- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Dirty Rush, The Truth about Sorority Life with
- 0:04Speaker 1: your hosts me Gia, Judaice, Daisy.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Kent, and Jennifer Kessler. Welcome back to another episode of
- 0:14Speaker 2: Dirty Rush. I'm Shelby and today is another producer hosted episode.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Today we are talking all about joining a sorority for
- 0:22Speaker 2: the right reasons or so we think, let's jump right in.
- 0:27Speaker 2: So today we're actually going to be talking about a
- 0:29Speaker 2: post we saw on Instagram that's by at Sorority Standards.
- 0:34Speaker 2: They posted the top ten reasons women joined sororities. The
- 0:39Speaker 2: source is from the National Panhalenic Conference Sorority Belonging, Diversity,
- 0:45Speaker 2: well Being and Joining Survey twenty twenty two to twenty
- 0:48Speaker 2: twenty three and a qualitative study of why women join
- 0:52Speaker 2: panalytic organizations. So we're going to discuss if we all
- 0:56Speaker 2: agree or if we disagree with these ten reasons why
- 1:00Speaker 2: women joined swarties. Before we jump in, can you guys
- 1:04Speaker 2: like tell me a little bit about why you joined
- 1:07Speaker 2: a sorority without knowing the ten reasons yet when you
- 1:10Speaker 2: went into a sorority, maybe give me like the top
- 1:12Speaker 2: three two to three reasons why it was like important
- 1:14Speaker 2: for you to join Creek life.
- 1:17Speaker 1: For me, this might be like I don't know a
- 1:20Speaker 1: nicheuer thing for some groups. But so I rushed my
- 1:24Speaker 1: sophomore year, and I'm an athlete at my school. Anyone
- 1:28Speaker 1: who's an athlete just knows that athlete culture is just
- 1:31Speaker 1: so tight knit and it's very hard to get out of.
- 1:35Speaker 1: And especially going to like a super large school too,
- 1:37Speaker 1: it kind of just sometimes feel like a school within
- 1:39Speaker 1: a school. So for me, and like I come from
- 1:42Speaker 1: a very very small team. We only have about like
- 1:45Speaker 1: twenty girls and guys. So like I kind of had
- 1:48Speaker 1: a huge reflection sophomore year, like going into my sophomore
- 1:52Speaker 1: year that like I just I needed to like meet
- 1:54Speaker 1: more people. I needed to branch out more, Like I
- 1:56Speaker 1: needed to have kind of a group of friends who
- 2:00Speaker 1: so kind of gave me like something different compared to
- 2:03Speaker 1: just like athlete culture. And I felt like kind of
- 2:06Speaker 1: rush was like the easiest thing to kind of like
- 2:09Speaker 1: jump into, especially if you go to like a super
- 2:11Speaker 1: large public school, Like it's hard meeting friends just in
- 2:14Speaker 1: like classes or I don't know, just walking around. So
- 2:17Speaker 1: like I felt like rush was definitely like the best
- 2:19Speaker 1: way to see, like, let's see if I can fit
- 2:21Speaker 1: in anywhere and like kind of going through it. Like
- 2:25Speaker 1: I think the one thing that like really helped me decide,
- 2:28Speaker 1: especially like choosing a house, was just like who can
- 2:30Speaker 1: I really see myself like being friends with outside of
- 2:34Speaker 1: just like a surface level can like like relationships of
- 2:38Speaker 1: like who are these like who are going to be
- 2:39Speaker 1: the people who like I'm still friends with after college,
- 2:41Speaker 1: Who are gonna be the people that I want to
- 2:43Speaker 1: like hang out with mornings and nights, et cetera, and
- 2:47Speaker 1: also like have fun like living in a house too,
- 2:49Speaker 1: and like see if that's something that like I'd ever
- 2:52Speaker 1: really want to experience as well. So kind of just
- 2:55Speaker 1: like it's like more of a branching out into a
- 2:57Speaker 1: different community in a different space when you go to
- 2:59Speaker 1: like a huge.
- 3:00Speaker 3: I completely agree with everything you said, and for me,
- 3:03Speaker 3: one of the biggest reasons why I joined because SECU
- 3:07Speaker 3: is just such a big school and coming as a freshman,
- 3:10Speaker 3: I feel like it's always so so overwhelming, and like
- 3:12Speaker 3: I knew I wanted to make it feel smaller by
- 3:15Speaker 3: kind of finding a community where like people genuinely like
- 3:18Speaker 3: knew me, cared about me, and like having those long
- 3:20Speaker 3: lasting friendships like you said, as well as just like
- 3:23Speaker 3: having that connection like outside of school, like going to
- 3:25Speaker 3: classes every day. And I felt like I also now
- 3:29Speaker 3: like after joining a stority, I felt like I could
- 3:30Speaker 3: walk across campus and like recognize so many familiar faces
- 3:34Speaker 3: instead of just being like any other student.
- 3:36Speaker 4: So I really like that.
- 3:38Speaker 3: I also felt like being in a stority like would
- 3:40Speaker 3: push me out of my comfort zone and like also
- 3:42Speaker 3: like forced me to go out to like all the
- 3:43Speaker 3: pre parties in exchanges and there's always something to look
- 3:46Speaker 3: forward to each week and like our themed parties and
- 3:48Speaker 3: all that stuff. And then also just kind of like
- 3:51Speaker 3: be inspired by other people. I feel like a lot
- 3:53Speaker 3: of my friends later on, like throughout college took on
- 3:57Speaker 3: a minor and I was like maybe I will. And
- 3:59Speaker 3: then also like join like kind of helped me like
- 4:01Speaker 3: expand and want to go abroad. So I feel like
- 4:03Speaker 3: starting off, like just joining it leads you to so
- 4:06Speaker 3: many different experiences and like there's so many different people
- 4:09Speaker 3: like that want to do different things, and it kind
- 4:11Speaker 3: of inspires you to kind of step by your comfort
- 4:14Speaker 3: zone totally.
- 4:15Speaker 2: I feel like I was going to school in the
- 4:18Speaker 2: South from California, and I was like really excited for
- 4:22Speaker 2: like that whole recruitment process that like I had heard
- 4:25Speaker 2: was such a big deal, so I just wanted to
- 4:28Speaker 2: be a part of the process. I always felt like
- 4:30Speaker 2: I was a social butterfly, so I like wasn't like
- 4:33Speaker 2: really fearful of the process, but I didn't really know
- 4:37Speaker 2: what to expect because my mom wasn't in a swarty.
- 4:39Speaker 2: But I think, just like like everyone always says, making friends,
- 4:43Speaker 2: being involved in something, I feel like in college, a
- 4:46Speaker 2: swarty gives you a big sense of purpose because sometimes
- 4:48Speaker 2: with like school and like going out and partying like
- 4:51Speaker 2: kind of can't feel like a cycle and it feels
- 4:54Speaker 2: like every day is kind of the same at some point,
- 4:56Speaker 2: and I feel like a swarty like especially having the
- 4:58Speaker 2: opportunity to like get involved with whatever like that is
- 5:01Speaker 2: like you can literally be running the Instagram if you're
- 5:03Speaker 2: into that, or you could be the president. Like there's
- 5:05Speaker 2: so many different like ranges of things to be involved in,
- 5:08Speaker 2: like lead a position and people would like literally just
- 5:09Speaker 2: get birthday gifts for everyone, Like there's so many positions
- 5:12Speaker 2: you could do anything. And I feel like having that
- 5:14Speaker 2: sense of purpose outside of like school and just like
- 5:17Speaker 2: partying is like so important and those would probably be mine,
- 5:23Speaker 2: I think yeah, and just making friends I think, oh,
- 5:27Speaker 2: also another big one at the sorties, Like I loved
- 5:29Speaker 2: having upperclassmen friends like to look up to, and like
- 5:33Speaker 2: I made so many older friends, like all me and
- 5:35Speaker 2: my friends and my PCs bigs were all very close
- 5:37Speaker 2: to They'd invite us to do so much stuff, and
- 5:39Speaker 2: like having that relationship with older girls, and like for
- 5:42Speaker 2: me older sisters was like huge when I was a freshman,
- 5:45Speaker 2: because I feel like I really needed that guidance at
- 5:47Speaker 2: like a new school, being so far away from home.
- 5:49Speaker 2: It was like so important to me. So I feel
- 5:51Speaker 2: like all those like older sisters and the sorority family
- 5:54Speaker 2: was like a really big reason I wanted to join.
- 5:57Speaker 5: I think for me, I'm I was in a dual
- 5:59Speaker 5: degree program, so I spent my first two years of
- 6:01Speaker 5: college abroad, and I am from California. So when I
- 6:05Speaker 5: was able to come back to California, I knew I
- 6:07Speaker 5: wanted to have that more traditional, like true American college experience.
- 6:11Speaker 4: And my sister was in a sorority and that was.
- 6:13Speaker 5: A huge pivotal part of her four year experience, and
- 6:16Speaker 5: so I kind of always had even when I was abroad.
- 6:18Speaker 5: But when I got back, I wanted to really like
- 6:21Speaker 5: take full advantage and just try it. And so I
- 6:24Speaker 5: think for me, it was really about being able to
- 6:27Speaker 5: like mold my college experience, to have two completely different
- 6:32Speaker 5: like two years that were one way and two years
- 6:34Speaker 5: that were another. And I wanted to like allow myself
- 6:38Speaker 5: just to try it, just to see if it would
- 6:39Speaker 5: be something that I liked. And I had no hesitations
- 6:42Speaker 5: doing it even as a junior, and I just felt
- 6:46Speaker 5: really like supported throughout the entire experience, and I knew
- 6:49Speaker 5: like basically on day one that it was something that
- 6:51Speaker 5: I was going to really enjoy. And just meeting everyone
- 6:55Speaker 5: kind of similar to what everyone has said, just the
- 6:57Speaker 5: opportunity to meet so many people. And I went to
- 7:00Speaker 5: a school with a really large underclass, a really large
- 7:04Speaker 5: undergraduate population, and I wanted a wait to make my
- 7:07Speaker 5: school feel smaller. So Greek life was just like one
- 7:09Speaker 5: of the easier ways to do that totally.
- 7:12Speaker 6: Do you guys feel like from talking to friends and
- 7:14Speaker 6: like hearing from other people that people join sororities for
- 7:17Speaker 6: like the wrong reasons sometimes or do you think that
- 7:20Speaker 6: people go in with like the right reasons usually?
- 7:23Speaker 1: I think it kind of depends, like your school at least,
- 7:28Speaker 1: like I know, like it's such a huge thing with
- 7:30Speaker 1: like the Southern schools of like if I don't get
- 7:32Speaker 1: a sorority, like my college life is over with and
- 7:35Speaker 1: like that definitely shouldn't ever be the case.
- 7:39Speaker 2: But I don't.
- 7:39Speaker 1: I mean, I think it kind of depends on like
- 7:42Speaker 1: if your intentions are to be part of a top
- 7:45Speaker 1: house or like you think that it's gonna like get
- 7:47Speaker 1: you into all the frat parties and gonna get you
- 7:50Speaker 1: like little I don't know, social media like g limb Spotlight,
- 7:53Speaker 1: Like you shouldn't do it just to have like the
- 7:56Speaker 1: sorority name in your Instagram bio and like those little
- 7:59Speaker 1: like kind of other perks. I guess it should be
- 8:03Speaker 1: more about, like I'm joining because like I need to
- 8:06Speaker 1: know that I'm having like a close knit group of
- 8:09Speaker 1: friends who I can rely on and trust and are
- 8:12Speaker 1: gonna essentially help me get through college. College is not
- 8:15Speaker 1: fun all the time, and like you need the people
- 8:17Speaker 1: to back you up and be there for you through it,
- 8:19Speaker 1: and it's like you're not doing it for those reasons,
- 8:20Speaker 1: then I would look elsewhere totally.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Margot. I feel like SDS is so interesting to me
- 8:28Speaker 2: because the top housing is like huge there. Like when
- 8:31Speaker 2: I visited my friend, I had to like have a
- 8:34Speaker 2: fake pi fi like group me, that's what it was called,
- 8:37Speaker 2: group me account to like get in. Yeah, do you
- 8:40Speaker 2: feel like that makes people there like overly care about
- 8:43Speaker 2: the top house considering you can like only go into
- 8:45Speaker 2: parties if you're like in one of those top.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Houses on that kind of leads into what you just
- 8:50Speaker 3: asked too, because I feel like a lot of people
- 8:53Speaker 3: at SDC like, in order to have a social life
- 8:55Speaker 3: and like go out, you need a group me and
- 8:57Speaker 3: if it's not the top three houses and you kind
- 8:59Speaker 3: of you literally can't go out. And it's so interesting
- 9:02Speaker 3: because one of my best friends, so I went to
- 9:03Speaker 3: high school with, we went to SDSU together and we
- 9:06Speaker 3: went through recruitment and whatever, and she didn't get in
- 9:08Speaker 3: to any of the houses and honestly led us to
- 9:11Speaker 3: like not being friends because she could never go out
- 9:13Speaker 3: and we had her sign into our group meeting and stuff,
- 9:16Speaker 3: but literally like she just could never get in ever
- 9:18Speaker 3: because they like knew because we'd go to the pre
- 9:20Speaker 3: parties and then she'd like come late and it was
- 9:22Speaker 3: just like so bad. But honestly, to me, like that
- 9:24Speaker 3: was like one of the things that I hated the
- 9:26Speaker 3: most about my school because it just sucks, Like there
- 9:28Speaker 3: were so many great cool girls that like just didn't
- 9:31Speaker 3: get into sorties that either had a bad experience or
- 9:34Speaker 3: like you talked to the wrong person during work week
- 9:36Speaker 3: and like you just don't bomb with that person. It
- 9:37Speaker 3: kind of like messes up your whole experience. But it's
- 9:40Speaker 3: definitely extremely competitive and kind of a bummer, like if
- 9:44Speaker 3: you don't get into the top three, but a lot
- 9:46Speaker 3: of people to it SDSD, like didn't even rush and
- 9:49Speaker 3: still had a great time. So I feel like it's
- 9:51Speaker 3: not like do you orde to join authority, but you
- 9:53Speaker 3: definitely get perks, I mean going out and stuff to
- 9:57Speaker 3: the frats.
- 9:58Speaker 4: But yeah, I.
- 10:00Speaker 5: Think maybe it's just a little bit different in my
- 10:01Speaker 5: experience joining later, But I definitely when I graduated high
- 10:06Speaker 5: school and like saw all my friends like joining sororities,
- 10:09Speaker 5: I definitely think that the bigger consensus was joining just
- 10:12Speaker 5: to meet people. And then obviously there was a couple
- 10:15Speaker 5: of people that joined specifically because they wanted to be
- 10:18Speaker 5: like in that sort of status position and like have
- 10:21Speaker 5: like the name or like the Instagram bio change and
- 10:25Speaker 5: like they cared a lot more about that. But I
- 10:28Speaker 5: don't have a lot of friends who went to schools
- 10:30Speaker 5: where Greek life was like a make or break thing.
- 10:33Speaker 5: And I do have One of my best friends also
- 10:35Speaker 5: went to San Diego State, and she ended up joining
- 10:38Speaker 5: AKIO in her sophomore year only because all of her
- 10:41Speaker 5: friends were in it, and it just became this type
- 10:43Speaker 5: of thing where like she didn't she had.
- 10:45Speaker 4: She's like the least.
- 10:46Speaker 5: Sorority girl ever, but because she could never go out
- 10:48Speaker 5: with them, she did it just to like be able
- 10:51Speaker 5: to hang out with her friends that she had made
- 10:52Speaker 5: freshman year. She didn't care about like the parties themselves,
- 10:55Speaker 5: but just because she was never able to like go
- 10:57Speaker 5: to the same events as them. So I feel like
- 10:59Speaker 5: maybe for that reason, it's like it sucks that it
- 11:02Speaker 5: matters that much. But I think it is definitely like
- 11:04Speaker 5: a social like kind of like a social hierarchy thing,
- 11:07Speaker 5: especially when you're a freshman and you want to like
- 11:09Speaker 5: have that like thing in your bio.
- 11:11Speaker 1: I remember, like the party thing when I was in
- 11:15Speaker 1: a storty compared to when I was even at like
- 11:18Speaker 1: such a like non party school is just so dumb
- 11:22Speaker 1: of if you were in a sorority, like you technically
- 11:24Speaker 1: like weren't allowed into the frats or if you didn't
- 11:26Speaker 1: have like a bid, you weren't. And like my teammates
- 11:29Speaker 1: and I like we would literally go to the frats
- 11:31Speaker 1: and be like, we're athletes, Like we can't be in
- 11:33Speaker 1: Greek life. Can we just like please come in, like
- 11:35Speaker 1: we're not a liability or whatever, and like they would
- 11:38Speaker 1: go like down to the wire and like make a
- 11:40Speaker 1: show our roster photos like in line to get into
- 11:42Speaker 1: the frats and like be like I don't believe you,
- 11:44Speaker 1: Like I don't believe that this isn't you. And we're
- 11:45Speaker 1: like we literally go to Berkeley, like this is not
- 11:47Speaker 1: a party school, Like these frats are not that good,
- 11:50Speaker 1: and like the hierarchy that like gets made like through
- 11:53Speaker 1: all that like and through all those like rules and
- 11:55Speaker 1: everything is just like so ridiculous. But like at the
- 11:58Speaker 1: end of the day too, like if you're I have
- 12:00Speaker 1: plenty of friends, A lot of my friends are not
- 12:02Speaker 1: in Greek life, and it's just like it's not that
- 12:05Speaker 1: big of a deal. Like you'll be able to get
- 12:06Speaker 1: in places. There's bars too, and like you become an
- 12:09Speaker 1: upper classman, et cetera. But I do think that that's probably, yeah,
- 12:13Speaker 1: like one of the biggest Like don't just join just
- 12:15Speaker 1: so that you can get into the frats. They're not
- 12:17Speaker 1: that great all the time.
- 12:19Speaker 2: So that's like crazy because at my school it's like
- 12:21Speaker 2: not like that at all, Like literally anyone can go
- 12:23Speaker 2: to any party, and so I just have always thought
- 12:25Speaker 2: that that concepts like crazy. I mean, it's like fun
- 12:28Speaker 2: to say, like freshman, you're like what swere do you?
- 12:31Speaker 2: Were you? And if a guy was like asking is
- 12:32Speaker 2: like conversation, But like besides that, I feel like it
- 12:35Speaker 2: literally doesn't matter. Let's move on to the top ten
- 12:52Speaker 2: reasons according to this article. So I'm gonna go through
- 12:56Speaker 2: all ten and we can just kind of talk about
- 12:57Speaker 2: if we agree or disagree, and like how we would
- 13:00Speaker 2: rank that on like our one to ten ranking. I
- 13:04Speaker 2: feel like you guys are going to all agree that
- 13:06Speaker 2: this one goes at number one. But to find life
- 13:08Speaker 2: long friendships? Do you guys all like agree that that's
- 13:11Speaker 2: number one? I feel like that's like what we are
- 13:13Speaker 2: all just saying that's the main reason people join.
- 13:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I completely agree, Okay.
- 13:19Speaker 2: And then this next one is to feel a sense
- 13:22Speaker 2: of belonging, which I feel like was what I was
- 13:24Speaker 2: kind of talking about with like the purpose. I don't
- 13:26Speaker 2: know if this would go at number two for like
- 13:28Speaker 2: most people I know, but like I definitely think this
- 13:30Speaker 2: is important and like what I was talking about, and
- 13:35Speaker 2: like I'm curious what you guys have to say.
- 13:38Speaker 3: I feel like, honestly, it's a great number two. I
- 13:40Speaker 3: feel like it kind of like we all kind of
- 13:41Speaker 3: mentioned before, like it makes your school feel a lot smaller,
- 13:45Speaker 3: and it feels like you can have those friendships and
- 13:47Speaker 3: like people to relate to. So to me, I feel
- 13:49Speaker 3: like number it would be a great number two.
- 13:51Speaker 4: I think it's a great number two.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Knowing though that like just because you join a sorority,
- 13:56Speaker 1: like you still need to put in like what you
- 13:58Speaker 1: want to get out of it, especially like if you
- 14:01Speaker 1: need to like go out of your way to like
- 14:03Speaker 1: make friends and like be social and go to events
- 14:05Speaker 1: and go to those things, and like if you really
- 14:07Speaker 1: put yourself out there, then it does definitely I feel like,
- 14:09Speaker 1: give you like a really good purpose and like a
- 14:13Speaker 1: really good reason as to why you're in the house.
- 14:16Speaker 1: But yeah, like definitely like put yourself out there in
- 14:19Speaker 1: order to like make that a number two reason.
- 14:21Speaker 4: Totally Okay.
- 14:23Speaker 2: The next one is to grow as a leader. So
- 14:25Speaker 2: obviously I feel like this is important because I got
- 14:28Speaker 2: very involved in my a sorority. But do you guys
- 14:30Speaker 2: agree with this one?
- 14:31Speaker 5: I think this one's probably different for different personality types,
- 14:34Speaker 5: but I do think overall, generally speaking, by joining a sorority,
- 14:39Speaker 5: you do grow those sorts of traits about yourself without
- 14:42Speaker 5: even really realizing it. And I think it's just from
- 14:45Speaker 5: the fact of spending so much time with so many people,
- 14:48Speaker 5: you do kind of improve, like your social skills and
- 14:53Speaker 5: your communication skills, and therefore you improve your ability to
- 14:55Speaker 5: be a leader in like your friend groups or whether
- 14:57Speaker 5: it be like you joining zech so I think it's
- 14:59Speaker 5: my It could be like it's like a more unexpected
- 15:02Speaker 5: benefit of joining a sorority, unless like your main goal
- 15:05Speaker 5: is to be like in one of those exact positions.
- 15:08Speaker 5: But I do think I would definitely have that in
- 15:11Speaker 5: my top five, just because I feel like the ability
- 15:14Speaker 5: to be a leader not only in the sense of
- 15:17Speaker 5: like what it actually means to stand up in front
- 15:18Speaker 5: of a group and talk, but also what it means
- 15:20Speaker 5: to be a role model for people, and I feel
- 15:22Speaker 5: like that is a sort of role that I've been
- 15:25Speaker 5: able to have in that, Like I'm friends with a
- 15:27Speaker 5: lot of underclassmen through being in a sorority, and I've
- 15:29Speaker 5: been able to improve my ability to be like someone
- 15:31Speaker 5: that they look up to and someone that they ask
- 15:33Speaker 5: questions too. And that's been like probably one of my
- 15:36Speaker 5: favorite parts. So yeah, I would say probably that's like
- 15:38Speaker 5: my number two. Honestly for me, I.
- 15:41Speaker 3: Feel like, like Sabina said, it's kind of like to
- 15:43Speaker 3: each their own, but for me, I never was on
- 15:45Speaker 3: EXAC and I never like even have a little so
- 15:47Speaker 3: I never really felt like a leader in my sorority.
- 15:50Speaker 3: I feel like it was kind of like on my own,
- 15:52Speaker 3: but I definitely looked up to like my friends who
- 15:54Speaker 3: were the president, all the work that they put in
- 15:55Speaker 3: to like grow our chapter and like lead our chapter.
- 15:59Speaker 3: But to me, it being a leader like or being
- 16:01Speaker 3: on exec was never like my top choice or even
- 16:03Speaker 3: like wanting to do it. So not my top three,
- 16:08Speaker 3: but maybe my top like five or six.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Okay, I'm go into the next one. Number four is
- 16:14Speaker 2: to give back through philanthropy.
- 16:17Speaker 1: I definitely think that this needs to be much higher
- 16:20Speaker 1: up there. I would say that was probably like within
- 16:22Speaker 1: my top three especially when choosing a house, like really
- 16:26Speaker 1: like think about, like when you're going into philanthropy day,
- 16:28Speaker 1: like really think about like which one like you feel
- 16:32Speaker 1: like you can really like want to like embody and
- 16:34Speaker 1: represent and like give back to and like which one
- 16:37Speaker 1: you really resonate with, Like I know with Kapa, like
- 16:39Speaker 1: being mental health, that just like went across for so
- 16:42Speaker 1: many different people in so many different ways, and philanthropy
- 16:45Speaker 1: was definitely what sold me already on to join Kappa.
- 16:49Speaker 1: So yeah, like it's it may seem like something that
- 16:52Speaker 1: like you have to do, but like if you really
- 16:54Speaker 1: can resonate with it and want to give back in
- 16:57Speaker 1: that way, like it makes it so much more rewarding
- 16:59Speaker 1: and it's like some that's really great to like look
- 17:01Speaker 1: back on of just like bigger than I went out
- 17:04Speaker 1: and we did this and we did that. Like no,
- 17:06Speaker 1: like you guys like really made a charitable difference for
- 17:09Speaker 1: those four years that.
- 17:10Speaker 4: You were there. I agree.
- 17:12Speaker 5: I think at our school and specifically in my storty
- 17:15Speaker 5: in dg are planthropy of service for site and a
- 17:18Speaker 5: lot of the girls, I didn't because I had another
- 17:21Speaker 5: like volunteer hours that I was doing outside of my sutorty,
- 17:24Speaker 5: but a lot of the girls spent hours and hours
- 17:27Speaker 5: on end, like going to events where they were able
- 17:30Speaker 5: to help out people without people who are blind, and
- 17:34Speaker 5: like they benefited a lot from that, and it ended
- 17:38Speaker 5: up being something where I know a lot of the
- 17:39Speaker 5: girls that are older than me, once they graduated, they
- 17:42Speaker 5: actually continued to be a part of those organizations. So
- 17:45Speaker 5: I do think that there's definitely like an influence, a
- 17:48Speaker 5: really positive influence, especially on a local level, that the
- 17:51Speaker 5: girls were able to participate in totally.
- 17:54Speaker 2: So this next one I feel like is lower for
- 17:55Speaker 2: me just because I was so involved in my southrority specifically.
- 17:58Speaker 2: But number five is to become more involved on campus
- 18:02Speaker 2: like in general. So I just think this is different
- 18:04Speaker 2: for everyone. Like you were just saying you were like
- 18:07Speaker 2: super involved in out of your sorority organization, so this
- 18:10Speaker 2: one probably resonates with you more, But I think it
- 18:12Speaker 2: would more be in the sense of like connecting with
- 18:15Speaker 2: other people and your sworty and what they're evolved outside
- 18:17Speaker 2: of the sorority.
- 18:18Speaker 5: I think it definitely helped my ability to I don't know,
- 18:21Speaker 5: maybe again this is like one of those like subconscious things,
- 18:25Speaker 5: but like I think it definitely helped my confidence in
- 18:27Speaker 5: feeling like a part of the like student body on campus,
- 18:33Speaker 5: because I obviously, like I got to school late, I
- 18:35Speaker 5: didn't have those same like two extra years of creating
- 18:38Speaker 5: connections with other students that like, when I joined a sorority,
- 18:41Speaker 5: I felt way more confident in my own role on campus.
- 18:44Speaker 5: But I don't think that that was through like I
- 18:47Speaker 5: didn't join any other clubs or organizations other than being
- 18:49Speaker 5: in Greek life. But I do feel like, similar to
- 18:51Speaker 5: what Margot had mentioned earlier, of feeling like I could
- 18:54Speaker 5: walk on campus and recognize faces, that was definitely like
- 18:56Speaker 5: a huge part of things.
- 18:57Speaker 4: So maybe that kind of like answers that a little bit,
- 19:01Speaker 4: But I.
- 19:02Speaker 5: Don't think it made a I don't think it necessarily
- 19:05Speaker 5: influenced my ability to like feel more confident in like
- 19:08Speaker 5: joining other clubs, but maybe just in like feeling like
- 19:12Speaker 5: I was more like a Berkeley student.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Totally Okay. The next one is like, I don't agree
- 19:32Speaker 2: with this one, but to build a professional network. I
- 19:34Speaker 2: didn't join my sorority to build a professional network, but
- 19:37Speaker 2: I'm curious if you guys felt like that in any way.
- 19:41Speaker 3: I definitely enjoin it to build a professional network. But
- 19:45Speaker 3: I feel like there's so many smart, amazing girls that
- 19:48Speaker 3: are in my chapter that have done like amazing things
- 19:50Speaker 3: now postgrad that I feel like I could message or
- 19:53Speaker 3: like ask them how they're doing it their job. And
- 19:55Speaker 3: I feel like to like looking at the upper class
- 19:57Speaker 3: and like coming in freshman year and like not really
- 20:00Speaker 3: knowing and like seeing where they're going, and like kind
- 20:02Speaker 3: of like messaging people I feel like will always be
- 20:04Speaker 3: super beneficial as well too, like if you're like trying
- 20:07Speaker 3: to get a minor and you're curious about like what
- 20:10Speaker 3: it's going to be, or what the classes took, or
- 20:12Speaker 3: like if they went abroad, and like what good colleges
- 20:14Speaker 3: that you could go to. Like I studied abroad in Paris,
- 20:16Speaker 3: and another girl who was my big she went to
- 20:20Speaker 3: the Para School business, so I kind of got to
- 20:22Speaker 3: talk to her all about that. And then another girl
- 20:24Speaker 3: I was interviewing for a company like post grad at
- 20:27Speaker 3: Pottery Barn, and she had worked there and kind of
- 20:29Speaker 3: helped me. So I feel like in the long run
- 20:31Speaker 3: of things, like you could definitely use it to like
- 20:32Speaker 3: your ability, and like you'll always be in the chapter
- 20:35Speaker 3: like forever, so basically, so it would be good to
- 20:38Speaker 3: like use that as like your benefit to your benefit,
- 20:40Speaker 3: especially if people are like doing exciting, fun things.
- 20:43Speaker 1: I definitely don't think that it should be a like
- 20:46Speaker 1: large reason and as to you join. I think it
- 20:48Speaker 1: should be something that like maybe after or like you
- 20:50Speaker 1: start to realize that, like you're just surrounded by so
- 20:52Speaker 1: many like really smart intelligent women that like aren't really
- 20:55Speaker 1: driven and have a lot of things like kind of
- 20:57Speaker 1: going for them and just like either use it to
- 20:59Speaker 1: like ask them advice. I used to ask them questions
- 21:01Speaker 1: or ask how they got there, et cetera. I remember
- 21:04Speaker 1: when I was rushing going down to my two houses,
- 21:07Speaker 1: there was kind of one house that almost just like
- 21:10Speaker 1: made me feel like I was getting like recruited. Like
- 21:12Speaker 1: I kind of felt like every time I was going
- 21:14Speaker 1: in there, it was like almost a job interview, and
- 21:16Speaker 1: like they were really like showing like all the inter
- 21:19Speaker 1: summer internships that they've done and like a lot of
- 21:21Speaker 1: the things, and it's like this is great and all,
- 21:23Speaker 1: and like you guys are have so much going for
- 21:26Speaker 1: you guys. But I think when I was like rolling
- 21:29Speaker 1: down to it, I was like, I'm doing this to
- 21:30Speaker 1: make friends. I'm not doing it to like have LinkedIn
- 21:33Speaker 1: connections and like whatever house that you're gonna go into,
- 21:37Speaker 1: like there's gonna have like you're gonna be surrounded with
- 21:40Speaker 1: girls that have a lot of things going for them.
- 21:42Speaker 1: So I think more so like maybe after you join,
- 21:45Speaker 1: like get to know the girls and like see where
- 21:47Speaker 1: they're at and like see like kind of like what
- 21:48Speaker 1: they've done and like learn and like you guys are
- 21:50Speaker 1: there to motivate one another.
- 21:52Speaker 5: I definitely I completely agree, and I think that once again,
- 21:55Speaker 5: this is one of those things where it's like an
- 21:57Speaker 5: unexpected benefit, but it shouldn't be like the reason that
- 21:59Speaker 5: you do it For me, Like I actually got my
- 22:01Speaker 5: job through my sorority because of one of my like
- 22:05Speaker 5: sorority sisters was leaving, and like I had managed to
- 22:09Speaker 5: kind of like ask around like if anyone had had
- 22:11Speaker 5: any jobs in an industry I was really interested in,
- 22:14Speaker 5: and next seen, you know, like I got her job.
- 22:16Speaker 5: So like I feel like I'm a maybe unique case
- 22:19Speaker 5: because I do feel like I owe a lot of
- 22:21Speaker 5: like DG for being the reason that I like have
- 22:24Speaker 5: the job that I have now postgrad. But again, it's
- 22:26Speaker 5: like one of those like benefits that I think if
- 22:29Speaker 5: you go into it with that expectation, it could be
- 22:32Speaker 5: a little bit superficial. Not superficial, but like you shouldn't
- 22:35Speaker 5: be joining a sorority to get LinkedIn connections, Like I
- 22:37Speaker 5: completely agree with that. I think it's like the ability
- 22:40Speaker 5: to just like know that there's so many people in
- 22:42Speaker 5: like your quote unquote network of just like your alum
- 22:46Speaker 5: like your big alumni group, which I think is really cool,
- 22:49Speaker 5: and like we had a lot of really incredible opportunities
- 22:51Speaker 5: where moms would come in and talk in our sorority
- 22:54Speaker 5: about like what they've been doing since they graduated. And
- 22:56Speaker 5: I actually really benefited from that and really appreciated that
- 22:59Speaker 5: sort of mentor shit. But it's like it's kind of
- 23:02Speaker 5: a perk that isn't I don't think it should be
- 23:03Speaker 5: like a huge priority.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Agreed. Okay, Another one I don't agree with, Sorry, to
- 23:09Speaker 2: receive academic support. Did not join my sworty for that reason. Again,
- 23:13Speaker 2: could just be me, but I did not join my
- 23:16Speaker 2: swarty to receive academic support, And I don't know anyone
- 23:19Speaker 2: who has.
- 23:20Speaker 4: Do you guys, not at all? You're negative.
- 23:24Speaker 5: Probably you probably took away for my studying time, But
- 23:27Speaker 5: like any good way, I.
- 23:28Speaker 3: Feel like honestly, it was like a negative thing because
- 23:30Speaker 3: if people had bad groods, they like couldn't go out
- 23:32Speaker 3: and we're on probation and had to like prove their
- 23:34Speaker 3: grades for like the rest of the semester. So I
- 23:37Speaker 3: feeling I came back to like get people if their
- 23:39Speaker 3: grades weren't so good.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Yeah, kind of like one of those things of like
- 23:43Speaker 1: especially when like you live in the house, it's like,
- 23:44Speaker 1: oh my god, like I need all of you guys
- 23:46Speaker 1: to like get away from me right now so that
- 23:48Speaker 1: I can like focus and do my homework kind of thing.
- 23:52Speaker 2: So definitely not Yeah, And I just feel like like
- 23:56Speaker 2: once you are in college, like you're only gonna like
- 23:59Speaker 2: study and care about school. Like if you do, like
- 24:01Speaker 2: I feel like you're like an adult at that point,
- 24:03Speaker 2: Like no one needs to be telling you to study,
- 24:05Speaker 2: like you're going to do it because.
- 24:06Speaker 4: It's important to you.
- 24:07Speaker 2: So I just personally feel like that's kind of on
- 24:10Speaker 2: your own. The next one, I'm not really sure I
- 24:12Speaker 2: quite understand, but it's to develop personally, and I'm I'm
- 24:15Speaker 2: just gonna take that as like grow like yourself is
- 24:18Speaker 2: you're just going to grow from being in authorty, which
- 24:23Speaker 2: I agree with but also like I don't know how
- 24:25Speaker 2: much that was specifically my Sowarty. Like, I just feel
- 24:28Speaker 2: like college are just like big years you like go
- 24:30Speaker 2: through a lot for the first time after like living
- 24:32Speaker 2: at home with your parents and like moving to a
- 24:37Speaker 2: new place and like making all new friends. I don't know,
- 24:40Speaker 2: I just feel like there's a lot of like obstacles
- 24:41Speaker 2: you go through to grow, and like I think sorority
- 24:43Speaker 2: is part of it, but I don't know if it's.
- 24:44Speaker 6: Like the whole aspect of like growing.
- 24:47Speaker 2: So I don't know, but I agree with that placed
- 24:49Speaker 2: at number eight, Like I feel like that's like accurate
- 24:51Speaker 2: to me.
- 24:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that there's just so many situations that
- 24:55Speaker 5: you're put in being in a sorority that you have
- 24:57Speaker 5: to be forced to grow that I don't necessarily think
- 25:00Speaker 5: you would be experiencing otherwise. And maybe that's like learning
- 25:03Speaker 5: how to live with sixty other girls, that's like a
- 25:06Speaker 5: growth that like you've never expect or learning how to
- 25:10Speaker 5: navigate like a social obligation while also needing to like
- 25:14Speaker 5: finish an assignment, like those sorts of like kind of
- 25:18Speaker 5: just things that you have to navigate. I think you
- 25:21Speaker 5: learn probably a lot of like social skills and communication
- 25:26Speaker 5: skills and like loyalty and you know things like that
- 25:29Speaker 5: that I think necessity will learn those in college in general.
- 25:32Speaker 5: But like being in a story kind of like helps
- 25:34Speaker 5: you kind of nourish them. So I think eight, maybe
- 25:37Speaker 5: like seven or eight, maybe swap it with the other one.
- 25:40Speaker 2: Totally, Okay. Number nine is which I touched on a
- 25:44Speaker 2: little bit earlier to find mentors in role models, which
- 25:47Speaker 2: I think I would have put higher up on my
- 25:49Speaker 2: list personally. What did you guys think?
- 25:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel like that deserves to be a bit
- 25:54Speaker 1: higher up for sure, of just like especially like your
- 25:57Speaker 1: bigs or like your grand big, et cetera. Like I
- 26:00Speaker 1: think knowing that like you're joining a house that like
- 26:03Speaker 1: you joined it for reasons of like you kind of
- 26:06Speaker 1: have admiration for those girls and like like really like
- 26:10Speaker 1: kind of like want to support like what they have
- 26:11Speaker 1: going on kind of like follow into those footsteps. So
- 26:14Speaker 1: like those should be people that like you look up
- 26:16Speaker 1: to and like people who you want to surround yourselves with.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Then I feel like even if they're the same age
- 26:21Speaker 1: as you, even if they're younger than you, like it
- 26:23Speaker 1: really doesn't matter. Of just like having a lot of
- 26:26Speaker 1: just like off or like the girls that like you're
- 26:28Speaker 1: surrounding yourself with and like knowing that like you can
- 26:31Speaker 1: are in a space where like they can give you advice,
- 26:34Speaker 1: be a mentor. I feel like that's like something that's
- 26:37Speaker 1: like majorly contributes to the whole, Like sisterhood kind of
- 26:40Speaker 1: term of it all is like you're surrounded by girls
- 26:43Speaker 1: who are always going to have your back and like
- 26:45Speaker 1: guide you through whatever.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Okay, last one, which I think we're all gonna agree
- 26:49Speaker 2: with again, I think I would have ranked it higher,
- 26:52Speaker 2: but totally agree with it being on the list. To
- 26:54Speaker 2: create lasting memories, I think is like for a lot
- 26:58Speaker 2: of people to number one reason why they're joining us
- 27:00Speaker 2: sorority along with lifelong friendships.
- 27:01Speaker 4: But I think like.
- 27:04Speaker 2: Your memories in a sorority house and like living in
- 27:07Speaker 2: the house and formals and everything you get to do
- 27:09Speaker 2: is like stuff you'll talk about for the rest of
- 27:11Speaker 2: your life at your sorority sister's weddings and it's just
- 27:16Speaker 2: a lot of special memories that you'll carry on forever.
- 27:19Speaker 2: So like that would probably be higher on my list,
- 27:21Speaker 2: but I definitely agree with it being on there.
- 27:23Speaker 3: I completely agree to you. I feel like it would
- 27:25Speaker 3: be a lot higher on my list because I feel
- 27:28Speaker 3: like I have so many great memories that I look
- 27:30Speaker 3: back now being postgrad and kind of miss and events
- 27:33Speaker 3: that we did or going to formals and pre parties
- 27:38Speaker 3: and all that stuff. So I think long lasting memories
- 27:41Speaker 3: would definitely be a little bit higher.
- 27:43Speaker 2: So those were the top ten reasons women join sororities
- 27:47Speaker 2: from the ASS Sorority Standards Instagram. That's it for this
- 27:52Speaker 2: episode of Dirty Rush. Thank you guys so much for
