Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Overcoming Self-Doubt and Fear of Incapacity in the Spiritual Endeavour
Transcript
- 0:01Spiritual seekers throughout the ages have been confronted with
- 0:04internal anguish about whether they actually have the capacity
- 0:08and ability to succeed in their spiritual endeavour.
- 0:12They go through periods of enthusiasm and joy as they feel
- 0:16the spiritual force working in them bringing them insights,
- 0:20spiritual experiences and what appears to be progress.
- 0:25When these periods are abated for some time they may be
- 0:29subject to doubt, despair or depression as they feel they may
- 0:34be unfit. This oscillation between the two
- 0:39states is due to first of all ego attachment and vital seeking
- 0:44that creates a desire or ambition to succeed, sets
- 0:48parameters for what constitutes success and then reacts if these
- 0:53self defined objectives are not being met.
- 0:56The operation of the gunas rajas fueling the vital ambition and
- 1:01enthusiasm and Thomas the consequent falling back into
- 1:06doubt and despair drives these reactions in various places.
- 1:12Sri Aurobindo describes the transformation of consciousness
- 1:15as a dual action of ascent and integration.
- 1:19During the times of ascent, the experiences come and make
- 1:24themselves felt. During the times of integration,
- 1:28these experiences recede as the force works behind the scenes to
- 1:33modify the mind, the vital being, and the physical frame to
- 1:38hold and utilize it for the transformation.
- 1:43During the times of integration or assimilation, the surface
- 1:47being does not believe anything is being done as it cannot see
- 1:51or feel it. This is simply a mistaken
- 1:55impression. Sri Aurobindo therefore asserts
- 1:58that he who chooses the infinite has been chosen by the infinite,
- 2:04implying a divine sanction for the individual that comes from
- 2:08the spiritual plane and is not driven by the ego motivations of
- 2:13the individual. The work of transformation of
- 2:17human nature is not something to be done in a day, nor by
- 2:21individual effort. It is the process of the
- 2:24evolution of the next stage of consciousness, which necessarily
- 2:29has to work out a lot of obstructions, obstacles,
- 2:32resistances and distortions that exist in our present human
- 2:37nature. If the individual moves away
- 2:41from the ego standpoint to the divine standpoint, the need for
- 2:45internal self doubt disappears in a work that may take decades
- 2:51or centuries. Applying A judgement term based
- 2:54on an individual human life experience is bound to be
- 2:59inaccurate and misleading, Sriorbindo writes.
- 3:04Quote. The only truth in your other
- 3:07experience, which you say seems at the time so true to you, is
- 3:13that it is hopeless for you or anyone to get out of the
- 3:17inferior consciousness by your or his unaided effort.
- 3:22That is why when you sink into this inferior consciousness,
- 3:26everything seems hopeless to you, because you lose hold for a
- 3:30time of the true consciousness. But the suggestion is untrue,
- 3:35because you have an opening to the Divine and are not bound to
- 3:38remain in the inferior consciousness.
- 3:43When you are in the true consciousness, then you see that
- 3:46everything can be done, even if at present only a slight
- 3:49beginning has been made. But a beginning is enough once
- 3:54the Force, the Power are there. For the truth is that it can do
- 3:59everything and only time and the soul's aspiration are needed for
- 4:04the entire change and the soul's fulfilment.
