Latest / The Lunch Rush with Trent Condon / Can Miami upset Buffalo? Previewing Iowa/Rutgers, the Chicken Coop Contest, Lee Sterling's Weekly Picks & Bill Bender on College Football
Transcript
- 0:12Hi, good afternoon, Welcome to Miller and Condon.
- 0:16Happy NHL training camp opening day to all of those who
- 0:19celebrate what? Yes, it is time to get back on
- 0:23the ice. Trent Condon to lace them up.
- 0:25Let's go Miller and Condon with you for the next couple of hours
- 0:28talking sports but not hockey. I wouldn't do that to you on
- 0:31September the 18th. There'll be plenty of time for
- 0:34that in April, May and June. Coming up on our program, we
- 0:38will start with Lee Sterling. He is a handy capper when it
- 0:42comes to College in the NFL. For paramountsports.com, the
- 0:46company that he owns, Lee will give us a handful of games, how
- 0:50he sees them, and then his game of the week.
- 0:53And if you're so inclined, you can reach out For more
- 0:55information through the number he will provide for you or
- 0:59paramountsports.com. Certainly don't have to,
- 1:02obviously, but Lee will join us coming up here at 12:30.
- 1:06Then Bill Bender on the slate of college football games this
- 1:09week. A decent slate, not as good as
- 1:10next week, but a decent slate nonetheless.
- 1:14In our number 2, we're going to take a look at two of our
- 1:17regional NFL teams, the Green Bay Packers with Dave Sinican
- 1:21from KFAN up in the Twin Cities and zonecoverage.com.
- 1:26Dave hosts Packer Preview every Sunday morning year #30 of that
- 1:30program upon the Vikings flagship.
- 1:33And then we will talk to Dane Moussutani, who is the beat
- 1:37writer, one of the beat writers for the Minnesota Vikings, Saint
- 1:39Paul Pioneer Press, twincities.com for Dane.
- 1:42And then our regular 1:30 Thursday guest Stephen M Sipple
- 1:46from Husker Illustrated. Finally, the Huskers are going
- 1:49to dip their toe in the deeper college football waters and they
- 1:53will play Michigan. 2:30 That's ABC.
- 1:57And oh, by the way, if you can't be in front of your television
- 2:02and with the Hawks playing on Friday night, you're just
- 2:05driving around. Want to hear some college
- 2:06football on the radio? Westwood one has Michigan and
- 2:09Nebraska. Therefore, KXNO, the flagship of
- 2:13the Iowa Sports Radio Network, will carry that one getting
- 2:16underway at 2:30. So a decent slate of games
- 2:19college football wise, not the shiniest, maybe in the NFL.
- 2:23Monday night, I guess, would probably be the best game of the
- 2:26weekend with the Lions going to Baltimore potentially.
- 2:30Never know, we could see this game again the second Sunday in
- 2:33is it the second Sunday this year or the first whatever,
- 2:36early February? I'm not sure how the calendar
- 2:39falls this year, but we certainly could see that game
- 2:41again. There's a couple of other ones.
- 2:43Denver and the Chargers has got a pretty some cachet to it.
- 2:46Obviously the Rams and the Eagles.
- 2:48We saw this game last year in the playoffs and the Ram game
- 2:51gave the what soon to be known the world champion Philadelphia
- 2:55Eagles. I thought their best test.
- 2:56I'm not alone there. So couple of good games this
- 2:59weekend. Trent, How?
- 3:00Are you? I'm doing well starting Tuesday,
- 3:02Zero in on a lot of these games. Big 10 kind of takes center
- 3:05stage after the SEC had it a week ago.
- 3:07Big. Ten of the big twelves, a couple
- 3:09of big. 12 Big 12 is important with Utah and Texas Tech, 2
- 3:12teams we're trying to learn about.
- 3:13But I think a lot of people like Illinois, Indiana, no, this is
- 3:16not basketball. This is a football game.
- 3:19But it's big. This is.
- 3:20Absolutely monstrous. Nebraska, Michigan, I think
- 3:24falls right in that line. You know that group of four
- 3:26teams, All of them overall feel pretty good, right about.
- 3:30I'll give Arizona State Baylor a little love because potentially
- 3:33that could come into play late in the year and.
- 3:35Arizona State with that loss to Mississippi State, kind of what
- 3:38that does for the Big 12 as a whole, if they're going to be up
- 3:40there in contention and some ammunition for the Big 12 haters
- 3:43if it plays out in that fashion. So, yeah, big weekend.
- 3:47Yeah, you don't have those top flight games, but a lot of good
- 3:49games. And next week.
- 3:50Sometimes these are the weeks, though, that turned out to be
- 3:52even better. I couldn't agree with you more
- 3:54and it's going to turn out very well regardless for the good or
- 3:56not, because Iowa plays on Friday, Iowa State gets the
- 3:59weekend off. So go where you want and turn
- 4:01whatever channel you want on and don't have to feel guilty about
- 4:05missing a play or two with one of the needle movers, which in
- 4:07this business you really can't. Anyways, we'll get back to
- 4:10football in just a second. Just baseball from yesterday.
- 4:14Any takeaways from what you saw on the diamond yesterday?
- 4:18Cubs clinched. Cubs clinched.
- 4:21I mean, I don't know those things when it's this much left
- 4:24in the season, it's just, yeah, I don't know.
- 4:27I don't get any. Climactic.
- 4:28It's yeah, like a Saturday or Sunday, final day of the season.
- 4:31Right. I I just 10 days, you know, 10
- 4:34games is the magic number. I'm like, who cares?
- 4:36They're getting in. Like, I don't know, for whatever
- 4:38reason, that's never been anything that, yeah.
- 4:40Scoreboard watching when you're when it's over this early.
- 4:43Yeah, it's not. You know, it doesn't give you
- 4:45the little cache that it once did.
- 4:48I'm with you, there's some good games yesterday.
- 4:50Was watching a little bit of the Mets game.
- 4:52I was. I watched all of it.
- 4:53Hanging out with a buddy last night who was a Mets fan and.
- 4:56Did you have the Mets broadcast on?
- 4:58Well, we're at the casino. Oh yeah.
- 5:00Which one? Well, Prairie metals were you
- 5:02out there? Yes, Yeah, at the craps table
- 5:04and watch a little Mets Padres last night.
- 5:06How was the crowded PRM? The craps tables full, was it
- 5:10really? What time were you there?
- 5:12I got there like at 8, 8 to 10. Yeah.
- 5:15And they're handing out money last night, so that was nice of
- 5:17them. Good for that.
- 5:18Yes. The dice got a little hot, so
- 5:19that was a good evening. But yeah, I wasn't watching the
- 5:21Mets as he had a bet on that one.
- 5:23So we're keeping an eye on that and a bunch of other games, too.
- 5:25WNBA had that. I'll watch it a little bit of
- 5:27that. But back to the Mets that lead.
- 5:32I know, I know they had a chance to put some distance.
- 5:35It's not going to be the Diamondbacks strength.
- 5:37Their schedule is just too daunting.
- 5:39It's the the finish that they'll have.
- 5:41They just got through with three against the Giants.
- 5:43And I think after I think the water actually gets deeper for
- 5:47their So they've got 3 versus the Phillies at home, 3 versus
- 5:50the Dodgers, and then they go to San Diego.
- 5:53That's the nine final games for the Diamondbacks.
- 5:56They're not, they're not winning.
- 5:57Seven of those get 9 games. What do the Reds have left?
- 6:03I got it here, actually. Well, it starts today against
- 6:05the Cubs, yeah, then the Pirates and then at the Brewers, who
- 6:09will be setting their playoff rotation.
- 6:10Probably so by then, yeah. It's not great.
- 6:14If I had to because the other team in contention is the
- 6:18Giants, it might be the Reds. Might be the Reds if the if the
- 6:22Mets are going to get caught and well, let's you know, let's go
- 6:26step further. What are the Mets have?
- 6:28Well, here's the Giants. I got the Giants in front of me.
- 6:30They go to the Dodgers for four starting tonight.
- 6:33Then they have the Cardinals at home and the Rockies at home.
- 6:35Yeah. Really.
- 6:36Pretty good there for the Giants who sit 2 back and then finish
- 6:39up with the Mets. This is what they have.
- 6:42They finish up their series with the Padres tonight.
- 6:44Actually, I think it's first pitch.
- 6:46It's a day game. It is, yeah.
- 6:47We're 2 minutes away from first pitch, then the Nationals.
- 6:50OK at the Cubs. OK at the Marlins.
- 6:54Spoiler Marlins. No, I don't want the Mets in
- 6:56there. Why?
- 6:57I just. I like.
- 6:58Alonzo yeah, I like Sodo, Nemo. They're pitching stuff.
- 7:04It's it's they're starting pitching that's going to let
- 7:06them down. Well, maybe because we we would
- 7:08keep alive that Diamond Bats ticket you talked me into in
- 7:10March. Oh.
- 7:11God. Maybe that's already said
- 7:13because I don't have anything on the bats, that's for sure.
- 7:15I've. Got more Diamondbacks and more
- 7:16Rangers. You know it's funny because we
- 7:18usually have at least an opportunity to make some money.
- 7:20Baseball I I didn't catch 1 ticket.
- 7:23I catch the Blue Jays. Blue Jays.
- 7:25Folgers. Not even to win the division,
- 7:26no. Over.
- 7:27Yeah, over 76 1/2. And I had him with Duke to make
- 7:30the Final four, one of the Final four teams.
- 7:32That's the only one I cashed. But yeah, we, I I invested
- 7:36heavily in the Rangers and the Diamondbacks.
- 7:38Swing and a miss. Oh well, we'll get them next
- 7:42year. Yes, absolutely.
- 7:43We'll go right back to them. And here's the thing, it's it's
- 7:45not like you can't find a name the finalists or World Series
- 7:49exactly because of those prices will be posted coming up here.
- 7:53Any. Well, once we get to the end of
- 7:54the season. All right, I want to ask you
- 7:56this question because look at Buffalo's a really good team.
- 8:01Yeah, Miami's a really bad team. Is there any any potential
- 8:06pathway to the Dolphins winning this game in your is it a good
- 8:10game? I want to be entertained on this
- 8:11Thursday night. I think you're going to be
- 8:13looking for some baseball. I think I might be right.
- 8:16I all. Right, here's the scenario.
- 8:19Lay it on me. Buffalo defense isn't very good.
- 8:23And there are without Milano, and then without it Oliver.
- 8:26Absolutely. So you take two of the stalwarts
- 8:29out of a defense that hasn't been very good.
- 8:31You have Tua, he can get hot, and Waddle hasn't.
- 8:36You got it. Well, he was 26 to 32.
- 8:38The problem was six of those in completions, half of them went
- 8:41to the other team. You take that three to a zero,
- 8:44clean game. Tua gets hot, Waddle makes the
- 8:47plays. Tyreek Hill's finally not
- 8:48bitching and he's actually making plays and all of a
- 8:51sudden. They should be doing more damage
- 8:53through the air with that cast of receivers.
- 8:55You know, it's 2724, you know, and they, I think that's the
- 8:59only path though, right? Get it a shootout.
- 9:02Crazy things are happening. That's the only path.
- 9:04It's not 1716. No, that's not the path.
- 9:10It has to be a shootout. It has to be wide open.
- 9:12We're going to the fourth quarter and they're within a
- 9:14field, you know something like that, boy, I don't.
- 9:18See it? I just don't either.
- 9:19What's the strength of Miami's defense?
- 9:21I haven't seen him play for Miami this year.
- 9:23I mean, we're only two weeks in, but you know, I'm not going on
- 9:26my way to watch the fish. Right.
- 9:28Nothing. Right.
- 9:30Yeah, Well, Bradley Chubb. How old is Bradley Chubb?
- 9:32I don't know, don't say his name piss me off every.
- 9:35Time. What did I?
- 9:36Bradley Chubb. I guess there's your stalwart.
- 9:39No, it's not very good. It's hard to come up with a
- 9:42realistic stalwart. How much?
- 9:45Well, you got a little college football tonight.
- 9:46No, but they're bad games. Rice at Charlotte, Yeah, no,
- 9:49that doesn't do it for. You.
- 9:50No, no, I'm out. The owls No, no, not not going
- 9:54to do with. Rice No, it's going to be the
- 9:56NFL. It's it's Kirk Herbstreit and Al
- 9:59Michaels and Kaylee Hartung and a cast of thousands.
- 10:03It's a pretty good crew. The pre the half time and the
- 10:06post game crew. Do you like them?
- 10:07I think for Fitz is really good. Tony Gonzalez kind of hit or
- 10:11miss. Sherman's good, Whitworth's
- 10:15good, and Carissa Thompson kind of steers the ship.
- 10:19That's not a bad, that's not a bad set.
- 10:23I don't watch enough of it to have an opinion one way or the
- 10:25other. Now can I interest you in this?
- 10:28NFL is a blowout. Yep.
- 10:29College football does nothing for you.
- 10:31Baseball, there's nothing. That's gravity.
- 10:32Well, there's not a ton of games.
- 10:33I guess Giants and the Dodgers would be it.
- 10:36We got in the elimination game, two of them tonight in the WNBA.
- 10:39No, I'm not. Can't do it I.
- 10:41Can't do it. I haven't watched it all year
- 10:42since Caitlin got hurt. I haven't watched a game.
- 10:44Storm Aces down to the wire. No, no fever.
- 10:48No. You could see Caitlin on the
- 10:49bench. Well, no thanks.
- 10:51No, no, no. So this is game three of their
- 10:55three-game first round series, and they're in Atlanta.
- 10:58Back to Atlanta and back to Vegas for those two.
- 11:01And they're back to Phoenix, as the Phoenix put it to the
- 11:04Liberty last night, A pick that you were given at 150 yesterday
- 11:07after Oh yeah, we're on the right side.
- 11:10We're we're stacking them together back-to-back.
- 11:11Good days make a three in a row. Four in one on Tuesday.
- 11:15What were you? What's today?
- 11:17Thursday. Yeah.
- 11:18What? What did you end up yesterday?
- 11:19Yesterday was a three in one. Can we stack up three in a row?
- 11:23Why not? Probably not.
- 11:25Well, let's and hopefully carry it into the weekend so we can
- 11:28stay. Let's do that.
- 11:29Two jokers in the afternoon. Need to do that also.
- 11:32Yeah, indeed. All right good stuff bouncing
- 11:36around a little bit here, Trent. Let's go to tomorrow night, 7:00
- 11:39Well, before we do that, where will you be?
- 11:41It will prevent you from watching the game live other
- 11:44than on your phone. I'm.
- 11:44Going to be a neighbor with you is it's going to be the Battle
- 11:47of Ankeny Friday. Ank Friday nights.
- 11:49Right the Jaguars of Centennial and the Hawks of Ankeny collide
- 11:53in the intra city rivalry. Nice and be there 6:45 with the
- 11:56pregame, 7:00 with the kickoff, with the Hawks and the Jag
- 11:59you've. Done that game most years, have
- 12:01you not? Yeah, I would say, well, what's
- 12:04been going on now 12 years, something like like that, Is
- 12:06that how long it's been since? The split.
- 12:08Probably at least 10 of the 12 I've been there, I think for
- 12:11this match. Well, did it Might have been
- 12:14longer than that, because wasn't Joel Lanning's Ankeny Hawk Jerry
- 12:19Pizzetti coach championship team?
- 12:22Wasn't that the last of the before the split?
- 12:26Before the split seems right. I think it is.
- 12:29Yeah. So do they still get the does
- 12:33when when you're at that Game 2? 1013 was the first meeting. 2013
- 12:37OK, When did landing play? Not a bit about right.
- 12:42So I haven't been there. Watched an Ankeny football game
- 12:46a long time, did they? Is it still I make this?
- 12:48The visitor stands were tiny. They've they've enhanced those,
- 12:52correct? Well, that's no longer the
- 12:54visitor stands either. So there's a new press box over
- 12:56there, new bleachers on that side, the old press box side.
- 12:59Which would be on the east side of the of the field.
- 13:02Yes, that press box still is there.
- 13:04That's where I'll be for the radio broadcast along with the
- 13:06visiting coaches. But.
- 13:08And that's the visitor side. That's the visitor side, I know
- 13:11that. So the new press box is over on
- 13:13the far side of the field. And that happened, oh, probably
- 13:157-8 years ago. I think that Dennis Albaugh
- 13:18might have been the primary backer of that, or maybe the
- 13:22scoreboard, one of those things. The Albaugh Group wrote the
- 13:27check for that, I'm pretty sure. But point being it, it'll be
- 13:29packed tomorrow for this. Oh, absolutely.
- 13:31Yeah. Good.
- 13:32And I kind of like, you know, we've seen a lot of them week 1
- 13:34or even Week 2. Yeah, I'm, I'm glad.
- 13:36Give them a couple of games. Yeah, get their feet underneath
- 13:38them. Centennial ended the losing
- 13:40streak as Ankeny had won three in a row last season, 3110,
- 13:44couple years back, back in 2023, one of the best games I've ever
- 13:47called. 3938 went down to the wire, 2 point conversion to win
- 13:50it. Anderson, the quarterback, threw
- 13:52it for Ankeny. There's been some really, really
- 13:54good ones here. Both teams come in two and one
- 13:57playing for positioning come playoff time.
- 13:59Will you talk to Pizzetti, either Ryan or Jerry at all
- 14:02prior to or journey after I'll? Probably not.
- 14:04Usually just get a depth chart. OK.
- 14:06And that does it. That's usually Ryan.
- 14:08Don't get that one from Jerry. Yeah, usually send that e-mail.
- 14:10If you do see Ryan, tell him I will tell him.
- 14:12Cindy and I both. Say hi, my wife.
- 14:14Absolutely. Friends of the family, good
- 14:16people. And glad Jerry's still doing it,
- 14:19right? Yes, glad he's still doing it.
- 14:20And those old, old guard, one at Valley, one at anchoring.
- 14:23Just keep on keeping on, boys. Keep on keeping on.
- 14:26All right, So tomorrow I'll be watching Rutgers and Iowa.
- 14:30What am I going to see? You're going to see.
- 14:34Am I going to see Mark Gronowski?
- 14:36Well, you see it. Continue, right?
- 14:38But continue what we kind of thought we saw maybe the
- 14:42beginning of last week. The confidence was building.
- 14:45I get it. It wasn't the saltiest opponent,
- 14:49but it's Rutgers and I think it's going to be a close game.
- 14:54I don't think I see a blow out either way, but what do we think
- 14:57we're going to see? I have a lot of optimism that I
- 15:01was going to play well in this spot.
- 15:04Reading a lot about the injuries for Rutgers, reading about the
- 15:09injury of their best wide receiver, Strong.
- 15:11They're down to their fourth team tackle.
- 15:14They have struggled overall on their offensive line, their
- 15:17defensive front hasn't been able to do much and that schedule
- 15:20that has not been very daunting. No, they've beaten nobody.
- 15:23A couple of Mac teams. They've given up over 5 yards of
- 15:27carry. There's a lot to point to that
- 15:29this is match up wise, a really good match up.
- 15:34And did you see Chad Leistekow's article that Greg Schiano was
- 15:38almost the defensive coordinator?
- 15:40I did not. For Iowa, it was him and Norm
- 15:43Parker that it came down to the wire when really got the job.
- 15:46Way back in the day. Yeah, I just heard.
- 15:48I did not see that before. I heard Chad mention.
- 15:51I don't know if the article's out yet.
- 15:52He mentioned it on Hawk Central last night here on KX&O and
- 15:55that's the only mention. I haven't seen the article
- 15:56myself yet, but. Well, that's been a well kept
- 15:59secret. Absolutely.
- 16:00I talked to Schiano when we were in Vegas and I asked him about
- 16:03this game and but he didn't bring anything up like.
- 16:05That I'll be damned, yeah. I I wonder I don't remember that
- 16:08name on the list at all. I.
- 16:10Mean. How did nobody find that right?
- 16:12It's not the first time. 27 years later, right?
- 16:14It's not the first time I was played.
- 16:15Rutgers, with Shiano, was the head coach.
- 16:17Great job out of of Chad finding out that information and and
- 16:21tracking it down. He also mentioned last night at
- 16:23Hawk Central that he tried to ask both Kirk and Shiano about
- 16:27it. Yeah, neither really wanted to
- 16:28talk about. It yeah, way back in the day.
- 16:30That's that's really cool. All right, let's do this Trent
- 16:34Chicken coop time. Let's do it.
- 16:37Give four of your our listeners an opportunity to win some grub
- 16:40from the chicken coop. In fact, right now you can call

- 18:04That'll be a closest without going over.
- 18:06Let's go to Jim. First of all, Jim, how are you?
- 18:11I'm good, I'm good. Doing well guys.
- 18:12Just got off work at the Woodland Hills cleaning some
- 18:14golf cart. As a boy.
- 18:16And hey, by the way, Ken, what you're going to see tomorrow,
- 18:18yes, is the eye of a rushing attack that works.
- 18:21I'm just going to say I'm going to say 225 yards based on what
- 18:25Trent said with the injuries and stuff.
- 18:26So yeah, I think you're going to see a rushing attack like you
- 18:29haven't seen this year all. Right.
- 18:30Sign up. For that works for me, so you
- 18:32work for. Noble out there at Woodland
- 18:34Hills. Yeah, I do, yeah.
- 18:37Tell Noble high for me. I will do that.
- 18:39Noble Birkhead? Yes, he's a big Colts fan.
- 18:42He is, absolutely. He is.
- 18:44Yeah, I didn't want to Purdue, did he?
- 18:46I didn't know that. All right, well, let's get into
- 18:49it here, Jim. The Bills tonight are 11 1/2
- 18:51point favorite over the Dolphins.
- 18:53Give me the Dolphins. That's too many.
- 18:55A lot of points, isn't it? I would give us 2 1/2 or give us
- 18:572 1/2 to Rutgers tomorrow. Gives or gets.
- 19:01Gives. Yeah, yeah, I already placed the
- 19:04bet. So Iowa.
- 19:05OK, they get good. Utah's a 2 1/2 point favorite
- 19:08over Texas Tech on Saturday morning.
- 19:11And that's in Utah. It is, Sir, yes.
- 19:14Give me Utah because I placed that bet too all.
- 19:16Right. Indiana's at home.
- 19:18They're a 6 1/2 point favorite over the Fighting line I.
- 19:23I hate sigmeti. Illinois.
- 19:27And the point, OK, I think, I think Indiana wins, but I'll
- 19:30take the points. All right, total points is the
- 19:32tiebreaker Sunday Night Football Chiefs at Giants. 30. 2.
- 19:38Jim, enjoy the rest of your day and enjoy the weekend.
- 19:41Thank you. You too.
- 19:42Good to hear from you. Ryan is with Miller and Condon.
- 19:45Hi Ryan, how are you doing fellas?
- 19:48Good, thank you. Bills are 11 1/2 point favorite
- 19:50tonight. Take the dolphin.
- 19:53Iowa's a 2 1/2 point favorite at Rutgers.
- 19:58Iowa curb stomps them. All right, Utah is a 2 1/2 point
- 20:02favorite. They host Texas Tech.
- 20:05Yeah, we'll take the youths. Indiana's a 6 1/2 point favorite
- 20:08at home to Illinois. Indiana, they're going to look
- 20:12good this week and then they get their comeuppance in Kennick
- 20:14next week that. Works too.
- 20:16Total points Sunday Night Football Chiefs at Giants. 48.
- 20:2248 Ryan, Thank you. Enjoy the weekend.
- 20:24Thank you I. Appreciate it.
- 20:26Hello, Troy, is that you? Yes.
- 20:29How's it going? Good.
- 20:30Thank you. The Bills are 11 1/2 point
- 20:32favorite over the Dolphins tonight.
- 20:34It made a bill. I was a 2 1/2 point favorite at
- 20:37Rutgers. Iowa.
- 20:40Utah is a 2 1/2 point favorite as they will host Texas Tech on
- 20:44Saturday. Utah, Indiana 6 1/2 to Illinois
- 20:48on Saturday evening. Illinois total points tiebreaker
- 20:53closes without going over Chiefs, Giants Sunday night. 34.
- 20:5834 all right, Appreciate it. Enjoy the weekend, Todd.
- 21:01Troy, thank you and Todd is next.
- 21:03Hi, Todd. Hey.
- 21:05How's it going, Ken? Good.
- 21:07Thank you. The Bills are 11 1/2 point
- 21:09favored over Miami. Bill.
- 21:12Hawks 2 1/2 to Rutgers. Iowa.
- 21:17Oh. The Knights are covering.
- 21:20The Knights are covering. Everybody took the Hawks.
- 21:22Let's go 1716 Iowa gets the win. Utah's a 2 1/2 point favorite.
- 21:27They will host Texas Tech Todd. That too early for Utah so I'm
- 21:33going to go tech. OK, Indiana 6 1/2 to Illinois.
- 21:39Illinois. Chiefs, Giants total points
- 21:42closest with outgoing overs the tiebreaker. 36.
- 21:47Thank you, Todd, enjoy the games, hey.
- 21:50Appreciate it. Appreciate it.
- 21:51Appreciate the chicken coop for allowing us to do that.
- 21:54That's not good. Consensus.
- 21:56Is not go well. I liked Iowa too, before that,
- 22:00and I thought we were training that way with Utah, too, who I
- 22:02also like this week against Texas Tech.
- 22:04Todd was the only one. Yeah, that.
- 22:06Took. Oh boy, yeah.
- 22:08Is it set up to be one of those weeks?
- 22:11Dark One start in a Big 10 for the Hawks.
- 22:14Ken, if that happens. Oh God, with Indiana coming.
- 22:17With what still is on that schedule.
- 22:19Oh. My God, Penn State, Oregon,
- 22:26Nebraska. I'm looking forward to Nebraska,
- 22:29Michigan. That may be one of my favorite
- 22:31games this this weekend, get a sense of how the Huskers are.
- 22:35So I wonder what I was. I mean, Oklahoma's good.
- 22:37Oklahoma's good. That was a good football game.
- 22:39Was that last week or two weeks ago?
- 22:41I think it was a couple of weeks ago.
- 22:42Whatever. It was a good football game, but
- 22:45we'll see. That's the middle of the
- 22:46afternoon on Saturday. All right, so still to come this
- 22:49hour, Bill Bender from the Sporting News.
- 22:51Look forward to catching up with Bill.
- 22:52We'll do more NFL coming up here in to start our number two, our
- 22:56one O clock hour and then we will hear from Steven N simple
- 23:00on Nebraska and Michigan. Right now he's Lee Sterling,
- 23:04paramountsports.com. Hello, Lee Trenton, Ken, how are
- 23:07you? I'm good.
- 23:09I'm real good. Actually.
- 23:09It's been raining here. Get this now.
- 23:12Not all day long, but we've had some downpours. 27 straight days
- 23:17at my house in Miami. That crazy.
- 23:20I feel like I'm I'm living in Seattle.
- 23:23Yeah, well, get used to it, I guess.
- 23:25I don't know. I mean, the is it still as humid
- 23:27as it always is in the summers? It's still bad.
- 23:31You know what it was during the summer, but not now.
- 23:33What's crazy? I think that probably means if
- 23:35anyone's planning a trip to South Florida December through
- 23:39February, it'll be perfect. It'll be like 6870°.
- 23:43Not a cloud in the sky there you.
- 23:45Go. Great, great group of games he
- 23:47got for us this week. Lee.
- 23:48We'll get to Iowa, Rutgers here at the end.
- 23:51Let's start, though, the Jackson Arnold revenge tour.
- 23:55Oklahoma laying 6 1/2 against the Auburn Tigers.
- 24:01Yeah. I mean, he's going back to the
- 24:02scene of the crime. Here's the problem, I think for
- 24:05Auburn when they played Baylor, a lot of their best plays, go
- 24:09watch the game. We're broken plays.
- 24:11And I don't know if that's going to work as well against
- 24:14Oklahoma. Brent Venables, his former head
- 24:17coach, knows him pretty well, and I think there's an advantage
- 24:19there. And he calls defensive signals,
- 24:22so it's going to be tough for him here.
- 24:24And if you think John Matier is good but not great, go watch his
- 24:29old team, Washington State. They were losing to North Texas,
- 24:3240 to nothing at the half. Yeah, not even competitive and
- 24:37pop in the tape of him last year playing Washington where he
- 24:40willed his team. He's tough as.
- 24:41Nails tough, talented. Do you think he gets drafted,
- 24:47guys? Well, I think he's going to be
- 24:49in at the Heisman Awards ceremony.
- 24:53I don't know. I.
- 24:55Isn't crazy probably the top, the top three guys.
- 24:58If I had to say who the top three guys right now, if who
- 25:02deserve it, I would say it would be Matir, Carson Beck and I
- 25:10would say. Sorry, yeah.
- 25:14Good one. Marcel Reed?
- 25:16Yeah. How about Marcel Reed?
- 25:17Okay. And he missed some plays
- 25:18Saturday night against Notre Dame.
- 25:20Yeah. Yeah, he did.
- 25:22That's. A good point.
- 25:22I mean, when you're down 7, nothing after a block punt for a
- 25:26touchdown and half that was from behind, Impressive.
- 25:29But I I like, I like Oklahoma here.
- 25:33This this kid, I'm not betting against him.
- 25:34There's certain quarterbacks in the NFL I don't want to bet
- 25:36against. I'm not betting against John
- 25:38Matier just yet. He's fun to watch.
- 25:40Utah's a three-point favorite as they will host Texas Tech bright
- 25:43and early in Utah 10:00 local time.
- 25:48You, you know, we don't know that much about these two teams.
- 25:52Here's what I know for sure. Their quarterback I think is
- 25:55something special. May not be an NFL quarterback,
- 25:58but the kid can play running and throwing the Yep.
- 26:02So I'm not so sure yet. I do know the Texas Tech
- 26:07defensive line is better and that gives them a chance.
- 26:09But I think home field and I think the talent a little bit
- 26:13better than the last couple years for Utah and also special
- 26:16teams. Love their special teams.
- 26:18Give me Utah here, 3428. Utah, 3428, putting some points
- 26:24up in that one huge battle in the Big 10.
- 26:26Not on the hardwood. Yes, on grass.
- 26:28Illinois, Indiana, The Hoosiers A5 point favorite.
- 26:33I think the difference here in this game is the line play.
- 26:37Now, Indiana, everything went right.
- 26:40Their quarterback, Mendoza, who's from Miami, actually, his
- 26:44high school is probably 10 minutes from my house and he's
- 26:47playing well, but he was sacked. A lot of people don't realize
- 26:51this. 50 times last year at Cal, 50 times.
- 26:55And I think this Illinois defensive line is special, think
- 26:59they can run the football. They don't need to play perfect.
- 27:02They commit to or less turnovers.
- 27:04I think they're going to win the game here.
- 27:06I, I think Illinois is the right side here.
- 27:08They've beaten some good teams last couple years, Kansas,
- 27:11Nebraska, Michigan, South Carolina and Duke, and they're
- 27:15only bad losses by more than a touchdown.
- 27:18Where to Penn State and Oregon. I like Illinois up 30 to 20.
- 27:23Wrong team is favored. Lovett.
- 27:25All right, Michigan is off to Lincoln, NE.
- 27:28The Huskers are getting 2 1/2 from Michigan.
- 27:33They are. And if you put the rosters and
- 27:37based on talent side by side, Michigan's better, you know, no
- 27:42question about it. One through 40, let's say, but
- 27:46it's not played based on rosters.
- 27:49Dylan Rayola I think is starting to come into his own because he
- 27:53has a really good offensive coordinator.
- 27:55Finer finally, Dana Holgerson, Dana Horgerson may not have been
- 27:58a good head coach, but look wherever he went, he would turn
- 28:0150. Sixty 70th rated offenses in the
- 28:03top 10 offenses. Matt Rule also as a home
- 28:08underdog, can't judge that first year in Nebraska yet.
- 28:11Nothing. Didn't have a home underdog
- 28:14situation last year, but he was five and two his career at
- 28:18Baylor. He loves this situation.
- 28:21I think the defense a little bit better.
- 28:23They two of the three opponents allowed less than 200 yards and
- 28:27271 total yards against. Since he and since he I think is
- 28:30underrated as an offense. Also, Bryce Underwood, these are
- 28:35the back-to-back top rated quarterbacks coming out of
- 28:38college football. I think he's going to be really
- 28:40good, but but they just don't trust him yet.
- 28:43A lot of third and five or longer, everything is underneath
- 28:45to a tight end, to a back flanker screen.
- 28:48And these guys when they catch the ball, if they catch it, they
- 28:51got to avoid a tackle or two just to get a first down.
- 28:53So I don't like the play calling.
- 28:55I think they're too conservative right now.
- 28:57And the final piece here, no Sharon more here.
- 29:02He's not going to be coaching. He's been away from the team for
- 29:04two weeks. Who's taking over Back to the
- 29:08Future Pogy? He is not a good in in game
- 29:11decision maker if you watch when he was at Charlotte.
- 29:16How long came his favoured wins outright 2421?
- 29:21And we finish up on Friday night.
- 29:23Tomorrow night, the Hawkeyes on the road for Rutgers, Iowa 2 1/2
- 29:27point choice. Rutgers, I think just one of
- 29:31these teams, they can play up to a certain level and I respect,
- 29:34you know, their their coaching staff, they get their kids
- 29:37ready, have a good game plan. They just can't make plays when
- 29:41it happens and they really need to.
- 29:43So that is a problem for them. You know, I think I wouldn't say
- 29:48it's going to bust out, but I think that they're they're going
- 29:52to be able to make some plays here.
- 29:54So I know they're ranked 120th on offense if you count just the
- 30:00Big 10 games, but the Hawkeyes were six and three in the Big 10
- 30:05to Rutgers four and five and each played one rank Big 10
- 30:08opponent. Rutgers has been blocking and
- 30:10returning kicks like crazy, but that that energy usually dries
- 30:14up when you start playing the big boys in conference hearing.
- 30:18Despite the Scarlet Knight's reputation for defensive special
- 30:20teams, they're 3 and 11 against the spread as a home underdog
- 30:24under Greg Schiano. Iowa, The right team is favored,
- 30:272620. All right, it's an early
- 30:30Saturday morning game. Madison is the scene.
- 30:33It's Maryland who's something, well, as you can say, somehow
- 30:36unbeaten. It's all schedule related,
- 30:37unbeaten, but it's Maryland and they're getting a bunch of
- 30:40points. So I see that.
- 30:41Did I see that right, Lee? Yep, getting 1010 double digits,
- 30:47double digits so. This your game of the week?
- 30:51Yep. If it do you think this is a
- 30:53blowout or do you think this is going to be a tight game and
- 30:56maybe Maryland pulls it off, be one of the 1st 10 callers.
- 30:59We'll give it to him for free, 800-400-9741.
- 31:03Again, that number 800-400-9741. And this is the promotion
- 31:07everyone's always waiting for. I get more calls, texts and
- 31:10emails about this promotion. It's the Baker's dozen.
- 31:13In fact, couple clients call it the world's famous Baker's
- 31:17Dozen. It's 13 games combined Saturday
- 31:20and Sunday, just $97.00. People love the price point.
- 31:24As soon as you purchase it, window pops open with all 13
- 31:28games so you don't have to call back on Saturday and Sunday.
- 31:31And we've had some 12:00 and 1:11 and 2:10 and 3:00 records.
- 31:34You want to get the world's famous Baker's as in 13 games,
- 31:38$97.00, just one place paramountsports.com.
- 31:41We. Will talk to you next Thursday.
- 31:42Thank you, Lee. Thanks guys.
- 31:44Yep, good to talk to you, Lee Sterling, Paramount Sports.
- 31:47All right, Bill Bender coming up next from The Sporting News.
- 31:50Miller and Condon Moore college football conversation.
- 31:52On the other side, it's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 31:56I'm Mallory Condon, welcome back.
- 31:58It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network flag shipped out of Des
- 32:01Moines sports station 106.3 KX. And oh, Bill Bender covers
- 32:05football mostly college does dip his toe into the NFL for the
- 32:09Sporting News, sportingnews.com. Bill Trenton, Ken, thanks for
- 32:14giving us a couple of minutes here.
- 32:15Certainly some big games in the two conferences that move the
- 32:18needle most in our footprint, the Big 10 and the Big 12.
- 32:21I'll start with the Big 12. Couple of them there.
- 32:24I want to get to the Baylor, Arizona State game, but let's
- 32:27start first with Texas Tech and Utah.
- 32:29I think we're going to see one of these two teams play for a
- 32:34Big 12 championship, Bill. We're early.
- 32:36We're about to kick it off conference play, but I still
- 32:39think Utah and Texas Tech have some cache behind their names.
- 32:42How do you see this game, Bill? Yeah, contrasting styles.
- 32:46It's tough to pick, you know, Texas Tech obviously, you know,
- 32:50Baron Morton scoring ton of points against lesser
- 32:53competition. It's all kind of an early season
- 32:56breakthrough with Kyle Whittingham and that defense.
- 32:59So yeah, it's a tough one to tough one to gauge, you know,
- 33:04but I I like Utah, I like Devin Dam Pierre, I like their defence
- 33:08and I like that they're a home early kickoff makes it
- 33:11interesting. So I think you're right though,
- 33:13Ken, when are this game probably plays with Big 12 Championship
- 33:17when we get to November, December?
- 33:19Ken mentioned Arizona State, Baylor, I think a really
- 33:22intriguing game, both teams already with a loss on their
- 33:24schedule and and really looking to bounce back.
- 33:27The loser. This one I think is going to be
- 33:29having a lot of questions about the program.
- 33:31Do you see an advantage one side or the other?
- 33:33Do you see it kind of what the point spread says?
- 33:35This is basically a coin flip game.
- 33:37Yeah, Yeah, I do. And and you know, for Arizona
- 33:40State, I've said all along, and I thought I know they ran the
- 33:43ball effectively. But if you know what they're
- 33:46missing, watch the Giants on Sunday.
- 33:49I mean, Kim Sabu is going to be starting soon, you know, and I
- 33:53think that that is what they're missing.
- 33:55And not to say that Sam Levitz not good or doing, Tyson's not
- 33:58good, but you know, now you're playing against Sawyer
- 34:00Robertson. Who I I guess I'm getting
- 34:04frustrated with this one because I have no idea who in the world
- 34:07the the Heisman leader is, but Sawyer Robertson could be one of
- 34:11those guys as we get into it. Yeah, I, I I wholeheartedly
- 34:15agree with you there. Well, let's go to Lincoln.
- 34:18This game fascinates me. Middle of the afternoon on
- 34:21Saturday, Michigan and and Nebraska, we're going to
- 34:25obviously learn a whole bunch more about Nebraska.
- 34:27They're finally going to play somebody with a pulse.
- 34:30Look forward to that. Michigan lost to Oklahoma
- 34:33earlier, but I think this got a chance to be a real good game,
- 34:35Bill. You know, any minute now, I got
- 34:38AT shirt with Matt. I talked to Matt Rule yesterday
- 34:40and I like Matt Rule. I think he's a real dude.
- 34:44He's relatable, You know that. The halftime speech went viral
- 34:47and I got a little fired up. I want to go put some shoulder
- 34:50pads on and hit somebody from Akron, no less.
- 34:53That would have been easy, but it was fun and he's a good guy
- 34:59and this is a big opportunity. There's some streaks at work.
- 35:02The one narrative he's kind of put to bed is the one score
- 35:04thing. They've won three and five
- 35:06against one score law and games and.
- 35:09Now, I mean, it's been a. Friend, I told you, man, I told
- 35:12one of my editors this yesterday.
- 35:13Do you think I would have ever said that Nebraska lost 27
- 35:17straight games against ranked opponents.
- 35:19The Nebraska we grew up with, I mean, what an opportunity for
- 35:23them against a very good Michigan team.
- 35:24Excited about the quarterback matchup.
- 35:27I still think the Wolverines win, but won't be surprised if
- 35:30Nebraska does. This popped up on
- 35:32sportingnews.com one minute ago the article, so it has been
- 35:36posted since we've been speaking.
- 35:38Very timely conversation with Bill Bender.
- 35:40Bill, I asked you, you're making a road trip next week.
- 35:43You're going to be working from home this weekend as you'll go
- 35:45out to State College for work in Penn State.
- 35:47But this week, the Illinois Indiana game, maybe they're just
- 35:51something because I remember watching Ray Com, some of these
- 35:54crappy games back in the day between these two teams.
- 35:57And here we are for the first time in either of our lifetime.
- 36:00Certainly Bill and maybe Ken's as well.
- 36:02Illinois Indiana matters on a national scale this week.
- 36:06What do you think we're going to see in Bloomington?
- 36:09I mean, what a game, what a, what a fun game. 2 coaches that
- 36:13have really done a nice job at those programs.
- 36:16The again, contrasting styles. One thing to keep in mind,
- 36:19Altmeyer and Mendoza have combined for 17 touchdowns and
- 36:22no interceptions. Now competition levels up here
- 36:26and Indiana can run the ball and a spotlight for them and their
- 36:30program. Am I crazy for like in Illinois
- 36:33though? And that defense and that
- 36:34defensive line, and I know it's going to be a close game.
- 36:38And I just kind of trust Brett here in that underdog, underdog
- 36:41rule. And I think the Illini get the
- 36:43dub. But if Indiana wins and I've
- 36:46qualified two of these now, I won't be surprised because Kurt
- 36:50Zignetti has created, you know, an environment there in Indiana
- 36:53where it's a tough place to play.
- 36:55And I do remember what they did in Nebraska last year.
- 36:58We're already seeing coaches walk the plank.
- 37:00How important? And because we thought the
- 37:02Florida game was important last week, now it's Florida versus
- 37:06Miami. What is what does this mean in
- 37:08the grand scheme of things for Billy Napier, if anything, right
- 37:10now, here and now? I know we all hate coaching
- 37:14cliches, but they're still playing hard.
- 37:16I know, DJ. Lagley turned the ball over five
- 37:19times last week, but they still play hard and they've got dudes
- 37:22on defense. That's what I watch like.
- 37:24So my indicator would be if Miami just blows them out and
- 37:28it's like 49, nothing. And you can see guys quitting on
- 37:30the field and it's something we can all detect without knowing
- 37:34all the you can see when guys quit.
- 37:36And I don't think it's quit on Billy yet.
- 37:39And you know, it's not his fault.
- 37:41The schedule is what it is. I understand all that.
- 37:44And maybe his days are numbered after all.
- 37:46But I think this is a really good chance for them to show
- 37:50that their backs are against the wall because it's not going to
- 37:52get any easier. Wait till these narratives
- 37:55combine when Texas plays Florida and either Billy Napier is going
- 37:58to get fired or Arch Manning is going to get benched.
- 38:01Which ones are going to be? That's, oh boy.
- 38:07Speaking of narratives, I just want to get your perspective.
- 38:10Notre Dame's still ranked some people.
- 38:12It fires them up. Some people say, well, most.
- 38:14A lot of teams would be O and two, and a lot of teams in the
- 38:16top 25 would be O and two against Miami and A&M.
- 38:20Did you have a problem with that when that came out from The
- 38:22Associated Press? No, it's tough because they
- 38:27should they be ranked, I wouldn't have them in my top 25,
- 38:31but it's not because of the record necessarily.
- 38:34I just, they're giving up too many passing yards.
- 38:36They've got more flaws than they do last year.
- 38:38They're good quarterbacks, young and they'll come along.
- 38:41But here was the reaction I had was the first one was OK,
- 38:44they're probably out of the playoff.
- 38:46And then you start to think about it, they're they might not
- 38:48be. That's one of those things you
- 38:50do on Saturday night at like 1:00 in the morning.
- 38:52Then you start to rethink it when you get up because you're
- 38:54like, well, if they win 10 games and these SEC teams have to play
- 38:58each other and who knows what happens in the Big 10?
- 39:01And maybe they look really good. But it was a costly loss.
- 39:04I mean, they had think about how and Urban Meyer talked about
- 39:08this. We missed the goal at Tennessee,
- 39:13Mayfield goal at Georgia Tech, Clemson and a bottled extra
- 39:16point at Notre Dame. Name those were they.
- 39:19They altered the entire class picture.
- 39:21Yep, indeed. I'm just going to play in about
- 39:2320 seconds. Bill Quick, quick hit on Auburn,
- 39:26Oklahoma. Any opinion there?
- 39:30I. Like it to be a tight game but I
- 39:31think the Sooners win. I like the fear but protect
- 39:35Jackson Arnold in this game. Good stuff Bill, hope to run you
- 39:38down before you make your way to College Station for what should
- 39:41be a fascinating game next week. Thank you Bill Bender, enjoy the
- 39:44weekend. Appreciate it.
- 39:46I appreciate you. Thank you.
