- 0:00Speaker 1: Let's do it, Jeff Legwald time.
- 0:01Speaker 2: Jeff brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers,
- 0:04Speaker 2: IBEW Local 68. You start with a job, you end
- 0:07Speaker 2: with a career. Broncos win 30-16 yesterday down in Arizona. Jeff,
- 0:13Speaker 2: let's start with Bo Nix. He made a play with
- 0:17Speaker 2: his legs, an actual real-life dynamic play, a 62-yard touchdown run.
- 0:24Speaker 2: We've been waiting for it. It's the biggest thing that's
- 0:26Speaker 2: been missing so far this year. It's the thing that
- 0:29Speaker 2: gets him going. Jeff, how much did that play mean
- 0:33Speaker 2: for Knicks, for Sean Payton, for this Broncos offense, maybe
- 0:37Speaker 2: even going forward?
- 0:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I think they hope it. It just is that
- 0:43Speaker 3: confidence factor. You know, injured guys coming back from injury
- 0:48Speaker 3: will always say there is always the moment of confidence
- 0:52Speaker 3: when you– are forced to put yourself in a position
- 0:56Speaker 3: that may be close to what it was when you
- 0:59Speaker 3: got injured or whatever it is, or just, you know,
- 1:03Speaker 3: kind of the season he's having where, you know, it's
- 1:06Speaker 3: sort of a weekly hammering of the nail, you know,
- 1:09Speaker 3: why don't you run more? Why don't you throw more
- 1:11Speaker 3: long passes? Why don't you do this? Why don't you
- 1:15Speaker 3: do that? You know, just to have a play where
- 1:17Speaker 3: it all goes right. Uh, probably, uh, you know, felt
- 1:22Speaker 3: pretty damn good on the plane as he, you know,
- 1:25Speaker 3: as they flew home last night. And I think they hope,
- 1:29Speaker 3: you know, just that little sliver of confidence and Sean Payton, frankly,
- 1:32Speaker 3: being very adamant after the game, this is our guy
- 1:37Speaker 3: type of thing, you know, no wavering. It's the, it's
- 1:40Speaker 3: the most adamant he's been this season when he's, you know,
- 1:44Speaker 3: been asked about Bo in any fashion. So I, I
- 1:47Speaker 3: sort of put those two things together. I will say, uh,
- 1:51Speaker 3: I've seen a few plays over the years. I've not
- 1:54Speaker 3: seen such a lack of awareness by 11 defenders. My
- 2:00Speaker 3: favorite is Jonah Coleman is out to the left and
- 2:05Speaker 3: is out of bounds in the Cardinal bench. And they're
- 2:10Speaker 3: still plastering a man to man and he's out of bounds.
- 2:14Speaker 3: The defender is chasing him. out of the field of play. And,
- 2:19Speaker 3: you know, you can't even touch the ball when you
- 2:22Speaker 3: return anyway. So, yeah, just, you know, two things together,
- 2:28Speaker 3: you know, the old two things can be true. A
- 2:31Speaker 3: really good play for Knicks and it really turned the game, frankly.
- 2:37Speaker 3: And yet, I just have not seen much like that
- 2:41Speaker 3: from a defensive standpoint in a very long time.
- 2:43Speaker 2: No, it's quite honestly, Leggy, like, It's always been the
- 2:47Speaker 2: risk about running man against Denver is, is that, you know,
- 2:50Speaker 2: when you have your back to Bo Nix, he can,
- 2:52Speaker 2: he can kill you with it. He hasn't done it
- 2:54Speaker 2: yet this year. And now it's something for Steve Spagnuolo
- 2:57Speaker 2: and every other defensive coordinator that is about to face
- 3:00Speaker 2: him to consider. I want to ask you about the
- 3:04Speaker 2: very first offensive play of the game by the Broncos.
- 3:08Speaker 2: I joked before that even if Cortland Sutton had had
- 3:13Speaker 2: all 11 defenders draped on him, that Bo Nix would
- 3:17Speaker 2: have thrown that ball because I'm pretty sure it was
- 3:20Speaker 2: made very clear to him. you will throw a vertical
- 3:23Speaker 2: ball to start this football game. But also like, that's
- 3:27Speaker 2: a good play call by Sean Payton. Like, okay, run
- 3:30Speaker 2: the dig with Cortland Sutton and Bo, whatever you do,
- 3:32Speaker 2: just let the damn thing go.
- 3:34Speaker 1: It was good to see this.
- 3:36Speaker 2: This game was a good opportunity for Knicks to kind
- 3:39Speaker 2: of do some soft toss and find a swing again.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Well, you had to, if you weren't going to do
- 3:46Speaker 3: it against this defense.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:48Speaker 3: That that was going to be, you know, the ultimate
- 3:50Speaker 3: red flag. And I think that's what that opening play is.
- 3:55Speaker 3: They're fairly certain after a week of preparation that they're
- 3:59Speaker 3: going to get the look they got on defense and
- 4:03Speaker 3: that they're going to be able to get the ball
- 4:06Speaker 3: in there. You know, that was probably of all the
- 4:10Speaker 3: prep work they did, of all the plays they looked at,
- 4:13Speaker 3: that was probably absolutely the one they were most sure about.
- 4:18Speaker 3: And that's why they opened the game with it. And,
- 4:23Speaker 3: you know, I think, again, you're looking at a head
- 4:26Speaker 3: coach trying to sort of bring the mentality back to
- 4:31Speaker 3: the quarterback of look what can happen when you get,
- 4:36Speaker 3: when you trust your eyes and when you trust the
- 4:38Speaker 3: play call and you trust the route. I mean, who's
- 4:44Speaker 3: the receiver he's most comfortable with? Cortland Sutton. You know,
- 4:47Speaker 3: who's the receiver they called that play for? Cortland Sutton.
- 4:51Speaker 3: I mean, they put, they set the table in every way.
- 4:54Speaker 3: I think again, just to, you know, you got to
- 4:59Speaker 3: do it to believe it sometimes. And I think they're
- 5:02Speaker 3: just hoping they can get some of these things to
- 5:06Speaker 3: click a little bit and maybe the quarterback won't worry
- 5:11Speaker 3: so much. And, you know, maybe, you know, in-house they'll,
- 5:15Speaker 3: they'll relax a little bit too and, and not be
- 5:18Speaker 3: so not, you know, it's not an everything's fixed day,
- 5:22Speaker 3: you know, at, at, in Bronco land, you know, out
- 5:26Speaker 3: there today, they, they had plenty to look at on offense,
- 5:31Speaker 3: you know, to go over, but, but I think you're right.
- 5:34Speaker 3: I think that first play I think this, you know,
- 5:37Speaker 3: the scramble touchdown, I think those are all things they're hoping,
- 5:41Speaker 3: you know, our, our chips are, and and what they
- 5:45Speaker 3: need them.
- 5:45Speaker 4: To do all right um look yesterday's game was a
- 5:49Speaker 4: lot of fun so let's uh but like you said
- 5:53Speaker 4: i think it's a little bit of uh you did
- 5:54Speaker 4: that you passed the test you needed to pass um which.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Counts you know yeah it does count and listen.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Just discredit it but you know four plays were 186
- 6:05Speaker 3: of the yard so you know i think.
- 6:08Speaker 4: Including, like you said, a run where nobody got near
- 6:10Speaker 4: Bo that I've never seen.
- 6:11Speaker 1: It was great.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Nate also pulled out the okey-doke that apparently Troutman pulled
- 6:17Speaker 4: on his corner, and the corner ran himself out of
- 6:19Speaker 4: the play, too.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Real quick, though, Nate threw this out there.
- 6:22Speaker 4: Now, I don't think this is the name that you
- 6:24Speaker 4: or I would put out there for trade bait, but
- 6:27Speaker 4: if they were to think about trading some of their guys.
- 6:31Speaker 4: Nate said they're 7-0 without Sertan, so put him up
- 6:34Speaker 4: for trade.
- 6:35Speaker 1: But would they think about.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Jeff, they're only allowing 14 points per game in games
- 6:42Speaker 2: in which Patrick Sertan doesn't play.
- 6:43Speaker 1: So obviously, ipso facto, they're better without him.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Nate wants him gone. Well, I'll just say you guys
- 6:50Speaker 3: have stumbled on the latest press box game, which is
- 6:54Speaker 3: trigger leggy. LAUGHTER So there's about six people during the game.
- 7:02Speaker 3: Now that they run that, they run that theory by
- 7:08Speaker 3: at various points during the game, just to watch how
- 7:11Speaker 3: long I can actually hold it together.
- 7:13Speaker 1: To see if you can take it.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Yeah. So it's, it's become quite the sport these days.
- 7:19Speaker 4: Would they, would they consider though, like a Riley Moss
- 7:21Speaker 4: or whatever? Like, would they consider if they want to
- 7:24Speaker 4: go for Jake on moving anybody or they just keeping everybody?
- 7:27Speaker 4: Cause it's too important.
- 7:29Speaker 3: I just, I, you know, I've tried to tell people
- 7:32Speaker 3: how important they think corner is.
- 7:36Speaker 1: We don't want to listen, Leggy.
- 7:37Speaker 4: It's not a QB.
- 7:38Speaker 2: No, no.
- 7:39Speaker 3: I just, I want to tell you, you know, whatever
- 7:42Speaker 3: I've said, multiply it by 10. Now look, they're going
- 7:45Speaker 3: to listen to any offer. You know, when the phone rings,
- 7:47Speaker 3: you pick it up. It's, it's every team calls a
- 7:51Speaker 3: lot of teams at the trade deadline. There's a lot
- 7:54Speaker 3: more action that goes nowhere, you know, Kind of like
- 7:57Speaker 3: junior high dances. There's a lot of talk and not
- 8:02Speaker 3: much real action going on. But they would listen to
- 8:09Speaker 3: anything other than Sertan or whatever. But what we're talking
- 8:16Speaker 3: about is exactly why they wouldn't get rid of a corner.
- 8:19Speaker 3: They've been able to, the last two years now, to
- 8:24Speaker 3: overcome and win games... when the best player on their
- 8:29Speaker 3: team isn't in uniform and they've been able to do
- 8:31Speaker 3: that because they were very smart about what they've done
- 8:34Speaker 3: at a, at a, you know, Elway was ahead of
- 8:38Speaker 3: the curve. Elway called corner, a foundational position when he
- 8:42Speaker 3: took the GM job, you know, in 2011. So this
- 8:48Speaker 3: is not a new theory inside the Bronco building. And I,
- 8:51Speaker 3: you know, look how well Barron's playing right now. Look
- 8:54Speaker 3: how well Abrams drain is playing right now. That's, that's
- 8:58Speaker 3: championship defense. When you can do that down with your
- 9:02Speaker 3: second and third level corners and still match up in
- 9:07Speaker 3: any way you want.
- 9:08Speaker 4: How much, how much great, how much grade school dancing
- 9:13Speaker 4: did you do there, Jeff?
- 9:15Speaker 3: Not a lot. That's why I know I had a
- 9:17Speaker 3: couple of Halloween dances.
- 9:18Speaker 4: I could think of that old junior high dancer, a
- 9:20Speaker 4: whole lot of just this thing.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Leggy, let's talk about the backfield a little bit. Jonah Coleman.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Lead in snap count yesterday coming back from injury. And
- 9:30Speaker 2: he sure was the fourth quarter guy that Sean Payton
- 9:33Speaker 2: relied on. You know, we read in the coverage that J.K.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Dobbins didn't talk to the media after the game. Maybe
- 9:38Speaker 2: you can tell us a little bit what that situation
- 9:41Speaker 2: was like. But in the meantime, Coleman, Harvey, Dobbins, what's
- 9:46Speaker 2: this look like going forward?
- 9:48Speaker 3: Well, you know, the head coach reaffirmed today that it
- 9:53Speaker 3: looked awfully good when Jonah Coleman had the ball And
- 9:57Speaker 3: I think I think the head coach is, is sort of,
- 10:02Speaker 3: you know, in his own way, letting anyone know that
- 10:06Speaker 3: it is time for, you know, better things to happen
- 10:10Speaker 3: on offense. And you can't watch the Coleman carries and
- 10:14Speaker 3: not think, okay, that guy has to get it more.
- 10:16Speaker 3: But he, he said immediately after the game, Coleman needs
- 10:20Speaker 3: to get more touches. And he said it again today,
- 10:24Speaker 3: you know, in a different fashion. But it's the same message,
- 10:28Speaker 3: you know. So I think get used to him getting
- 10:31Speaker 3: a lot of snaps. Now, you know, J.K. Dobbins is
- 10:34Speaker 3: going to be involved and Harvey will be involved. But,
- 10:38Speaker 3: you know, Coleman had a good blitz pickup yesterday.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Sure did.
- 10:41Speaker 3: A good read. And it wasn't just getting the way block.
- 10:46Speaker 3: You know, he comes with purpose when he's doing that.
- 10:50Speaker 3: And he's a quiet guy, but you can tell that
- 10:54Speaker 3: the furnace runs hot there. He wants the ball, and
- 10:58Speaker 3: he wants it a lot, and he's not going to
- 11:02Speaker 3: demand it. He's not going to say he should get
- 11:04Speaker 3: more carries, but he fully understands when they hand it
- 11:08Speaker 3: to him what he's expected to do. And, look, he's
- 11:12Speaker 3: the shortest distance between two points runner, and that's what
- 11:15Speaker 3: they need right now. They need decisiveness. And they need
- 11:19Speaker 3: people just getting up the field because second and five
- 11:22Speaker 3: looks pretty good and you can do some things.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Jeff, real quickly before I let you go, injury updates,
- 11:28Speaker 2: Jalen Waddell, Zach Allen, what do we know?
- 11:32Speaker 3: You know, Allen looked okay after the game to me.
- 11:35Speaker 3: I think, you know, Waddell, that was unless something much
- 11:41Speaker 3: better happened today, I think that's going to be a
- 11:43Speaker 3: little missed time. He went into the x-ray room in
- 11:47Speaker 3: the stadium and then I believe he was in a
- 11:50Speaker 3: sling when he went to the bus, but sometimes the
- 11:54Speaker 3: sling is just so you don't move it around during
- 11:57Speaker 3: the flight and everything. But I'll probably know a little
- 12:01Speaker 3: more tomorrow, but I think that's going to be a
- 12:03Speaker 3: little bit of a mistime.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald's got it all covered for ESPN.com.
- 12:07Speaker 2: We talk to him every Monday and Friday on the
- 12:10Speaker 2: Crackman and Lindahl Show. Leggy, well done as always. We
- 12:14Speaker 2: appreciate it. Hope you had a great trip to the desert,
- 12:16Speaker 2: and we'll talk to you later this week.
- 12:18Speaker 3: See you, fellas. Take care.
