- 0:00Chapter 2 of Hosea, Dear God, please be with us as we read
- 0:04through this chapter and give us insight and wisdom in Jesus
- 0:09name, Amen. Chapter 2 Say of your brothers,
- 0:14my people, and of your sisters, my loved one.
- 0:18Rebuke your mother. Rebuke her, for she is not my
- 0:23wife and I am not her husband. Let her remove the adulterous
- 0:28look from her face and the unfaithfulness from between her
- 0:33breast. Otherwise I will strip her naked
- 0:36and make her as bare as on the day she was born.
- 0:40I will make her like a desert, turn her into a parched land,
- 0:47and slay her with thirst. I will not show my love to her
- 0:51children because they are the children of adultery.
- 0:56Their mother has been unfaithful and has conceived them in
- 1:00disgrace, She said. I will go after my lovers who
- 1:05give me my food and my water, my wool and my linen, my olive oil
- 1:10and my drink. Therefore I will block her path
- 1:14with thorn bushes. I will wall her in so that she
- 1:17cannot find her way. She will chase after her lovers
- 1:21but not catch them. She will look for them but not
- 1:25find them. Then she will say, I will go
- 1:28back to my husband, as at first, for then I was better off than
- 1:33now. She has not acknowledged that I
- 1:38was the one who gave her the grain, the new wine and oil, who
- 1:43lavished on her the silver and gold which they used for Bale.
- 1:49Therefore I will take away my grain when it ripens, and my new
- 1:54wine when it is ready. I will take back my wool and my
- 1:58linen intended to cover her naked body.
- 2:01So now I will expose her lewdness before the eyes of her
- 2:05lovers. No one will take her out of my
- 2:08hands. I will stop all her
- 2:11celebrations, her yearly festivals, her new moons, her
- 2:15Sabbath days, and all her appointed festivals.
- 2:19I will ruin her vines and her fig trees, which she said were
- 2:24her pay from her lovers. I will make them a thicket, and
- 2:29wild animals will devour them. I will punish her for the days
- 2:34she burned incense to the bales. She decked herself with rings
- 2:41and jewelry and went after her lovers.
- 2:44But she for but me she forgot, declares the Lord.
- 2:49Therefore I am now going to allure her.
- 2:52I will lead her into the wilderness and speak tenderly to
- 2:56her. There I will give her back her
- 3:00vineyards and make the valley of Acor a door of hope.
- 3:05There she will respond as in the days of her youth, as in the day
- 3:10she came up out of Egypt. In that day, declares the Lord,
- 3:14you will call me my husband, You will no longer call me my
- 3:19master. I will remove the names of the
- 3:23bales from her lips. No longer will their names be
- 3:27invoked. In that day, I will make a
- 3:29covenant for them with the beasts of the field, the birds
- 3:33in the sky, and the creatures that move along the ground.
- 3:37Bow and sword and battle I will abolish from the land, so that
- 3:42all may lay down in safety. I will betroth you to me
- 3:50forever. I will betroth you in
- 3:52righteousness and justice, in love and compassion.
- 3:56I will betroth you in faithfulness, and you will
- 3:59acknowledge the Lord in that day.
- 4:02I will respond, declares the Lord.
- 4:05I will respond to the skies, and they will respond to the earth,
- 4:10and the earth will respond to the grain, the new wine, and the
- 4:14olive oil. They will respond to Jezreel.
- 4:17I will plant her for myself in the land.
- 4:20I will show my love to the one I called, not my loved one.
- 4:25I will say to those called not my people, You are my people and
- 4:31they will say you are my God. So there was a few things that I
- 4:41noticed when I read through this.
- 4:44In verse 8, it says she has not acknowledged I was the one.
- 4:49That's God who gave her the grain, the new wine.
- 4:52Now this is obviously Israel that is being metaphorically
- 4:56talked about and then it talks about burning incense to bales.
- 5:04So that kind of stood out to me as one of the rituals that is a
- 5:09Bale ritual. And then I also when you get to
- 5:15verse 16, I noticed in that day, this is what I believe is when
- 5:20Jesus reigns here on earth. And then it says I will, it says
- 5:26bow and sword and battle I will abolish from the land so that
- 5:31all may lay down or lie down in safety.
- 5:35That's the Millennium time frame.
- 5:37There's going to be no other time like Jesus said that there
- 5:41will be wars and rumors of wars and it's just going to continue
- 5:45on like that in the in the earth until Jesus returns and when
- 5:50Jesus does this restoration. So way back when Hosea was
- 5:55talking about it, he was looking forward or was being shown
- 5:58something from God about the Millennium time frame, which I
- 6:01think is really cool. So I'll read the questions and
- 6:05answers for chapter 2. Why refuse to love children of
- 6:10adultery? This continues the metaphor
- 6:13showing the terrible consequences of unfaithfulness
- 6:19to God. It is contrasted with God's
- 6:21promise to call the Israelites children of the living God.
- 6:26What is the significance of the grain, the new wine and oil?
- 6:31This is a powerful reference to the blessings of the covenant.
- 6:35These words are also found in Deuteronomy Chapter 7, verse 13
- 6:40in a context demonstrating God's love and blessing in response to
- 6:45Israel's obedience. God was the one who provided
- 6:49these basic necessities for Israel, so he would take them.
- 6:53So he would take them away as punishment for Israel's
- 6:57unfaithfulness. When they idolatry, when they
- 7:01were worshipping Bail, Why? And I guess other fake false
- 7:08gods. Why stop God appointed
- 7:12celebrations? This was actually a picture of
- 7:15the destruction that would come to Israel.
- 7:17A destruction so complete that the people would be forbidden to
- 7:21practice their rich religious customs.
- 7:23Their religion had become empty ritual.
- 7:27God hates insincere religious rituals, especially when
- 7:32accompanied by idolatry. So if we are, you know, doing
- 7:40all these religious activities, but we're not close to God,
- 7:43that's what he's not happy about.
- 7:46Or if we're or if we have idols in front of us.
- 7:51Why does God act like a jealous lover?
- 7:55Though God is sovereign and in need of nothing, He has chosen
- 7:59to reveal himself as a God deeply in love with His
- 8:03creation. Hosea shows that God is not
- 8:07merely a business like overseer of the world who methodically
- 8:11dispenses appropriate judgement. He is a God with feelings.
- 8:15He can be grieved, angered, frustrated, or delighted by our
- 8:20behavior. God illustrates the side of His
- 8:24nature by describing a spouse who has been betrayed and who
- 8:28swings from emotion to emotion. Throughout the Bible, the threat
- 8:33of punishment is consistently followed by tender promises of
- 8:37intimacy. Why would Israel call God her
- 8:41husband instead of her Master? Throughout the book of Hosea,
- 8:46God relates to Israel as a husband to a wife.
- 8:51It is. It is a striking, bold image of
- 8:54God. The intimate for bear,
- 8:57forbearing, forgiving love that God has for Israel is deeper
- 9:02than the relationship of a master and his servant.
- 9:05And as Israel is restored, she too will describe her
- 9:10relationship to God in these intimate terms.
- 9:16And that's the end. For chapter 2.
- 9:18We'll continue. And chapter 3 is really short,
- 9:21so we'll probably do 3:00 and 4:00.
- 9:23So I will start with chapter or continue with chapter 3.
- 9:29This is Hosea's reconciliation with his wife.
- 9:34The Lord said to me, go show your love to your wife.
- 9:39Again, though she is loved by another man and is an
- 9:44adulteress, love her as the Lord loves the Israelites, though
- 9:49they turn to other gods and love the sacred Raisin cakes.
- 9:56So I bought her for 15 shekels of silver and about a Homer and
- 10:03a lethic of barley. Then I told her you were to live
- 10:07with me many days. You must not be a prostitute or
- 10:11be intimate with any man, and I will behave the same way toward
- 10:15you. For the Israelites will live
- 10:17many days without a king or a Prince, without sacrifice or
- 10:23sacred stones, without ephod or household gods.
- 10:27Afterwards the Israelites will return and seek the Lord their
- 10:31God and David their king. They will come trembling to the
- 10:36Lord and to His blessings in the last days.
- 10:41Now I just paid attention to this.
- 10:44It said afterwards. So first it says that they will
- 10:47go for many days without king or Prince.
- 10:50And I wonder if that's that, you know, this time frame now,
- 10:55obviously when both of the kingdoms, Israel first was
- 11:00conquered by Assyria and then Judah was conquered by Babylon,
- 11:06that kind of end that ended the kings.
- 11:09And then it wasn't until 1948 when Israel became a nation
- 11:14again. And then they didn't have a
- 11:16king, they had a Prime Minister. So they've had different
- 11:20leaders. So they haven't had kings or
- 11:22priests during this time. And they also have not had a
- 11:26temple. And since the second temple was
- 11:31destroyed, there's not been another temple.
- 11:34And of course, they do have plans and designs for 1/3
- 11:38temple. But this is, you know, prophecy
- 11:42that's been written a very long time ago.
- 11:45I'll have to go back again to the beginning to remember what
- 11:48period of BC it was like. So it was 753 to 715.
- 11:54BC was Hosea's ministry in Israel.
- 11:58And so this is, you know, quite a long time ago that this was
- 12:02talked about. And again, it's prophecy that,
- 12:06you know, has come true, that portion where it's many days
- 12:10without a king right now. And it says afterward the
- 12:15Israelites will return. Could that be May of 19, May
- 12:2014th of 1948, when the Israelites, you know, they were
- 12:24dispersed everywhere and then they returned.
- 12:27But I don't know if that I mean some are, but not all.
- 12:32And it says return and seek the Lord their God and David their
- 12:37King. So I, I don't know if that's
- 12:41happening right now. And I just think it's
- 12:45interesting that David their king is mentioned seeking David
- 12:49their king. Because if you are, when we read
- 12:52Ezekiel, you will notice that it talks about David their king.
- 12:58And, and I seriously wonder if when the resurrection occurs,
- 13:03like when Jesus returns and people are gathered to him, it
- 13:08says the dead in Christ will rise first.
- 13:10In fact, maybe David already did rise up because there was that
- 13:15one of the gospels that talked about graves opened and people
- 13:19roamed around the city the day that Jesus died and resurrected.
- 13:27I guess it was on his resurrection day.
- 13:29But one of the Gospels talks about that, which I find very
- 13:32interesting, and it doesn't say what happened after that, which
- 13:36I also find surprising. So I don't know if it was
- 13:40temporary or if they actually ascended with Jesus and was that
- 13:44the first fruits? I I really don't know.
- 13:47These are questions that I have and the Bible I haven't found an
- 13:51answer in the Bible that clarifies that.
- 13:54But anyway so we know that when Jesus returns, those who are
- 14:00alive will be changed instantly and receive immortal bodies, non
- 14:06perishable bodies. So the bodies will be changed of
- 14:09people living, but first the dead in Christ will rise and be
- 14:13given bodies. And those those who were against
- 14:18Christ will not rise for this 1000 period of 1000 years of
- 14:25time. They, those who rejected Christ
- 14:28will not rise. They will rise at the end of
- 14:31that 1000 years for final judgement.
- 14:35But I guess I don't remember where I was going with this, but
- 14:40oh, about David. And so either way, if he, he's
- 14:45already with God, you know, perhaps that could be, or if he
- 14:49rises up when Jesus returns, I think when you read Ezekiel that
- 14:55David is actually going to be the king and then Jesus will be,
- 15:00he will be the Prince. David will be the Prince and
- 15:02then the king. I, I'm just reading it that way.
- 15:05So I could be wrong on that. That's an interpretation.
- 15:08But I think it's Ezekiel. I don't know if it's 30.
- 15:12No, it's not 38, but it's, it's the last chapters of Ezekiel
- 15:16where it talks about the third temple.
- 15:18And anyway, it'll be interesting, but this talks
- 15:22about they will return and seek the Lord the God and David their
- 15:26king. And so I'm wondering if, you
- 15:29know, they if this, I wonder if this return is actually during
- 15:32the Millennium when David is already risen.
- 15:35And then they hear about this and they're like, oh, let's go
- 15:37see the Lord. They will come trembling to the
- 15:40Lord and to his blessings in the last days.
- 15:44That would make sense that that would be the circumstances.
- 15:47Now I'm now I'm going to read what the study Bible says about
- 15:50this. Okay, chapter 3.
- 15:53Why was Hosea ordered to take back an unfaithful spouse?
- 15:58Hosea forgave Gomer's sin against him, symbolizing God's
- 16:03forgiveness of sinful Israel and demonstrating that severed
- 16:07relationships can be restored. We are to reflect the same
- 16:12steadfast love and forgiveness in our relationships.
- 16:16What were sacred Raisin cakes? These were food items used in
- 16:21the worship of Baal. The Israelites had turned to
- 16:25idolatry and were enjoying the sensuality of Pagan rituals.
- 16:32Why did Hosea have to buy back his wife?
- 16:36Gomer had apparently sold herself into prostitution,
- 16:41possibly with one of the Pagan sex that engaged prostitutes as
- 16:46a part of worship practices. Hosea brought her back, paying 6
- 16:50ounces of silver, about the about half the cost of a slave,
- 16:56plus nearly 10 bushels of barley.
- 17:01What does this prediction refer to?
- 17:04This prediction there are This predicts the eventual
- 17:08destruction of Israel, which occurred in 722 BC.
- 17:12The Assyrians under Shalmaneser invaded the land and laid siege
- 17:18to Samaria, finally capturing the city and carrying its
- 17:22residents off to exile in in Assyria.
- 17:26You can find that in Second Kings chapter 17 verses 3
- 17:29through 6. OK, so we covered chapter 3.
- 17:32Now we'll go into it was very short chapter.
- 17:34Now we'll go into chapter 4. The charge against Israel.
- 17:38Hear the word of the Lord, you Israelites, because the Lord has
- 17:41a charge to bring against you who live in the land.
- 17:45There is no faithfulness, no love, no acknowledgement of God
- 17:52in the land. There is only cursing, lying and
- 17:56murder, stealing and adultery. They break all bounds.
- 18:01With bloodshed follows bloodshed.
- 18:04Because of this, the land dries up, and all who live in it waste
- 18:10away. The beasts of the field, the
- 18:13birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea are swept away.
- 18:17But let no one bring a charge, let no one accuse another.
- 18:22For your people are like those who bring charges against a
- 18:26priest. You stumble day and night, and
- 18:29the prophets stumble with you. So I will destroy your mother.
- 18:34My people are destroyed from a lack of knowledge.
- 18:39Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as
- 18:44my priest. Because you have ignored the law
- 18:48of your God, I will ignore your children.
- 18:52The more priests there were, the more they sinned against Me.
- 18:56They exchange their glorious God for something disgraceful.
- 19:02They feed on the sins of My people and relish their
- 19:05wickedness. And it will be like people like
- 19:10priest. I will punish both of them for
- 19:13their ways and repay them for their deeds.
- 19:16They will eat but not have enough.
- 19:19They will engage in prostitution but not flourish because they
- 19:23have deserted the Lord to give themselves to prostitution.
- 19:27Old wine and new wine take away their understanding.
- 19:32My people consult a wooden idol and a diviner's rod speaks to
- 19:38them. A spirit of prostitution leads
- 19:42them astray. They are unfaithful to their
- 19:46God. They sacrifice on mountain tops
- 19:49and burn offerings on the hills under oak, Poplar and terebinth
- 19:53where the shade is pleasant. Therefore, your daughters turn
- 19:57to prostitution and your daughter in laws to adultery.
- 20:03I will not punish your daughters when they turn to prostitution.
- 20:09That's interesting. So see how God turns people over
- 20:13to their desires. Nor your daughters in law when
- 20:18they commit adultery. Because the men themselves
- 20:21consort with harlots and sacrifice with shrine
- 20:26prostitutes. A people without understanding
- 20:29will come to ruin. Though you, Israel, commit
- 20:33adultery. Do not let Judah become guilty.
- 20:37Do not go to Gilgal, do not go up to Beth Haven, and do not
- 20:40swear. As surely as the Lord lives.
- 20:43The Israelites are stubborn, like a stubborn heifer.
- 20:47How then can the Lord pasture them like lambs in a Meadow?
- 20:52Ephraim is joined to idols. Leave him alone.
- 20:57Even when their drinks are gone, they continue their
- 21:00prostitution. Their rulers dearly love
- 21:03shameful ways. A whirlwind will sweep them
- 21:07away, and their sacrifices will bring them shame.
- 21:11That's the end of chapter 4. I'll read the questions and
- 21:14answers for that one too. I guess the things that stood
- 21:20out to me in these scriptures were, you know, God gives the
- 21:26reasons for all the things that they've done and they have
- 21:31effects on crops, on the land drying up.
- 21:36It's because of all the sin that these things happen.
- 21:40And then I thought it was interesting because verse 12
- 21:45talks about a spirit of prostitution leads them astray.
- 21:49And we've talked about how spirits are things that we do
- 21:53not see, but they do influence us.
- 21:56And I do think that, you know, a lot of this talks about also new
- 22:01wine and drinking wine and everything.
- 22:04And then there's the verse in Scripture that says be alert and
- 22:07of sober mind because the devil prowls looking for his next
- 22:11victim. So there's evil that is seeking
- 22:16a weak mind, a weakened mind that's not alert so that they
- 22:22can they can cause havoc, ultimately destroy a person.
- 22:28And, and again, this is where that spiritual side of things
- 22:32isn't always talked about, but it's something I think very
- 22:36important that we should know it exists.
- 22:41So OK, I will read the questions and answers now.
- 22:44What was wrong with bringing a charge against the priest?
- 22:48Hosea was accusing the people of blaming the priest without
- 22:51accepting responsibility for their own sins.
- 22:54Their lack of respect for the priesthood was also an
- 22:57expression of their rebellion against God's authority.
- 23:01God, however, levelled charges against the priest because they
- 23:05were also guilty of ignoring His law.
- 23:08How are people destroyed from a lack of knowledge?
- 23:11This is referring not to a lack of knowledge in general, but to
- 23:14the Israelites. Failure to to know that is to
- 23:19take to heart and follow the law of their God.
- 23:23Without the guidance of God's law, people lose their way, they
- 23:27stumble, and they go astray. Israel would end up a sinful
- 23:31nation, estranged from God. How did priests feed on the sins
- 23:37of the people? Tragically, the false priest and
- 23:40prophets of Hosea's day catered to the people's idolatrous
- 23:44distress, given giving in to their wishes rather than
- 23:50deferring to God's wishes. By doing so, the priest feed on
- 23:55or fed on the sins of the people rather than on the way and the
- 24:00Word of the Lord. They forsook their duty to
- 24:04mediate between the people and the living God.
- 24:08What was the you know, that's when I read that I think about
- 24:12pastors pre, you know, that should be taking the knowledge
- 24:17they have. They should be in the Bible and
- 24:20know the Bible very well and should be advising people.
- 24:25But so often you see these where they've turned leaders of
- 24:30churches have turned to idolatry because they are basically
- 24:35worshipping money. They're in it for the money and
- 24:39they are not. The way Jesus talks about it,
- 24:43God talks about it, feeding my people, his people, God's people
- 24:47and with the word of God. And they're not telling the
- 24:51truth. They are appeasing them, making
- 24:54them comfortable in their own sin.
- 24:56They're abusing the word of grace and letting people think
- 25:01that you're fine, you know, just come to church, just tithe, just
- 25:06pay, you know, you're all good. God's love, God has grace.
- 25:10That's the message that a lot of churches give.
- 25:13And and then it's all about like, you know, all of these
- 25:18blessings and abundance and wealth and those kinds of
- 25:23messages that seem to be very popular with people because
- 25:26people are sinful. People desire those things.
- 25:30And so they look for that kind of stuff, the stuff that makes
- 25:33me feel good. I don't want to hear the stuff.
- 25:35Just like, I think it was Ahab who is very sinful.
- 25:39And it doesn't sound like he actually got saved.
- 25:43Sounds like he got destroyed. I don't know if he ever turned
- 25:45to God. We won't know until the very
- 25:48end, though, because God always, you know, he has mercy.
- 25:51He could do whatever he wants to do about someone's salvation.
- 25:55But he was Ahab was a king of Israel and his wife was Jezebel.
- 26:00And I forgot the point I was going to make on that, except
- 26:04that, Oh yeah, they, it was about the prophets.
- 26:07And they were like killing off the Lord's prophets.
- 26:10And and they also when they were going to go to war against
- 26:16something against someone and the king of Judah came to talk
- 26:21to, I think it was Ahab. And he said, don't you have any
- 26:25real, Don't you have any other prophets?
- 26:27Because all of these prophets were ones that probably worship
- 26:32Baal and all that, you know, the false gods.
- 26:35And they were all saying, yeah, you're going to be successful in
- 26:38this war. And the king of Judah, for some
- 26:43reason, he must have had discernment.
- 26:45He was saying, isn't there anyone else?
- 26:47And then Ahab said, oh, yeah, there's this one guy, but I
- 26:50don't like him because he never has anything good to say.
- 26:55And that's exactly what happens today too, is that the messages
- 27:00in some churches, not all, but a lot of churches seem to be
- 27:04geared towards making people feel good and happy and
- 27:10cheerful. But are they doing a disservice
- 27:13to the people? Are they preparing people for
- 27:16God's Kingdom? Are they preparing people for
- 27:19the return of Jesus? If Jesus returned today, would
- 27:23those people be prepared? Could they have said something
- 27:26else in their messages that would have made people more
- 27:30serious about the way lives are being lived and about
- 27:34surrendering and receiving the Holy Spirit?
- 27:38Is that the kind of message that churches are given?
- 27:40If you don't have a church that's talking to you about
- 27:43repentance and about the power of the Holy Spirit, which I
- 27:47believe is what grace is, grace is the power of the Holy Spirit
- 27:52that is given to us as a gift. And that's what I believe grace
- 27:56is. And that's why we are saved by
- 27:59grace, not of our own, because it's the Holy Spirit who changes
- 28:03us. So if people, churches, whatever
- 28:07are not talking to you about repentance or about the Holy
- 28:11Spirit, you're really missing out because those are really
- 28:15important things that Jesus talked about.
- 28:19Now obviously God doesn't just want us to, I don't know, he he
- 28:25wants us to have our hearts torn, to turned, turned to him
- 28:29in repentance, to reject sin, to like the things that he likes
- 28:34and dislike the things like to be in alignment with him.
- 28:38I mean, who wants to be close to someone that disagrees with
- 28:41everything that you believe or hold in high regard?
- 28:46So God through the Bible tells us what things are really
- 28:49important to him. And then we have to make the
- 28:52decision. Do we agree with God?
- 28:54Do we, I mean, God's right, but do we want to accept what God
- 28:59has to say about that? What is good, what is bad, what
- 29:03is right, what is wrong? And are we willing to, you know,
- 29:08to say, OK, maybe I don't feel that way, but you, your way is
- 29:13right. And I'm going to submit to that
- 29:17because you are the Creator, you are the king.
- 29:21And the other thing that God does is he gives us the Holy
- 29:25Spirit as a gift to help us to change so that our desires
- 29:30become more in alignment with his.
- 29:32Like he can have a relationship with us that we like the same
- 29:37things that he likes. And that happens over time with
- 29:40people. And it's through the power of
- 29:42the Holy Spirit. But God gives us free will will,
- 29:45so he's not going to force that on us.
- 29:47So we have to make that known to God that we want him to do that
- 29:51with us, that our free will is saying, yes, God, do that with
- 29:54me. And that's really important
- 29:58information from the Bible that needs to be expressed to people.
- 30:08OK, so let's see, what was the difference between old wine and
- 30:13new wine? Some believe that new wine was
- 30:17wine not yet fermented. Others think it's simply
- 30:20referred to wine not fully aged but still intoxicating since it
- 30:25would take away their understanding.
- 30:28Hosea's point may have been that those addicted to wine were
- 30:34impatient and drank the wine before its time, or he may have
- 30:39meant that they did not bother to discriminate between fine and
- 30:44poor wine. How did men sacrifice with
- 30:49shrine prostitutes? Many Pagan religions were
- 30:52heavily subsidized by proceeds from prostitution.
- 30:57Shrine prostitutes were purchased as religious right in
- 31:02various temples and ceremonies of the culture surrounding
- 31:05Israel. A sacrifice was normally offered
- 31:09for the right to have sexual intercourse with a prostitute.
- 31:13These sexual acts were committed under the thin veneer of
- 31:17imitating the gods through dramas.
- 31:21Shrine prostitutes were also used in fertility rites to
- 31:26symbolically express gratitude for the changing of the seasons
- 31:30or to request bountiful crops. What was the spirit of
- 31:35prostitution? This will be interesting 'cause
- 31:38I didn't read this first. This is a figurative way to
- 31:41describe Israeli unfaithfulness to God.
- 31:44The Hebrew language uses words like spirit to describe a
- 31:48persons inner characteristics or disposition.
- 31:52Israel's tendency was to commit spiritual prostitution.
- 31:56That is, she was unfaithful to God and chased after other gods
- 32:01just as a prostitute solicits customers.
- 32:05Such a description was a doubly appropriate appropriate since
- 32:10the worship of foreign gods frequently involved literal
- 32:13prostitution. That's another example of how we
- 32:18see throughout the Scripture that God uses literal events as
- 32:24symbolic, you know, symbolically as well, I guess, like a
- 32:26metaphor. So the ancient Israelites were
- 32:30not not the only people to become involved in a spirit of
- 32:35prostitution. Today, people are also tempted
- 32:39to be unfaithful toward God by abandoning their commitment to
- 32:43Him. Whenever people adopt the ways
- 32:46of the culture around them, engaging in its pleasures and
- 32:50forms of instant gratification, we see a spirit of prostitution.
- 32:56Those who are disobedient to God are guilty of spiritual
- 33:01adultery. What did Hosea mean by Judah not
- 33:08becoming guilty? He was using the example of the
- 33:11northern Kingdom Israel to warn the southern Kingdom Judah.
- 33:16Hosea, probably worried, probably wrote down the warnings
- 33:21he had given Israel shortly after it fell to Assyria.
- 33:26His hope was that Judah, in seeing Israel's judgement, would
- 33:31avoid the guilt and consequences of turning away from God.
- 33:35Judah, however, encountered its own problems with idolatry and
- 33:40only survived Israel by 136 years.
- 33:45So both fell and disappointed God.
- 33:50There's another. There's more in Bible prophecy
- 33:53about that as well, but we have now done chapters 2-3 and four,
- 33:59so we'll pick it up next time at chapter 5.
