- WEBVTT 00:00:20.009 --> 00:00:23.390 Hello, and welcome to the Living Freed Podcast. 00:00:23.829 --> 00:00:26.570 If this is your first time tuning in, thank you 00:00:26.570 --> 00:00:29.250 so much for joining. And if you have been here 00:00:29.250 --> 00:00:32.259 before, welcome back. I do hope everyone's having 00:00:32.259 --> 00:00:36.079 a great end of summer because, again, it's the 00:00:36.079 --> 00:00:39.100 end. Kids are going back to school. Your kids 00:00:39.100 --> 00:00:41.140 might be going back to school. You might be the 00:00:41.140 --> 00:00:42.920 ones teaching the kids going back to school. 00:00:43.100 --> 00:00:45.299 Or you're like me where you're stuck in the traffic 00:00:45.299 --> 00:00:47.439 of the people taking their kids to go back to 00:00:47.439 --> 00:00:50.859 school. And that's how I know. Summer is closing 00:00:50.859 --> 00:00:54.200 and we're headed into local summer at the beach, 00:00:54.299 --> 00:00:56.500 which is our favorite time of year here when 00:00:56.500 --> 00:00:58.500 you're coastal. If you don't live coastal... 00:00:59.210 --> 00:01:01.890 You should try. It's pretty great. I'm not going 00:01:01.890 --> 00:01:07.450 to lie. Yeah, that's it. You should just, everybody 00:01:07.450 --> 00:01:09.450 should be coastal, except that it would be way 00:01:09.450 --> 00:01:12.049 too crowded. So never mind. I take it back. Being 00:01:12.049 --> 00:01:14.569 coastal is the worst. Everyone would hate it. 00:01:14.769 --> 00:01:17.590 It's just not, it's not it. It's gross. Don't 00:01:17.590 --> 00:01:20.469 do it. Don't move to the coast. Okay. Anyways, 00:01:20.769 --> 00:01:24.450 this week was super busy, but like in the best 00:01:24.450 --> 00:01:28.219 and calmest way possible. We actually ended up 00:01:28.219 --> 00:01:31.319 having a movie night. We as in me and Serena, 00:01:31.420 --> 00:01:34.159 if you know, you know. And then we went to the, 00:01:34.239 --> 00:01:36.019 that was Friday night. And then we went to the 00:01:36.019 --> 00:01:38.659 beach Saturday and she played volleyball with 00:01:38.659 --> 00:01:41.180 her friends. And anyone who knows me knows I 00:01:41.180 --> 00:01:44.540 am not athletic at all. Every once in a while, 00:01:44.620 --> 00:01:46.879 I have some volleyball skills, but I choose to 00:01:46.879 --> 00:01:50.439 not do it in public for those I don't know. I 00:01:50.439 --> 00:01:52.340 keep that tucked away for just like family and 00:01:52.340 --> 00:01:54.879 close friends games where if I end up breaking 00:01:54.879 --> 00:01:58.269 my own nose again, it's fine. because my family 00:01:58.269 --> 00:02:00.989 is already seeing me at my worst. So I laid on 00:02:00.989 --> 00:02:03.629 the beach and I read a book and I watched them 00:02:03.629 --> 00:02:06.230 play. And that was great. I enjoyed it. It was 00:02:06.230 --> 00:02:10.150 perfect. And then Sunday, I possibly made a new 00:02:10.150 --> 00:02:13.110 friend. Fingers crossed. You know, as you get 00:02:13.110 --> 00:02:15.750 older, it gets harder to make friends, y 'all. 00:02:16.210 --> 00:02:20.270 Nobody warns you about that. So if you've ever 00:02:20.270 --> 00:02:23.539 moved, you know making new friends is hard. If 00:02:23.539 --> 00:02:25.180 you're older and you've like had to start over 00:02:25.180 --> 00:02:27.360 in any way, you know, making new friends is hard. 00:02:27.879 --> 00:02:30.539 I'm pretty good at it. And there's definitely 00:02:30.539 --> 00:02:33.099 like a method to it, but it's a lot of hit and 00:02:33.099 --> 00:02:35.759 miss. So anyways, possibly made a new friend. 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:39.060 Very excited. We're into a lot of the same things. 00:02:39.139 --> 00:02:42.039 So I think we could be best friends. It's too 00:02:42.039 --> 00:02:44.599 soon to tell, but it's possible. And then we 00:02:44.599 --> 00:02:46.479 also checked out a new church together and I 00:02:46.479 --> 00:02:48.979 kind of enjoyed it. Not as much as I like Oceanside. 00:02:49.400 --> 00:02:52.710 Shout out Oceanside. I enjoyed it a lot. The 00:02:52.710 --> 00:02:55.289 worship was really good. I cried multiple times. 00:02:55.490 --> 00:02:58.250 I am, however, already missing my Wilmy friends 00:02:58.250 --> 00:03:03.610 and Wrightsville Beach so much. But I get to 00:03:03.610 --> 00:03:06.150 go home for one of my cousin's weddings in just 00:03:06.150 --> 00:03:08.490 a few short weeks and a doctor's appointment. 00:03:08.710 --> 00:03:11.490 So fingers crossed, I get to see some of my Wilmington 00:03:11.490 --> 00:03:15.650 friends and go to a non -seaweed filled beach 00:03:15.650 --> 00:03:18.150 because, well, if you've ever been to Florida, 00:03:18.229 --> 00:03:19.889 you know what I'm saying. And yeah, I'm just 00:03:19.889 --> 00:03:23.530 excited. And I did like paint a pot or whatever 00:03:23.530 --> 00:03:26.090 with Nikki before I left. And I just got the 00:03:26.090 --> 00:03:29.750 text that my mug is ready. So Nikki, if you're 00:03:29.750 --> 00:03:31.370 hearing this, pick up my mug and I'll come get 00:03:31.370 --> 00:03:36.870 it from you. Thank you. Yeah, that's it. That's 00:03:36.870 --> 00:03:38.889 all I have for you for catching up. I know. Crazy. 00:03:38.969 --> 00:03:41.810 Not a lot. Super chill. I told you there's been 00:03:41.810 --> 00:03:45.679 a lot going on, but it's been like calm. nothing 00:03:45.679 --> 00:03:48.699 insane Serena and I are just up early going to 00:03:48.699 --> 00:03:52.199 the gym I've got a lot of work done y 'all I'm 00:03:52.199 --> 00:03:54.460 working on getting video quality ready for you 00:03:54.460 --> 00:03:58.139 in the next couple months for this podcast which 00:03:58.139 --> 00:04:00.060 means I might take a month off and just really 00:04:00.060 --> 00:04:04.240 hunker down and figure that out but I will warn 00:04:04.240 --> 00:04:06.699 you before I do that I promise I would never 00:04:06.699 --> 00:04:10.340 just go MIA on you yeah anyways so let's talk 00:04:10.340 --> 00:04:14.150 about what's in what is in is catching up with 00:04:14.150 --> 00:04:19.149 friends and family. Wow. I've had a lot of coffee, 00:04:19.230 --> 00:04:21.990 so I'm so sorry. But catching up with my friends 00:04:21.990 --> 00:04:24.410 and my family with just phone calls and FaceTimes, 00:04:24.430 --> 00:04:27.550 I have spent the last few days just, I swear 00:04:27.550 --> 00:04:29.329 I've talked to almost everybody. Like from the 00:04:29.329 --> 00:04:33.709 West Coast to the Northeast Coast, everyone. 00:04:34.389 --> 00:04:36.949 The Midwest, I've talked to everybody this week. 00:04:37.110 --> 00:04:40.980 Literally everyone. And it's been great. Just 00:04:40.980 --> 00:04:43.339 a lot of phone calls. I have never had to charge 00:04:43.339 --> 00:04:46.819 my phone so much. And it's, oh, and then even 00:04:46.819 --> 00:04:49.060 people in Europe, I did phone calls even in Europe. 00:04:49.259 --> 00:04:54.000 So yeah, just a lot of catching up phone calls, 00:04:54.040 --> 00:04:56.819 but now I'm planning a trip to Scotland. Freaking 00:04:56.819 --> 00:05:00.019 pumped. Freaking pumped. I'm so excited to go 00:05:00.019 --> 00:05:05.600 to Scotland. Um, okay. What is out? Seaweed beaches. 00:05:06.079 --> 00:05:10.459 Um, gross. Let me tell you. If you've never been 00:05:10.459 --> 00:05:12.339 to a beach with a lot of seaweed, you wouldn't 00:05:12.339 --> 00:05:14.100 get it. Now, when I lived on the West Coast, 00:05:14.319 --> 00:05:17.779 there were a couple beaches, Cough Cough, La 00:05:17.779 --> 00:05:20.560 Jolla, that had a lot of seaweed and I never 00:05:20.560 --> 00:05:22.160 wanted to get in the water. Like the water was 00:05:22.160 --> 00:05:23.879 beautiful, but I didn't want to get in the water 00:05:23.879 --> 00:05:26.680 for some reason. They're saying like the month 00:05:26.680 --> 00:05:28.420 of July, there's a lot of seaweed in the water 00:05:28.420 --> 00:05:31.319 here and it's not even blue and crystal clear 00:05:31.319 --> 00:05:33.860 like it is in Wilmington or La Jolla. So it's 00:05:33.860 --> 00:05:36.139 like, ew, why would I do that? Like I can see 00:05:36.139 --> 00:05:39.490 through the water. That's fine. But there's so 00:05:39.490 --> 00:05:42.370 much seaweed. But then you like swim past like 00:05:42.370 --> 00:05:44.310 10 feet of seaweed and then there's like no seaweed 00:05:44.310 --> 00:05:46.209 and you're fine. But it's still, it's not the 00:05:46.209 --> 00:05:49.569 vibe. It's not the vibe at all. Wilmington or 00:05:49.569 --> 00:05:52.069 like Wrightsville Beach has the most beautiful 00:05:52.069 --> 00:05:54.850 crystal clear blue water. And I know a lot of 00:05:54.850 --> 00:05:56.490 people think I'm being dramatic when I say that. 00:05:56.589 --> 00:05:58.189 But if you've like, if you've been, you know, 00:05:58.370 --> 00:06:00.610 like the last five years, it's just gotten so 00:06:00.610 --> 00:06:03.029 freaking pretty. But the thing is, is down in 00:06:03.029 --> 00:06:05.209 Florida, the water gets really blue and crystal 00:06:05.209 --> 00:06:07.509 clear and pretty going into the fall and the 00:06:07.509 --> 00:06:10.420 winter. And that's when I can like swim in it 00:06:10.420 --> 00:06:12.579 and do things. So that's what we're waiting for. 00:06:12.779 --> 00:06:14.980 We're just holding on to hope for that because 00:06:14.980 --> 00:06:16.500 when I came in the winter, it was beautiful. 00:06:16.819 --> 00:06:18.980 Anyone who listens to the podcast probably heard 00:06:18.980 --> 00:06:22.139 me talk about it back then. Someone just screamed 00:06:22.139 --> 00:06:23.959 out my window and that really freaked me out. 00:06:24.079 --> 00:06:27.300 Did not like that. I don't see anybody though. 00:06:27.459 --> 00:06:31.339 Anyways, yeah, so that's us catching up. I know 00:06:31.339 --> 00:06:34.100 it's quick, but guys, it's quick because I told 00:06:34.100 --> 00:06:36.139 you we're going to do a pretty serious episode 00:06:36.139 --> 00:06:38.430 today. We're going to talk about the neuroscience 00:06:38.430 --> 00:06:42.629 behind the Lord's Prayer. So let's kind of dive 00:06:42.629 --> 00:06:51.930 in to this not -so -easy topic. First, I want 00:06:51.930 --> 00:06:54.470 to put out there the very obvious disclaimer 00:06:54.470 --> 00:06:58.529 that I am, in fact, not a scientist of any kind. 00:06:58.569 --> 00:07:01.029 I'm not a psychologist. I'm not a therapist. 00:07:01.269 --> 00:07:04.910 And I know that may be coming as a huge shock 00:07:04.910 --> 00:07:08.170 to some of you. But I had to say it. It had to 00:07:08.170 --> 00:07:10.709 be done. I'm sorry if that burst your bubble 00:07:10.709 --> 00:07:13.110 or an idea of who I am. I'm none of those things. 00:07:13.310 --> 00:07:16.389 But I will be listing all the links from which 00:07:16.389 --> 00:07:19.470 I got all of my information from, from the research 00:07:19.470 --> 00:07:22.350 and videos and everything in the show notes. 00:07:22.490 --> 00:07:24.870 So if you want to find it and do your own research, 00:07:25.089 --> 00:07:28.689 you are more than welcome to. Okay? I am just 00:07:28.689 --> 00:07:31.540 solely here just to break down. that information 00:07:31.540 --> 00:07:35.420 I found on this topic and simplify it, and I'm 00:07:35.420 --> 00:07:38.839 now serving it to you on a very shiny platter. 00:07:39.319 --> 00:07:42.399 So back in season one, there was an episode on 00:07:42.399 --> 00:07:44.620 how to pray. It was pretty straightforward, and 00:07:44.620 --> 00:07:46.800 if you haven't listened to it, I highly recommend 00:07:46.800 --> 00:07:50.300 going back at some point and doing so, only because 00:07:50.300 --> 00:07:53.079 we talked very briefly about the Lord's Prayer. 00:07:53.550 --> 00:07:55.769 What is the Lord's Prayer, you may be asking? 00:07:56.050 --> 00:08:00.829 Well, back in Matthew 6, verses 9 -13, Jesus 00:08:00.829 --> 00:08:03.490 tells us that when we pray, we should pray the 00:08:03.490 --> 00:08:07.350 following, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed 00:08:07.350 --> 00:08:09.990 be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, 00:08:10.129 --> 00:08:13.149 on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day 00:08:13.149 --> 00:08:15.449 our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as 00:08:15.449 --> 00:08:17.889 we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into 00:08:17.889 --> 00:08:20.230 temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine 00:08:20.230 --> 00:08:22.290 is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory 00:08:22.290 --> 00:08:27.180 forever. Amen. Now, some people go down into 00:08:27.180 --> 00:08:30.600 verse 14, which says, for if he forgive men their 00:08:30.600 --> 00:08:33.139 trespasses, your heavenly father will also forgive 00:08:33.139 --> 00:08:36.480 you. Side note is not all Bible translations 00:08:36.480 --> 00:08:40.580 have the part about it saying, for thine is the 00:08:40.580 --> 00:08:42.120 kingdom and the power and the glory forever. 00:08:42.419 --> 00:08:45.960 Amen. And that is because the difference comes 00:08:45.960 --> 00:08:49.740 down to the underlining Greek manuscripts and 00:08:49.740 --> 00:08:53.320 the translators. The James King version, the 00:08:53.320 --> 00:08:58.659 KJV, relies on the Texas version, textus, which 00:08:58.659 --> 00:09:02.679 is T -E -X -T -U -S, which includes the doxology 00:09:02.679 --> 00:09:06.320 for thine is the kingdom in Matthew 6 .13. The 00:09:06.320 --> 00:09:09.980 English Standard Version, which is the ESV, and 00:09:09.980 --> 00:09:12.879 as many of you know, is my preferred at the moment. 00:09:13.059 --> 00:09:16.559 It follows an older, more recently discovered 00:09:16.559 --> 00:09:19.580 manuscript that omits this phrase, considering 00:09:19.580 --> 00:09:25.039 it a later version um that was added or so simply 00:09:25.039 --> 00:09:26.720 that's just what google says because i thought 00:09:26.720 --> 00:09:29.320 it was weird and i wanted to know why one had 00:09:29.320 --> 00:09:31.200 them and the other didn't so simple google search 00:09:31.200 --> 00:09:33.899 will tell you that crazy enough we all know i 00:09:33.899 --> 00:09:37.460 love to google okay anyways let's talk about 00:09:37.460 --> 00:09:39.779 how using the lord's prayer will affect different 00:09:39.779 --> 00:09:43.200 parts of your brain so your prefrontal cortex 00:09:43.200 --> 00:09:46.740 is going to be engaged early in the prayer through 00:09:46.740 --> 00:09:50.470 intentional focus relational connection and cognitive 00:09:50.470 --> 00:09:54.830 orientation. Then we have your amygdala. It will 00:09:54.830 --> 00:09:57.769 be down -regulated during the contemplative or 00:09:57.769 --> 00:10:01.149 meditative phrases, reducing fear, threat scanning, 00:10:01.330 --> 00:10:06.009 and anxiety loops. Your ACC gets stimulated during 00:10:06.009 --> 00:10:09.289 lines dealing with community, grace, relational 00:10:09.289 --> 00:10:12.850 reconciliation, which supports empathy and compassion. 00:10:13.350 --> 00:10:17.470 And lastly, your autonomic nervous system uses 00:10:18.450 --> 00:10:22.389 Rhythmic vocalization and pacing stimulates the 00:10:22.389 --> 00:10:25.370 vagus nerve, increasing parasympathetic nervous 00:10:25.370 --> 00:10:29.389 system activity to lower heart rate and calm 00:10:29.389 --> 00:10:33.190 emotional reactivity. So let's dive into verse 00:10:33.190 --> 00:10:43.789 9. Jesus saying, pray then like this is activating 00:10:43.789 --> 00:10:47.870 the prefrontal The prefrontal cortex because 00:10:47.870 --> 00:10:51.710 he starts with an instruction. Our father triggers 00:10:51.710 --> 00:10:54.549 attachment and safety networks replacing that 00:10:54.549 --> 00:10:57.389 isolation or stress with relational security. 00:10:57.830 --> 00:11:01.950 Our father, not my father, gives our brain a 00:11:01.950 --> 00:11:04.549 different connection to the heavenly father from 00:11:04.549 --> 00:11:08.360 your earthly father. Listen. I know starting 00:11:08.360 --> 00:11:10.820 a prayer off this way could be a little uncomfy 00:11:10.820 --> 00:11:14.080 because we have to think of what percentage of 00:11:14.080 --> 00:11:16.620 us actually have a good relationship with our 00:11:16.620 --> 00:11:19.200 earthly fathers because research says around 00:11:19.200 --> 00:11:22.120 50 % of Americans have a good relationship with 00:11:22.120 --> 00:11:25.519 their dad, which means there's 50 % of us who 00:11:25.519 --> 00:11:28.740 do not. But here's the thing though, we look 00:11:28.740 --> 00:11:31.500 at things through the understanding of Westerners, 00:11:31.500 --> 00:11:34.519 but the Eastern culture, especially back then, 00:11:34.909 --> 00:11:37.330 Their first thought in our Father wouldn't have 00:11:37.330 --> 00:11:39.950 been their Father. Their first thought would 00:11:39.950 --> 00:11:43.110 have been of God. Where do we see in the Bible 00:11:43.110 --> 00:11:46.009 the first time God shows up as a Father? I know 00:11:46.009 --> 00:11:47.830 that probably comes off as a random question, 00:11:47.950 --> 00:11:50.029 but I promise you it's leading to something. 00:11:50.629 --> 00:11:54.629 Well, my answer for you is in Deuteronomy 32, 00:11:55.049 --> 00:11:58.330 verse 6. Moses asked the people of Israel, Is 00:11:58.330 --> 00:12:00.909 he not your Father who created you, who made 00:12:00.909 --> 00:12:04.240 you, and established you? But we also see God 00:12:04.240 --> 00:12:06.919 hint at a parental relationship all the way back 00:12:06.919 --> 00:12:09.600 in Exodus when referring to Israel, his son. 00:12:09.779 --> 00:12:12.340 Saying, our father who art in heaven, hallowed 00:12:12.340 --> 00:12:15.440 be thy name, takes the focus off of us and activates 00:12:15.440 --> 00:12:18.500 the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for 00:12:18.500 --> 00:12:22.080 intention, direction, and focus. Something I 00:12:22.080 --> 00:12:24.559 want to point out is the word heaven in verse 00:12:24.559 --> 00:12:28.539 9. It's different from heaven in verse 10. For 00:12:28.539 --> 00:12:32.799 verse 9, the Greek word is actually plural. It's 00:12:32.799 --> 00:12:35.360 more for the heavens above us, like David talks 00:12:35.360 --> 00:12:38.799 about in Psalms, or the sky and the stars. But 00:12:38.799 --> 00:12:41.759 then also we have the heavenly place, which is 00:12:41.759 --> 00:12:45.340 where God resides. This heaven is plural, like 00:12:45.340 --> 00:12:50.139 we see in Genesis 1, verse 1. Jesus is reminding 00:12:50.139 --> 00:12:52.860 us that God sits above it all and is the creator 00:12:52.860 --> 00:12:56.019 of all. Hallowed be thy name. Hallowed means 00:12:56.019 --> 00:12:58.970 holy. slash set apart in case you didn't know. 00:12:59.110 --> 00:13:01.570 It's more than an acknowledgement of who God 00:13:01.570 --> 00:13:04.049 is. It's an understanding of who God is. And 00:13:04.049 --> 00:13:06.730 it's an understanding for us on how we should 00:13:06.730 --> 00:13:09.750 show up in the world as a representation of him. 00:13:10.029 --> 00:13:15.049 Also, side note number two is back in the day, 00:13:15.149 --> 00:13:17.730 y 'all, the ancient world that is, your name 00:13:17.730 --> 00:13:20.690 was a reflection of identity or essence of who 00:13:20.690 --> 00:13:22.889 you were, which is interesting because when God 00:13:22.889 --> 00:13:26.789 responds to Moses as I am who I am, It can also 00:13:26.789 --> 00:13:31.029 be translated as I will be who I will be. I think 00:13:31.029 --> 00:13:33.129 that also shows us why sometimes people would 00:13:33.129 --> 00:13:35.950 go through things in the Old Testament or also 00:13:35.950 --> 00:13:37.909 the New Testament because we have Saul who gets 00:13:37.909 --> 00:13:42.590 turned to Paul. But how their names change because 00:13:42.590 --> 00:13:45.289 it's a representation of who they are and what 00:13:45.289 --> 00:13:47.809 they've gone through or really what they're going 00:13:47.809 --> 00:13:51.039 through if you think about Ruth and Naomi. Okay, 00:13:51.100 --> 00:13:52.720 that's it for that little side note. I just, 00:13:52.799 --> 00:13:55.500 you know me, I love to give a little bit of extra 00:13:55.500 --> 00:13:58.820 information. All right, for verse 10, thy kingdom 00:13:58.820 --> 00:14:02.440 come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 00:14:03.000 --> 00:14:06.820 Your kingdom come. It reduces the high cognitive 00:14:06.820 --> 00:14:10.179 load and mental exhaustion of trying to excessively 00:14:10.179 --> 00:14:13.200 control the future and its outcome. This verse 00:14:13.200 --> 00:14:15.740 is also about restoring the separation that has 00:14:15.740 --> 00:14:18.679 happened morally between heaven on earth. Because 00:14:18.679 --> 00:14:21.139 think about it, Jesus had also told us that the 00:14:21.139 --> 00:14:24.000 kingdom of heaven is at hand. We spend so much 00:14:24.000 --> 00:14:26.860 time waiting or wishing to go to heaven, but 00:14:26.860 --> 00:14:29.559 this is his reminder to bring heaven here. Verse 00:14:29.559 --> 00:14:32.720 11 says, Give us this day our daily bread. Give 00:14:32.720 --> 00:14:36.240 us this day. Restricts mental focus to the present 00:14:36.240 --> 00:14:39.019 moment, interrupting anxious, catastrophic thoughts 00:14:39.019 --> 00:14:43.240 of like, what if? that loop again and again in 00:14:43.240 --> 00:14:45.580 our head. Daily bread, probably not referring 00:14:45.580 --> 00:14:48.279 to sourdough bread, if I had to take a wild guess. 00:14:48.460 --> 00:14:50.860 When we talk about bread, or better, when the 00:14:50.860 --> 00:14:53.120 Bible talks about bread, it's referring to what 00:14:53.120 --> 00:14:55.980 you need. When ancient Jews talked about bread, 00:14:56.179 --> 00:14:58.440 they thought about something in the past, something 00:14:58.440 --> 00:15:00.740 true in the present, and they were anticipating 00:15:00.740 --> 00:15:03.620 something in the future. We also need to go back 00:15:03.620 --> 00:15:06.679 to Exodus for another understanding. being when 00:15:06.679 --> 00:15:09.340 God provided manna for them daily and taught 00:15:09.340 --> 00:15:11.379 them to go and only gather what they needed. 00:15:11.860 --> 00:15:14.659 Otherwise, anything the next day would turn into 00:15:14.659 --> 00:15:18.320 maggots. This taught them to one, trust that 00:15:18.320 --> 00:15:21.460 he will provide, and two, also not to become 00:15:21.460 --> 00:15:25.659 gluttonous or obsessive or anxious or controlling 00:15:25.659 --> 00:15:28.820 because this verse says to only rely on what 00:15:28.820 --> 00:15:31.759 you need, not on what you want. It's teaching 00:15:31.759 --> 00:15:34.549 us to say, God, what do I need for the mission 00:15:34.549 --> 00:15:37.110 at hand? It's not about our wants, it's about 00:15:37.110 --> 00:15:39.850 our needs. This bread essentially was to feed 00:15:39.850 --> 00:15:42.710 their anticipation and ours and know that at 00:15:42.710 --> 00:15:46.090 the end, it will be filled. Next up is verse 00:15:46.090 --> 00:15:49.330 12. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our 00:15:49.330 --> 00:15:53.870 debtors. Forgive us as we forgive. Engages emotional 00:15:53.870 --> 00:15:57.750 regulation to soothe the limbic brain, releasing 00:15:57.750 --> 00:16:00.870 the toxic psychological toll of resentment and 00:16:00.870 --> 00:16:04.740 guilt. Let's get one thing very clear. Forgiveness 00:16:04.740 --> 00:16:08.200 does not mean access. It is just a one -way street. 00:16:08.919 --> 00:16:12.340 Jesus slash God forgave us our sins without us 00:16:12.340 --> 00:16:15.379 asking or owning it. We can give forgiveness 00:16:15.379 --> 00:16:19.360 the same way. I literally always say forgiveness 00:16:19.360 --> 00:16:22.200 is for you. It's not for the person you're actually 00:16:22.200 --> 00:16:24.929 forgiving. If you are acknowledging it, you're 00:16:24.929 --> 00:16:27.429 acknowledging the weight of it and what it means 00:16:27.429 --> 00:16:30.210 to you to forgive in the first place. Forgiveness 00:16:30.210 --> 00:16:34.210 actively rewires the brain by reducing the activity 00:16:34.210 --> 00:16:37.610 in the threat and pain center like the amygdala 00:16:37.610 --> 00:16:42.230 and interior insula while strengthening the prefrontal 00:16:42.230 --> 00:16:45.830 cortex. This shift lowers stress hormones, stops 00:16:45.830 --> 00:16:49.049 revenge cravings, and replaces chronic resentment 00:16:49.049 --> 00:16:53.179 with emotional regulation and empathy. Now, doesn't 00:16:53.179 --> 00:16:57.259 that sound so nice? Okay, y 'all, last verse. 00:16:57.379 --> 00:17:00.639 We're almost there. It says, and lead us not 00:17:00.639 --> 00:17:04.480 into temptation, but deliver us from evil. James 00:17:04.480 --> 00:17:07.759 1 tells us that God does not ever lead us into 00:17:07.759 --> 00:17:10.859 temptation. This part of the prayer is where 00:17:10.859 --> 00:17:14.259 spiritual warfare comes into play. We don't live 00:17:14.259 --> 00:17:17.160 in a neutral space. We will end up playing on 00:17:17.160 --> 00:17:21.789 or we're like being played on one side. or we 00:17:21.789 --> 00:17:24.769 can be active participants of the other, whether 00:17:24.769 --> 00:17:28.049 we realize it or not. And there are temptations 00:17:28.049 --> 00:17:31.309 that the kingdom of darkness will use. So by 00:17:31.309 --> 00:17:33.809 this prayer, or part of it, it's kind of like 00:17:33.809 --> 00:17:36.769 a reminder to be present and aware of temptations, 00:17:36.769 --> 00:17:39.910 but also the protection of our hearts and minds. 00:17:40.400 --> 00:17:42.720 We even see Jesus live out the Lord's Prayer 00:17:42.720 --> 00:17:45.079 throughout the 40 days in the wilderness when 00:17:45.079 --> 00:17:47.980 he gets tempted by the devil and the Garden of 00:17:47.980 --> 00:17:52.059 Gethsemane when he says, Thy will be done. Now, 00:17:52.180 --> 00:17:54.440 at the end of this, Jesus follows up with an 00:17:54.440 --> 00:17:57.180 additional reminder to forgive because we have 00:17:57.180 --> 00:17:59.720 been forgiven. And honestly, I think it's because 00:17:59.720 --> 00:18:02.579 nothing will cripple us faster in our hearts, 00:18:02.579 --> 00:18:05.599 minds, and spirit as an individual or community 00:18:05.599 --> 00:18:10.480 than unforgiveness. Maybe I should do an episode 00:18:10.480 --> 00:18:15.200 on forgiveness? Not that I'm all that great at 00:18:15.200 --> 00:18:19.640 it, but it's an idea. So, in a simple shiny platter 00:18:19.640 --> 00:18:22.539 summary, the Lord's Prayer acts as a neurological 00:18:22.539 --> 00:18:26.400 reset. Its structured progression engages the 00:18:26.400 --> 00:18:29.339 prefrontal cortex for focus, down -regulates 00:18:29.339 --> 00:18:32.859 the amygdala to lower stress hormones like cortisol, 00:18:33.630 --> 00:18:36.589 and activates the limbic system and vagus nerve 00:18:36.589 --> 00:18:39.650 to shift the body out of fight or flight, survival 00:18:39.650 --> 00:18:43.230 state, and into calm and peace. It's kind of 00:18:43.230 --> 00:18:45.569 crazy that as a culture, we have just glossed 00:18:45.569 --> 00:18:48.210 over a prayer that Jesus literally gave instructions 00:18:48.210 --> 00:18:51.670 to pray and to now know how it affects our brain 00:18:51.670 --> 00:18:54.250 and body. So if you feel weird about praying, 00:18:54.430 --> 00:18:56.950 maybe this will give you a place to start. And 00:18:56.950 --> 00:18:58.869 don't forget, you can check out the episode on 00:18:58.869 --> 00:19:02.150 how to pray from season one. Okay, that's it. 00:19:02.480 --> 00:19:03.119 Bye y 'all.
