you know, what makes
- 28:18this such a wonderful country when it comes to sports, because
- 28:20really that's all I care about. It's the college, it's the, it's
- 28:25the pomp, it's the pageantry, it's the rooting for your
- 28:28school. And I just love it because I
- 28:30never experienced it. I mean, in, in college athletics
- 28:33in in Canada, it's family and friends, you know, unless
- 28:37they're talking and college hockey is never a thing.
- 28:40But I so I want to do everything one more time.
- 28:43I want to talk to Bama Bob on Mondays and Fridays because it's
- 28:47my favorite segment. And then once that's over, I
- 28:49want to get into the NFL and I want to do the big 10 and the
- 28:53Big 12 and the valley and keep an eye on them.
- 28:56And I want to do that until the end of whoever, end of March,
- 29:00hopefully somebody in April and then do the Masters with Matt
- 29:03Rudy and the Derby and all of those things that go into making
- 29:06our year what we do. I want to do it all one more
- 29:10time, you know, hopefully, you know, a perfect world.
- 29:13And I don't get that, you know, we'll be talking about a Stanley
- 29:16Cup that goes to my squad. But that, that, that'd be the,
- 29:19that would be the cherry eye shot, right?
- 29:21The absolute. But I want to do everything one
- 29:23more time. And I know if I don't go public
- 29:26and put it out there and then once I do, I won't take it back
- 29:29because I won't embarrass myself.
- 29:31This isn't an ego thing. What's this guy doing?
- 29:35Who's you think he is? I mean, he's given the year's
- 29:37notice. No, I'm just telling you how I
- 29:39feel and why and why I'm doing it.
- 29:41Because I know I would want to stay through football and that
- 29:43would be unfair to you. Well, and on top of it when you
- 29:46first called me this morning and you said that and was before you
- 29:48mentioned you're going to mention it on air.
- 29:51Well, that's this isn't going to last because football will be
- 29:53right around the corner and it's going to be here and because I
- 29:57don't want you to leave. But I'm not going to force you
- 29:59by any weeds or anything like that because I've been doing
- 30:02this also for a long time, not as long as you, but I am in now
- 30:05your number 21 of doing this format and I absolutely love it.
- 30:10I've worked with a lot of people, but there is nobody I
- 30:14enjoy doing sports talk radio more than with you.
- 30:17Yeah. Thank you.
- 30:18Ditto. Because we like to talk about
- 30:21sports, we like to talk about gambling, sports wagering.
- 30:25We see things very similar and we have the yin and Yang.
- 30:28And I think there's pieces of it that make our show fun to do
- 30:32every single day. And I will miss that.
- 30:35I will miss you. I will miss you goofiness.
- 30:38I will miss your stories. But more than anything, for you
- 30:43to be the trailblazer that you were and helping make this
- 30:46format work in this state. And like you said, people said
- 30:50it wouldn't work. It gave me a life, it gave me an
- 30:53opportunity. And I can't say thank you.
- 30:56And I know it goes for all the people throughout the years that
- 30:58have heard you. You are going to be sorely
- 31:00missed. Well, thank you.
- 31:03What I do want is, is hopefully I do get to work on Sundays.
- 31:10I think that'll be cool. I remember when I was a little
- 31:14boy and I was a boy, there was, there was the radio on the, on
- 31:18the fridge, you know, back in the 60s where you folks had the
- 31:21radios, but there was a, there was a show that would come on on
- 31:27on Sunday mornings. It was unlike anything else,
- 31:29right? And it was old music from the
- 31:3120s and the 30s. And it was music just for you.
- 31:34And I remember by asking my mom, you know, why does they do this?
- 31:37It's for the shut in son. She would say.
- 31:39And I remember this, you know, when you remember stuff when you
- 31:41were a little kid and I've had over the years people that come
- 31:44up to me and tell me that they've been listening to me
- 31:46since, you know, since the beginning.
- 31:48So I want to stick around for that.
- 31:50And I want to do Sundays and then I'm going to when you go on
- 31:54vacation. I want I don't want you to worry
- 31:58about I don't have anybody that can fill in for me.
- 32:00I'm going to be that guy. If your Co host is is good with
- 32:03that because one of the things I've never told you this before
- 32:06about you that sticks with me is when you told me about
- 32:10Christmas. And Christmas Eve.
- 32:12Oh, yes, yeah. And you grew up in a, you know,
- 32:15a family that you wanted to be, you wanted your kids to be in
- 32:18their own bed. Every every Christmas Eve.
- 32:20Every Christmas Eve and then that resonated with me.
- 32:22So when you when you go away, I'm going to, you know, take
- 32:26your place for those weeks or I know Sean in in in part of that
- 32:29meeting that came up a couple of weeks ago said he's going to
- 32:32audition, you know, for for fill in hosts.
- 32:36Maybe you'll let me audition, I think.
- 32:39You got a long reel if you need it.
- 32:40So I anyways, a year from today, I'm going to be, I'm going to
- 32:44put push back from full time sports talk duty.
- 32:47And so that's what I have to share with you and thank you
- 32:55for, for listening for all these years and letting me do this for
- 32:57as long as we did and got a year and want to have as much fun as
- 33:02we can and want to do everything one more time because I just
- 33:05love it and I'm going to miss the hell out of it.
- 33:07We're going to miss you. I'm going to miss the hell out
- 33:09of it. Baseball Benny goes a way back.
- 33:14I Benny. Haven't been as long as a long
- 33:17as round as you, but Kenny, I was probably 2 years into the
- 33:22incarnation of the first one when I first got an opportunity
- 33:25to produce at the old Choc. And I appreciate your friendship
- 33:30and your wonderful wife Cindy and you.
- 33:33But you've been a great friend and I hate to see you go, but I
- 33:36know you've got bigger and better things in your future.
- 33:39And I, I know you're going to miss it and it'll be great when
- 33:42you can TuneIn and Co host when I have friends gone that want to
- 33:47wish you nothing but the best. And I'm going to enjoy one last
- 33:50year just like I'm enjoying the last three years of Dan Patrick
- 33:53before he hangs it up. So going to enjoy my next three
- 33:57years of radio with Dan Patrick retiring in about 3 years.
- 34:01And you've given us a one year notice.
- 34:03But I love the fact that you're going out on your own term.
- 34:06Yeah, that's cool too. Wish you wish you and your
- 34:10family. That's wonderful.
- 34:11Nothing but the best. Thanks, Benny.
- 34:13You got a friend, you know you got a friend in your corner and
- 34:16me and great news. Winnipeg Zone coming home.
- 34:20Yeah, bring the cup with. He's going to bring the cup with
- 34:23him if he's got anything. Left, I hope.
- 34:25He's going to, he's going to get that goalie to learn how to
- 34:28become a playoff goalie, Yeah. Thanks, Benny.
- 34:31Appreciate it. Yeah, Jonathan Taves got signed
- 34:32back with The Jets. Do hope he's got something left.
- 34:35I saw that little headline. I said, oh, there's a good.
- 34:37One. Yeah, I know that is.
- 34:38Maybe we can do one of our final shows from up in Winnipeg.
- 34:40I can't cross the border. I'm a little worried.
- 34:44You'd be you'd be spending retirement Winnipeg.
- 34:46Yeah, No, no, please, no. The summers, summers are great,
- 34:49but that's fortunately that's about two months.
- 34:52Anyways, we'll take your time out, come back, finish up our
- 34:54number one. Thank you for allowing me that
- 34:5510 minutes For those of you in the state that are, you know,
- 34:58really new to me and to the state etcetera, to the sports
- 35:02talk radio coming from the capital city, thank you for
- 35:05that. Miller and Condon back on the
- 35:07Iowa Sports Radio Network. I'm Miller Condon, welcome back.
- 35:11Iowa Sports Radio Network. Trent Condon and Ken Miller with
- 35:14you until 2. Frank Schwab kicks off our
- 35:18number 2 Yahoo Sports talk or Yahoo Sports radio and then
- 35:21sports radio, Yahoo Sports and then Scott Dockerman will join
- 35:25us from the Athletic. Trump want to ask you what's
- 35:28going on with the Indiana fever. They've kind of fallen on some
- 35:31hard times. Caitlin Clark couldn't throw it
- 35:33in the ocean standing on the side end of a pier.
- 35:35She won up 17 in her last 17 three-point attempts.
- 35:39Something's going on there. Coach is running in and out of
- 35:43availability. Dewana Bonner, the free agent
- 35:46signing. She did all the social media
- 35:48leaving leading up to the season.
- 35:50Now she's on and to be determined to leave from the
- 35:53team. Something's Askew.
- 35:57Feels like there, yeah, something bubbling under the
- 35:59surface that isn't just basketball related.
- 36:02I know that I can't. Why can't I think of her?
- 36:07Name Stephanie White. Yeah, Stephanie White's wife, at
- 36:10least the Salters. Apparently her mother is dying,
- 36:12yes, so that could be something. To do at least the Salter wasn't
- 36:14there games one and two, at least the first game of the
- 36:17finals. And she was, of course.
- 36:18Back right? But yeah, so you have that going
- 36:21on. And in a way, you go back to
- 36:25that game, the physical game against Connecticut, and Sophie
- 36:29Cunningham comes find it. Sophie Cunningham suddenly
- 36:32became she's already star. Yeah.
- 36:34But you saw her social media following.
- 36:37It just, yeah, accelerates to another level, right?
- 36:39You couldn't buy her jersey. The next day they were sold out.
- 36:42Fanatics sold out. She went up to 1,000,000
- 36:45subscribers on TikTok. And are you on TikTok?
- 36:48No, I I downloaded it like 3-4 years ago.
- 36:53Twitter's addicting, as we've talked about.
- 36:57TikTok I got it bad. Do not download.
- 36:59It. No, I'm not.
- 37:00It is. 10 times worse than Twitter.
- 37:03I don't Facebook, I don't Instagram, I don't TikTok.
- 37:06I tweet. Well, I don't tweet.
- 37:07I. The TikTok, I thought I was
- 37:09sitting there for 10 minutes. I had killed 45 minutes.
- 37:10No way. The first time I'd done.
- 37:12I'm like, I can't, I'm like, I, I cannot have this in my life.
- 37:15It's that bad. And that's TikTok.
- 37:17But she's very good on it. But then we hear about the
- 37:20jealousy, and does that jealousy now go to another level?
- 37:26Caitlin's one thing. She's a once in a generation
- 37:28talent. She's coming to your team after
- 37:29you're not being a playoff team and being a terrible team the
- 37:31couple years previous. But now you add this new one,
- 37:34this new addition, jealousy in the locker room.
- 37:38Could it be something like that? Bonner is a celebrated as a
- 37:42player and a champion. 3rd in league scoring in history.
- 37:45Yet taking a different role late in her career.
- 37:49There's a lot that you can and this is all speculation, but you
- 37:53can understand it. We've seen that teams with
- 37:57different type of personalities, they don't mesh and they went
- 38:00out. It's not a talent problem, it's
- 38:02teams. It's not that they're not.
- 38:03Talented. They're significantly more
- 38:04talented. They were last year.
- 38:06But they don't look better. They don't for long, long
- 38:08stretches. I mean, Caitlin Clark has missed
- 38:1116 out of 17 threes. Come on.
- 38:14It's unthinkable, right? Yeah, a bad game.
- 38:16Sure, right, but not stacking them together right the way this
- 38:19I mean and you didn't you bet the the other day the.
- 38:22I did. That's what I thought.
- 38:23You took the points and they beat them out, right?
- 38:25They did and then Caitlin's turn, but she always turns the
- 38:28ball over. But it's just there's something
- 38:30wrong with this squad. Christine Brennan's book is
- 38:32coming out that's going to get stir up the putt even more.
- 38:35So I think 'cause she is pro Caitlin Clark.
- 38:37And you can't say that about the league.
- 38:39All the new commercials, the shoe that's going to drop.
- 38:42It's it's going to set records and there's going to be more
- 38:45pushback from the players that went before that didn't have
- 38:48those perks. Well, you weren't as good.
- 38:49Nobody cared, right? We do now.
- 38:52I go back to one thing we'll see tonight.
- 38:55Where are they in Seattle? Late night tonight, Yeah, in
- 38:58Seattle is. And it just, for whatever
- 39:01reason, triggered. Because remember when this
- 39:04year's Iowa women's basketball team was struggling, Lost five
- 39:07in a row? Oh, they went out there.
- 39:08They were out on the West Coast. They finished in Seattle, won
- 39:12that game decisively against a decent Washington team and a
- 39:15catapult him maybe this time together, because I don't think
- 39:18they came back to Indiana before.
- 39:19They didn't go from Oakland up to Seattle.
- 39:23That's probably what they did. If maybe this could be that.
- 39:26Got players only meeting, getting together, turn off the
- 39:31lights and we're just going to talk whatever it is, whatever
- 39:33kind of night. A lot of times, sometimes the
- 39:35coach helps cultivate that and Steph White hasn't been there.
- 39:38So we'll see about that front. But I do wonder if we see it
- 39:42click tonight. You heard it here first.
- 39:44That's what it was. No, you.
- 39:46It's funny you mentioned that. I didn't even think about that
- 39:48angle. We'll see.
- 39:49We've worked before with Caitlin's former team, but
- 39:52there's something off about this squad.
- 39:54Were they favored against Vegas? Do you remember?
- 39:562 was the number I can't remember.
- 39:58The getting, yeah. So it was, it was pretty tight.
- 40:00It was all right. Anyways, our 2 is coming up
- 40:03next. We're going to talk with Frank
- 40:05Schwab. He has started his countdown
- 40:08starts at 32, works his way to #1 now that Peter King has
- 40:11retired, it's one of the boxes you check as you inch your way
- 40:15to the NFL season. Miller and Condon Scott
- 40:17documents coming up as well. It is the Iowa Sports Radio
- 40:21Network.
