Latest / North Side Territory: A Chicago Cubs Podcast / How Pete Crow-Armstrong’s deal with the Cubs came together
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome into Northside Territory Foul Territory Networks Cubs podcast. I'm
- 0:09Speaker 1: Sahadev Sharma with my partner Patrick Mooney. Patrick, you were
- 0:13Speaker 1: just at the Peak Co Armstrong press conference announcing his
- 0:19Speaker 1: new six year, one hundred and fifteen million dollar deal.
- 0:25Speaker 1: I listened to some of it, and I think we
- 0:29Speaker 1: just chatted right before this, and I think your takeaway
- 0:32Speaker 1: was similar to mine. He seemed emotional, a lot of reflection,
- 0:38Speaker 1: and just a lot of thanks to a bunch of
- 0:43Speaker 1: different people. Like pretty much everyone that was in that room,
- 0:46Speaker 1: he seemed to be honoring in some way. What were
- 0:51Speaker 1: your takeaways that from that press conference.
- 0:57Speaker 2: I think it was that emotional cent or that pete
- 1:03Speaker 2: kind of you drew from throughout that press conference, and
- 1:08Speaker 2: he said his hands were sweaty. I think it was
- 1:12Speaker 2: a little different than playing center field in front of
- 1:16Speaker 2: forty thousand people. I think sitting in that chair and
- 1:19Speaker 2: kind of looking out he started with his parents and
- 1:24Speaker 2: saying how proud he is to have you know, both
- 1:26Speaker 2: their names on the back of his jersey, and you know,
- 1:30Speaker 2: wanting to finally move them out to Chicago or at
- 1:33Speaker 2: least get them a place, you know, I'd imagine within
- 1:38Speaker 2: walking distance of Wrigley Field. I mean, Pete's dad, Matt,
- 1:43Speaker 2: you know our understanding, you'd be watching, he'd be watching
- 1:46Speaker 2: the Cubs games anyways, you know what I mean. I
- 1:48Speaker 2: think even if his son wasn't the starting center fielder,
- 1:52Speaker 2: you know, would love to live in wrigley Ville and
- 1:54Speaker 2: just kind of hang out. And so it kind of
- 1:57Speaker 2: started from there. Then his agents at ca A you
- 2:00Speaker 2: know who had really known him since he was a
- 2:04Speaker 2: freshman at Harvard Westlake, a powerhouse baseball program in South Carolina,
- 2:08Speaker 2: south southern California. Pete was a you know, starting varsity
- 2:13Speaker 2: as a freshman, and I think was somewhat similar to
- 2:19Speaker 2: who he is now of just kind of the pounding
- 2:22Speaker 2: his chest after you know, big moments during the game.
- 2:26Speaker 2: And then I just from you know, the Cub side.
- 2:29Speaker 2: You can really go down the list here of Jared Banner,
- 2:36Speaker 2: who had been the Mets farm director when Pete overslept
- 2:42Speaker 2: like his first day at Mets camp, and Jared had
- 2:47Speaker 2: told that story on our podcast here. But you know,
- 2:51Speaker 2: some tough love there, and then Banner pounding the table
- 2:55Speaker 2: for the Cups to acquire him at the trade headline, Uh,
- 2:58Speaker 2: current major league hitting coat, which is John Mayley and
- 3:01Speaker 2: Dustin Kelly who worked with him in the minors and
- 3:05Speaker 2: helped him kind of corral all of the stuff that
- 3:09Speaker 2: Pete has going on, you know, kind of at the
- 3:12Speaker 2: plate in his head. And Craig Counsel. I believe that
- 3:19Speaker 2: was the moment Pete cursed on air there of Council
- 3:23Speaker 2: doesn't I think Council doesn't give something about whatever. It
- 3:29Speaker 2: was just hilarious. And then of course, you know, thinking
- 3:32Speaker 2: ownership and chairman Tom Riggots was there, you know, Jed Hoyer.
- 3:37Speaker 2: I think his one of Pete's main things was that
- 3:40Speaker 2: from the top down it has been this sort of
- 3:42Speaker 2: like be yourself message, which he really appreciates. And so
- 3:48Speaker 2: I don't know, maybe just because Pete can be so
- 3:51Speaker 2: open and we've known Pete for a bit, I think
- 3:55Speaker 2: it's different when a free agent comes in and you
- 3:57Speaker 2: almost always know it's because the team offered them money,
- 4:00Speaker 2: like this was, even though he wasn't a free agent.
- 4:02Speaker 2: He made a choice, a life changing choice.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, he's making a lot of money, there's
- 4:10Speaker 1: no doubt about that, But this is about he made
- 4:14Speaker 1: it clear that this place makes him very comfortable and
- 4:17Speaker 1: allows him to be who he is while also finding
- 4:22Speaker 1: the best in him, like unearthing the best out of him.
- 4:25Speaker 1: I think he appreciates the balance there where you know,
- 4:28Speaker 1: he has some growth to go through, like he already
- 4:32Speaker 1: has grown a ton, but you know, he can always
- 4:36Speaker 1: get better, he can continue to mature, and he seems
- 4:39Speaker 1: to understand that and want that and want to be
- 4:42Speaker 1: coached up. I did think it was you know, he
- 4:46Speaker 1: can be very endearing when he's like emotional like that.
- 4:49Speaker 1: He was just kind of rambling there for a while
- 4:51Speaker 1: at the start and admitted that he's like, I don't
- 4:53Speaker 1: know how to stop it. I'm just gonna keep going
- 4:56Speaker 1: unless someone stops me here, So jed kind of just like, okay,
- 4:59Speaker 1: why do we questions? Yeah, I thought there were a
- 5:03Speaker 1: lot of early on what I did here. There was
- 5:06Speaker 1: a lot of nice moments, touching moments with the talking
- 5:11Speaker 1: about his parents wearing both their names on his jersey.
- 5:15Speaker 1: That was nice. You know, he seems very reflective for
- 5:19Speaker 1: a twenty four year old. He just turned twenty four,
- 5:22Speaker 1: I believe two days ago, so it's interesting he's got
- 5:27Speaker 1: so much more to do and so much more ahead
- 5:30Speaker 1: of him. You talked about how the agents have known
- 5:34Speaker 1: him for so long. He's been on the radar and
- 5:37Speaker 1: on the spotlight for a long time, like Team USA,
- 5:43Speaker 1: remember those pictures of Team USA. Like he's like a
- 5:47Speaker 1: twelve year old kid. He's been on the radar. The
- 5:51Speaker 1: Cubs had a chance to draft him in the first round,
- 5:54Speaker 1: didn't take that. They corrected that mistake by trading for him.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Banner told that story. Or you know, like you could
- 6:01Speaker 1: overreact to the way Pete behaves or the way he
- 6:08Speaker 1: you know, like you can think he's like this me
- 6:11Speaker 1: guy because he dyes his hair and because he's flashy,
- 6:15Speaker 1: that means he's only about himself. I mean, you get
- 6:19Speaker 1: to know him and that's just not like it doesn't
- 6:21Speaker 1: take long for that to you know, just go out
- 6:23Speaker 1: the window, you talk, you have one conversation with him.
- 6:26Speaker 1: He's not about that. Like it's almost as a reporter,
- 6:31Speaker 1: it can be a little frustrating at times, you know,
- 6:34Speaker 1: because he constantly defers, and it's almost hard to get
- 6:38Speaker 1: him to talk about why he's so good or what
- 6:41Speaker 1: makes him good. You know, he's always looking for ways
- 6:44Speaker 1: to get better or you know, looking for someone to
- 6:49Speaker 1: give credit to other than himself.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean as a reporter, he's close. Maybe not ideal,
- 6:58Speaker 2: but he's great in that, like you have no idea
- 7:01Speaker 2: how he's going to respond to questions. He's real, Like
- 7:07Speaker 2: I think there are times where we we as sort
- 7:10Speaker 2: of a group, can feel it, like where he's you know,
- 7:14Speaker 2: a little annoyed or distracted or uninterested. And then also
- 7:18Speaker 2: there are times where he just kind of like, you know,
- 7:23Speaker 2: sums up a really complicated situation in like two perfect
- 7:27Speaker 2: paragraphs that you're like, all right, that goes right right
- 7:29Speaker 2: in the story, and you know, I think he really
- 7:32Speaker 2: This is another point that Jed had made, and it's
- 7:35Speaker 2: a point well taken when he looked out at Pete's parents,
- 7:41Speaker 2: Matt and Matt and Ashley of they raised someone who
- 7:44Speaker 2: really understands the responsibilities of being a face of the franchise,
- 7:51Speaker 2: that you know, signing autographs, understanding that saying hello to someone,
- 7:57Speaker 2: particularly young fan, can make their day and maybe make
- 8:01Speaker 2: them a baseball fan for the rest of their life. Clearly,
- 8:07Speaker 2: the Chicago connection cannot be discounted here. You know, Pete's
- 8:13Speaker 2: dad's from out here. Pete spent a lot of time
- 8:17Speaker 2: here during the winter, popping up at Bears games in
- 8:22Speaker 2: the United Center, And so I think that, you know,
- 8:26Speaker 2: really makes him accessible to fans in a different way
- 8:33Speaker 2: and in a way that really resonates.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Yeah, he's becoming a face. He's not just a face
- 8:38Speaker 1: of the franchise, a face of MLB. Now, let's take
- 8:43Speaker 1: a quick break and discuss how we got to this point,
- 8:46Speaker 1: how this all came together.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Hey, have you get the age where everything feels a
- 8:51Speaker 3: little bit more difficult the jim, Yes, but everything like
- 8:55Speaker 3: energy crashes in the afternoon.
- 8:59Speaker 4: You know you you might have been reading about low
- 9:01Speaker 4: T and you see your doctor about it and they
- 9:04Speaker 4: want to give you basically shots every week for the
- 9:07Speaker 4: rest of your life. Oh cool, that sounds fun. And
- 9:10Speaker 4: then you dig deeper and you realize what you're signing
- 9:12Speaker 4: up for, and it's three grand a year to shut
- 9:14Speaker 4: down your body's natural production forever.
- 9:16Speaker 3: That is brutal mars Men gives you the same benefits
- 9:20Speaker 3: of optimized testosterone, energy, strength, focus, without shutting your body down.

- 9:28Speaker 3: reset button on your hormone factory instead of shutting.

- 9:45Speaker 4: they're going to ask you where you heard about them.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Please support our show and tell them we sent you.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Patrick. This is not something that came out of nowhere.
- 9:54Speaker 1: This is not an extension that you know, anybody was
- 9:58Speaker 1: really blindsided by. This is you know, we talked to
- 10:03Speaker 1: Pete about this last spring. It's been over a year
- 10:08Speaker 1: that there have been rumors they discussed this last spring.
- 10:13Speaker 1: The offer, obviously what they agreed upon is much higher
- 10:18Speaker 1: than what it was a year ago. The comps went
- 10:22Speaker 1: from Ezekiel Tovar type a deal to Corbyn Carroll and
- 10:28Speaker 1: Jackson Merrill type deal obviously in between there. But this
- 10:35Speaker 1: is this is you know, they laid the groundwork and
- 10:38Speaker 1: have had a built this relationship over the past year
- 10:43Speaker 1: plus to make sure this could happen, And it sounds
- 10:46Speaker 1: like Pete never really felt uncomfortable about it or like
- 10:51Speaker 1: pressured into getting something done. They did a good job
- 10:54Speaker 1: of making sure that all sides were satisfied with the
- 10:58Speaker 1: way this went.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Yeah, in terms of the timeline, Jed Hoyer ballparked it
- 11:06Speaker 2: around fourteen months. And I know they we reported they
- 11:13Speaker 2: said we're tabling talks. It wasn't like totally shut down,
- 11:18Speaker 2: but there were points where, like they knew, they didn't
- 11:20Speaker 2: want to push. So maybe that's we're kind of making
- 11:23Speaker 2: any distinction here, But like they knew there were points
- 11:27Speaker 2: where they wanted to focus on the field. They knew
- 11:33Speaker 2: certain times of year or more conducive towards having productive discussions.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Both sides were pretty motivated to make sure something eventually
- 11:43Speaker 2: got done. And so if we're looking at this spring,
- 11:49Speaker 2: they had looked at the beginning of Cactus League games
- 11:52Speaker 2: as a time to when they wanted to get a resolution.
- 11:58Speaker 2: They didn't, but there was enough momentum that they decided
- 12:00Speaker 2: to keep talking. And then the WBC happens, and understandably,
- 12:08Speaker 2: Pete's like, I want to focus on that. I don't
- 12:11Speaker 2: want to have that distraction. So then he comes back
- 12:14Speaker 2: to camp in Arizona and they kind of get it.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Over the finish line. He roughly doubled what he would
- 12:27Speaker 2: have gotten last year if he had signed that. If
- 12:30Speaker 2: you're looking at a toe var or something like that.
- 12:35Speaker 2: It's important to him to get another to get a
- 12:39Speaker 2: bite at the apple of free agency, you know, not
- 12:44Speaker 2: to when he's still in his early thirties. I think
- 12:47Speaker 2: he'll be thirty when he becomes a free agent something
- 12:50Speaker 2: like that, or maybe heading into his age thirty one season.
- 12:53Speaker 2: But you know, for Pete, I think the way the
- 12:59Speaker 2: way jed just was like Pete wanted to be dropped
- 13:01Speaker 2: off at the right point, the right place in his career.
- 13:04Speaker 2: So it was either going to be kind of like
- 13:07Speaker 2: you know, a shorter term thing that bought out a
- 13:10Speaker 2: year or two a free agency or something that really
- 13:12Speaker 2: was a cub for life deal that like you know,
- 13:17Speaker 2: nine years or like you know, seven plus three options
- 13:21Speaker 2: just like wasn't really what they were looking at. And
- 13:26Speaker 2: so I basically stole your questions to howday have of
- 13:30Speaker 2: asking Jet about the previous cores just to get you know,
- 13:33Speaker 2: something on the record, And he said it wasn't for
- 13:35Speaker 2: lack of trying with contract extensions and that there is
- 13:40Speaker 2: you know, some nuance to that. But I think his
- 13:44Speaker 2: answer redirected it towards we knew how much Pete wanted
- 13:50Speaker 2: to be here and that you know, his preferences were
- 13:54Speaker 2: you know, a parent, and that makes a huge difference
- 13:59Speaker 2: in these tops.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Yeah, the want to matters, right, you have to want
- 14:05Speaker 1: to stay and not that guys in the previous score
- 14:09Speaker 1: didn't want to stay. But you know it's hard to
- 14:14Speaker 1: you know, come to an agreement on these deals. That
- 14:17Speaker 1: it's worked out so well for Jed over the past year,
- 14:23Speaker 1: I mean, I guess more than that really, you know,
- 14:25Speaker 1: like he's he's done more extensions in the past five years.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Then they did like what it was castro Rizzo and
- 14:34Speaker 1: then nothing for a while. I think pedro Strope was
- 14:37Speaker 1: one of the one of the extensions they got done.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Other than that, it just there wasn't a lot of
- 14:45Speaker 1: it came close. If not for the pandemic, maybe Hobby
- 14:48Speaker 1: Bias never would have been you know, traded away and
- 14:52Speaker 1: we wouldn't even be talking about Peek Armstrong. So sometimes
- 14:55Speaker 1: these things work out really well. And in the end,
- 14:59Speaker 1: the Cubs, you know, not extending those guys, not getting
- 15:02Speaker 1: a deal done maybe worked out right. Like there was
- 15:05Speaker 1: a clear down period and extreme struggles for the Cubs
- 15:09Speaker 1: for a few years that fans don't want to deal
- 15:11Speaker 1: with and get tired of. But look, it's led to
- 15:16Speaker 1: this and and right now you have to be happy
- 15:20Speaker 1: to have Peter Armstrong. They they are able to come
- 15:24Speaker 1: together on this long term deal. And you're right, it's
- 15:27Speaker 1: not like a lifetime Cub deal. I think maybe that's
- 15:30Speaker 1: almost like not probably not like Nico is going to
- 15:34Speaker 1: play pass probably this deal that he's signed, but like
- 15:37Speaker 1: that's you know, he's going to be a cup. Yeah,
- 15:41Speaker 1: it's pretty much close to being a Cub for life.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Let's take one more quick break and come back and
- 15:48Speaker 1: talk a little bit more about Pete AJ.
- 15:51Speaker 4: Baseball season is finally here, and there's nothing like listening

- 16:48Speaker 4: tastes this good, nothing hits like home cooking.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Patrick Peaker Armstrong is one of those names that you
- 16:56Speaker 1: see across baseball nowadays. You know, Midsummer he was, you know,
- 17:02Speaker 1: one of the hottest names in baseball. Aaron Judge and
- 17:04Speaker 1: Shoho Tani. They get and deserve all the headlines. And
- 17:09Speaker 1: then I don't think Pete Armstrong is that far behind.
- 17:13Speaker 1: Certainly in Chicago it's you know him, Caleb Williams, and
- 17:17Speaker 1: then some other young stars you want to talk about,
- 17:20Speaker 1: Connor Bdard and Madus Bizzellis. But those two guys, Pete
- 17:24Speaker 1: Armstrong and Caleb Williams are the face. And it sounds
- 17:27Speaker 1: like Pete's getting the endorsements now as well.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I was told recently kind of deals at marketing
- 17:37Speaker 2: deals have come together include Gatorade, Southwest Corona and New Balance,
- 17:46Speaker 2: so a very Elmagojave Bayaz like run. It just shows
- 17:52Speaker 2: how how much people gravitate towards this player, how companies
- 17:59Speaker 2: recogniz as the kind of energy that surrounds Pete and
- 18:05Speaker 2: Wrigley Field. And I think the endorsements are sort of,
- 18:11Speaker 2: you know, secondary to all this. I think it's more
- 18:12Speaker 2: of just Jet even explicitly said like our brand like
- 18:18Speaker 2: and you know, Pete, you know, mentioned how what the
- 18:21Speaker 2: Ricketts family has done to Wrigleyville, And I think there
- 18:28Speaker 2: was kind of this sense from the twenty sixteen team
- 18:31Speaker 2: of like they felt correctly that they had brought a
- 18:34Speaker 2: lot of value to that neighborhood and really helped them
- 18:40Speaker 2: crush that crush it with that investment. And now you
- 18:44Speaker 2: have Pete here coming in and you know, able to
- 18:50Speaker 2: reap the benefits of some of that and also just
- 18:53Speaker 2: feel really anchored in Chicago and can just go out
- 18:59Speaker 2: and play. I mean, I think you see Pete's frustrations
- 19:02Speaker 2: out there at times, you know, how emotional he can be.
- 19:05Speaker 2: I think having this, you know, could really help him
- 19:10Speaker 2: unlock maybe a different part of his personality, a different
- 19:13Speaker 2: side of his personality, maybe a different part of his game,
- 19:16Speaker 2: like who knows, but you know, I can tell you
- 19:19Speaker 2: it did weigh on him a little bit last year
- 19:21Speaker 2: when he turned down that deal. And you know, he
- 19:25Speaker 2: doesn't know if there's a cause and effect, and he
- 19:26Speaker 2: hasn't really thought about it that much. But he sort
- 19:28Speaker 2: of laughed when I asked him, like, if you look
- 19:31Speaker 2: at his season last year, he was not hitting at
- 19:34Speaker 2: all in April and then they get to Dodger Stadium
- 19:37Speaker 2: and a report leaks out that was incorrect in terms
- 19:40Speaker 2: of the numbers, but saying that they had he had
- 19:43Speaker 2: turned it down. And maybe the next day he hits
- 19:48Speaker 2: two huge home runs on SAT. Night Baseball and like
- 19:50Speaker 2: blows the kiss to his mom in the stands and
- 19:53Speaker 2: had that was the beginning of this amazing offensive stretch.
- 19:57Speaker 2: And so we never really know with this stuff, but
- 20:03Speaker 2: we know that the Cubs don't think he's going to
- 20:05Speaker 2: get this huge contract and just like turn it down
- 20:10Speaker 2: in his intensity. But I do think there's something too.
- 20:15Speaker 2: I think Pete alluded to it kind of hit him
- 20:17Speaker 2: last night, like, Okay, this is my routine for the
- 20:19Speaker 2: next six plus years, Like this is where you know
- 20:22Speaker 2: I can you know, go home, you know, day games,
- 20:27Speaker 2: Wrigley Field, knowing who he's playing with, who he's playing for.
- 20:33Speaker 2: That doesn't, you know, define a player's career, but it
- 20:36Speaker 2: doesn't hurt to have that level of comfort and security.
- 20:42Speaker 1: Yeah, instability, right, I think that's probably a theme throughout
- 20:46Speaker 1: this organization with Jet now stable in his position and Nico, Pete, Crow, Armstrong,
- 20:54Speaker 1: Craig Counsel. These these people are going to be around
- 20:56Speaker 1: for a while and you can build a winner around
- 20:59Speaker 1: all of them. All right, we'll have plenty of Pete
- 21:03Speaker 1: talk for one hundred and sixty one plus games left
- 21:07Speaker 1: to go, so we'll make sure to talk plenty of
- 21:10Speaker 1: Pete more about the upcoming season. Thanks so much for
- 21:14Speaker 1: listening to everyone. Make sure to rate, review, subscribe, subscribe
- 21:17Speaker 1: to the YouTube channel, and subscribe to The Athletic where
- 21:19Speaker 1: Patrick and Iron top of all things Cubs. Thanks everyone,
- 21:22Speaker 1: Take care,
