- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle talk. Today we are finally out of, if
- 0:20you will, we're out of the thick of it for a little bit.
- 0:22And the past several episodes have been really chunky.
- 0:27And some of you have told me about that fact.
- 0:30And I'd say I'm sorry, but truth be told, I'm not sorry.
- 0:35Those are some of the most important passages in the New
- 0:40Testament as it relates to the local church.
- 0:43And so as I'm a pastor, that's that's my mission is to help
- 0:48people know, as we'll see today, how they ought to behave
- 0:52themselves in the family of God. And so today we are just going
- 0:57over 3 verses. This is First Timothy 3/14/15
- 1:01and 16. And so we're going to read
- 1:03through this. This is Paul writing to Timothy,
- 1:06and he says this in verse #14 I write these things to you,
- 1:11hoping to come to you soon. But if I should be delayed, I've
- 1:15written so that you will know how people ought to conduct
- 1:19themselves in God's household, which is the Church of the
- 1:23living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.
- 1:27And most certainly the mystery of godliness is great.
- 1:31He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated in the spirit, seen
- 1:36by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the
- 1:41world, taken up in glory. I love verse 16.
- 1:47I'm going to try and make a beeline best I can towards that
- 1:51end. So verse number 14, Paul goes,
- 1:53hey, I'm writing this stuff. I'm hoping to be there like
- 1:57reunited with you there in Ephesus super soon.
- 1:59He says, but if I am going to take a while to do so, he says,
- 2:04I've written so this book is so that you will know how people
- 2:09ought to conduct themselves in God's household.
- 2:14So he says the purpose of this letter of first Timothy is so
- 2:19people will know how to conduct themselves in the family of God.
- 2:25Many of us hopefully grew up in some families that had some
- 2:30house rules. There were things that we did.
- 2:33We were assigned chores. There was an expectation that we
- 2:37would treat our sisters in a certain way or our brothers in a
- 2:42specific way, that we'd have a certain amount of respect for
- 2:45Mom or for Dad. When they said to do something,
- 2:48we obey and we do it right away. Perhaps even, hey, if you get
- 2:53all your chores done, you can have this amount of play time,
- 2:56You get an allowance, you get, you know, whatever the case
- 2:59might have been. But having some boundaries,
- 3:03having some rules, having some ways in which your family
- 3:07operates is a good thing. And God has told us how we are
- 3:11to operate, how we're supposed to behave or conduct ourselves
- 3:14within His family. And that's a super, super
- 3:19important thing to remember within the local church, that we
- 3:21are not people that are gathered together for a program.
- 3:28If you know, right now I lead the the music at Tabernacle with
- 3:33a great team. But if the music switched up
- 3:37tomorrow, all of our, you know, vocalists all lost their vocal
- 3:41cords and, you know, all of our instrumentalists, you know, we
- 3:47all lost our hands. And so the only thing that we
- 3:50could do is play, you know, multi tracks or, you know, kind
- 3:54of the, the in its worst way people phrase it like, you know,
- 3:58karaoke tracks of the gospel. Or if all we could do is sing
- 4:02acapella, just sing with only our voices to the Lord.
- 4:06That should never be a reason for someone to leave the church
- 4:11that they go, oh man, I was here for the music.
- 4:15I preach at Tabernacle. But if a day ever comes when I
- 4:20am no longer the one that is preaching at Tabernacle, I would
- 4:25never want someone to go. Oh, well, I was here for Brian's
- 4:29preaching and so now I'm going to leave the church.
- 4:33Or in kind of, you know, worst case scenario, as I've heard
- 4:36through the years, you know, someone switches up the carpet.
- 4:41You know, they they pick blue carpet instead of red carpet.
- 4:46You know, a unspiritual ungodly person would go, I'm leaving the
- 4:50church over that. An ungodly person says some, you
- 4:54know, random aspect of this church has changed.
- 4:59And so therefore it's no longer the church for me.
- 5:01That is an ungodly and wicked way to behave.
- 5:04Why? Because the church is not Burger
- 5:06King. The church is not something that
- 5:08you put together the program that you most enjoy with all of
- 5:13your favorite like ministries and hobbies and that's the
- 5:16reason you attend a church. No, you are part of a local
- 5:20church because it is God's family and you do not abandon
- 5:26and leave your family. Now, if a church goes, hey, we
- 5:30don't believe this thing that the Bible says like the Bible
- 5:34says, you know, it's very much in the cultural zeitgeist right
- 5:38now. We believe, quote UN quote, love
- 5:41is love. And so it doesn't matter what
- 5:44the gender is because gender is just a social construct anyway.
- 5:49You can just be with whoever you want to be and that's totally
- 5:54fine. We would say from scripture, no.
- 5:57God has outlined literally from Genesis to Revelation what
- 6:01marriage looks like and it is male and female, one in one
- 6:06together for one life. And all throughout Scripture
- 6:10that is what it tells us. So if a quote UN quote church
- 6:13were to say, well, no, we we don't believe that that is not a
- 6:16church that is not a part of God's family because it's not
- 6:19defined by what God says. It's defined by what it wants to
- 6:24say or how it wants to be perceived in our world today.
- 6:30So because it's God's family and because we purport to be a part
- 6:36of God's family, we stick it out.
- 6:39And not only do we stick it out, but we love one another because
- 6:42that's what we are called to do. That's what we're supposed to
- 6:45do. We are the forgiven people.
- 6:47We're the adopted people. We are the loved and the chosen
- 6:51people. And so we ought to be those that
- 6:54love and adopt and choose and care for each other.
- 6:58And so I want to encourage you, don't be a selfish Burger King.
- 7:02Have it your way type Christian. Yeah, that that is a despicable,
- 7:08awful thing to to be and to do. Don't turn your back on the
- 7:13people of God over preferences and not over Jesus died so that
- 7:20I would be unified with you. And so I'm going to be unified
- 7:23with you. I'm going to care about you.
- 7:25I'm going to stick it out through thick and through thin.
- 7:27I'm going to do my part. I'm going to serve, I'm going to
- 7:29love, I'm going to give. I'm going to be involved because
- 7:33Jesus is the one that has put this family together.
- 7:36So he says, I've written this so that people will know how to
- 7:39conduct themselves in God's household.
- 7:41And just in case we're not clear of like, OK, well is that just
- 7:44like the family of God at large? He then specifically says, which
- 7:47is the Church of the living God. If you want to be a part of
- 7:51God's family, then you need to love and be a part of the local
- 7:56church. The church is the family of God.
- 7:59There is no such thing as a Christian without a church.
- 8:04Now, there may be a Christian who is not attending, who is not
- 8:09a part of a local assembly of believers, but that person is in
- 8:14danger, like their soul might be in danger if they're saying no.
- 8:18I, I hate that family because if you, you know, if you hate B or
- 8:23EV, if you hate Samantha, you aren't having a relationship
- 8:27with me. Like to love me means you love
- 8:31my family because they are what is most important to me.
- 8:34And we're told in Ephesians 5 that Jesus died for the church.
- 8:38He gave his life for her. And so we have a responsibility
- 8:42then as individual parts of the body of Christ to love the
- 8:47church, to love the family of God.
- 8:50And he even says the Church of the living God is the pillar and
- 8:54foundation of the truth. There was an individual I talked
- 8:59to several years ago who though they had served in various
- 9:04ministries over many years, they did not view church as
- 9:09important. They would not encourage others
- 9:13to be a part of the church. And they were shocked to hear me
- 9:18once quote this, that the church is the pillar and foundation of
- 9:22the truth. And so if we are going to build
- 9:24our lives on the truth of God's Word, then it means that we must
- 9:28have a love for the local church.
- 9:31Now you might be saying, all right, well, Brian, you're just
- 9:34saying that because you're the pastor of a local church.
- 9:36I don't care if you go to Tabernacle.
- 9:38There are so many wonderful, godly, amazing gospel preaching
- 9:42churches, even just in my little area of the world.
- 9:46And I'd be thrilled to death for you to sit and and sit under the
- 9:51preaching of some godly guys that I know.
- 9:54I think of Freedom Church, Hazelwood with some amazing
- 9:59pastors, Bethlehem Church with several of my friends over in
- 10:03Bowley's quarters, John Manry at Middle River Baptist.
- 10:08He's a good godly guy. Love, love him.
- 10:11And and the times that I've gotten to spend with him, so
- 10:15many faithful gospel preaching brothers all across my area.
- 10:21I just want you to be in church because it is the best thing.
- 10:24It is God's plan A and there is no Plan B.
- 10:28All right, Michael, all right, Brian, you were, you were pretty
- 10:31fired up. I know, I know, I know.
- 10:33Let's dive in now to verse 16. This is where I really wanted to
- 10:36get to says and most certainly talking about the pillar and
- 10:39foundation of the truth. He says most certainly the
- 10:43mystery of godliness is great. He, this is obviously Jesus, was
- 10:49manifested in the flesh, that Jesus was not always walking in
- 10:55and among us in flesh and blood like we have, but he came into
- 11:01time and space, into the virgin womb of Mary and God within
- 11:09Mary's womb. Through the power of the Holy
- 11:11Spirit, He conceived Christ and knit him together just as He
- 11:16knits every infant and he put together his arms and his
- 11:20fingers, His eyes. This God that saw all of
- 11:25creation, the one that had seen the galaxies and the stars, was
- 11:30now given eyes that would sit in darkness for a couple of months
- 11:34before he was born. He, the one that, as has God,
- 11:40hovered over the face of the waters in Genesis 1, was given
- 11:45legs that would one day walk on the waters.
- 11:49God crafted the hands that would be pierced with the nails he he
- 11:54made the side and the organs that would be pierced with the
- 11:58Roman spear. He made the head that would be
- 12:03crowned with thorns and the chin that would one day grow hairs
- 12:09with a beard that would be plucked out by the Roman
- 12:12soldiers. Jesus was manifest in the flesh.
- 12:16What a thought that God became man.
- 12:21It says he was manifested in the flesh.
- 12:22He was vindicated in the Spirit. You can think of Jesus as he's
- 12:26baptized by John the Baptizer, and as he's brought up out of
- 12:30the water, the Holy Spirit descends on him like a dove, if
- 12:35you will. It's the manner in which the
- 12:36Holy Spirit came down on him. It's not that there was a
- 12:39literal physical dove. The Holy Spirit isn't a dove,
- 12:42though he's often pictured because he's a spirit.
- 12:45That's like wind breath. We don't have a way to conceive
- 12:48of that and so Scripture gives us the picture of a dove.
- 12:51So Holy Spirit comes down like a dove on to him, if you will,
- 12:55anointing him. I'm putting that in quotes.
- 12:58Jesus was always the Son of God. He was always the Messiah.
- 13:01He was always the Christ. But in that moment in
- 13:05particular, as others saw, they went, oh man, the Holy Spirit
- 13:09has come on to this individual and the voice from heaven
- 13:12declares, this is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.
- 13:17So Jesus was manifested in the flesh.
- 13:19He was vindicated in the Spirit that the Spirit gave, if you
- 13:23will, the yes, this is a, this is the Christ.
- 13:27And so you should listen to him says he was seen by angels over
- 13:32and over again throughout Jesus's ministry.
- 13:35You have the angels showing up. So after Satan tempts him in the
- 13:38wilderness, the angels come and they minister to him.
- 13:41You can think of even on the mount of Transfiguration as
- 13:45Jesus is transformed, some of his glory shines out and there
- 13:48he sees Moses and he sees Elijah and he's conversing with them.
- 13:53And you can think about, you know, the angelic host that
- 13:58would no doubt have been around that spot as you have heaven and
- 14:02earth there overlapping that these Saints from the presence
- 14:07of God interacting with God the Son there.
- 14:11You can think about the Garden of Gethsemane where the angels
- 14:14ministered to Jesus spirit even as he was in deep anguish and
- 14:18crying out for God that the angels ministered to him all
- 14:22along the way. That's so cool to me because if
- 14:27the angels even helped God the Son while he was here on earth,
- 14:31then the angels can be helping me.
- 14:34The angels can be ministering to my soul when I'm going through
- 14:38grief or when I'm going through temptation or when I'm
- 14:40struggling with anxiety like God's angels can be right there
- 14:43around me. And what a joyous thought that
- 14:46that is that it happens because of the love of my Jesus.
- 14:50So Jesus, he was manifested in the flesh and vindicated in the
- 14:55Spirit. So if you will, the earth's side
- 14:57of things, the flesh, and the heavenly side of things, the
- 15:00Spirit, He was seen by angels. That's a, you know, kind of
- 15:04heavenly thing. And then it also says he was
- 15:06preached among the nations. So the kind of, if you will, the
- 15:10opposite of heaven's inhabitants, the angels, is the
- 15:14nations, which is the earth's inhabitants.
- 15:17And Jesus was preached among the nations that whether it was
- 15:22Israel or Egypt or Samaria or even in Rome, as he was declared
- 15:28at various times. And the Greeks that came and
- 15:31visited Jesus and the disciples even during right after that
- 15:36triumphal entry, that some of the Greeks wanted to converse
- 15:39with Jesus, that Jesus was preached among the nations.
- 15:43And then it says he was believed on in the world and taken up in
- 15:47glory, that Jesus is Lord of both heaven and earth.
- 15:51So he was manifested down here in the flesh.
- 15:54He was vindicated in the spirit from up there.
- 15:57He was seen by angels who inhabit the up there.
- 16:00He was preached among the nations which are down here and
- 16:03who inhabit down here. He was believed on in the world
- 16:07the down here and he was taken up in glory to the up there.
- 16:12So you can think again Genesis one in the beginning God created
- 16:16the heavens, the skies and the earth, the land.
- 16:19And so first Timothy 316 walks through all of that that Jesus
- 16:24is Lord of everything and so we ought to worship and follow and
- 16:30love him. That is the gospel message that
- 16:33we proclaim. The gospel message is not,
- 16:36here's all of the ways in which all of your problems can go
- 16:39away. The gospel message is not here's
- 16:42the superiority of men over women.
- 16:44The gospel message is not, here's the way that you can have
- 16:48the most financially prosperous nation or the most ethnically
- 16:53homogeneous nation, as I've seen some people despicably work to
- 16:58put together. None of those things are the
- 17:00gospel. The gospel is not how righteous
- 17:03are we. The gospel is the story of
- 17:04Jesus. The gospel is the Son of God was
- 17:07manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit.
- 17:11He was seen by angels. He was preached.
- 17:13He was preached among the world, among the nations that he was
- 17:18believed on in the world, and he was received up into glory.
- 17:22And so if you're looking for a great verse to memorize, First
- 17:25Timothy 316 is a short one. It's got all of those little
- 17:28parallels that you can learn, and it can help you to know the
- 17:31gospel message to be able to share it with others.
- 17:34Thank you for watching this episode today.
- 17:37Tomorrow we begin chapter 4 and looking forward to it with you.
