- 0:01Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Training Camp Cast. The Patriots Training
- 0:09Speaker 1: Camp Cast is your source for all the news from
- 0:11Speaker 1: Patriots training Camp.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Well, I do still watch the news.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Practice is over, but the writers of Patriots dot com
- 0:17Speaker 1: have you covered.
- 0:18Speaker 3: What did I miss yesterday?
- 0:19Speaker 1: Now here to review today's practice. The writers of Patriots
- 0:22Speaker 1: dot Com.
- 0:22Speaker 3: Mike or So and Paul Perlo here again following day
- 0:26Speaker 3: eight of Patriots training camp and when Bill Belichick starts
- 0:29Speaker 3: to talk about stacking the days, Mike, this particular camp,
- 0:32Speaker 3: Camp twenty three is stacking the days because it's every
- 0:36Speaker 3: day out there. The weather has been absolutely fantastic, Probably
- 0:40Speaker 3: not quite as warm as maybe the coach would like,
- 0:42Speaker 3: but beautiful conditions out here in Foxborough. In the physicality
- 0:46Speaker 3: to me, full pads, second day in a row. The
- 0:49Speaker 3: physicality is what stood out to me today in terms
- 0:51Speaker 3: of tackling to the ground. Mike, we haven't seen a
- 0:53Speaker 3: lot of that over the years. I think offensively, I
- 0:57Speaker 3: think they continue to sort of build a little bit
- 0:59Speaker 3: of momentum here a couple of wrinkles. What were your
- 1:02Speaker 3: first impressions today?
- 1:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree. I thought the first, you know, big
- 1:04Speaker 2: takeaway was just the offense being a little you know,
- 1:06Speaker 2: continuing to kind of develop, looking like they're you know,
- 1:09Speaker 2: finding their stride a little bit, some some nice a
- 1:12Speaker 2: bunch of eleven on eleven periods that they were working
- 1:14Speaker 2: on various stuff. One particular throw, you know, by Mac
- 1:17Speaker 2: up the sideline. I've been saying, I want to see
- 1:18Speaker 2: a deep throw to Trey Nixon. Really beautiful ball, nice catch.
- 1:22Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:23Speaker 2: It was one of those weird reps though, where only
- 1:25Speaker 2: half the line was rushing, and you know, so it
- 1:26Speaker 2: was a little bit weird. It wasn't perfect, but otherwise,
- 1:29Speaker 2: I'm with you. I thought it was great to see
- 1:31Speaker 2: another day of pads, great to see someone on ones again,
- 1:34Speaker 2: seeing that physicality pile up, and you know, with the
- 1:36Speaker 2: in stadium practice schedule for tomorrow, looks like they're going
- 1:39Speaker 2: to be off at least as far as media access
- 1:41Speaker 2: goes for the weekend. So it was a good day
- 1:42Speaker 2: probably to get some physicality in.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Yeah. And one of the wrinkles that I, you know,
- 1:46Speaker 3: sort of alluded to was Mac Jones. The first handful
- 1:51Speaker 3: of team reps. Eleven on eleven reps was dealing with
- 1:54Speaker 3: the quote unquote starting offensive line, but the two number
- 1:58Speaker 3: two receivers, So you know Mike mentioned the big throat
- 2:01Speaker 3: to Trey Nixon. He was he had Nixon and Douglas
- 2:03Speaker 3: and Booty and those guys to work with, and Bailey
- 2:07Speaker 3: Zappi was behind the second offensive line but had Juju
- 2:11Speaker 3: and Parker and Born. So I thought that was a
- 2:14Speaker 3: little bit of a wrinkle that maybe Bill Belichick and
- 2:16Speaker 3: Bill O'Brien dialed up today, and then it sort of
- 2:18Speaker 3: went back to the normal groupings at the end when
- 2:21Speaker 3: they started doing some of their down in distance. They
- 2:23Speaker 3: worked a lot of second and third down today and
- 2:26Speaker 3: then down in the red zone. So I agree, I
- 2:28Speaker 3: thought there was a little bit more rhythm. It seems
- 2:31Speaker 3: like the rhythm is coming a little bit more every
- 2:33Speaker 3: day in terms of timing, and one guy in particular,
- 2:37Speaker 3: it looks like he's developing a little bit of a
- 2:38Speaker 3: rapport with his Juju. Smith Schuster, who had another touchdown
- 2:42Speaker 3: say in a little tunnel screen well designed, really caught
- 2:45Speaker 3: the defense by surprise in the red zone. So I
- 2:48Speaker 3: think those are some building blocks to work with for
- 2:52Speaker 3: both bills.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I would, I would just run down some of
- 2:54Speaker 2: the depth issues because it's certainly notable that Matthew Judon,
- 2:57Speaker 2: Trent Brown haven't really been participating in physical portions of
- 3:01Speaker 2: practice whatever that has to be done doing with But
- 3:04Speaker 2: I would say vermondra Stevenson back in the mix today
- 3:06Speaker 2: a little bit getting some so they upped him a
- 3:09Speaker 2: little bit. But you know, it's just a lot of
- 3:11Speaker 2: guys kind of limited chasing Hines another one who's you know,
- 3:14Speaker 2: hasn't really been participating. So just some offensive line depth
- 3:17Speaker 2: and they're continuing to have to shuffle guys in and out.
- 3:20Speaker 2: I'm not sure where, you know, are they looking for
- 3:23Speaker 2: answers or are they just trying to put guys in
- 3:25Speaker 2: of who they have healthy right now?
- 3:27Speaker 3: Yeah, so little that's a good point that you make.
- 3:29Speaker 3: I'll just the bookkeeping that we'd like to do every podcast.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Ti Montgomery, Terres Hall, and Cole Strange again, you know,
- 3:36Speaker 3: you know, missing practice. Montgomery and Strange came back on
- 3:40Speaker 3: the field late, probably last twenty twenty five minutes, helmets
- 3:46Speaker 3: in hand shirts on no pads, both with sleeves on
- 3:49Speaker 3: their left leg. So it looks like they're probably both
- 3:52Speaker 3: dealing with some sort of left knee injury would be
- 3:54Speaker 3: my guess.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Still a good sign they're out.
- 3:57Speaker 3: There, so they they probably getting closer and to your
- 4:00Speaker 3: point about the offensive line, it again was Cody Russy
- 4:04Speaker 3: and Antonio Maffi, not Bill Murray. Murray was going with
- 4:08Speaker 3: the later groups, and you mentioned Hines sort of mixing
- 4:10Speaker 3: in with those groups too, So you know, again, it's
- 4:15Speaker 3: kind of curious to me the whole Trent Brown, Matthew
- 4:19Speaker 3: Judhon plan. For the lack of a better word, Julian
- 4:23Speaker 3: Edelman on hand today looked like he talked to the
- 4:25Speaker 3: team a little bit at the end of practice. One
- 4:30Speaker 3: thing we should note, not exactly sure what happened here.
- 4:33Speaker 3: I don't know if you saw something differently from up top.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Jack Jones looked like he dove broke up or at
- 4:39Speaker 3: least bothered Kendrick Bourn enough on an out route and
- 4:43Speaker 3: got up and celebrated it. And then all of a
- 4:45Speaker 3: sudden he's walking with Jabrill Peppers back to the locker room.
- 4:50Speaker 3: That was at about let's say about ten twenty, and
- 4:53Speaker 3: he went to the locker room about ten forty five.
- 4:56Speaker 3: He comes back, spent the time on a knee by himself.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Matt grow went over and talked to him for a
- 5:02Speaker 3: little bit. Jalen Mills had some conversations, but he really
- 5:06Speaker 3: didn't do anything the rest of the practice. I'm not
- 5:08Speaker 3: exactly sure what was going on. Did you see anything different? No,
- 5:11Speaker 3: that was pretty much how I saw it.
- 5:12Speaker 2: I mean, it's just, you know, it looked to me
- 5:14Speaker 2: like Pepper's kind of arm around him, like giving him
- 5:16Speaker 2: some veteran advice. It seems like Pepper's kind of emerging
- 5:18Speaker 2: is a little bit more of a leader this year.
- 5:20Speaker 3: But yeah, tough to say.
- 5:21Speaker 2: And obviously there's so many issues right now, you know,
- 5:23Speaker 2: overhanging Jack Jones this season that you just you wonder
- 5:26Speaker 2: he needs to kind of, you know, be stacking days
- 5:29Speaker 2: with positivity, and I don't think today probably was one.
- 5:32Speaker 2: So I guess we'll see what the fallout is over
- 5:33Speaker 2: the next couper.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Yeah, and just you know, one of those things that
- 5:36Speaker 3: we haven't seen a lot of. I alluded to the
- 5:37Speaker 3: tackling to the ground. Christian Gonzalez came up and made
- 5:41Speaker 3: a really nice play. It probably got the big biggest
- 5:44Speaker 3: reaction of the day from any any of the plays.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Kind of recognized a little little swing pass in the flat,
- 5:50Speaker 3: came up, darted, chopped the legs right out for a
- 5:54Speaker 3: for a lost tackle for loss, and that seemed to
- 5:57Speaker 3: get a lot of energy on the defensive side. But
- 5:59Speaker 3: even the the little you know, the pursuit drills, the
- 6:01Speaker 3: ball kit. You know, there's one ball carrier, one tackle.
- 6:04Speaker 3: They usually tap on the hip. They were tackling to
- 6:07Speaker 3: the ground today and by the way, not surprisingly unless
- 6:10Speaker 3: they knocked him out of bounds. To Mario Douglas, no
- 6:12Speaker 3: one was able to tackle him. But they did knock
- 6:15Speaker 3: him out of bounds a couple of times. So some
- 6:18Speaker 3: different wrinkles to the drills that we've seen over the years.
- 6:20Speaker 3: I thought that was interesting.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Yeah, Douglas has just been all over the place. I mean,
- 6:23Speaker 2: it's just you know, he's always in motion, he's fast,
- 6:26Speaker 2: he's he's going to be, I think, an asset to
- 6:27Speaker 2: this team. I mean, I don't want to jump the
- 6:29Speaker 2: gun and say, you know, not only is going to
- 6:30Speaker 2: make the team, but he's going to be part of
- 6:31Speaker 2: the offense this year. But based on you know, Taekwon
- 6:33Speaker 2: Thornton being down in the lower field, opportunities are presenting
- 6:36Speaker 2: themselves and I feel like Davis and over the last
- 6:38Speaker 2: two days Booty a little bit have taken made.
- 6:41Speaker 3: A nice catch. I don't know if he was in bounds,
- 6:43Speaker 3: but that was a nice play, nice catch on the
- 6:45Speaker 3: back corner of the end zone, so he's building a
- 6:48Speaker 3: little momentum. He admitted that he got off to a
- 6:50Speaker 3: little bit of a slow start and feels a little
- 6:52Speaker 3: bit more comfortable. So we'll wrap up Day eight with
- 6:56Speaker 3: those comments. Just le f yi for our loyal followers,
- 7:01Speaker 3: because I know there are millions of you. Tomorrow, on Friday,
- 7:05Speaker 3: the Patriots are scheduled to have their in stadium practice
- 7:08Speaker 3: open to Foxborough residents and season ticket members only inside
- 7:13Speaker 3: Jillette Stadium. That's tomorrow night, six thirty ish scheduled to
- 7:18Speaker 3: get underway. So if you're looking for our podcast tomorrow
- 7:21Speaker 3: and you're not sure where it is, it won't be
- 7:23Speaker 3: coming until around, you know, probably nine o'clock or so.
- 7:27Speaker 3: So you want to make sure, I know, everybody be
- 7:29Speaker 3: waited with baited breath to hear what say correct, So
- 7:34Speaker 3: until then, that's going to put a wrap on Day eight.
