- 0:00Speaker 1: And David said unto all his servants that were with
- 0:03Speaker 1: him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee, for we
- 0:07Speaker 1: shall not else escape from Absalom. Make speed to depart,
- 0:11Speaker 1: lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us,
- 0:15Speaker 1: and smite the city with the edge of the sword.
- 0:17Speaker 1: 2 Samuel 15.14 Father, when others come for my position
- 0:27Speaker 1: and influence, like Absalom, I will not worry or be dismayed. Instead,
- 0:33Speaker 1: I will take David's lead in 2 Samuel 17, 17
- 0:38Speaker 1: and remember a very vital truth, that what's for me
- 0:42Speaker 1: is for me. Because this truth is my reality, it
- 0:46Speaker 1: gives me the advantage because I know that your hand
- 0:50Speaker 1: is on me and for me. Therefore, when people plot
- 0:54Speaker 1: against me, they are actually going against you and your
- 0:58Speaker 1: sovereign plans for my life. No matter what my current
- 1:02Speaker 1: position is, everything will turn around and work out for
- 1:06Speaker 1: my good. Titles and accolades don't deter me from declaring
- 1:11Speaker 1: my destined future. I will continue to boldly prophesy and
- 1:16Speaker 1: speak life over my family, finances, and future. Because you
- 1:22Speaker 1: have already co-signed on me and everything that you have
- 1:26Speaker 1: prepared for my life long before I took my first breath.
- 1:32Speaker 1: What is mine is mine. And I thank you, God,
- 1:35Speaker 1: that you will see to it that it comes to
- 1:38Speaker 1: me under your grace in a perfect way. In Jesus' name, amen.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Listening to these daily prayers strengthens your relationship with God.

- 2:09Speaker 2: Absalom comes for the throne. In our last story, Joab
- 2:15Speaker 2: convinced David to allow his son Absalom to return from exile.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Absalom returned, not as a reformed or changed man, but
- 2:25Speaker 2: more bitter than ever. Absalom displayed evil tendencies by burning
- 2:31Speaker 2: Joab's fields and is reunited with David. Now we witness
- 2:35Speaker 2: the true heart of Absalom. as he dethrones his father
- 2:39Speaker 2: and sends David into the wilderness. David, fleeing from his
- 2:44Speaker 2: life again, is met with true loneliness and comforted by
- 2:47Speaker 2: the Spirit of God, as inspired by the book of
- 2:51Speaker 2: 2 Samuel.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Jack Graham with today's episode of the Bible
- 2:57Speaker 3: in a Year podcast. But before we begin, I want
- 3:01Speaker 3: to let you know about a unique e-book that's yours
- 3:04Speaker 3: to download absolutely free today. It's called Breaking Free from Stress.
- 3:10Speaker 3: And my prayer is that it will help you conquer
- 3:12Speaker 3: the daily tasks and pressures and burdens that bring stress
- 3:15Speaker 3: in your life. Download your free copy of Breaking Free
- 3:19Speaker 3: from Stress today by visiting jackgram.org slash stress. That's jackgram.org
- 3:26Speaker 3: slash stress. In yesterday's episode, we heard how Joab convinced
- 3:32Speaker 3: David to allow Absalom to return to Israel. David eventually
- 3:36Speaker 3: allowed his banished son to return but did not welcome
- 3:40Speaker 3: him with open arms. Instead, Absalom lived for two years
- 3:44Speaker 3: without speaking to his father. In that time, his anger
- 3:48Speaker 3: and bitterness only grew stronger and stronger. When David finally
- 3:52Speaker 3: reconnected with his son, the damage was done and evil
- 3:55Speaker 3: had filled Absalom's heart. He was determined to kill his
- 3:59Speaker 3: own father and take the throne. Today, We'll learn how
- 4:03Speaker 3: he overthrows King David and sends his father into exile
- 4:07Speaker 3: into the wilderness. David will once again taste the bitterness
- 4:11Speaker 3: of separation from his home and the fear of being
- 4:14Speaker 3: hunted by another man. But even as he flees for
- 4:17Speaker 3: his life, God will remain faithful to him and comfort
- 4:21Speaker 3: him in his loneliness and grief. So, let's listen now
- 4:25Speaker 3: to today's reading.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Ambition, Greed, and Revenge Thoughts of sitting on the throne
- 4:34Speaker 2: consumed Absalom into the night. Back and forth he would
- 4:37Speaker 2: pace the halls of his home, plotting how he might
- 4:40Speaker 2: seize the title of king from his father. Slowly and
- 4:44Speaker 2: methodically he began to take action against David. It began
- 4:48Speaker 2: with a few purchases. Absalom acquired a few chariots and
- 4:51Speaker 2: horses and added them to his collection. Later he hired
- 4:56Speaker 2: men to ride them. Yet he did not storm the
- 4:58Speaker 2: city of Jerusalem and take his father's throne by force.
- 5:02Speaker 1: No.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Absalom knew he needed the love and favor of the people.
- 5:07Speaker 2: So Absalom would rise early in the morning to stand
- 5:10Speaker 2: at the gates of Jerusalem. When men and women in
- 5:13Speaker 2: need would come to visit the king, Absalom would comfort them.
- 5:17Speaker 2: He would spin lies and tales about David's ineptitude and weariness.
- 5:22Speaker 2: You have so many needs. You are right to seek
- 5:25Speaker 2: counsel from the king, Absalom.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Would tell them.
- 5:28Speaker 2: It is a shame he has no time or appointed
- 5:30Speaker 2: people to hear your cries. If only I were set
- 5:34Speaker 2: as king over the land, every man and woman would
- 5:37Speaker 2: be loved and listened to. Absalom did this often, and
- 5:41Speaker 2: day by day people began to adore him. Absalom was violent, spiteful,
- 5:48Speaker 2: and filled with pride. However, he was a patient man.
- 5:52Speaker 2: For four years he stood at the gates and sowed
- 5:55Speaker 2: discord among the people. For four years he planted seeds
- 5:59Speaker 2: of doubt and bitterness towards the king. For four years,
- 6:04Speaker 2: Absalom slowly built a small army able to overtake Jerusalem.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Absalom traveled to Hebron, far away from the city of Jerusalem,
- 6:13Speaker 2: and hired men and women to spread rumors that Absalom
- 6:16Speaker 2: had been named the new king over Israel. It was
- 6:19Speaker 2: only a matter of time before Absalom could make his
- 6:22Speaker 2: final push for the throne and life of David. The
- 6:26Speaker 2: streets began to rumble. Hushed whispers soon became chants as
- 6:30Speaker 2: the people of Israel called for Absalom to be king.
- 6:33Speaker 2: It was music to Absalom's ears. A sly smile came
- 6:38Speaker 2: across his face. It was time. Absalom gathered his men
- 6:42Speaker 2: and began parading through the streets of Jerusalem. He postured himself,
- 6:47Speaker 2: sending a clear message to David. The message was received.
- 6:52Speaker 2: David and his servants knew that Absalom would come for
- 6:55Speaker 2: David's life. David would not allow the city of Jerusalem
- 6:59Speaker 2: to become a battleground. He would not risk the lives
- 7:02Speaker 2: of innocent people in a civil war. He gathered his
- 7:05Speaker 2: things and fled through the back of the palace. David
- 7:09Speaker 2: ran towards the wilderness when he saw dozens of people
- 7:12Speaker 2: waiting on the outskirts of the gates. David marveled as
- 7:16Speaker 2: a gathering of different tribes stood there. Foreigners that David
- 7:19Speaker 2: had welcomed in, David's personal bodyguard and mighty men, and
- 7:23Speaker 2: the priests with the Ark of the Covenant stood there,
- 7:26Speaker 2: ready to die if it meant following David. You should leave.
- 7:31Speaker 2: It may mean death for you all, David said, doing
- 7:35Speaker 2: his best to hold back tears. Wherever you are, whether
- 7:39Speaker 2: in death or in life, we will be as well,
- 7:42Speaker 2: they said. David was overwhelmed by their faithfulness, so they
- 7:47Speaker 2: ventured forth across the brook of Kidron towards the Mount
- 7:51Speaker 2: of Olives. The trees swayed back and forth as the
- 7:54Speaker 2: sun began to set. The people behind David began to
- 7:58Speaker 2: set up camp, But David went ahead to kneel before God.
- 8:02Speaker 2: There in the coolness of the night, David wept before
- 8:06Speaker 2: his Lord. He prayed earnestly and painfully. The air was
- 8:11Speaker 2: crisp and the stars were visible in between the trees.
- 8:14Speaker 2: It was in this very place on the Mount of
- 8:17Speaker 2: Olives that one of David's descendants would pray to God
- 8:20Speaker 2: as well. He would pray earnestly and painfully. Then he
- 8:24Speaker 2: would cross the brook towards his enemies and be crucified.
- 8:29Speaker 2: David and his people ventured a little further into the wilderness.
- 8:33Speaker 2: As they passed through the countryside, they were met with
- 8:36Speaker 2: kindness and curses. Some remembered the courageous and compassionate leadership
- 8:41Speaker 2: of David and helped him. Others were loyal to Absalom
- 8:45Speaker 2: and threw rocks, sticks, and curses toward them. It was
- 8:49Speaker 2: a humbling season for David. He longed to lead his
- 8:52Speaker 2: people again. He longed to see his family again. He
- 8:56Speaker 2: longed to see the Lord unleash his justice. Meanwhile, back
- 9:01Speaker 2: in Jerusalem, Absalom sat upon the throne. He gave out
- 9:05Speaker 2: a deep sigh of contentment and laughed. It had been
- 9:08Speaker 2: a long and drawn-out plan, but it was worth it.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Absalom was finally king over Israel, although David was still alive.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Absalom set up a tent on the roof of the
- 9:20Speaker 2: palace and slept with all his father's servants. He began
- 9:24Speaker 2: his hostile and lustful takeover of Israel. Absalom called Ahithophel
- 9:30Speaker 2: and Hushai to his side. The two were once counselors
- 9:33Speaker 2: to David, and now Absalom sought their advice. What should
- 9:37Speaker 2: be our plan of attack for David?
- 9:39Speaker 1: He asked.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Ahithophel was a weak man. His loyalty was not to
- 9:44Speaker 2: David or to Absalom, but to whoever would provide for
- 9:47Speaker 2: him and keep him safe. Ahithophel rubbed his hands together
- 9:51Speaker 2: and said, You ought to choose twelve thousand men and
- 9:55Speaker 2: pursue David tonight. Do not give him time to regain
- 9:58Speaker 2: his strength. You should move now. while he is discouraged.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Absalom enjoyed the advice and began to make arrangements. He
- 10:07Speaker 2: called Hushai and asked him the same question. Hushai was
- 10:11Speaker 2: a strong man and dedicated to God and David. He
- 10:14Speaker 2: spoke to Absalom as a loyal servant, although his true
- 10:18Speaker 2: allegiance was to David. Your father is no fool, Hushai said.
- 10:23Speaker 2: You forget that he and his men are mighty warriors.
- 10:26Speaker 2: You would not be able to ambush him so easily.
- 10:29Speaker 2: In fact, you may not be able to find him
- 10:31Speaker 2: at all. I think you should hold a rally with
- 10:35Speaker 2: the people of Israel. Gather them all together and motivate them. Then,
- 10:39Speaker 2: with their cheers and support behind you, you should ride
- 10:43Speaker 2: into battle against David. For if you are the true king,
- 10:46Speaker 2: you should be able to defeat David yourself. Hushai appealed
- 10:51Speaker 2: to Absalom's vanity. The rally would buy David more time
- 10:55Speaker 2: to prepare. Then, if Absalom rode into battle, it would
- 10:59Speaker 2: give David the opportunity to get rid of the problem himself.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Absalom agreed, and Hushai secretly sent word to David. When
- 11:08Speaker 2: Absalom prepared his rally, David prepared his people. He fed them,
- 11:13Speaker 2: clothed them, and tended to them as a shepherd would
- 11:16Speaker 2: his sheep. David knew something that Absalom did not. The
- 11:20Speaker 2: anointing of God is what makes a man king. No title,
- 11:24Speaker 2: no army, and no influence would ever replace the hand
- 11:27Speaker 2: of God upon David. He had learned this when facing Goliath.
- 11:32Speaker 2: He learned it facing the Philistines, and he learned it
- 11:35Speaker 2: in the wilderness fleeing from Saul. Nothing and no one
- 11:39Speaker 2: would harm David, for the God of all heaven and
- 11:42Speaker 2: earth was with him. This was something Absalom would learn
- 11:46Speaker 2: soon enough.
- 11:51Speaker 3: Our passage begins with a bitter and hateful Absalom setting
- 11:54Speaker 3: in motion an evil plan to force David, his own father,
- 11:58Speaker 3: off the throne. We know that Absalom is willing to
- 12:01Speaker 3: wait for his time of vengeance. He waited two years
- 12:05Speaker 3: to exact revenge on his brother Amnon, and this time
- 12:09Speaker 3: he will do the same. He waits. He begins to
- 12:13Speaker 3: amass horses and chariots and men to ride with him
- 12:16Speaker 3: when the time was right. But before he could make
- 12:19Speaker 3: his move, Absalom knew he needed to weaken the foundations
- 12:23Speaker 3: of David's rule, and so, like the serpent in the
- 12:26Speaker 3: Garden of Eden, Absalom began to whisper lies, questioning the
- 12:30Speaker 3: goodness of the king. Day after day, he would meet
- 12:33Speaker 3: people who came to see the king, and he would
- 12:36Speaker 3: fill their heads with lies, seducing the people into believing him,
- 12:40Speaker 3: eroding their loyalty to David and his rule. For four years,
- 12:45Speaker 3: he worked to undermine the king, all the while building
- 12:49Speaker 3: his own army. But he didn't stop with the lies
- 12:53Speaker 3: in Jerusalem. He spread rumors and false tales across the land,
- 12:57Speaker 3: leading people to believe that he was already king of Israel.
- 13:01Speaker 3: In time, Absalom was ready to strike. David saw the
- 13:05Speaker 3: writing on the wall, and though he counted on loyal
- 13:08Speaker 3: and courageous men, he was not willing to turn the
- 13:10Speaker 3: city of God into a battleground or to put the
- 13:13Speaker 3: lives of his people in danger. It's been said that
- 13:16Speaker 3: it takes a bigger man to walk away from a
- 13:18Speaker 3: fight than to start one, and David demonstrates that he
- 13:21Speaker 3: is the bigger man. So he left the palace for
- 13:25Speaker 3: the wilderness. It was something that he had done when
- 13:27Speaker 3: Saul wanted to kill him, but this time he was
- 13:30Speaker 3: leaving the throne, his home, and the place where God's
- 13:33Speaker 3: temple was. But even in the wilderness, he knew that
- 13:37Speaker 3: he was not alone. God was with him as always,
- 13:40Speaker 3: but so were many faithful Israelites who believed in him,
- 13:43Speaker 3: along with priests who brought the Ark of the Covenant.
- 13:46Speaker 3: But David was not willing to see the Ark removed
- 13:48Speaker 3: from its rightful place in Jerusalem. He trusted God enough
- 13:52Speaker 3: to send it back to the city, knowing that if
- 13:55Speaker 3: it was God's will that he would return one day. Clearly,
- 13:59Speaker 3: this was a time of great challenge for David. He
- 14:02Speaker 3: is running for his life. His son is sitting on
- 14:05Speaker 3: the throne of Israel, an illegitimate king who was not
- 14:08Speaker 3: anointed or blessed by God. And it grieved David, as
- 14:13Speaker 3: did the fact that he was so far from the
- 14:15Speaker 3: place of worship, the temple, the symbol of God's presence,
- 14:18Speaker 3: and the place that he loved to worship his creator.
- 14:22Speaker 3: In 2 Samuel 16, verse 30, we get a sense
- 14:25Speaker 3: of David's sorrow and grief when we read, David went
- 14:29Speaker 3: up the ascent of the Mount of Olives, weeping as
- 14:31Speaker 3: he went, barefoot and with his head covered. And all
- 14:35Speaker 3: the people who were with him covered their heads, and
- 14:37Speaker 3: they went up, weeping as they went. Through this time,
- 14:42Speaker 3: God comforted David's heart and strengthened him. And from David's exile,
- 14:46Speaker 3: we have some of the most heartfelt and beautiful psalms,
- 14:50Speaker 3: poems that speak of David's longing to be in the
- 14:52Speaker 3: dwelling place of the Lord again. And even as David
- 14:57Speaker 3: endured loneliness and sadness, God was preparing the way for
- 15:01Speaker 3: his return. For as Absalom surrendered himself with advisors and
- 15:05Speaker 3: sought their counsel, his vanity kept him from seeing that
- 15:08Speaker 3: some in his midst were loyal to David and would
- 15:11Speaker 3: set the stage for Absalom's downfall. And we will hear
- 15:15Speaker 3: all about that the next time. Dear God, we thank
- 15:19Speaker 3: you that when we are lonely and broken or in
- 15:22Speaker 3: times when we are estranged from loved ones and friends,
- 15:26Speaker 3: when we are grieving, when we are hurting, that you
- 15:28Speaker 3: always comfort us. We know that we can seek you
- 15:32Speaker 3: and find you as you have promised. When we face
- 15:35Speaker 3: our trials and our struggles and our difficulties, when we
- 15:38Speaker 3: are betrayed by even people that we love, we pray
- 15:43Speaker 3: that your presence will always fill us with your grace
- 15:46Speaker 3: and peace. In the name of Jesus, who is the
- 15:49Speaker 3: Prince of Peace, amen. Thank you for listening to today's
- 15:54Speaker 3: Bible in a Year podcast. Before we go, I want
