- 0:15and the evolution of tech in sales.

- 0:40Very excited for our topic today.
- 0:42I was I was at the marketing artificial intelligence
- 0:44conference last week in Cleveland.
- 0:46It was two days of discussion on the impact AI is already having on marketing
- 0:52in particular, which is just scratching the surface of what is to come.
- 0:56And inherently we started talking about some of the broader go
- 0:58to market motions as well.
- 1:00The impact on sales, marketing, customer success, account management.
- 1:04So very excited to have with us today, Matt Millen.
- 1:06He's the CEO of regie.Ai.
- 1:09Matt Millen: So first of all, Matt, thanks very much for
- 1:11taking the time joining us today.
- 1:13Great to be here with you, Matt.
- 1:14And great to see you again, my friend.
- 1:16Matt Heinz: Absolutely.
- 1:17Well, you have had a front seat to the evolution of technology and sales given
- 1:21your role at Outreach and elsewhere.
- 1:23So maybe start with a little bit of your background.
- 1:25Kind of where you've been, what you've seen.
- 1:26And let's talk about that evolution of how technology has
- 1:30supported enhanced, accelerated the sales function and impact.
- 1:35Matt Millen: Yeah.
- 1:35Maybe it goes back too far, Matt.
- 1:37I started in 1987.
- 1:40So this is before corporate email.
- 1:42This is before the internet and I've had a front row seat to the infusion
- 1:46of technology into the selling process.
- 1:49And what do you start to see is you start to see the
- 1:51problems that technology solves.
- 1:54You also start to see some of the problems technology creates.
- 1:57As you mentioned, I was at Outreach leading revenue there.
- 2:02And Matt, for the first time in my career at Outreach, content was a
- 2:06problem for the modern sales rep.
- 2:09And what I mean by that, a few things were happening at the same time.
- 2:12One, sales was getting reliant on these template email sequences to go out.
- 2:18So somebody had to figure out how to write them to drive engagement.
- 2:21And at the same time, personalization was slowing down because we templates.
- 2:28That's when we figured out there had to be a better way to engage
- 2:32our prospects and customers.
- 2:35Matt Heinz: Well, you've been a part of that for a long time.
- 2:37I remember spending a lot of time with you at Outreach.
- 2:40And now excited to see what you guys are doing here today.
- 2:42I love the idea of the problems that tech solves as well as
- 2:45the problems that tech creates.
- 2:46It could similarly be said for artificial intelligence as we start to grapple with
- 2:50what that means in sales and marketing.
- 2:54Obviously what I see it as a huge opportunity, very exciting.
- 2:57A lot of people are pretty scared about what AI is, what it's going to do.
- 3:01Talk a little bit about that.
- 3:02Let's talk about that up front and address some of those fears and how you
- 3:05are addressing and managing that with the work you do and with your customers.
- 3:09Matt Millen: Yeah, I think to give that context is like to look at the the
- 3:12evolution of selling, you know, at the earliest stage, most reps did everything.
- 3:18Most reps were full cycle.
- 3:20We didn't have any technology.
- 3:21You rely on habits and bias in terms of what to do.
- 3:25You know, 10 years ago, software automation came for sales.
- 3:30And this was like an amplification of activity.
- 3:32Good activity got amplified.
- 3:34Bad activity got amplified, but it allowed us to do more.
- 3:38And it also, from a team perspective, you started seeing role specialization
- 3:42and teams where you had teams like sales development reps, focusing on
- 3:46top of funnel, account executives, or closers, post sale and success.
- 3:51We started seeing that then all of this automation started
- 3:56giving us insights and data.
- 3:58So it wasn't just do more.
- 3:59We can start figuring out what was working and how can we get better.
- 4:04And now we're in a completely different world now in the new world is this we're
- 4:09going from simple automation and simple automation is really where the human
- 4:13makes the decision and the technology helps us execute, and that's the world
- 4:19of sales engagement as we know it.
- 4:21Or, you can have some automation in your CRM helping you here, but
- 4:25where we're going is AI automation.
- 4:28And the difference is like the machines are going to make the decisions.
- 4:32And humans will help execute the tasks and so the major shift is like, who
- 4:38can make the better decision based on the data very quickly and help guide
- 4:44us into optimizing the actions and the activities that we're taking to
- 4:49drive the results and the outcomes?
- 4:53Matt Heinz: I think that's a really important distinction between the
- 4:56jobs and the tasks, because at the same time, I hear some salespeople and
- 5:00even people throughout go to market marketing sales, other roles worry about
- 5:03what AI is and what it's going to do.
- 5:05They concurrently complain about some of the tedious, repetitious
- 5:09tasks that they're asked to do.
- 5:10And if you look at frontline salespeople like, Oh, we need you to prospect.
- 5:14We need you to create this email.
- 5:15We need you to mark all this in CRM, like all these things, the salespeople have
- 5:18complained about forever, rightly, right?
- 5:20Because this isn't an act of selling motion.
- 5:23Like this seems like this is a godsend.
- 5:25If we now have robots and machines that can take those tasks off of our plates and
- 5:30let our craftsmen, like our specialists who can master the art of sales and do
- 5:36what they do best with more of their time.
- 5:39Matt Millen: Yeah, I would agree.
- 5:40And you might also want to like deconstruct those tasks.
- 5:44So there's elements of those tasks that we can better leverage
- 5:48technology, better leverage AI.
- 5:49So think about personalizing an email for a moment.
- 5:53You know, you can't personalize without doing research and research takes time.
- 5:58So I would go out to Matt Heinz's linkedIn profile.
- 6:02I would look at your company website.
- 6:04I would search news on you.
- 6:06I check your Twitter feed.
- 6:07I have to open up multiple tabs, go to multiple places.
- 6:10And then I've got to extract something that's contextually
- 6:13relevant to why I want to reach out.
- 6:15And then I've got that daunting task of how do I take what I've learned about you,
- 6:20combine that with why I want to talk to you and compose an email worth reading
- 6:24that's going to get your attention.
- 6:26So the average rep that's going to take 17 to 22 minutes to do , with
- 6:31some pretty poor engagement.
- 6:34My product will do this in 37 seconds and the engagement is significantly higher.
- 6:41It can be depending on whose stats you're looking at it with 250 to much
- 6:47higher, you know, it's going to depend.
- 6:49But the point is.
- 6:50You're doing two things at the same time here, Matt.
- 6:52One is you're increasing your ability to drive productivity.
- 6:57So what used to take 17 minutes now takes 37 seconds.
- 7:01So you're doing more.
- 7:03And in most cases, you're doing better.
- 7:06Because the contextual nature of the email, how it's written using industry
- 7:10best practices is typically better constructed and designed to stand out
- 7:15in the mailbox and drive engagement.
- 7:18So we're going further faster with AI.
- 7:21That's what the net result is.
- 7:24So we don't want to be scared of this.
- 7:26What we want to figure out is how do we incorporate this into our workflow
- 7:31to allow us to go further faster?
- 7:33And that's available today, right now.
- 7:35Matt Heinz: It certainly is.
- 7:36Talking today on Sales Pipeline Radio with Matt Millen.
- 7:38He's the Co-Founder and President of regie.ai.
- 7:41To your point, what's available right now, I think it's just scratching the
- 7:44surface of what we're going to see if we have this conversation in a year.
- 7:47If by default ask AI to do whatever you're starting to do next, a lot of
- 7:50things it's not going to do, but if it can't do it today, put that question
- 7:53on a shelf and wait for chat GPT 4.
- 7:565, wait for Deep Mind from Google early next year.
- 7:58Like the capabilities are going to go crazy.
- 8:01I want to address this from a perspective of change management.
- 8:03Right.
- 8:04So we can talk all day long about prospecting lead response,
- 8:07mid funnel triggers, customer success, impact, all the things.
- 8:11We are asking sales reps to change their behavior.
- 8:14We did this when we asked them to use CRM.
- 8:15We did this when we asked them to start using outreach, new tools, new
- 8:19processes, changing my behavior, even if it is to my benefit, sometimes it
- 8:24starts with a response of trepidation.
- 8:27So how, from your experience, having done this so many times, how do you
- 8:31manage through the change management to get adoption of these new tools?
- 8:36Matt Millen: So, first of all, it's a very good question and
- 8:39it's for some teams more than others, it's a very real problem.
- 8:42Number one, you talk about like adoption, there's historically
- 8:45low adoption on your CRM.
- 8:47It's not easy to use.
- 8:47It's not fun to use.
- 8:48It's not naturally positioned in your workflow.
- 8:51It's something you have to go do.
- 8:54What Outreach and Sales Loft and others did was it supported your main workflow
- 8:59and it updated the CRM for you, right?
- 9:02So you sat on it for workflows.
- 9:04So one of the things that you see different engagement rates with
- 9:08different software, based on how naturally it sits in your workflow.
- 9:12So AI adoption can be hard or easy.
- 9:15Here's four things that we've done to drive engagement because,
- 9:19you know, you said, hey, run out to chat and do something.
- 9:21We don't think you should run out anywhere.
- 9:23So regie.ai is integrated with your sales engagement platform, your CRM,
- 9:27LinkedIn, LinkedIn navigator, your email inbox, wherever you as a sales rep are
- 9:33working, you don't have to go anywhere, regie's is right there as your co pilot.
- 9:37It's right there.
- 9:38Number two, it actually knows what you're doing.
- 9:41So it's going to serve up content relevant to the step.
- 9:44You don't have to go prompt it, tell it what you need, like regie intuitively
- 9:48knows what you need right where you are.
- 9:51Third, is the output then doesn't need any editing or trying
- 9:56to figure out what you got.
- 9:57It's sales ready content that you can just use.
- 10:00You can edit it, but you don't need to.
- 10:02And then fourth, like to support it, your manager needs visibility.
- 10:07Your manager needs to be able to coach you and manage you.
- 10:10So we provide a manager dashboard that shows all the personalization
- 10:14engagement and what's going on.
- 10:16So you, you got great content for your Monday morning sales meeting.
- 10:19You can coach your reps one on one.
- 10:21So first is you need a product that supports adoption.
- 10:25So it needs to be enterprise grade.
- 10:27It needs to understand.
- 10:29And then quite frankly, it needs to be three things.
- 10:32It needs to be easy.
- 10:34It needs to be fun.
- 10:37And it needs to work.
- 10:39It needs to do what the promise is.
- 10:41And that's how we think about it.
- 10:43So we sit in the workflow, and quite frankly, if the manager is saying, Matt, I
- 10:47need you to, personalize 17 emails a day, the average email takes you 20 minutes,
- 10:52there's no way and now you can do it.
- 10:55So, it's training.
- 10:56Now, there are situations where teams still don't want to adopt the technology.
- 11:03We've got the ability to basically do the personalization that the
- 11:08reps, whether they want to do it or not, we serve it up, and then we can
- 11:12just send them out automatically.
- 11:14So, we've got the ability now to be a co pilot with a rep
- 11:18or an autopilot for the rep.
- 11:20Matt Heinz: We tend to think about technology, especially frontline tech
- 11:23tools like this as primarily impacting your BDRs, your sales reps, your AEs.
- 11:27Can you talk about why this is so beneficial to sales managers, right?
- 11:31Not just in terms of sort of the visibility into what's happening, but
- 11:35one of the biggest complaints I hear from sales managers is they spend too
- 11:37much time in spreadsheets and reports and not enough time coaching, right?
- 11:42Not enough time provide serving as a coach to their reps into their teams.
- 11:46It seems to me that with the automation of more of these tasks, it allows
- 11:49the managers to do a better job of coaching performance and skill
- 11:54sets among their teams as well.
- 11:58Matt Millen: You're 100% right.
- 12:00The managers want to be better, better managers.
- 12:04They want to be better coaches.
- 12:06But I think managers have these fundamental challenges in sales.
- 12:10And I would say all of us do.
- 12:11Challenge number one, you want your reps to be busier.
- 12:14That means doing the right things more often.
- 12:17Number two, managers want more of their team winning.
- 12:21You want better participation, more reps actually contributing to the success.
- 12:25And three managers want to know what's going on.
- 12:28Those are the three things that most managers and sales are looking for.
- 12:32Be busier, hit your number and I need visibility so I know
- 12:35where to dive in and help you.
- 12:37And AI can help.
- 12:38AI can help the activity levels.
- 12:41Doing more of the right things quickly, by that more reps will ultimately be
- 12:47effective and successful in their role and better instrumentation of the process
- 12:53allows them to understand very quickly what's going well and what isn't so they
- 12:58know where to go in and where to be a great coach, where to be a great manager.
- 13:03Matt Heinz: I've been told that the role of the BDR is going extinct.
- 13:07The function of the BDR is becoming irrelevant in the sales process and
- 13:11that AI is going to take over that job and do it on behalf of humans-- GO!
- 13:18Matt Millen: So first of all, it's one of the best debates on LinkedIn.
- 13:22I think role specialization makes sense on certain sales cycles with
- 13:27certain products that have enough value to justify the way that they're
- 13:30creating that division of labor.
- 13:32Other sales cycles are maybe better tuned for a full cycle in the
- 13:36rapidity of the actual sales process.
- 13:38So I don't think there'll be one or the other.
- 13:40I think not one will dominate.
- 13:42It'll depend.
- 13:43That being said, AI can help regardless of how you've structured
- 13:48your team, how you've structured your buyer's experience with you.
- 13:54Matt Heinz: It's an interesting debate on LinkedIn and other places.
- 13:57I've had this discussion last week the marketing context and, separating
- 14:01the idea of sort of jobs and tasks.
- 14:03If you ask a marketer what they did in the 1960s, that would be a very
- 14:07different looking job than what they did 40 years later when the internet
- 14:09showed up, let alone what has been happening now, 20 plus years later.
- 14:12Right.
- 14:12I remember, my dad did marketing for caterpillar tractor.
- 14:15And I literally one day said, like, I can't imagine doing
- 14:18my job without a computer.
- 14:19How did you do your job?
- 14:20He said, there was no concept of a computer.
- 14:22We did it differently.
- 14:24The job and need and the role persists.
- 14:28And I think that we continue to see technology for years, right?
- 14:32Having an improving our ability has been giving us tools to do our job.
- 14:36But tools and tasks are different than the job at hand.
- 14:40Maybe someday robots are going to sell the robots, but we are social people
- 14:44that like talking to other humans.
- 14:45And I think that human touch that art, that craftsmanship that goes along
- 14:48with that, that can be enhanced with technology that can be supported and
- 14:52augmented with the right tools to let people do what people do best.
- 14:57I think other people respond to that well.
- 15:00Matt Millen: 100%.
- 15:01Matt Heinz: All right.
- 15:02Well that's about all the time we have today.
- 15:04Matt Millen, President of regie.ai.
- 15:05Thank you very much.
- 15:06It's great to see you again.
- 15:07Great to hear that you guys are doing well.
- 15:09Hi to Nina and the whole team over there.
- 15:11You guys have built a real dream team on your exec team as well.
- 15:13So glad to hear you're doing well and good to see you.
- 15:16Matt Millen: Cheers, my friend.
- 15:17Matt Heinz: Awesome.
- 15:17Thanks so much to Matt.
- 15:19Thank you to everyone for joining us today.
- 15:20We'll be back here next week, every week, 11:30 am Pacific.
- 15:24Thanks for watching.
- 15:24This has been another episode of Sales Pipeline Radio.
- 15:26Take care.
