- 0:00Some movies scare you on screen and others you feel in your
- 0:05bones. In 1973, a film hit theaters
- 0:09that made people faint, vomit, and even claim to be possessed.
- 0:15But what most don't know is that the real horror might have
- 0:19happened behind the camera. Tonight we're going to uncover
- 0:23the story of The Exorcist, a movie so dark and so cursed that
- 0:30even those who made it claimed that something followed them
- 0:33home. I'm your host, Cody Richardson,
- 0:36and this is Mystery Archives. When you talk about horror
- 0:45cinema, The Exorcist stands at the top not just for what's on
- 0:50screen, but for what went wrong behind it.
- 0:54The film was based on William Peter Blatty's 1971 novel, which
- 0:58itself was inspired by a true case, the 1949 exorcism of a boy
- 1:04only known by the pseudonym of Roland Doe.
- 1:08That real event, documented by priests in Maryland, allegedly
- 1:12involved moving furniture, guttural voices and the word
- 1:17hell being carved into the boy's flesh.
- 1:20Director William Friedkin and Bladdy wanted to tell the story
- 1:23truthfully and not as fantasy, but as something that could
- 1:28actually happen. They filmed in Washington, DC
- 1:31and New York, transforming ordinary neighborhoods into
- 1:35scenes of demonic horror. But even before the cameras
- 1:39rolled, something strange began to happen.
- 1:42The set of the McNeil House, Reagan's home in the film,
- 1:46suddenly caught fire. A bird had flown into a circuit
- 1:50box, causing a massive electrical blaze that burned
- 1:54down most of the stage. Everything was destroyed except
- 1:59for one room, Reagan's bedroom, the site of the possession.
- 2:05It remained untouched, perfect, almost as if protected.
- 2:11It seemed to be the first of many signs that something was
- 2:15not quite right. Production then halted for weeks
- 2:19while repairs were made, and Friedkin, known for being
- 2:23skeptical, reportedly asked a Catholic priest to come to the
- 2:26studio and blessed the set before they resumed filming.
- 2:31The shoot for the film was only supposed to last 85 days, and it
- 2:35took more than 200. Accidents became routine.
- 2:40Equipment malfunctioned constantly, and actors and crew
- 2:43were injured in very bizarre ways.
- 2:46Ellen Burstein, who played Reagan's mother, suffered a
- 2:50permanent spinal injury during a stunt gone wrong in the film.
- 2:54When Reagan slaps her and sends her crashing to the floor, That
- 2:58scream that you hear, that's real.
- 3:06Linda Blair, who was just 12 years old during filming, was
- 3:10thrown violently by a mechanical rig, which also caused her to
- 3:15fracture her spine. The cold temperature of her room
- 3:18scene kept near freezing for realistic breath vapor left her
- 3:23shaking uncontrollably between takes.
- 3:26And then came the deaths. Actor Jack Mcgrawan, who played
- 3:31Burke Dennings, died just after finishing his scenes.
- 3:35Actress Valiski Maliaros, who played Father Karis's mother,
- 3:40died shortly after him. Both characters, coincidentally
- 3:44also die in the film. A night watchman assigned to the
- 3:48set passed away unexpectedly, and so did a technician's
- 3:52brother. In total, nine people connected
- 3:56to The Exorcist would die before the film ever premiered.
- 4:00When the film was sent to be processed, certain reels came
- 4:03back inexplicably damaged. Audio was warped, images were
- 4:09distorted, and Friedkin called it a devil's glitch.
- 4:14Whenever the cameras were turned on, there always seemed to be
- 4:18something else in the room with the crew.
- 4:21Whispers about a presence soon enveloped everyone.
- 4:26Cold drafts would sweep through closed sets, props moved in
- 4:31between takes, lights flickered with no electrical issues ever
- 4:36found. One cameraman claimed that he
- 4:39saw what looked like a face flash across a monitor during
- 4:43playback, and not an actor or a part of any scene, just one
- 4:49frame, and then it was gone. Another technician quit after
- 4:53claiming that he heard growling through his headset, though no
- 4:56one else seemed to hear it. There's one story as well that
- 5:00stands out, and it happened during a late night rehearsal.
- 5:05A heavy refrigerator unit, which was part of the set dressing for
- 5:09Reagan's room, shifted several inches on its own, and the whole
- 5:14crew could hear it scraping across the floor.
- 5:17Even Friedkin, the skeptic, admitted that the atmosphere
- 5:21fell cursed after the fire and the accumulating misfortunes.
- 5:27Blatty urged Friedkin to bring in a priest again, so Father
- 5:32Thomas Birmingham, who had advised on the film, performed a
- 5:36blessing on set. He reportedly said that
- 5:39afterward the crew seemed lighter, but that evil, as he
- 5:44put it, had been disturbed, not banished.
- 5:49According to interviews, strange events continued even after the
- 5:52blessing. One day, while filming the
- 5:55exorcism scene, the temperature in the sound stage plummeted,
- 6:00and it plummeted so sharply that crew members could see their own
- 6:03breath in the air. The studio thermometer red below
- 6:08freezing, yet the air conditioning was off.
- 6:12Then came the Thunder, the sound of booming cracks outside the
- 6:16warehouse. And this normally wouldn't be
- 6:18strange, except for the fact that there were no storms
- 6:23outside when The Exorcist film finally premiered.
- 6:27The chaos then spread to the audience in multiple cities.
- 6:32Moviegoers fainted, vomited, or ran screaming from the theater.
- 6:38Paramedics were called to some of the showings.
- 6:42In Rome, a theater reportedly stood across from a 400 year old
- 6:46church, and during the first screening there, lightning
- 6:50struck the church's cross, causing it to fall to the
- 6:54ground. People began calling the film
- 6:56cursed. Some Catholic groups denounced
- 6:59it as demonic, and others claimed that by watching it, one
- 7:04was inviting possession. And then, amid the hysteria,
- 7:09Warner Brothers, the studio responsible for The Exorcist,
- 7:14received reports of a man who had passed away in the theater
- 7:18from a heart attack during the film's most violent scene.
- 7:22In one of the most unsettling coincidences in cinematic
- 7:25history, a real life murderer appears in the film itself
- 7:30during the infamous hospital and geography scene when young
- 7:34Reagan is undergoing medical tests, you see actual medical
- 7:38staff, not actors, performing the procedure.
- 7:42One of them, the radiology technician standing beside Linda
- 7:46Blair, was Paul Bateson. Bateson was a real employee at
- 7:51the NYU Medical Center, where Friedkin shot the scene to make
- 7:54it look authentic. He was quiet, skilled and
- 7:59unassuming, exactly what a director wanted to portray.
- 8:03Realism. But just a few years later,
- 8:07Bateson was arrested for murder. In 1979, he was convicted for
- 8:14killing film critic Addison Viral, who had been brutally
- 8:17murdered in his New York apartment.
- 8:20Police connected Bates into the crime after he drunkenly
- 8:23confessed to a journalist at a bar, claiming that he had killed
- 8:28Viral after meeting him at a gay nightclub.
- 8:32Even worse, prosecutors and the NYPD investigators suspected
- 8:37Bateson was also responsible for a string of unsolved murders in
- 8:41the early 1970s, a series known as the Bag Murders.
- 8:47And these murders were absolutely horrific.
- 8:50I mean, murder itself is God awful.
- 8:54But these men, when they were found, they were found
- 8:57dismembered and stuffed into plastic bags floating down the
- 9:01Hudson River. The crimes were never solved,
- 9:05but the timing and Bateson's own vague admissions suggested that
- 9:10he may have been involved. William Friedkin, who was both
- 9:14horrified and fascinated, later visited Bateson in prison.
- 9:18Their conversation inspired Friedkin's 1980 film Cruising,
- 9:24starring Al Pacino, a movie about a serial killer praying on
- 9:28men in the underground New York club scene.
- 9:31The real life connection really is chilling in a film about
- 9:34demonic possession featuring a man who would later be convicted
- 9:37of murder, a killer immortalized on film years before anyone
- 9:42knew. I had mentioned previously a few
- 9:46notable deaths surrounding The Exorcist, but to give you the
- 9:50full scope of just how much darkness surrounded it's filming
- 9:54and release, these are all the deaths associated with the film
- 10:00Jack Mcgrawan. He played Burke Dennings, the
- 10:04drunken film director and the story who dies after being
- 10:07thrown from a window by Reagan's demonic force.
- 10:11McGowan died shortly after finishing his scenes from
- 10:15complications related to the flu and the film was in post
- 10:19production. He never did live to see it.
- 10:24Vasiliki Malerios, who played Father Karis's elderly mother in
- 10:28the film, also died during post production, albeit of natural
- 10:32causes. But like her character, she
- 10:35passed before the film's release.
- 10:37While shooting in Rome, actor Max von Sydow, who played Father
- 10:41Marin, received word that his brother had died unexpectedly in
- 10:46Sweden. He left the set for the funeral,
- 10:49obviously incredibly shaken. As filming began, 12 year old
- 10:54Linda Blair lost her grandfather.
- 10:56The family took it as an omen that death had entered the
- 11:00production even before cameras had started rolling.
- 11:04There were also other deaths that aren't typically talked
- 11:08about surrounding the film. And night Watchman who was
- 11:13assigned to the set died unexpectedly.
- 11:17A crew member's newborn baby died during filming, and an
- 11:21actor in one of the early scenes was later killed in a motorcycle
- 11:25accident. None of these incidents alone
- 11:28prove anything, but together they seem to form a chilling
- 11:33pattern of loss that really can't be ignored, in my opinion.
- 11:38But even after the film came out, there were certainly
- 11:41tragedies that seem to be loosely connected to it.
- 11:44Mercedes Mccambridge, the voice of the demon Pazuzu, rather
- 11:48iconic, really, suffered a terrible personal loss.
- 11:52Her son actually murdered his wife and children before then
- 11:57taking his own life in 1987. Maybe it's all coincidence, the
- 12:03kind that accumulates when you blend religion and fear and
- 12:07human frailty. But maybe the film just didn't
- 12:09depict evil. Maybe it truly did disturb
- 12:12something. I've covered this topic before
- 12:16and this was several years ago, but I have my own story to tell
- 12:21and it's actually the only time in Mystery Archives history that
- 12:27I've had something manifest in my home as a result of a topic
- 12:33that I was researching. I've told the story many a times
- 12:37in my live streams. It actually, I mean, it occurred
- 12:40whilst I was editing the original video, so I can't quite
- 12:44recall if I included it within that video or not, but I figured
- 12:48I would go ahead and talk about it again here and now.
- 12:51So I remember that I had recorded my video and my office
- 12:57setup actually was towards this part of the room.
- 13:01My house is not very big. This is kind of like my dining
- 13:04room area over here. As you can sort of tell, my
- 13:07setup hasn't moved a whole lot since then, but I remember
- 13:13editing it. I was editing the original video
- 13:17and I heard a strange popping sound.
- 13:20And this, I believe from what I remember, was probably like
- 13:24between like 4:00 and 6:00 in the afternoon.
- 13:26So it was still light outside. There was no storm or anything
- 13:30like that, but I heard the strange electrical popping sound
- 13:33and I remember standing up and there there's a window where my
- 13:38PC setup used to be. And I remember looking out over
- 13:42thinking like maybe it was a transformer or something like
- 13:45that, albeit it didn't seem to be loud enough.
- 13:48And obviously my, my power wasn't interrupted or anything
- 13:52like that. So I'm like, you know, maybe,
- 13:54maybe something happened nearby. I I don't know I dismissed it at
- 13:58first, but the weird thing that happened was when I sat down I
- 14:04had for context the monitor that I had wasn't very good on anti
- 14:10glare. So it kind of especially with
- 14:12the sunlight hitting it a little bit it it tended to refract part
- 14:16of the room. With that being said, I sat down
- 14:21and off in the corner by my front door I saw in the bottom.
- 14:28So this would have been my bottom left of the screen.
- 14:31I saw some kind of figure and all I know is now I was raised
- 14:39religious for a short period of time.
- 14:41I was raised Catholic. I've been very open about that,
- 14:45but I'm more I would consider myself more of a spiritual
- 14:49theist personally, as in I don't, you know, I I'm a very
- 14:54spiritual person, but I don't necessarily adhere to any
- 14:59specific religion in particular. Anyways, with that, with that
- 15:03being said, it literally struck so much fear in me just from
- 15:09seeing this figure right? And I know for a fact at that
- 15:12time there was no one else in the house with me other than my
- 15:16dog. And I'll get to that later here
- 15:19in or in just a moment. But I remember seeing the
- 15:25reflection of the figure in my monitor and something, it
- 15:31triggered something in me where I literally started praying out
- 15:36loud. Like I was praying out loud out
- 15:39of pure terror. And I believe I started saying
- 15:43the Our Father and within, I want to say it felt like easily
- 15:495-10 minutes of this, but it had to have maybe been like, if I
- 15:55were to guess between 30 and 60 seconds.
- 15:59And then I remember looking like I was, I was so scared, you
- 16:03guys, that I couldn't continue to look at the figure in my
- 16:06screen. And I sure as shit, as, as tough
- 16:09as we like to be sometimes when you encounter something like
- 16:12this, something that's so out of your depth of normalcy, I'll be,
- 16:16I'll be straight up. I'll be, you know, I was, I was
- 16:19too scared to turn around and see what could be there and what
- 16:24would have made it even worse, as if I couldn't fucking see it.
- 16:27And then like, I look back on my screen or something and it's
- 16:29still there. You know what I mean?
- 16:30Like, God, God, I have chills just thinking about it now.
- 16:35But Long story short, I began to pray out loud and this figure
- 16:41just vanished. And that feeling of terror and
- 16:45oppression vanished with it. But I remember being very
- 16:49freaked out over that and that really led me to the conviction
- 16:54that I really think there's something dark and evil that
- 16:58surrounds this film. And with that being said, the
- 17:04film that is shown these days or the film that made it to
- 17:09widespread dissemination, as far as like the film that you can
- 17:14purchase on DVD, Blu-ray, stream, all of that VHS I'm sure
- 17:19back in the day was actually not the original cut of the film.
- 17:24The original cut of the film is what people believe to actually
- 17:27be truly cursed or haunted or however you want to look at it.
- 17:33But that was my experience. And, and what makes it even
- 17:37weirder is for for the longest time prior to that, and even
- 17:42after, for no reason at all, my dog Luna would stare into that
- 17:47corner like she was watching something.
- 17:51And it used to freak me out. I I remember, I'd be like, can
- 17:54we not do that? You know, this was, you know,
- 17:59before even anything manifested. And then obviously that was the
- 18:02first thing on my mind anytime she would do it after.
- 18:07And it, it certainly could could have just been a coincidence or
- 18:11just weird timing. I have no idea.
- 18:14But yeah, that day, no one was, no one was there with me.
- 18:19My ex at the time was out somewhere, I can't remember
- 18:24exactly. I think she was with her parents
- 18:25or something. So it was just me and and Luna.
- 18:28And I know for a fact that that definitely wasn't my dog.
- 18:31So yeah, I have some personal ties to this story.
- 18:36And I think for me, that just makes it really hit home a
- 18:40little harder. As I was recording this, Luna
- 18:44just so happens to be laying over on the linoleum area that I
- 18:49have over by my front door in that very corner.
- 18:52And it freaked me the fuck out because I heard like, a weird
- 18:58scratching noise. And I was like, you got to be
- 19:01shitting me right now. And thankfully, this time it was
- 19:06very much a false alarm. For a film that's half a century
- 19:11old, The Exorcist continues to unsettle.
- 19:15It's not just because of spinning heads or projectile
- 19:18vomit. It's because we feel deep down
- 19:21that maybe it captured something.
- 19:24Something real. Something that doesn't care
- 19:27about cameras or scripts or credits.
- 19:32Something that still wants to be seen with fires and injuries,
- 19:38deaths and whispers of possession.
- 19:42All of these things tied to 1 terrifying film and arguably one
- 19:48of the most terrifying ever made.
- 19:50Were these coincidences or consequences?
- 19:55Maybe there's a reason The Exorcist feels so different from
- 19:58any other horror movie. Maybe the evil on screen we see
- 20:02isn't just fiction but a reflection.
- 20:06But I'll let you be the judge of that.
- 20:08But if you rewatch it alone and the lights start to flicker.
- 20:12Or, God forbid, you see a figure in the corner of your room.
- 20:16Don't look away. You might just want to say a
- 20:20prayer or two. Thank you guys so much for
- 20:25watching this episode. I'm definitely integrating more
- 20:29in person segments. I've had a couple of friends
- 20:31suggest that to me, fellow Youtubers, that they think that
- 20:35part of the reason why my numbers are down a good amount.
- 20:38And again, I'm not just trying to bitch when I say that is that
- 20:41perhaps people are thinking that I'm AI or YouTube itself is
- 20:45considering that I'm AI, which I'm very much not obviously.
- 20:50And if I was, I wouldn't, I wouldn't fucking know that I
- 20:52was. But with that being said, guys,
- 20:54if you enjoyed the video, please hit the like button.
- 20:57Hype it if you can. I know that it's a pretty new
- 21:00feature and it's weird I even don't have access to it, which
- 21:03makes zero sense to me. I'm not even on other people's
- 21:06videos or different accounts that I have as far As for
- 21:11watching independently outside of the creator sphere.
- 21:15So if you can definitely hype it up.
- 21:17I've heard that it helps. Certainly leave me a comment
- 21:20below letting me know your thoughts and subscribe if you're
- 21:25not subscribed already. All that stuff really does help
- 21:27me out tremendously. You can support my work if you
- 21:30want to go above and beyond aside from those things by
- 21:34becoming a patron or a channel member here on YouTube.
- 21:38I had to change some things up because YouTube's channel
- 21:41membership system is kind of broken.
- 21:44It tends to promote members only content over just like the
- 21:50regular videos and I think that was most definitely a
- 21:53contributing factor to the whole numbers being down and that sort
- 21:57of a thing. So if you do become a channel
- 21:59member by clicking join here on YouTube, shoot me an e-mail at
- 22:02mysteryarchives@gmail.com. And if you are in the second
- 22:07tier or higher, then you get access to a Google Drive folder
- 22:12that has all of my content, a bunch of behind the scenes
- 22:15stuff, just a bunch of goodies for you that I'll give you
- 22:19access to. And Patreon you get access to
- 22:22the same folder if you're the second tier or higher.
- 22:25And most of my content is already on Patreon ad free.
- 22:30I tend to upload the videos after I I try for before, but
- 22:34it's usually right after I upload them on YouTube.
- 22:37I do it on Patreon. So aside from that, guys, I did
- 22:40just put out my 4th book. So I've got stories from the
- 22:44archives volumes one through 4. Now you can purchase those from
- 22:48beyondthefraypublishing.com or Amazon, or you can purchase them
- 22:53from my store, which will be a physical copy that I send out to
- 22:57you that I autograph. I'll be it.
- 22:59I think it's a couple bucks more by comparison, but it's just for
- 23:02me to be able to cover shipping and I don't I don't make a ton
- 23:06on them to be entirely honest, guys, but you know, a little
- 23:09bit, every little bit helps for sure.
- 23:11But with that being said, visit my store at Mystery Archives dot
- 23:16my Shopify dot com if you would like to.
- 23:19So I've kind of tried to have some stuff rolling out
- 23:23consistently, but I have some bigger projects in the works
- 23:27that will definitely be coming out here shortly in November.
- 23:31So appreciate you all as always. And yeah, this has been Cody
- 23:36here at Mystery Archives. Make sure to stay safe out there
- 23:39from creepy manifestations and cursed movies, demons and all
- 23:44the rest of it, and I'll see you next time.
- 23:47Take care.
