- 0:00Dot com. Welcome to the Daily Quote, the
- 0:06podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:11I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to
- 0:14you by the Great News Podcast. Link is in the show notes.
- 0:19Today's quote comes from Kurt Vonnegut, American novelist,
- 0:23satirist, and one of the great literary voices of the 20th
- 0:27century. The quote is this.
- 0:33We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we
- 0:38pretend to be. Most people interpret this quote
- 0:41as a piece of motivational wisdom and encouragement to act
- 0:46as if you're already the person you want to become.
- 0:49And that is valid. There's real truth in it.
- 0:54The research on identity based behavior.
- 0:57The psychology of rural adoption.
- 0:59James Clear's voting metaphor that we spoke about on the
- 1:03previous episode. All of this points to the same
- 1:06direction. Pretend long enough,
- 1:08consistently enough, and that pretending becomes the being.
- 1:14But Vonnegut wasn't writing a motivational quote.
- 1:17He was writing a warning. Mother Knight tells the story of
- 1:21Howard Campbell, an American spy who infiltrates the Nazi
- 1:25propaganda machine, broadcasting vile ideology to 1,000,000 while
- 1:31secretly embedding coded messages for the Allied forces.
- 1:36He tells himself throughout that it doesn't matter what he says
- 1:40because he knows who he really is on the inside.
- 1:44The performance is just a performance.
- 1:47The pretending is just pretending.
- 1:51Except it isn't. Vonnegut's point is that the
- 1:55separation between how we act externally and who we really are
- 2:01is imaginary. Our character consists of our
- 2:05actions, and any other distinction is an illusion.
- 2:10Campbell becomes what he pretends to be, The costume
- 2:13fuses to the skin. The role becomes the man.
- 2:19This is the double edge of the quote, and also what makes it so
- 2:23much more interesting than a simple call to positive
- 2:26thinking. Yes, pretending to be
- 2:29disciplined eventually makes you disciplined.
- 2:32Pretending to be confident makes you confident eventually, and
- 2:36pretending to be generous makes you generous.
- 2:39The becoming is real, but so is the other direction.
- 2:44Pretending to be someone who cuts corners eventually makes
- 2:47you someone who cuts corners. Pretending that small
- 2:51dishonesties don't matter eventually makes you someone to
- 2:55whom they don't. Pretending to be indifferent to
- 2:58the people around you eventually makes you indifferent.
- 3:01The costume always fuses to the skin in the end, for better or
- 3:07for worse. Vonnegut's warning is simply
- 3:09this. The pretending is never neutral.
- 3:13It is always quietly becoming who you are.
- 3:17This quote makes me think carefully about what I'm
- 3:20pretending to be in small, daily moments nobody sees, because
- 3:25those are the ones that actually shaped the answer.
- 3:28Not the big public declarations of intent, but the quiet daily
- 3:33performance of who I'm choosing to be in the moments that feel
- 3:37too small to matter. Because Vonnegut is right.
- 3:42They all count. They're all becoming something.
- 3:45The question is whether I'm paying attention to what.
- 3:49So here's the question. What are you deliberately
- 3:52pretending to be that you want to grow into?
- 3:56Because keep going, the becoming is real and it's already
- 4:00happening. And what are you pretending?
- 4:03Doesn't matter that quietly, gradually is making you into
- 4:07someone you didn't choose to be, because the costume always fuses
- 4:12to the skin, that pretending always becomes the being.
- 4:17Vonnegut knew this. Howard Campbell learned it too
- 4:20late. We are what we pretend to be.
- 4:24Choose the pretending carefully. That's going to do it for today.
- 4:29I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 4:34tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 4:39with another daily quote.
