Latest / The Lunch Rush with Trent Condon / Weekend Recap including NBA/NHL Finals, bad umps & yelling at Mike in Waterloo, Scott Dochterman talks about the NCAA House settlement
Transcript
- 0:09All righty, good afternoon. Welcome to Miller and Condon on
- 0:12a Monday. The Iowa Sports Radio Network,
- 0:16wherever you're listening in the state of Iowa.
- 0:17Grateful that you are as we are back to Iowa based programming
- 0:20now for the next block of well, six hours.
- 0:23Here's what's coming up with Trent and I at the bottom of the
- 0:25hour, Scott, Dr. man from the athletic perfect guest to help
- 0:29us out with the house settlement is the 2 knuckleheads you're
- 0:31about to listen to. Kind of clueless when it comes
- 0:33to these things. We like X's and O's.
- 0:36We like to speculate and react to what what we saw, not when it
- 0:39gets into the logistics and legalities and blah, blah, blah.
- 0:43Anyway, Scott Dockerman will be good at that and he'll join us
- 0:45at the bottom of the hour. Hopefully he'll dumb it down for
- 0:48the two dummies that you're listening to as we talked.
- 0:51Really sell it as well here on a Monday.
- 0:53Well. It's just you know what?
- 0:54But it's a reality. It is it is in a lot of ways
- 0:57right Then our number 2 Matt Snyder CBSSports.com.
- 1:01He covers Major League Baseball, he writes about Major League
- 1:03Baseball. Lot of ground to cover with Matt
- 1:06Snyder. Umpires continue to be an an
- 1:08issue, although it sounds like robo arms may be here as soon as
- 1:11next year while behind the home plate anyways, so we'll talk to
- 1:15Matt Snyder about that and other things.
- 1:18Have you seen the baseball viewing numbers?
- 1:20They're off the charts in a positive way.
- 1:22I saw that they, I saw a figure last week that they were up
- 1:25pretty significantly, double figures in a lot of ways.
- 1:28Yes, absolutely. So here what Here's what they
- 1:30are National T VS up 22%, led by ESPN.
- 1:33Who's giving up baseball, TBS and Fox up 16 and 10 game
- 1:38attendance is at A7 year high and that high was reached.
- 1:44It was broken last year. So it continues to to grow.
- 1:47So baseball it's it's doing very well.
- 1:49But we will other than buying a plate.
- 1:52So we'll talk to Matt Snyder, kick off hour number two and
- 1:55then our friend Alec Bussey who did the morning show with
- 1:57Heather this morning. He'll be on talk about the
- 2:01recruiting weekend. Any news on Jet Tamala as he
- 2:04goes back and forth, I guess. And he's, I mean, I get it to a
- 2:06young man, he's got an opportunity.
- 2:08Yes, it seems like I don't, I don't want to say Iowa State's a
- 2:11fall back plan, but it kind of feels like that in some ways.
- 2:14But if you've got Alabama that's courting you, tough to turn that
- 2:17down. We'll get the latest on Tamala
- 2:19and other Cyclone related topics.
- 2:21How will they handle the house settlement, etcetera.
- 2:24When Bussey joins us, Trent, we'll make some picks and try to
- 2:26stack another winning week together on top of last weeks.
- 2:29He'll do that. Circus Sports sponsor about 1:50
- 2:32here today, so let's react to the weekend.
- 2:35OK, there's a lot. There really isn't.
- 2:38And we'll get to the baseball. I want to talk about the the the
- 2:40basketball for for at least to start the show.
- 2:44And it's not like I don't think this floored you that OKC won
- 2:48last night and in the fashion that they did.
- 2:50They needed to get the split after losing homecourt when they
- 2:54fell down 1. Nothing in in game number one.
- 2:57That wasn't going to be the case last night, but it was just so
- 3:00many dudes, right, that were just, I mean, Wiggins, where did
- 3:06that come from? Right.
- 3:07Where did him in particular? I think that was maybe the
- 3:11biggest surprise of anybody. We talked about Caruso.
- 3:14Caruso another one. And we've talked about him
- 3:16defensively because he is a Unicorn defensively.
- 3:19But not making threes. Yes, what?
- 3:21What he can do guarding every position, you know, people, Oh
- 3:24yeah, he can guard one through 5.
- 3:25They can't. It's usually a lie.
- 3:27This is the one time it's certainly at the NBA level that
- 3:29it's actually truthful that a guy can do it and oh by the way,
- 3:32in an NBA Finals game, a must win for your team.
- 3:35He drops in 20 on top of. It yeah, it was unbelievable.
- 3:37What were the they were nine for 16, Wiggins and Caruso from
- 3:41three. Now, if you're if you're a Pacer
- 3:44fan, you got to think just, well, they're not going to do
- 3:46that again. And I put find it hard to
- 3:48believe that they would. But this was just they needed
- 3:52this game last night and they got the game last night.
- 3:54It really wasn't not a lot of drama in it.
- 3:58I didn't think watching the entire game, you never felt
- 4:01like, Oh my God, they're going to blow this one again.
- 4:05We know the propensity for this Indiana squad to, you know, with
- 4:10their with the comebacks that they've had time after time
- 4:12after time. Does Halliburton need to get
- 4:14going earlier? He does.
- 4:16I think he just has to be more selfish, more aggressive.
- 4:19It's not part of his basketball DNA.
- 4:21Yeah, when he's cooking, he'll do that.
- 4:23He'll take some heat checks, But in general, that's not the kind
- 4:26of basketball player that he is. But in order for them to win
- 4:29this series, he has to be selfish.
- 4:32And I, I just don't think as a basketball player he really has
- 4:35that image to do that for the next 5 games right, That he has
- 4:38to do that at least three of them in order for them to win.
- 4:42I. Do they need to win both of
- 4:43these next two? Well, they have to win game
- 4:45three. This, this is the embodiment of
- 4:49a must win. To me, that's not a must win
- 4:51that you're on the brink of elimination.
- 4:53Right. Because you're not beating this
- 4:55Thunder team three out of five. I don't.
- 4:56Think you are Trent. I totally agree with you.
- 4:58I think they might have to win them both personally.
- 5:00And I'm kind of with you there, but start with the first one
- 5:02Wednesday. That is must win the way OKC
- 5:07defends unless there's an injury or something, you're even with
- 5:10their death. I don't know if that would
- 5:11matter unless it be the SGA. They're so good on that end of
- 5:15the floor that I can't see a way that Indiana wins three out of
- 5:18four. So yes, but must win there.
- 5:20And I think I'm kind of with you too.
- 5:22I think you have you got to get both of them.
- 5:23Got to get both of them. We'll see.
- 5:26I mean, you can only get one at a time, so you get to get the
- 5:28first one, which is Wednesday night.
- 5:30Wednesday. Friday.
- 5:31Wednesday Friday in NHL is tonight and Thursday night. 2
- 5:35pretty big games there, obviously, as the scene shifts
- 5:38black to back to Florida, tied up at 1 apiece.
- 5:40All right, for this is a rarity I really want to talk about.
- 5:44I can. I was so entertained and I was
- 5:46going to text you and then it's like, well, is he sleeping?
- 5:48And I don't want to ruin anything for you.
- 5:50For the double overtime game. I just sat there again as we
- 5:53talk about often during the spring time, I don't know the
- 5:55sport. I don't know it well.
- 5:57I can't break things down. It's just enjoyment and that's
- 6:01why I loved what we saw at the French Open.
- 6:03I don't know much. Of you know what I missed an
- 6:06event didn't. I you did and this happens once
- 6:08every couple of years with tennis and you just and I'm
- 6:11always surprised by you. I saw the I saw Twitter going
- 6:14crazy. I'm watching the Cubs.
- 6:16I'm watching my Blue Jays and Twins.
- 6:18I'm not into tennis, I've never heard of these guys, but by all
- 6:22accounts this was special. And and that's what because you
- 6:25love sport, you know what, it's two guys.
- 6:27It's motto. Vivan, you love that part.
- 6:29Those are things that you absolutely enjoy.
- 6:31But back to Friday and just the sheer enjoyment of watching and
- 6:36the speed of the game. Did you see Mcdavid's assist?
- 6:39Oh yeah, absolutely incredible. And knowing the only way I
- 6:44believe that Florida could win this, they had to get the
- 6:46overtime. They had to get the split there
- 6:49down to nothing against that squad.
- 6:51I just couldn't do it. And then as I was going through
- 6:54and between overtime one and two, I was reading there was
- 6:57something that popped up on on my Twitter feed about why
- 7:01Edmonton needs to win now because next year is going to be
- 7:04salary cap issues for them. Yes, they'll still have McDavid
- 7:07and Dry. Salt but.
- 7:08But that's another thing he has a sock hockey novice don't
- 7:13really know is yes, you need a little bit more depth to just
- 7:16two tremendous players and the likelihood to them having that
- 7:20kind of depth and that they're going to be able to do what
- 7:22they're doing this year is going to be incredibly different.
- 7:24It's threading the needle right for them next year.
- 7:27And then that kind of added another layer to it.
- 7:28Well, boy, if they lose this one, then the pressure comes
- 7:31right back to Edmonton because the time is now you have a all
- 7:34timer. So people consider the best
- 7:36hockey player ever to never win a Stanley Cup.
- 7:38That's true and he's there. It just I think it that even
- 7:42added another layer of enjoyment.
- 7:43So did you stay up for it? No, I'm glad I didn't text you.
- 7:48Well, you could have texted me. I wouldn't answer.
- 7:49Yeah. Because you you when you wake up
- 7:51in the morning though. First thing I do, I don't.
- 7:53I start the coffee, don't go on my Twitter machine.
- 7:55I don't go on the phone. I don't know how you do.
- 7:57Everything's still turned off. I turn on the TV and I'm
- 8:00watching it like I, you know, just took Jet out to pee or.
- 8:02Something I, I don't know how you do that part of it, that for
- 8:05me to not look at my phone first thing in the morning.
- 8:10You don't use an alarm though either, right?
- 8:11No. And never.
- 8:13Never. I've never used an alarm in my
- 8:15life that I can recall. And maybe that's the part
- 8:18because I have the alarm going off and then boom, you'd go that
- 8:20way. But I I'm just always baffled
- 8:23that yeah, you can text. When I used to have to drive and
- 8:26I know everybody's got these stories.
- 8:27Yeah, when when I did mornings on the jock and we went on the
- 8:31air at six and I lived in Ankeny, I would be up at 3:30
- 8:35and I would leave at 4:45 for Indianola every day.
- 8:38And I never once got up by an alarm.
- 8:39And Saturday and Sundays and people are that were, you know,
- 8:42up early every day at least. I find it a rarity that you come
- 8:46across somebody that, you know, I call sleep in on Saturday and
- 8:49Sunday. You don't do that.
- 8:50Yeah. Your.
- 8:51Body clock gets, yeah, but no one never did.
- 8:54But it was a phenomenal game. It truly was.
- 8:56Brad Marchant with the overtime winner.
- 8:58What an acquisition at the trade deadline.
- 9:00This was the captain of the Boston Bruins and they weren't
- 9:03going to I guess pay him What what he just fit in perfectly
- 9:08and he scored the same goal twice.
- 9:10He scored a short handed goal in a similar fashion.
- 9:12You know, don't let him get behind you.
- 9:13That would be my recommendation today for the Oilers.
- 9:17But that play by McDavid to dry sidle.
- 9:19He he he walks around Sasha barkov #2 overall pick in his
- 9:23draft year. He completely fakes out Aranek
- 9:26by the number one overall pick in his draft, makes them both
- 9:30look silly and then feeds the puck over top of, you know, I'm
- 9:34not sure what defender it was. Stick perfectly on to the stick
- 9:37of Lee and Leon Dry Seidel, who's a top ten player in the
- 9:40league in his own right and boom, you know what's going to
- 9:42happen back in the net. Just a phenomenal play,
- 9:45phenomenal play. I'm watching it again.
- 9:47I, I just, I mean, I just, I have to watch it again and it's,
- 9:51it's that good, you know, it's just that good.
- 9:54Yet we get one, one. I know casual fans that need big
- 9:59need big teams are not going to be involved in this, right.
- 10:03But after what we got a year ago and the memories that you've had
- 10:07to help trigger 3O3 straight a Game 7, the names, the teams,
- 10:14the way that they've been built, I think the casual just sport
- 10:16fan, as we talked about with the French hope this is going to be
- 10:19something if this if we get to a game six, Game 7, and I think we
- 10:22will. I hope you're right.
- 10:24This is going to be. It's not going to set records
- 10:27for television. No, it's not because it's
- 10:28getting killed. I'm sure.
- 10:29You know what? What was it going up against
- 10:35Texas? Texas Tech on on Friday night?
- 10:36I bet that beat hockey. Yeah.
- 10:38And if that thing would have been a three, two Game 2, was it
- 10:41a blowout? It was 10 four, yeah.
- 10:44So maybe that helped out the hockey.
- 10:45It was close when? I saw it was maybe that helped
- 10:47out the hockey a little bit. But overall I think we're going
- 10:50to get that. I think that that casual fans
- 10:52going to start because remember last year Game 7 beginning
- 10:55didn't rate very well. By the time game seven, it grew,
- 10:58it did, and it got some good numbers, better than I think
- 11:00they anticipated for that. And I think what we saw last
- 11:03year and now this year we can get to that level.
- 11:05Well, I think Edmonton better win tonight we'll see if they're
- 11:07able to do so, but they're just too evenly in the game.
- 11:11One went to overtime, right single overtime, Game 2 double
- 11:14overtime. So these two teams not a lot
- 11:17between them. We'll see where it goes tonight.
- 11:19All right. The baseball story from over the
- 11:21weekend, to me, it was great baseball in a lot of respects,
- 11:24but it's just that, just this one overriding issue and it's
- 11:29these umpires are worse than they've ever been.
- 11:31So are we talking Derek Thomas? Is that where we're going first?
- 11:34The home plate umpire from yesterday.
- 11:36In in Detroit. Against Nico Horner.
- 11:39Yeah, you're having a bad day. And that's how he said it.
- 11:42Well, you've heard the audio. Oh, absolutely.
- 11:44And I really enjoy that component that is.
- 11:46I'm shocked that they had it. Well, we've seen a lot ton of it
- 11:49this year and a little bit last year it started to sprinkle it
- 11:52and it felt like maybe every couple weeks we'd get something
- 11:55like that. Well, what was actually said?
- 11:57And you get that on field audio and on top of it, then we get
- 12:03the networks. Yeah, we're gonna play this.
- 12:04Yeah. I don't know if it was a
- 12:06relenting of Major League Baseball, somebody just asking
- 12:09the question. That's a good point.
- 12:10You know, who can we actually play this audio?
- 12:12Yeah, sure, whatever it is. But thank goodness for it
- 12:15because this is new. Yes, as we're getting it,
- 12:18though, I love it. And to hear, because how many
- 12:20post games have we heard the player side of it and like, come
- 12:24on, that's not. That you have to say the magic.
- 12:26Word yes, that's not the way the conversation.
- 12:28What how many times have you and I said that to each other?
- 12:31Well, they must have said that. Well here if we didn't have this
- 12:35on field audio, we would be having that.
- 12:37We heard Nico's version right, Right.
- 12:40Yeah, that's what you said. Sure.
- 12:41That's all you said to the home plate umpire got wrong in three
- 12:44seconds. There's no way now we know.
- 12:46Yeah, and council came up and backed up his players.
- 12:49He knew that he would. And he got run too.
- 12:52So that was bad. That was bad.
- 12:54And you know what else was bad in that game?
- 12:56And I and I'm sick of this Kyle Turner, Tucker, love, I really
- 12:58am. This guy, Trent, I, I don't want
- 13:00to say he's, he's not overrated, but he's not worth the money
- 13:05they're going to pay him. In my opinion.
- 13:07He's not a right fielder. Both.
- 13:08Those things can be right. Yeah, both those things can be
- 13:10right. He's got a good stick but his
- 13:12ice cold right now, but he misplays more balls or takes the
- 13:16wrong room and he did again yesterday.
- 13:18Those first two runs on the board yesterday were completely
- 13:21on him as he misplayed a ball that went over his head to
- 13:25nothing and Kate Horton and the Cubs could never recover.
- 13:28It was only a couple of weeks ago that he did it when they
- 13:31were in. Were they in Miami?
- 13:32I think they were in Miami. I have no idea how he gets a
- 13:35Gold Glove. Kathy loves him out there.
- 13:37Kathy's wrong. But anyways, to the umpiring
- 13:40story. Doug Eddings, his ball and
- 13:45strikes were just atrocious over the this.
- 13:48It's just it's a problem and I'm I don't want, I want an umpire
- 13:55behind the plate. I don't want technology to
- 13:58totally take over the game, right.
- 14:00But at the same time, if you can't get it right and you have
- 14:05the ability to get it right, it's like it's like replay in
- 14:09the NFL or replay in college basketball.
- 14:12I'm all for it as long as it does linger, but.
- 14:16You're ready for it, time. You've been ready for it for a
- 14:18long time, longer than I have. So I want to take you back to a
- 14:22week ago Friday. Told you I went to the icubs
- 14:24game, right? Jack and I went out there and
- 14:26for the first time I saw the throughout the course of the
- 14:29game, because we were there the whole time.
- 14:31I saw the replay system with balls and stripes.
- 14:33And how long did it take? A step of a finger it.
- 14:37Taps his helmet. The batter taps his helmet.
- 14:39Yes. And by the way, a Major League
- 14:41player got tossed out for that this week.
- 14:42Did you see that? Did they?
- 14:44Yes, because he tapped his helmet.
- 14:45Because that's been happening more and more.
- 14:48And he up, threw him out, tossed him.
- 14:50Ridiculous, ridiculous. That aside, the system isn't
- 14:55perfect. Who knows?
- 14:56Like there's going to be, as I've always been concerned and
- 15:00warned about that slider that's unhittable.
- 15:02Let's slap it off the bit. Yes, it caught a it nipped the
- 15:06bottom corner of the zone as it ended up 3 feet in the other
- 15:09batter box. That's not a straight.
- 15:12But that aside, watching the way in action, how quick it is, the
- 15:17umpire behind home plate, they're challenging, goes up on
- 15:23the screen, change the call, boom.
- 15:26I mean, it's so quick. You maintain your challenge, it
- 15:30goes fast. It was, and we're two months
- 15:33into the season. I was surprised just how easy it
- 15:36was for that to happen, to watch it, watch it in action.
- 15:40It didn't change the game. It didn't change my enjoyment of
- 15:43the game. In fact, I think it enhanced it.
- 15:45It was something that you see. They got it right.
- 15:48Yeah. You know, I'll go back to when
- 15:50we, for those of you listening around the state, there was a
- 15:54show on KX&O back. I'm trying to remember the time
- 15:56period 2008 9:10 somewhere in there 9/10/11.
- 16:02Well, I think it was even a little bit well earlier than
- 16:04that because it was I believe on already before I moved here,
- 16:08which would have been like O 6 is when I moved here.
- 16:11And I believe it was maybe on the OR maybe it was the follow
- 16:13year, but might. Have been the but it was here at
- 16:14KX&O and and there were two Major League umpires that lived
- 16:17in in Des Moines, the late Eric Cooper, who's an Iowa State grad
- 16:22and the great and I I truly believe that and he's a friend
- 16:26of mine. I'm biased.
- 16:27Tim McClellan, they did a show on KX&O and I want to say it was
- 16:33Tuesday nights, Tuesday's in the offseason, it was called UMSI
- 16:37View. It was phenomenal.
- 16:38So I got to and and part of their agreement that they could
- 16:41do the show here is throughout the regular season, once a week
- 16:44they would come on with whatever show I was part of at the time,
- 16:47usually per all Jimmy B. But when replay first game to
- 16:52the game, they were reluctant to embrace it because they thought
- 16:55they were going to be embarrassed.
- 16:57They thought that they were going to be shown up by a, by
- 17:01somebody, you know, over ruling their call that they missed it
- 17:04and replay got it right the next year.
- 17:09And, and it stuck with me. They totally changed their
- 17:12opinion of it in a positive way. They weren't so against umpiring
- 17:19our replay in, in baseball in year #2 because they didn't know
- 17:22what it was going to be. They didn't want to be shown up.
- 17:25That's one of the things about UMS right.
- 17:26That's why they have such a short fuse that you can't show
- 17:29up an umpire. We get that.
- 17:32But they totally changed their opinions.
- 17:33So I'm wondering if there's, you know, we'll come around to
- 17:36this'll just people like the designated hitter or the wild
- 17:40card in the play offs. It's something that you know,
- 17:42that old boots don't want to don't want the game to change
- 17:47that all of a sudden it gets it wasn't as bad as I thought it
- 17:49was going to be. So we'll see where it goes.
- 17:52I'm yeah, looking through and trying to find some old times of
- 17:55when it started and finding some articles, unfortunately, about
- 17:57Eric's passing a beloved figure. I knew a lot of people that knew
- 18:02Coop and such a nice guy. Nothing but great things to say.
- 18:05Met him a couple of times. Just yeah.
- 18:07Super nice, interesting guy, fun to talk.
- 18:10Not just baseball with, but but everything.
- 18:12He's great. They're both were.
- 18:13Yes, they both were. And Tim was such a such a big
- 18:17man as I'm talking like he's gone.
- 18:19He's not. Yeah, 6/6.
- 18:21I mean, and some of the some of the the stuff that's happened in
- 18:26his career, I mean the George Brett thing, that's Tim
- 18:28McClellan. The Brett goes crazy running out
- 18:30of the dugout at Yankee Stadium. The Sammy Sosa cork bat, who's
- 18:34the home plate umpire in the crew chief?
- 18:36That would be Tim McClellan. Game 163, Padres.
- 18:39Colorado, the the one guy that that made the call, everybody
- 18:44thought he got it wrong, but he was the one that had it right in
- 18:46front of him. You know, there it was blocked.
- 18:48Can might he have got it wrong I guess.
- 18:51I think. He got wrong, but a lot of a lot
- 18:54of people feel the same way. Look, I thought but the same way
- 18:56yesterday that the the replay got wrong.
- 18:59Ian Hap was safe. Ian Hap was safe, but you
- 19:02couldn't overturn it. The catcher tagged the ground
- 19:06between his outstretched arms. He was sliding head first.
- 19:10But it's not perfect. But if you've got an opportunity
- 19:13to get it right, I think I've come around this.
- 19:15Just get the damn thing right. And we do it now.
- 19:18We do it at first base, we do it at second base.
- 19:21Those umpires still have a job, you know.
- 19:24Still out there, still have to be in control of what?
- 19:26If we have a brawl, what are the robots going to stop it?
- 19:29No, the one rule I want to enact, and this isn't just this
- 19:31year, If the bullpens are going to empty, two of them have to
- 19:33go. You have to fight OK if you're
- 19:37going to leave the bullpen. You're going to run in.
- 19:39If you're going to run in from from outfield for absolutely
- 19:42nothing, just to linger at the back of the pack, 2 of you have
- 19:44to go. Because if you're going to delay
- 19:46the game, you may as well fight. You can designate who your
- 19:48fighter fighter is going to be before the series starts, but if
- 19:51you're leaving your bullpen, you got to go.
- 19:53I have the audio here from Nico Horner's objection.
- 19:56And can you hear Craig counsel too, right?
- 19:58I believe you can, yeah. This is from Marky.
- 20:01Is it hard to listen? Is it, is it, it's pretty low
- 20:03volume or yes. All right here, let's see what
- 20:05we can get. Let's see if it pops up here.
- 20:09Oh, wrong one. We'll try it again.
- 20:12This is on the right tab now. You're having a really bad day
- 20:29so far. That's it.
- 20:31And then Council comes in you. Kicked him out for that.
- 20:34He turns around, says you're having a really bad day so far.
- 20:38That's it. And he gets run, you know?
- 20:41And this was a a relatively new umpire.
- 20:44I I think Jim Deshay's who said that in the broadcast yesterday
- 20:48he was working with Alex Cohen Boo Boo Xiaomi did Saturday's
- 20:51game. And then gone on Sunday and.
- 20:53Then gone on Sunday so. For Sunday Night Baseball.
- 20:55I wonder. I should have gone out to the
- 20:57car and turned it on. Two weeks ago.
- 20:58I did, and they were covering NBA, so they didn't carry ESPN.
- 21:02It's really bothering you? It is bothering me 'cause it's
- 21:06just not the same without my guy Boog working with the Shane.
- 21:09The Shay's not have any fun with Cohen.
- 21:12He's not. I can tell you crack me up.
- 21:16Scott Dockerman coming up, we'll talk to Doc about the house
- 21:18settlement, etcetera. What does this mean for Iowa?
- 21:20What does this mean for Iowa State?
- 21:23We're going to do more on that on tomorrow's program.
- 21:26We will get to that. You know tomorrow we'll try and
- 21:29get Bloom in here, try and get Heinrichs in here.
- 21:31How's I? We're going to handle it.
- 21:33I saw that Beth Getz put out a press release earlier today.
- 21:37They're going to come up with a new fundraising mechanism.
- 21:41They call it flight funds now. Is that instead of Heinrich?
- 21:45Do you know? No, that is a disjunction, yeah.
- 21:47Okay, so you can send your money to Brad Heinrich or you can send
- 21:51it to Flight funds. So yeah, the Swarm Collective
- 21:54will still be working with both nonprofit agencies and people
- 21:56that are interested on having them be at a commercial doing
- 21:59those kind of things. And that I would imagine is what
- 22:01Bloom is going to be doing with the we will making these people
- 22:04available to go out to do events, represent Iowa State.
- 22:07We should get Bloom tomorrow. We should.
- 22:09Get both tomorrow. Yeah, absolutely.
- 22:10All right, let's get Mike in Waterloo, then we'll hear from
- 22:12Scott Docman. He covers Iowa.
- 22:13He covers college football for The Athletic.
- 22:16Hello, Mike. Thanks for being patient.
- 22:18How are you? Oh, pretty good.
- 22:19You know, you guys got to quit whining about the Cubs.
- 22:22The team to watch is a. Lot.
- 22:24Come on. Come on, MM, nobody cares.
- 22:28Partner, what do you say? We'd get swept three straight by
- 22:32Kansas City, 1-2 out of three. That Elko at first base reminds
- 22:37me of young Mark McGuire and the guy that let the ball hit his
- 22:41head. He's got the third or fourth
- 22:43best in the last two months on base percentage.
- 22:46They've got some guys, they're better than we thought and.
- 22:49They brought up another catcher, the left-handed catcher.
- 22:52Oh, they did. Shortstop and AAA, they sent him
- 22:55back to Arizona. He's tearing the ball off the
- 22:57cover. 6 foot 4, get it? 450 foot home runs.
- 23:02The only problem with the team, you've got a center, that
- 23:05fielder that plays like he doesn't care, like Willie Bayes
- 23:08and hits like Ozzy. Ganz So that's the only problem
- 23:11for a team that's 22 and 44, if they change that, Mike, look
- 23:14out. So what I'm telling you, watch
- 23:17out Tran they. Suck.
- 23:18They're awful. MMM, enough.
- 23:21They're terrible. They're terrible.
- 23:22Put a whooping on. Those wins, Mike, they're bad.
- 23:25They're a bad baseball team. We're not going to sit here.
- 23:28No, no, no. Mike, listen, listen.
- 23:29Listen, Mike. Listen, Michael, you're done.
- 23:34Listen, They are a bad baseball. Team, they're better than last
- 23:38year. OK, they're better.
- 23:41Mike is due. Mike, they are a bad baseball
- 23:44team. We are not going to sit here on
- 23:46the Iowa Sports Radio Network and talk about a bad baseball
- 23:49team. We're not going to do that,
- 23:51Mike. We will give them their due.
- 23:52We'll give you a moment, but we're not going to linger on a
- 23:55team that's 22 and 44. Is that fair?
- 23:58No, no, because they're making progress.
- 24:01You got to get. There.
- 24:01MMMMMMM. Here's another thing.
- 24:05Go Mike. You're not listening.
- 24:07Mike, this is Miller and Condon. It's not Mike and Miller.
- 24:10OK, If you do, see if you could come to that together right now.
- 24:13It's not. You need to listen if you're
- 24:15going to call into the program. And what I'm telling you is the
- 24:18White Sox are, at best, the fourth most popular team in the
- 24:22state of Iowa. This is the Iowa Sports Radio
- 24:24Network. The Cubs are #1.
- 24:26Cardinals 2, Twins 3. Rows 4. 5th, 5th and maybe the
- 24:30Brewers, depending on our friends up in northeast Iowa,
- 24:32might be ahead of the White Sox. So, Mike, we also have to do a
- 24:35service to our listeners. Try back another time.
- 24:39There he goes. 12:25 We'll get Scott Dockerman and he's You
- 24:42don't like the White Sox, I take it?
- 24:44No, I hate the White Sox. I would never would have
- 24:46guessed. Now they're look at so I want to
- 24:48learn more about the left-handed catcher he catches with his
- 24:51right hand. Is that what Mike was trying?
- 24:53To say probably a left-handed swinging catcher is what I'd
- 24:56anticipate. Yeah, I mean, those are AJ
- 24:58Burzynski was that guy. There's no those are Diamond
- 25:01Dozen. I thought he, I thought Mike
- 25:02Many actually is a left-handed catcher.
- 25:06You don't see any of those. No, you do that.
- 25:08We'll take your time out Miller and Cond and Iowa Sports Radio
- 25:11Network. We're back with Scott Dockerman
- 25:12next. I'm Mary Condon, welcome back
- 25:22just past 1230 on a Monday, Matt Snyder coming off.
- 25:26He kicks off hour number two for you baseball fans in the
- 25:29listening audience. Major League Baseball
- 25:31conversation with Snyder from CBSSports.com.
- 25:34Scott Dockerman covers college football at The Athletic.
- 25:37Of course, got a finger on the Hawkeye pulse as well.
- 25:40Just Scott Pioli was hired today.
- 25:42So he's been around since the fall according to the press
- 25:45release and that was my take away right before I saw Doc
- 25:48tweeted out he beat me to the punch.
- 25:50But that was an eye opener. It was well decorated.
- 25:54I think he got fired after they went 2 and 14 or something.
- 25:59God, those were the days in Kansas City.
- 26:02Hello, Scott Dockerman, Trenton, Kent.
- 26:04How are you? You know what I'm doing Well, I,
- 26:08I mean it just to reiterate kind of what you said there about
- 26:11Scott, Of course, yes, he did not have a decorated tenure in,
- 26:14in Kansas City, but you know, hired him as a consultant is
- 26:18really impactful for Iowa in this new era because you've got
- 26:23a guy who's who's had, you know, extensive experience at multiple
- 26:26places in the NFL. He worked first worked with Kirk
- 26:29in Cleveland and Baltimore back in the 90s has I remember
- 26:33talking to Scott and Saint Joseph when he was the GM of the
- 26:38Chiefs and he said he wanted to hire Kirk.
- 26:40That was his guy. That's.
- 26:41Really. And as his coach, so they are
- 26:44very close. I've seen Scott at some of their
- 26:46practices and in the building. So he knows fairly intimately
- 26:52Iowa football or knows enough of it to really help the Hawkeyes
- 26:56across the board. But specifically in football, I
- 26:59kind of managed the the new era. So that's fascinating to me
- 27:03because I'm trying to connect some dots, because when Paoli
- 27:06took the GM, became GM of the Chiefs, he fired Herm Edwards.
- 27:11And I can't remember who he hired, Todd Haley.
- 27:15Todd Haley? That's exactly right.
- 27:17So would that have been ferrets if Peoli would have got his way,
- 27:20do you think? Yeah, it would have been.
- 27:22Wow. Yeah.
- 27:23He thinks the world occurred. I mean, like, you know, just
- 27:27puts him on a pedestal. So he was, I, I talked to him
- 27:30there and, and even his PR people are trying to shoo him
- 27:33away and he said, no, I wanted to talk about Kirk and beat him
- 27:36at practice, talked to him briefly a few times.
- 27:39So yeah, he's, he and Kirk are pretty tight.
- 27:42And Brian worked for him too in, in New England.
- 27:45So, you know they they all have a pretty close relationship.
- 27:48Yeah, Peoli was there for the beginning of the Tom Brady, Bill
- 27:52Belichick run, correct? That's when he was there.
- 27:55Yeah, yeah, he was ground floor and you know, worked his way up
- 27:58to to what vice president and of player personnel.
- 28:02He was kind of the machine there.
- 28:04He was a three time executive of the year in the NFL.
- 28:06So he's he's certainly had a a good role there when New England
- 28:11and that he parlayed that just to kind of think branch away get
- 28:14away from the Belichick era for a little bit.
- 28:17Didn't quite work out obviously in Kansas City and, and and you
- 28:21know, here's here's one thing, you know, it's completely
- 28:24different era, but you know, when they did have the
- 28:27opportunity to get a number one overall pick, there was no
- 28:30quarterback there for him to take.
- 28:32Is that Fisher's? Yeah, when they got and Eric
- 28:36Fisher was a quality player, but he certainly wasn't a Hall of
- 28:40Famer, which is what you're trying to get with your number
- 28:42one pick overall. That's true.
- 28:44Todd Haley to Romeo Cornell, and that's.
- 28:46Where it went, huh? That was.
- 28:47The end of Peoli in Kansas City with those two hires, what could
- 28:51have been and boy, it would have been different for Iowa
- 28:53football. Hey, Doc, we wanted to talk a
- 28:55lot about the house settlement, what that kind of means before
- 28:58we get into the macro. And Ken and I got a bunch of
- 29:00question on that. Let's go micro what what it
- 29:02means to Iowa and we can even throw Iowa State into the
- 29:05conversation. What does this mean?
- 29:07Did anything change with what came down on Friday night for
- 29:11Iowa and Iowa State from what we've talked about here the last
- 29:13couple of months? You know, it's, it's now
- 29:18official, which I mean, I think everybody and I've talked to
- 29:21other a DS around the country recently that everybody's just
- 29:24exhaling now. Like finally something some
- 29:28structure. We've been wanting this for a
- 29:30while. It's been put on hold to any
- 29:32kind of we're getting worried about it now.
- 29:34It's it's there. So now they can execute the
- 29:37strategy that they planned for. I know Iowa's had one a long
- 29:39time under Beth Getz. I assume you know, Jamie
- 29:42Pollard's the same way at Iowa State, excellent 80s.
- 29:46So they you know, for for Iowa in the short term, you know, now
- 29:51they can just kind of move forward with their plan.
- 29:53I mean, I think what we're, you know, we're going to I I would
- 29:57say is how does the money flow from fans to differently, you
- 30:03know, before it was to the the swarm collective and will people
- 30:07still donate to swarm because it's going to need to be there.
- 30:11You know, this isn't just a magic formula where, oh, OK, now
- 30:14it all goes to the athletic department.
- 30:15The athletic department could spend it on the athletes and,
- 30:18and all as well. I mean, it really is incumbent
- 30:22to raise money on the side because you're going to need
- 30:24that to get that quarterback, point guard, whatever.
- 30:28So that to me is going to be, you know, pretty fascinating
- 30:33going forward. What about Olympic sports, Doc?
- 30:36What does this mean for them? Are are they in jeopardy or, or,
- 30:39or are some sports in jeopardy? Or is that kind of difficult to
- 30:43answer because every school's going to do things differently?
- 30:46Or can they? Every school will be able to do
- 30:50things differently. And I think this is going to be
- 30:53really another interesting thing to watch is which sports kind of
- 30:58rise or maintain and which ones baseball at different
- 31:01institutions, not just Iowa. And the example that I've been
- 31:05that I've given for a while is take women's basketball at Iowa.
- 31:09It's very important. Iowa needs it to be good.
- 31:12It is good and it needs to stay good.
- 31:14And that's something that you're not going to start, you know,
- 31:17try to, you know, spread around the well, you're going to have
- 31:20to focus on a program that you want to be excellent to be
- 31:24there. However, when you look at, say,
- 31:26volleyball, Iowa is a is a bottom feeder in the best league
- 31:30in the country. And it's going to be hard to
- 31:32even get to the mid level in that league.
- 31:35Now that can change over. So you're not going to, you
- 31:38know, you're, you're not going to provide them with outstanding
- 31:41resources when you've got to feed women's basketball and
- 31:44other sports. Now that could change over time.
- 31:46You know, I mean, if, if there's a way where they get better very
- 31:49quickly and well, maybe they need to execute a different
- 31:52strategy. But then you look at A at a
- 31:53competitor, you know, their, their sister program, frankly,
- 31:56is Wisconsin and women's basketball has lost what, 31
- 32:01straight games to Iowa. They're bottom feeder in the big
- 32:0410 in basketball, but they are one of the elite programs in, in
- 32:07volleyball. They're probably looking at it
- 32:09as similar trajectory where you want to help out women's
- 32:12basketball, but you've got to, you have to be good in
- 32:15volleyball. So I, I think you're going to
- 32:17see more, more of that throughout like institutions to
- 32:22where some schools are going to be able to pay a lot for certain
- 32:26sports. Some schools are just going to
- 32:27say just wear the jersey and try your best.
- 32:30And I think, you know, and, and one sport, and I have brought it
- 32:34up before that I've been concerned about and I'm a little
- 32:37less so now after the after the region stuff is baseball,
- 32:41because that's a sport that doesn't cost a lot of money.
- 32:44And we've seen Wisconsin and Iowa State, Northern Iowa have
- 32:48eliminated it. So I think in this situation
- 32:51you, you've got to be cognizant that, you know, can baseball
- 32:54flourish? And I think it now, now that
- 32:57they're going to invest 5.8 million in a in a renovation, I
- 32:59think they're going to give it its best shot.
- 33:02But in 10 years down the road, that remains to be seen.
- 33:05Doc, as you've mentioned, you've fanned out and you're talking to
- 33:08a lot more people outside of Iowa as your role is growing
- 33:10over there at The Athletic and expand it out.
- 33:13Wrestling, you know the importance in this state.
- 33:16Wrestling's not going to go away at the University of Iowa as
- 33:18long as the NCAA is still having a championship event for it.
- 33:21But how many teams are they going to be competing with?
- 33:23You know, you look at a sport like men's gymnastics, what is
- 33:25there 20 programs at the D1 level?
- 33:28Could college wrestling? That's got to be on the chopping
- 33:30block, I would think for a lot of athletic departments, not at
- 33:33Iowa, not at Iowa State, but a lot of them out there.
- 33:35You're looking to cut wrestling. Could it be well finished in the
- 33:38top 20? Hope you do because there's only
- 33:40going to be 20 teams actually wrestling.
- 33:43Sure. And and that's something that
- 33:45that we all have to watch for. And I know it's something that
- 33:48everybody's gonna wrestle with. I mean, right now every, you
- 33:51know, everybody's saying, OK, we've got our money.
- 33:53We're gonna continue to maintain this.
- 33:54But as you go where you, where you look at wrestling and it may
- 33:58cost you $2,000,000 and say, you know what, we'd be better off if
- 34:02we were to, to move that money into the football or, or even
- 34:05another Olympic sport. That's, that's got, you know,
- 34:08more potential. I mean, if you're Indiana and
- 34:11you think, well, we can move that into soccer where we're
- 34:13really good, or Minnesota into ice hockey or, you know, now
- 34:18Minnesota would probably be one that would keep it.
- 34:20But, but, but there are a lot of schools, I, I would say outside
- 34:24of the three or four in the Big 10 that you wonder just, you
- 34:27know, does this make sense for Michigan State, for Purdue, for
- 34:31Indiana and Northwestern? And and so I think it bears
- 34:35watching and it used to be because of Title 9 even things
- 34:39out, but now it's all strictly financial because you want to be
- 34:43good in the sports you're supposed to be good at in Iowa,
- 34:45wrestling is is very, very important.
- 34:48It's not going anywhere. But at again, if you're Indiana,
- 34:53soccer is really important. You win national titles in
- 34:56soccer. Maybe it maybe when you look
- 34:58down the road, it's like or Maryland, you know, or someplace
- 35:01like that. It's like let's, let's invest in
- 35:03these sports and, and sorry, we, we just can't do it anymore in
- 35:07wrestling. Yeah, so many schools good at
- 35:09lacrosse. Big 10 is terrific at hockey.
- 35:12Big East Hockey E they're big. You wonder what that's going to
- 35:16do. So you mentioned Title 9.
- 35:17What does this do to Title 9 Doc?
- 35:20Well, with the, with the roster limits, it's forced schools to
- 35:25actually boost more scholarships towards women's sports because
- 35:30in, in effect, you could kind of work around it without the
- 35:34scholarships because you have the numbers and a lot of them
- 35:37did that with rowing, where you, it was an equivalency sport.
- 35:41You could have 20 scholarships and then voila, here's the, you
- 35:46know, 120 play athletes on your team and you could spread it
- 35:49out. And that's, that's kind of how
- 35:51you skirt it around. Well, now with roster limits,
- 35:53you can't do that. And you're going to have to
- 35:54provide that type of number of scholarships.
- 35:56And the one thing with universities is scholarships
- 36:00have to be be proportionate to your male, female student ratio.
- 36:04So I think in Iowa it's maybe 54% female.
- 36:07So you have to have that type of number on the scholarship front.
- 36:10So they, they've been in the position of having to add about
- 36:1320 women's scholarships going into next year.
- 36:16And, and so that's, that's part of it there.
- 36:19And you know, they're, they're trying to cut some costs.
- 36:22I know there have been a few layoffs, not very many, but
- 36:24there have been a few. They're mostly trying to do that
- 36:27with attrition in in the athletic department, neither
- 36:32people leaving or retiring and not filling their roles.
- 36:35But it's still, it's going to be a costly prop, a costly
- 36:39proposition for Iowa and of course at Iowa State.
- 36:42So Next up is what another lawsuit's going to be coming?
- 36:47How does this end? Is it the athletes become
- 36:50employees? Is that kind of the simplest end
- 36:52game to all of this? That would be one that you would
- 36:57look at in the far distant future as something that could
- 36:59happen, you know, maybe in the far distant future, I mean like
- 37:032 years, you know, you just don't know.
- 37:06I mean, you know, things change so quickly that that that could
- 37:09be the end all now. You know, of course they don't
- 37:11want to provide they they provide athletes with a lot of
- 37:14different things. But but employment status does
- 37:17kind of change the dynamic and that's what they've been trying
- 37:19to avoid. I'm not so sure I've heard it
- 37:21both ways. I'm not so sure that the
- 37:23athletes would want to be officially employees, but but
- 37:26that that being said, you know, I think they're going to look
- 37:30for protections through Congress now that this settlement is in.
- 37:34They can start to go to congressional representatives
- 37:39and ask for antitrust exemption to avoid some of the lawsuits,
- 37:44to maybe be able to implement some things that they wouldn't
- 37:47be able to otherwise. So that's probably the next
- 37:51step. But yeah, there's going to be
- 37:52lawsuits. There always is.
- 37:53And so lawyers are going to keep busy.
- 37:57For The Athletic, what's going to keep you busy this week, doc?
- 37:59What can we look forward to? Yeah, I've got a story.
- 38:03We've kind of been doing this 25 for 25 and tomorrow is my 25 off
- 38:08field stories over the last 25 years.
- 38:12And and it's it's pretty exhausting.
- 38:14There's a lot of stuff in there, as you can imagine, that not
- 38:18just games, but people and, and situations and issues that have
- 38:23changed the face of college athletics over the last 25
- 38:26years. So that goes tomorrow.
- 38:27And then I've got a couple other projects that I'm really knee
- 38:30deep in so far. So, yeah, my, my summer is not
- 38:35just like it used to be back, you know, when my older
- 38:38colleagues were around in the 90s and they could just take the
- 38:40summer off. Don't.
- 38:41Do that. Anymore.
- 38:42So is is Belichick part of it? Is Dion part of it?
- 38:46Those would be two that would be on my pop into my head as far as
- 38:4925. Certainly Dion is, yeah.
- 38:53I don't. I haven't put Belichick on there
- 38:55yet because I don't. But who knows, maybe by end of
- 38:58this year, maybe he will be. But you know, you've got all
- 39:00these issues related to, say, the house settlement, open
- 39:03transfer portal. You know, one I will say that I
- 39:07left off was Sandusky. How you how do you rate a
- 39:13scandal of that proportion with that against the NCAA video
- 39:19game? You know, so it just doesn't, I
- 39:22mean that that's, I don't even want to use a comparison because
- 39:25it sounds crass, but that that's just what you can't do.
- 39:28So anyway, yeah, that comes out tomorrow and it should be.
- 39:31I hope people enjoy it. Well, we will certainly look
- 39:34forward to it. Thank you, Scott Dockerman.
- 39:35We'll talk to you next week. Appreciate it doc.
- 39:37All right, Thanks. Have a good day.
- 39:38Guys, good to talk to you. Scott Dockerman from The
- 39:40Athletic as we try and educate ourselves on the House
- 39:43settlement. Take your time out, come back,
- 39:44finish up the hour, Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 39:47Network. Hi Miller and Condon, welcome
- 39:51back. Iowa Sports Radio Network U.S.
- 39:53Open week coming up this week we'll get Matt Rudy in here, a
- 39:56guy to talk about the US Open. Oakmont is the scene.
- 40:01Speculation is if you can. If you can break par, you got a
- 40:07chance to win this thing. That's what the winning score
- 40:10they're think is going to be. 1 under one over even par.
- 40:14A lot of golfers would sign for that right now, apparently.
- 40:16And you know, I love that part of it.
- 40:18I love when we have AUS Open like this.
- 40:21I know they trick it up. I know it's not fair, but for
- 40:24one tournament, it's OK. I'm with you.
- 40:26I'm OK with it. It's is it not real golf?
- 40:29Do you actually pull out the best golfer in the field?
- 40:33Maybe not, but for 1/4 day tournament a year I'm OK with it
- 40:40being tricky, being unfair being so.
- 40:41There's not a lot of water on this course, but there's a lot
- 40:45of bunkers and the rough is unforgiving.
- 40:47Is is is if I got it right? The rough that I saw a week ago
- 40:52and they are not cutting it from that point, right was ridiculous
- 40:55really we're talking so. If you stand and you just drop
- 40:58your ball, you lose it if. You have ankle socks on, the
- 41:01grass is going to be over your ankle.
- 41:03Socks so you better hit the fairways so you better so so you
- 41:07don't have to hit it long is that what you're saying too?
- 41:09So we. Let's see U.S.
- 41:09Open. You probably still got to hit a
- 41:11long too. Oh.
- 41:11It's gonna be fascinating. Hour 2 coming up next.
- 41:14Matt Snyder kicks it off CBSSports.com.
- 41:16Alec Bussey still to come. It's the Iowa Sport Radio
- 41:19Network.
