- 0:02John chapter 13. Let us pray.
- 0:08Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for another day to come and
- 0:11worship you in spirit and truth. Lord, we are expecting that
- 0:15You're going to touch us and heal us today.
- 0:18Father, I pray in the name of Jesus that the Holy Spirit will
- 0:22increase in US and give us discernment.
- 0:24I decrease as you increase. Come and teach us your eternal
- 0:28paths and ways. Lord, we just want to know
- 0:31Christ and know Christ crucified.
- 0:33Thank you, Father, for another opportunity to come and to dine
- 0:38and Sup with you and to be loved on by you, you and to love you.
- 0:41Father, I pray that you will be well pleased with the teaching
- 0:45and the reading of your Scripture today as we open up
- 0:49your word. Father, bless us and bless this
- 0:52time in Jesus Christ, Holy and precious name, I pray, Amen.
- 0:59Let's start in verse one Now before the feast of the
- 1:05Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour was come, that He
- 1:10should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved
- 1:15his own which were in the world, He loved them unto the end.
- 1:19So we can see here that Jesus knew that his time was short and
- 1:24He knew that He had fulfilled the Father's will for the time
- 1:31that He had on this earth, and that He was obedient to the
- 1:34Father because of the love that he had to.
- 1:38And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the
- 1:42heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him.
- 1:45So we can see here that the devil was coming into Judas
- 1:50because Judas had opened himself up to greed and to stealing, and
- 1:58he did not actually believe that Jesus Christ was the Messiah.
- 2:03He wanted to follow Jesus to be able to get something out of it
- 2:10in the business transactions. And so we can see here that
- 2:14Judas had opened himself up because he refused to come to
- 2:19the Lord Jesus honestly. Three Jesus knowing that the
- 2:24Father had given all things into his hands and that he was come
- 2:28from God and went to God, Jesus knew he was here for his
- 2:31Father's business. For he rose from supper and laid
- 2:36aside his garments and took a towel and girded himself.
- 2:40So of course, the natural application is that he's showing
- 2:44them that he is the servant leader and he is the shepherd
- 2:50king. He is modeling for them the
- 2:53behavior that we need to exude on this land.
- 2:57And we do not need to think of ourselves as more highly than we
- 3:01ought. We should not consider ourselves
- 3:04wise. We need to be humbled and we
- 3:07need to make sure we have humility.
- 3:09And he's showing us that. But he's also modeling how he
- 3:13came from heaven, and how he rose from the throne that he had
- 3:19from eternal. And he came, and he laid aside
- 3:22all of his deity, and he put on flesh, friends.
- 3:28He girded himself with flesh and came to this earth. 5 After that
- 3:34he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples feet
- 3:39and to wipe them with the towel. Where, where, wherewith he was
- 3:43girded. So here we can see that of
- 3:46course the natural application is that it was the lowest
- 3:51position for a servant to touch somebody else's feet.
- 3:58To mess with the feet would have been relegated to the lowest
- 4:02position. And here the King of Kings is
- 4:05washing his disciples feet. And so you must understand that
- 4:09there is a continual washing that is available to us even
- 4:13though our whole body has been washed in the blood of Jesus
- 4:16Christ. We must come to Him and have the
- 4:20renewal of our mind by the washing of the Word, friends.
- 4:23And that is what he is modeling for us in the spiritual realm.
- 4:30Six And then come he to Simon Peter.
- 4:33And Peter said unto him, Lord, do you wash my feet?
- 4:37So here Peter is full of pride and he's trying to ask if Jesus
- 4:42is going to wash his feet as if he's above that.
- 4:46He thought of himself as being too lofty. 7 Jesus answered and
- 4:52said unto him, What I do you know not now, but you will know
- 4:57afterwards. So Jesus is saying, when the
- 5:01Holy Spirit comes in you, whenever you are in dwelled with
- 5:05the Holy Spirit after Pentecost, the baptism of fire, you will
- 5:09look upon these things and have discernment and understand all
- 5:13of it. 8 Peter said unto him, You shall never wash my feet.
- 5:19And Jesus answered, if I wash you not, then you have no part
- 5:24with me. So look at how Jesus is showing
- 5:28Peter that he must be washed, that he must wash him not only
- 5:34in the blood of Jesus, but he must have this continual washing
- 5:38of the word over his mind. And he's showing him that that
- 5:41if we will abide in him, he will abide in US, friends.
- 5:45And that is this washing of the word that is happening.
- 5:50And he's telling him that he has no part with him if he will not
- 5:53be continuously washed. So 9 Simon Peter said unto him,
- 5:59Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.
- 6:02So here Peter is saying, OK, if this washing of the feet is so
- 6:07special, then go ahead and just wash my whole body too.
- 6:11What does Jesus say? Jesus said unto him, He that is
- 6:15washed needs not save to wash his feet, but it's clean every
- 6:22way, and you are clean but not all.
- 6:24He's obviously talking about Judas, but he's saying that
- 6:28after we've been washed in the blood of Jesus Christ, we don't
- 6:32need to continuously keep going back to it.
- 6:35We can abide in that, but we do need to make sure that we're not
- 6:39stained by the things in this world when we're going out, When
- 6:43we go out to make disciples, we need to make sure that we're
- 6:48free from sexual immorality and from the meat that is sacrificed
- 6:53unto idols. We need to make sure that we are
- 6:56practicing purity, friends, and Jesus is offering us this
- 7:00continual washing of our feet as we go. 11 For he knew who should
- 7:06betray him. Therefore he said, You are not
- 7:09all clean. 12 So after he had washed their feet and had taken
- 7:13his garments and was set down again, he said unto them, Know
- 7:17you what I have done to you? So look at how after Jesus goes
- 7:22to the cross and he accomplishes the work of the Father, he is
- 7:26ascended to the right hand, and he sits down and makes
- 7:31intercession for you and for me. And then he asks the disciples,
- 7:36do you know what I've done to you?
- 7:3713 You call me Master and Lord, and you say, well, for so I am.
- 7:43So there's another I am statement.
- 7:45He is Master and he is Lord, and we do well to call him that. 14
- 7:51If I then your Lord and Master have washed your feet, you also
- 7:56ought to wash one another's feet.
- 7:58We need to be edifying our brothers and sisters, building
- 8:01them up friends, not breaking them down.
- 8:04We need to get away from gossip and slander and discord and
- 8:08disunion Friends. We need to be coming alongside
- 8:12each other and we need to be fanning the flame.
- 8:16We need to be encouraging each other.
- 8:18There is no competition friends. We are Co air, we are Co
- 8:25laborers and we will inherit our inheritance, friends.
- 8:31And so we need to know that we need to put away all malice.
- 8:35We need to put away all of this negativity.
- 8:39We need to be washing each other's feet.
- 8:42And yes, there is a ceremony here and it is beautiful.
- 8:46And when we do it, we are modeling and remembering what
- 8:49the Lord did for us. But there's so much more to it
- 8:52than just a ceremony. 15 For I have given you an example that
- 9:02you should do as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say unto
- 9:06you, the servant is not greater than his Lord, neither he that
- 9:11is sent greater than he that sent him.
- 9:15So he's showing us that we need to model and mirror the things
- 9:22that the Lord did and what he said, and we need to obey them
- 9:26and take them at face value. 17 If you know these things, happy
- 9:32are you if you do them. So we can see here that the Lord
- 9:36desires for us to do them with a cheerful heart.
- 9:41We don't need to be begrudging as we spill out our lives, as we
- 9:47spill out our resources. We are happy if we will obey
- 9:52Him. 18 I speak not of you all. I know whom I have chosen, but
- 9:58that the Scripture may be fulfilled.
- 10:01He that eats bread with me has lifted up His heel against me.
- 10:06Scripture after scripture after scripture, prophecy after
- 10:10prophecy after prophecy being fulfilled in this last week of
- 10:15Jesus Christ. And here we are, and Jesus knows
- 10:20that Judas is filled with the devil and that he's going to
- 10:24betray him. And it doesn't excuse Judas.
- 10:27Judas had free will and he could have chosen not to.
- 10:32But God already knew what he was going to do, and he could write
- 10:36about it as if it was already done.
- 10:38What a thought. 19 Now I tell you before it comes that when it
- 10:44comes to pass, you may believe that I am.
- 10:48So here He's showing us that He has full authority and all of
- 10:53Scripture lines up with all of the events of this night and
- 10:58nothing is happening that should not happen.
- 11:01And it's no different for us today.
- 11:04Everything is moving in accordance to Scripture, and we
- 11:09would do well to get in line with it and to obey it. 20
- 11:17Truly, truly, I say unto you, He that receives whomsoever I sin
- 11:22receives me, and he that receives me receives him that
- 11:26sent me. So he's showing that him and the
- 11:28Father are. 121 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in
- 11:33spirit and testified, and said, Truly, truly I say unto you,
- 11:37that one of you shall betray me. You can see that Jesus was all
- 11:41man. You can see that he was troubled
- 11:44just like you and I, but he knew where to go, and we need to do
- 11:48the same. 22 Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting
- 11:54of whom he spoke. So Judas was so sly and cunning,
- 12:01he was a ravenous wolf in sheep's clothing, that he caused
- 12:06no one to look at him. He even had the place of honor
- 12:13at this supper, and it was to look as if he was free from all
- 12:20guilt. And this is what we need to be
- 12:23on guard for. We need to be on guard not from
- 12:27those who outright outwardly show us their sins.
- 12:31We need to be on guard from those who sure look the part,
- 12:37but they are teaching false doctrine.
- 12:40They are teaching heresy. We need to make sure that we are
- 12:45on guard for those suit and ties who try to lead us astray.
- 12:51Friends, we need to be rooted and grounded in the Word of God.
- 12:54If you don't hear anything else that I ever say, you need to be
- 12:59rooted and grounded in the Word of God.
- 13:03You need to be like the Bereans and search the Scriptures for
- 13:07yourself and search for divine counsel from God.
- 13:11Don't take my word for it. 23 Now there was leaning on Jesus's
- 13:20bosom, one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
- 13:24Of course, this is the writer of the Gospel, John here.
- 13:29This is the author of the book. He's Speaking of himself. 24
- 13:33Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him that he should ask who it
- 13:37should be of whom he spoke. So Simon Peter wanted to know
- 13:43who is it that's about to betray Jesus Christ?
- 13:48So he beckons to John and says, Ask him. 25 He then lying on
- 13:54Jesus's breast, said unto him, Lord, who is it?
- 13:5826 Jesus answered, He, It is to whom I shall give a SOP when I
- 14:04have dipped it. When he had dipped the salt, he
- 14:07gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
- 14:10So this salt, this dipping of the bread into the wine, this
- 14:14was meant to be a toast to the celebration.
- 14:19This is a commencement of the Passover, and Judas here is at
- 14:23the place of honor, and then John here is in the second place
- 14:27of honor, and they are so close to the Father.
- 14:30He's got his head against his chest, and he is able to speak
- 14:34to him in a way that the other disciples could not hear.
- 14:38That's how close these two were with Jesus on this night. 27
- 14:46Then after the SOP, Satan entered into him, then said
- 14:51Jesus unto him, That you do, do quickly.
- 14:56So Jesus knew this divine timeline must be fulfilled.
- 15:00And he knew that Judas was so reprobate that he was not going
- 15:04to turn back. And he tells them, whatever you
- 15:06have in your heart to do, go and do it quickly, for he knew his
- 15:10time was cut short. 28 Now no man at the table knew for what
- 15:16intent he spoke this unto him. So you can see that it was
- 15:21shrouded and clouded from the disciples.
- 15:23And if Peter would have known that it was Judas, he would have
- 15:26cut him down on his way out the door.
- 15:30But all these things must happen, and it's no different
- 15:34for you and for me. Sometimes we go to the Lord and
- 15:40we're not too happy with how things are going and we try to
- 15:46argue with Jesus and tell Him to fix all the things that are
- 15:50going on in the world. And we don't realize that all
- 15:53the things that are going on in the world are actually moving
- 15:57all of His plans into reality. And we need to be in tune with
- 16:06Him and listen to Him and trust Him and don't call any of it
- 16:10into question. And just know that if you try to
- 16:13save your life, you will lose it.
- 16:15And what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, but to
- 16:19lose his soul? We do not need to fear the one
- 16:23that can kill the body, but fear him who could not only kill the
- 16:28body, but to cast your soul into eternal damnation. 28 Now no man
- 16:36at the table knew for what intent he spoke this unto him.
- 16:4029 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that
- 16:45Jesus had said unto him, by those things that we have need
- 16:49of against the feast, or that he should give something to the
- 16:53poor. So here you can see that Judas
- 16:58was so sly and cunning that the disciples thought he was going
- 17:02to do a good thing, and they missed it.
- 17:08But Jesus knew. 30 He then, having received the SOP, went
- 17:15immediately out, and it was night.
- 17:19So Jesus talked about that this night was coming where no man
- 17:22could work. He talked about how they must do
- 17:26the work while it's still light out, and they must believe on
- 17:29the light while it's still with them.
- 17:31And here it was night, and it was darkness, and it was closing
- 17:35in on Jesus. 31 Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now
- 17:41is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him?
- 17:4532 And if God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him
- 17:51in himself, and shall straightway glorify him. 31 And
- 17:5532 is glory, glory, glory. This embarrassment, this
- 18:02mocking, this beating, this false worship of his murderers.
- 18:16You can see that it's all glory. And Jesus understood that He
- 18:22must suffer to bring about our salvation.
- 18:26And that is the glory of Him is when we actually choose Him.
- 18:32He could make us worship him, but He doesn't.
- 18:36We have free will and when we choose to worship Him, it brings
- 18:40Him glory. Do not hold back your worship
- 18:44today, Friends. 33 Little children, yet a little while I
- 18:52am with you, you shall seek me. And as I said unto the Jews,
- 18:56where I go, you cannot come. So now I say to you. 34 A new
- 19:01commandment I give unto you, that you love one another, as I
- 19:06have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this
- 19:12shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have loved
- 19:17one to another. So he tells us to love our
- 19:21neighbor as ourselves, and that is just the elementary school
- 19:25level of love. And then he tells us again that
- 19:31we should not love the world or anything in the world.
- 19:35So he's telling us there that we need to love him.
- 19:40Paramount but this kind of Phileo love that he mentions
- 19:46here is the love that we have for our brothers and sisters and
- 19:52it should be in a deeper level than the love that we have for
- 19:58our neighbor. But it is still in a secondary
- 20:03rate to the amount of love that we have for him.
- 20:07But you can see that God is love, and we know from John 3
- 20:12for God so loved the world that he gave not.
- 20:16His only begotten Son, that whoever shall believe in Him
- 20:19will not perish, but have eternal life.
- 20:22So we know here that all of it is love.
- 20:25And that is what is mentioned here, friends, is that it's love
- 20:30and love and more love. And we need to be loving towards
- 20:35our neighbors, we need to be loving towards our brothers and
- 20:39sisters, and we need to love God paramount.
- 20:42And we should not be stained by the things in this life and the
- 20:47things in this world. 36 Simon Peter said unto him,
- 21:01Lord, where do you go? Jesus answered him, where I go,
- 21:05you cannot follow me now, for but thou shalt follow me
- 21:10afterwards. So here they're confused because
- 21:14he's saying where he's going, they cannot come.
- 21:17But we know that we will be with him forever more.
- 21:20So this confusion, Peter wants to clarify.
- 21:25And so Jesus lovingly says, you will eventually follow me into
- 21:31this martyrdom, into this persecution that I'm about to go
- 21:35to. But we know that we will be
- 21:38caught up with him to meet him in the air, and there we will be
- 21:42with him forevermore. 37 Peter said unto him, Lord, why can't
- 21:46I? I follow you now?
- 21:49I will lay down my life for your sake.
- 21:51So here is emotionalism. This is Peter being led by his
- 21:55emotions. But we know that there's going
- 21:58to come a crisis emotion where he cannot push through the
- 22:02barrier. It's easy to say that we'll do
- 22:05something, but it's a whole lot harder to actually put it into
- 22:09practice, friends. And we would do well to know
- 22:12that God brings us to these places where we must put our
- 22:16faith into practice. We cannot just sit on the
- 22:20sidelines and say this and say that we have to put it into
- 22:24practice. And that is what grows our
- 22:26faith, friends, and gets us prepared for all of eternity. 38
- 22:32Jesus answered him, Will you lay down your life for my sake?
- 22:36Truly, truly, I say unto you, the cock shall not crow until
- 22:42you have denied me three times. So Jesus knew everything that
- 22:47was going to happen, and nothing was missed.
- 22:51And we know that God so loved the world that he gave his one
- 22:56and only Son, that whoever will believe in him will not perish,
- 23:02but have eternal life. And we know that we can have
- 23:05eternal life when we place our trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 23:11We know that here Peter looked as if he lost everything, but we
- 23:17can see that Jesus is going to reinstate him when he comes back
- 23:22in his resurrected form. And Peter's going to get a
- 23:25chance to make it right with the Lord.
- 23:28And I believe that Judas had that same opportunity, but he
- 23:32chose not to take it and went and hung himself.
- 23:36What a passage here. What a piece of scripture.
- 23:41This is a lifetime of study right here.
- 23:44We can sit and marvel at how beautiful these words are on a
- 23:50page of masterpiece that has stood the test of time.
- 23:55I'm praying for you, I love you. I'll see you back here tomorrow.
- 24:02God bless you.
