- 0:00Gold is probably the world's real base reserve currency. Because
- 0:03if you look at what the actual global reserve currency is, historically, over
- 0:07the last 3,000 years, it's probably been gold. The other way to assess the
- 0:10strength or weakness of the US dollar is the dollar index. If it drops below
- 0:15100, it's showing weakness. And if it rises above 100, it's showing
- 0:18strength. If you look at whether a currency is becoming more valuable or
- 0:22less, the first way to assess it is to assess it against other currencies. It's
- 0:25called foreign exchange, okay, FX. The second thing to understand is the
- 0:29purchasing power of the US dollar. That's the difference. I'm Lloyd James
- 0:32Ross, seven-figure investor and entrepreneur, and I've helped thousands of
- 0:35business owners and professionals turn financial stress into
- 0:39success. If you're stuck in old money habits, overwhelmed by investing,
- 0:42or unsure where to start, this is for you. I'll give you the mindset
- 0:46and strategies to take control, grow your wealth, and achieve
- 0:50financial freedom. It's time to make your money work for you.
- 0:53Gold's at record highs, the Fed's keeping rates steady at
- 0:574.5%, and the dollar index has slipped under 100. What
- 1:01does this all mean? I'll explain in a second. But what I want to ask is, does
- 1:04this mean that the US dollar is finally collapsing?
- 1:09First, let's understand what collapse actually means. In plain English, a collapse isn't
- 1:12just a dip, it would mean countries and companies stop trusting the
- 1:16U.S. dollar and U.S. trade, right? There'd be like a global run
- 1:19on the dollar, but that's not what's happening right now. So what we're seeing is
- 1:23weakness in the U.S. dollar compared to 2022 highs, but
- 1:26where does it stand? How do we assess the weakness or the strength
- 1:30of the U.S. dollar? So let's understand some things. Firstly, the
- 1:34U.S. dollar is a world reserve currency, okay? So
- 1:38what that means is most of the countries around the world have,
- 1:42let's say their FX reserves or their own emergency funds.
- 1:47They've got FX reserves of US dollars of about 57%. And
- 1:51to that matter too, most of the world's trade is
- 1:54done in US dollars, between 48% if you don't include Europe, and
- 1:58then about, I would say 60% if you include Europe. So
- 2:02by and large, It's the reserve currency still very
- 2:06strongly. It doesn't look like it's going to get toppled at
- 2:09all. So that's the first important thing to understand. So
- 2:12if it was collapsing, you would
- 2:16start to see people moving and shifting their US dollars
- 2:19into, say, euros, because that's the second strongest
- 2:24currency in the world in terms of a reserve currency. So
- 2:28most countries keep their money in US dollars. And
- 2:32it does have payment dominance. Alright, so again, all the
- 2:35transactions you're seeing or into effectively international transactions through
- 2:39SWIFT, which is the payments, global payments system, the
- 2:43plumbing for payments around the world. It is in U.S. dollars, all
- 2:47right? So half the world's money transfers are still happening in
- 2:50U.S. dollars and are settled in U.S. dollars. And if we saw the U.S.
- 2:54dollar actually collapsing, we'd see that starting
- 2:57to unravel, all right? And that's not actually happening in massing countries,
- 3:00so it's not happening, okay? Now, the other way to assess the strength or weakness
- 3:04of the U.S. dollar is the dollar index, the DXY. You'll see this
- 3:07on the financial news, like the DXY did this. So if it
- 3:10drops below 100, it's showing weakness. And
- 3:14if it rises above 100, it's showing strength. So what is
- 3:17the dollar index? It's basically like a scorecard that
- 3:21compares the US dollar to other big currencies in the world. It's
- 3:25the euro, the yen, which is the Japanese money, the pound, which is
- 3:28UK. and then Switzerland and there's a couple of others. So
- 3:32they assess the US dollar against the strength of those core five
- 3:35or six currencies. And if it's again, at a
- 3:39hundred, it's neutral. If it's below a hundred, it shows that
- 3:42the US dollar is weakening. And if it's above a hundred, it shows that there's relative
- 3:46strength against other currencies. So there's two things happening
- 3:49here, just to clarify. When I say the US dollar collapsing, what
- 3:53we have to understand is, is it weakening or strengthening against other
- 3:56currencies? Because if you look at whether a currency
- 4:01is becoming more valuable or less, the
- 4:04first way to assess it is to assess it against other currencies. It's called foreign
- 4:07exchange, FX. The second thing to understand is
- 4:11the purchasing power of the U.S. dollar. That's different. So
- 4:16whether the U.S. dollar can purchase things in other countries relative to
- 4:20their currency is the effects and whether the U.S.
- 4:23dollar can continue to purchase things inside the United States or things
- 4:26denominated in U.S. dollars is the actual value.
- 4:31of the US dollar. And as we're seeing, there might be a bit of
- 4:34relative weakness in the US dollar against other currencies, which is what we're seeing because
- 4:38the DXY is actually at about 90. So we're seeing that against other
- 4:41currencies, the US dollar is weakening a little bit, which is fairly normal, definitely not
- 4:44collapsing against other currencies. However, what
- 4:48people are frightened of is if the
- 4:52federal funds rate drops and
- 4:55inflation continues to tick up beyond 3%, which is what it's
- 4:58at at the moment, They're afraid that
- 5:02the US dollar's ability to buy more things in their home country will
- 5:05go down, meaning inflation gets out of control and
- 5:09the currency devalues, which by the way, it's been devalued for
- 5:12the last hundred and however many years. It gets devalued through
- 5:16inflation, which usually is caused by government spending, but
- 5:19what's happening at the minute is by and
- 5:23large, the US dollar is losing some purchasing power, right?
- 5:26And that's why, again, things like crypto and certainly real estate transactions
- 5:30and certain companies and businesses you buy, and gold, which is
- 5:33why gold's gone parabolic this year, over 40% returns year
- 5:37to date, is because people are afraid that the value of
- 5:41their US dollar is going to fall, right? So not against other currencies, but
- 5:44generally speaking, in terms of what it can purchase. So
- 5:49if we see CPR inflation tick up any further, we are
- 5:52going to see the value of the US dollar start
- 5:55to collapse even faster in terms of what it can buy, which
- 5:59is why at the moment in the United States, People
- 6:03are giving Jerome Powell right? Who's the
- 6:07head of the Federal Reserve? They're giving him a bit of a pat on the back because
- 6:10they're like listen, man You're what stands between us torching
- 6:13the US dollar and not the reason why is because he's
- 6:17currently keeping rates steady at four and a half percent Which he
- 6:20should to curb inflation which is working but
- 6:24what people are worried about is they're gonna go into a massive recession which may happen
- 6:27and But it's certainly better than inflation. And so
- 6:30on one side, you've got Donald Trump, the president, aggressively,
- 6:36very aggressively with Scott Bennett, his right-hand
- 6:40man, Jaw-boning or telling Jerome Powell
- 6:43to drop rates right because inflation is back in the steady
- 6:47band But is it really in a steady band or
- 6:50they're just wanting to stoke the economy and crank it up again and
- 6:54I actually feel like Jerome Powell's being the most responsible
- 6:58Federal Reserve chairman because He's staying
- 7:02staunch. He's not letting Donald Trump Influence
- 7:05his decision as he should which is why there's a separation of powers between
- 7:09the executive and the Federal Reserve So I think it's
- 7:12a wonderful thing that he's keeping it four and a half percent Because the last thing
- 7:15you want is to drop it down to three again, and if Donald Trump had his
- 7:18way I don't mind I don't mind Donald but if he had his way he drop
- 7:22it to one or zero and that would absolutely Torch
- 7:26the US dollar and if that actually happened you'd see gold would
- 7:29probably go up another 50% It would just go ballistic because if you look
- 7:32at what the actual global reserve currency is Historically, over
- 7:36the last 3,000 years, it's probably been gold. And that's
- 7:39why China is buying so much gold. Because if you look
- 7:43at the fiat currencies, by and large, they
- 7:46can be printed into infinite. So they can actually be printed
- 7:50away into nothingness, because there's no supply
- 7:55constraint. There's basically just
- 7:59unlimited supply. Whereas gold, there's a supply constraint
- 8:02in terms of how much can be produced by the earth over time. and how much can
- 8:05be mined. So that's a supply constraint. You don't get that with fiat, which
- 8:09is why gold is probably the world's real
- 8:12base reserve currency. The trade currency, obviously,
- 8:16is the US dollar. So the commerce currency is the US dollar, but
- 8:20the real global reserve currency is probably gold. And people
- 8:23are now trying to replace that with Bitcoin as
- 8:27this online version of or coded version of
- 8:31wealth, right? So that's why people are
- 8:34worried. Just quickly, if you're ready to take control of your finances but feel
- 8:37stuck on where to start, I have a solution. My book, Money
- 8:41Bias Happiness, simplifies investing and wealth building with
- 8:44practical steps to help you achieve financial peace. Get
- 8:48your copy via the link in the show notes and let's get your money working for
- 8:51you. Now back to the episode. Are there any other risks that kind of
- 8:55create this problem and exacerbate this
- 8:59US dollar value journey, right?
- 9:02Or misadventure that it seems to be on? So if you look at those three big
- 9:06things happening as well, the reason why Donald Trump is
- 9:09passing bills and trying to drop rates is
- 9:12because he also wants to have GDP grow. He wants to see
- 9:16the country grow at a certain pace so that it
- 9:19can earn enough money, here's why, to pay off
- 9:22its $37 trillion in debt. There's
- 9:25two ways to pay off debt. And if you think of the United States or any country
- 9:29as a big household, it's the same thing. In a household, there's two ways to pay off
- 9:32debt. Either you go to austerity measures, meaning you start to cut costs and
- 9:36you take it on the chin like a boss. And you know what? We've been very, very
- 9:39naughty. We haven't got control of our debt. We've got too much credit
- 9:42card debt. Honey, we need to tighten our belt. No
- 9:46more Netflix, no more this, no more this. So you start to cut costs.
- 9:50That's what the government could do. And that's why Elon Musk decided to
- 9:53bail because when they put that big bill through that was like 5 trillion
- 9:58or something of spending, he went, oh my God, that is like the most
- 10:02irresponsible spending ever. On the other side,
- 10:05they thought, well, we've got to earn our way out of this. So they're
- 10:08not doing the austerity thing like a household would if they were in credit card
- 10:12debt. They're actually going to go earn more money. And you can do both, right? You
- 10:15could actually do both at the same time, but it's very difficult because to
- 10:18make money, you've got to spend money. So on the opposite side, the
- 10:22Trump administration is saying, hey, we're going to earn our way out
- 10:26of this problem. So the reason he wants to drop rates is to crank up
- 10:29GDP, to earn more money. And of course, pay
- 10:32off the 37 trillion in debt. That's one part of it. The
- 10:36other part of it is this, the tariffs that have been put in place. with
- 10:40other countries, the tariff deals that have happened between the United States, they're starting
- 10:44to raise tariff income in the US. Now,
- 10:48in the short term, that will probably stoke inflation. So Jerome Powell's
- 10:51like, listen, man, if you have tariffs being put in place,
- 10:55and we're getting all this new income, and it's creating price rises in
- 10:58products that are tariffed, we're going to see an uptick inflation. So
- 11:01while the tariffs are being swallowed by the economy, I'm not going
- 11:05to flip and drop rates, man. Just hold up your horses. Let's let the tariffs
- 11:08be digested by the economy. Let's see the impact on inflation there,
- 11:12the impact on people's pockets, and then let's assess the
- 11:15federal funds rate. But Trump's like, you know, no, let's get
- 11:18tariffs. Let's get the drop. Let's play. But he's like, let's make money,
- 11:22right? And so that you're having this kind of war going on between him and Pal
- 11:26and it's it's it's pretty gnarly But I commend Pal for staying staunch on
- 11:30this because we don't want to see the US dollar torched Okay, all
- 11:33the Bitcoin is in the comments be like, yeah, we do. We want to see
- 11:36it torched And everyone who owns gold they want to see it
- 11:40torched too. But by and large we don't really want to see the trade
- 11:43currency torched Okay, we don't want to see that again. You'll
- 11:47leave a comment below if you if you don't feel the same way So the question is,
- 11:50is the US dollar collapsing? It seems to be weakening against
- 11:54other currencies. And as long as Jerome Powell is
- 11:58holding rates at four and a half percent, I
- 12:01don't think we're going to see US dollar collapse. Much to the dismay and
- 12:05discomfort of the gold holders and the Bitcoin
- 12:09holders, right? Crypto holders. However, and I know there's a
- 12:12difference between Bitcoin and crypto. I get it. I know, I just put it in the comment. But
- 12:17hopefully, Cooler heads prevail. Hopefully
- 12:22Trump doesn't get his way to drop rates down to 1% or
- 12:262% again and stoke inflation. Hopefully the tariffs
- 12:30don't cause too much inflation. But it really does rest
- 12:34on Jerome Powell saying, hey, let's just put out, let's just draw a line in the sand here.
- 12:38And I think what's promising is you're seeing housing start to fall
- 12:41and collapse in the United States. And this is a byproduct of what happens
- 12:45when you hold rates steady, which is why I feel in Australia we need to do it.
- 12:504.5% is where they should be, because we'd start to see the falling
- 12:53of real estate prices. It's not a bad thing. It
- 12:58resets the real estate market, resets the economy, and
- 13:01they're able to do it in the States. Although in the
- 13:05United States, you have non-recourse loans and all these wonderful things you can
- 13:08rely on. In Australia, we have full recourse, meaning that will come after your last dollar
- 13:11to get that loan repaid. So I can understand the apprehension. So
- 13:16I don't feel like what we're seeing in the signal wise and with Jerome
- 13:19Powell and the rates and the housing market, that the dollar is
- 13:23collapsing. We're seeing some weakening, which is fairly normal as
- 13:26well because, you know, we're paying the
- 13:29US dollar is... succumbing to
- 13:32some inflation because of tariffs. So we're going to see it weaken. We're
- 13:36probably not going to see it strengthen, particularly if rates start to fall again in
- 13:39the United States in the future. And we'll probably see a bit of an equalization
- 13:44of other currencies against the states, where we're not going to
- 13:47see it dislodge as a reserve currency, primarily too, because it's backed
- 13:50by the world's most powerful military. People say,
- 13:53oh, the currency is not backed by anything. It's kind of backed by all the natural resources
- 13:57and all the land and all the military might the United
- 14:00States has. and its contract. So it is backed
- 14:04by something. And we're not going to see that dislodged. So
- 14:07straight up, we're not going to see it lose its reserve status. It
- 14:11doesn't look like that's happening at all on mass. If it did,
- 14:15the next currency in line to take over would be the Euro and
- 14:19maybe down the line, the digital RMB with China. I
- 14:22can't see any crypto or Bitcoin taking reserve status at all. It's
- 14:25just, it just wouldn't, it's so untested. It would be a huge risk
- 14:28for the world to do that. And I think
- 14:31we're going to see cooler heads prevail in the States and
- 14:35a steadying out of the value of the US dollar. And
- 14:39that's what I think is the outcome. So is the US dollar collapsing? I
- 14:42don't think so. It's just weakening. But I'd love to know your comments, good,
- 14:46bad, or indifferent, pop them below. What are your thoughts? Do
- 14:49you think the US dollar is collapsing? What do you think is going to happen with the
- 14:52federal fund rate over the next few months? Do you think that
- 14:56the US is going to pull out of this $37 trillion debt hole? If
- 14:59it is, how will it do it? And what happens if it doesn't? Everybody
- 15:03knows they're probably gonna print their way out of it, which will stoke inflation
- 15:06Which is why we need to keep the rates higher. And so keep an eye
- 15:10out for the US dollar, but of course hedge against currency
- 15:13inflation It would be crazy to keep your
- 15:16money under your mattress in US dollars for obvious reasons. That's
- 15:20why investing in assets, real estate, good
- 15:24quality businesses with pricing power, which includes some stocks, and
- 15:27of course, if you needed to, you could probably consider maybe
- 15:31gold. But again, not financial advice. It's just
- 15:35a lesson or a principle to say, hey, I'm not going to hold currencies. I'm
- 15:38gonna hold assets that are a hedge against inflation. All
- 15:42right, so I hope that makes sense and give you something to think about. Can't wait to talk
- 15:45to you in the comments and I'll see you in the next episode. Thanks for listening to Money Grows on Trees.
