Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The following program is produced by the Tech Talk Radio Network.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Hey what's up. This is Tom Arnold and you're listening
- 0:06Speaker 2: to tech Talk Radio. They're really great and I love them. Hey,
- 0:10Speaker 2: how about a copy of Windows? Can I get a laptop?
- 0:14Speaker 1: Welcome to another episode of tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor,
- 0:18Speaker 1: I'm Sean de Weird, and we are the show that
- 0:21Speaker 1: talks about computers, technology, and of course the Internet. It's
- 0:26Speaker 1: good to see Sean. I'm and board games and boy, yeah,
- 0:29Speaker 1: we got to talk about board games because Sean has
- 0:32Speaker 1: just come back from one of the Is it like
- 0:34Speaker 1: the biggest board game convention in the like in the
- 0:37Speaker 1: United States?
- 0:38Speaker 2: It's definitely the largest tabletop roleplaying game collectible card game
- 0:43Speaker 2: convention in the country for sure.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Right.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Yeah, So it's called gen Con. Right, it's hosted here
- 0:48Speaker 2: in Indianapolis. Brief history. It started link Geneva, Wisconsin, and
- 0:54Speaker 2: then outgrew that and then kind of just made its
- 0:56Speaker 2: way to Indianapolis in this sometime in the eighties.
- 0:59Speaker 1: I think, wow.
- 1:02Speaker 2: And my friend Steve and I have been going since
- 1:04Speaker 2: twenty fourteen. I've always wanted to go since grade school
- 1:07Speaker 2: because it was kind of like the thing to do
- 1:09Speaker 2: go play all the new board games and try out
- 1:11Speaker 2: all the new card games, and you know, play magic
- 1:13Speaker 2: the Gathering and those types of things. So my friend
- 1:16Speaker 2: and I, my friend Steve and I just went one
- 1:18Speaker 2: year and did it. Was like my first major convention, right, right,
- 1:23Speaker 2: So we were so overwhelmed. We had no idea what
- 1:26Speaker 2: was going on.
- 1:27Speaker 1: So I remember in high school, when I was going
- 1:29Speaker 1: high school many many years ago, we played a game
- 1:32Speaker 1: called Traveler, which I believe was a form of Dungeons
- 1:36Speaker 1: and Dragons. Was that one of the games that you
- 1:38Speaker 1: would see covered at something like gen Con?
- 1:41Speaker 2: Oh? Yeah, so the big one is Dungeons and Dragons, right,
- 1:45Speaker 2: That's kind of what got it started. It was tabletop
- 1:48Speaker 2: RPGs Dungeons and Dragons, right, And there have been many
- 1:53Speaker 2: tabletop rpg spinoffs using dice and those things from Dungeons
- 1:57Speaker 2: and Dragons. I mean, there's too many to list. The
- 2:01Speaker 2: one of the cool things about gen Con is you
- 2:04Speaker 2: can meet with the developers and play the new tabletop
- 2:09Speaker 2: RPGs that are coming out. There are a couple that
- 2:11Speaker 2: we played this past weekend. One for those who are
- 2:15Speaker 2: listening who are big fantasy novel readers. Brandon Sanderson right,
- 2:19Speaker 2: he wrote a bunch of books called The Stormline Archives.
- 2:22Speaker 2: It's a novels with novella's and other pieces.
- 2:25Speaker 1: It's part of his.
- 2:26Speaker 2: World they are building. They built a tabletop RPG based
- 2:30Speaker 2: in the world of Stormline Archives, the world of Rushan, right,
- 2:36Speaker 2: And so they announced that they were going to kickstart
- 2:39Speaker 2: that starting the I think August sixth, so that's obviously
- 2:43Speaker 2: after gen Con. And so they offered the availability to
- 2:46Speaker 2: play it and demo it and get to meet the
- 2:48Speaker 2: developers and stuff and talk about the game before it
- 2:51Speaker 2: was actually released on Kickshurter so, and.
- 2:52Speaker 1: That's one of the ones you've got a chance to try, right.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Yeah, So I got to sit in and do a
- 2:56Speaker 2: four hour session with that. And I also got invited
- 2:59Speaker 2: to the close de beta last week, so I actually
- 3:02Speaker 2: got the material before gen Con, so I actually got
- 3:04Speaker 2: to download the material. I printed it out, put it
- 3:07Speaker 2: in a binder, was slipping through it red notes and stuff,
- 3:10Speaker 2: made notes and red druid stuff. And it's pretty cool.
- 3:13Speaker 2: It's it's still a D twenty based system D twelve
- 3:19Speaker 2: So for those of you who aren't so so, for
- 3:22Speaker 2: those of you who aren't familiar with the tabletop role
- 3:24Speaker 2: Playing Game World. The D twenty system is a the
- 3:29Speaker 2: D twenty twenty sided dice. Okay, so think of D
- 3:32Speaker 2: D is dice and then the number is the number
- 3:34Speaker 2: of sides, So D four four sided dice, D six
- 3:36Speaker 2: six sided dice, D eight, D twelve, you know whatever.
- 3:40Speaker 2: The D twenty system is a system that is based
- 3:44Speaker 2: off of rolling D twenties or D twenty. You know,
- 3:47Speaker 2: the D twenty dice, right for the for the majority
- 3:49Speaker 2: of the important things that happened in the game.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Now, the roll of the dice indicates the type of
- 3:55Speaker 1: move you're making.
- 3:57Speaker 2: It can all depend on what you're playing, right, It
- 3:59Speaker 2: all depends on what so Like, if you decided you
- 4:03Speaker 2: wanted to jump over a chasm to rescue your friend,
- 4:07Speaker 2: right your friends stuck, you would say, I want to
- 4:10Speaker 2: jump over this chasm, and then I would say, okay,
- 4:13Speaker 2: you need to. On your character sheet you have stats, strength, wisdom, intelligence, dexterity, alism,
- 4:20Speaker 2: I would say, roll me in athletics check which is
- 4:23Speaker 2: a strength based or dexterity based thing. So you've rolled
- 4:27Speaker 2: the D twenty, right, Okay, if you say you got
- 4:30Speaker 2: a ten, and you might have bonuses based on what
- 4:33Speaker 2: you're playing and then your ability. There is what's called
- 4:36Speaker 2: the DC, which is the difficulty challenge that's set based
- 4:41Speaker 2: in the either the module or the whoever's Dungeon mastering
- 4:43Speaker 2: or game measuring sets that difficulty and you either beat
- 4:47Speaker 2: or exceed or fail on your role. So you roll
- 4:51Speaker 2: the d twenty. So the dice tells the story, right,
- 4:54Speaker 2: So you roll the dice and you succeed or you fail,
- 4:56Speaker 2: and then it's up to the narrative, the DM and
- 4:58Speaker 2: the player to role play this scenario. So if it's
- 5:02Speaker 2: really really low, it could be an epic failure. Or
- 5:05Speaker 2: if it's really high, or you roll a twenty, it
- 5:07Speaker 2: could be a really crazy good success. And you might
- 5:10Speaker 2: add some flare to you might do a flip, you know,
- 5:12Speaker 2: kind of you can kind of kind of play it.
- 5:14Speaker 1: However, and this is all it's all described. It's not like, oh, yeah,
- 5:19Speaker 1: you are.
- 5:19Speaker 2: You are constantly talking about the world. You're describing what
- 5:22Speaker 2: you're doing. You're describing the environment, the smells, the sights,
- 5:25Speaker 2: and the sounds, the fields like it's it's role playing.
- 5:29Speaker 2: You are trying to immerse yourself as much in this
- 5:33Speaker 2: world as possible. So the benefit of the Stormline Archives
- 5:36Speaker 2: is that the world is built right. Brandon Sanderson's has
- 5:40Speaker 2: this this huge collection of novels that this world is
- 5:43Speaker 2: built in, So this is set in that world, so
- 5:46Speaker 2: you can kind of submit yourself to that world, whereas
- 5:51Speaker 2: other RPGs are their own worlds, or you're creating your
- 5:54Speaker 2: own world based on your own ideas and things like that,
- 5:59Speaker 2: like Dungeons Dragons is the world is Forgotten Realms, right, right,
- 6:03Speaker 2: that's the world and Dragons is built in.
- 6:05Speaker 1: So this is a world where from what it feels
- 6:09Speaker 1: like to me is like it's it's all in the mind.
- 6:11Speaker 1: It's creativity.
- 6:12Speaker 2: You're constantly thinking, right. So a lot of the times,
- 6:15Speaker 2: if you're playing in person, you can use maps and
- 6:19Speaker 2: miniatures and things like that. But sometimes if you don't
- 6:21Speaker 2: have a map you play, your players go completely off
- 6:24Speaker 2: kilter and you're in some scenario where you didn't even
- 6:27Speaker 2: think about you didn't have a map drawn up, you
- 6:29Speaker 2: don't have It's called theater of the mind, right. You
- 6:31Speaker 2: can just say what you're doing and let your players
- 6:35Speaker 2: envision the world in their own minds, and everybody theater
- 6:38Speaker 2: of the mind. So it's it's a great way to
- 6:41Speaker 2: just be creative in your own brain. Let your players
- 6:44Speaker 2: be creative, Let the let the GM be creative and
- 6:47Speaker 2: play it like that. And it's just it's fun. It's
- 6:51Speaker 2: you get to you get to think, you get you
- 6:52Speaker 2: get to escape, you get to build, and it's it's
- 6:55Speaker 2: all built in these big fantasy worlds, which which are
- 6:57Speaker 2: a ton of fun to play in. And then there's
- 7:00Speaker 2: every genre you can possibly think of that has tabletope, rbgs, horror,
- 7:05Speaker 2: fan fiction, historical fiction, uh, you know, recreated history. You
- 7:11Speaker 2: could do Civil Wars type stuff. You could do World
- 7:14Speaker 2: War one, world War two. All there are all these
- 7:16Speaker 2: RPGs built in all these worlds that have different rule
- 7:21Speaker 2: sets and different things.
- 7:22Speaker 1: So does the does the game? Does it ever end?
- 7:25Speaker 1: Or is it this is a kind of an ongoing
- 7:27Speaker 1: thing not you know, you play Candy Crush and I'm
- 7:30Speaker 1: sorry for mich to Candy Crush, or you play you know, Monopoly,
- 7:33Speaker 1: there is a point where the game finishes. Does this
- 7:36Speaker 1: ever end?
- 7:36Speaker 2: It kind of has a natural ending most of the time, right,
- 7:40Speaker 2: A lot of the times it's the groups can't play
- 7:41Speaker 2: together much anymore, and they get the band. They just
- 7:43Speaker 2: kind of dissolve and start over a new campaign later
- 7:46Speaker 2: or whatever. But there is a There is a theoretical
- 7:49Speaker 2: limit on level. Level twenty in Dungeons of Dragons is
- 7:52Speaker 2: the theoretical limit. There is home brewed content that goes
- 7:56Speaker 2: beyond that. But you get to level twenty in Dungeons
- 7:59Speaker 2: and Dragons pretty powerful, right, So there's there's not a
- 8:02Speaker 2: lot of It kind of gets you kind of hit
- 8:04Speaker 2: a wall where it's like you can't really go much
- 8:06Speaker 2: further without being an actual god in the game.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, you do the wizard strut, right.
- 8:11Speaker 2: But so, like you would play through a campaign and
- 8:13Speaker 2: usually there's like a major objective or a major plot line,
- 8:16Speaker 2: or a major major end game that you're trying to reach,
- 8:19Speaker 2: and however you get to that end game is kind
- 8:22Speaker 2: of the end of that campaign. You know. I've started
- 8:26Speaker 2: and stopped dozens of campaigns over there, you know, since
- 8:30Speaker 2: grade school when I started playing.
- 8:31Speaker 1: So right now, for somebody who has never ever done
- 8:35Speaker 1: this before, and they're listening to this, and they're they're going, well,
- 8:38Speaker 1: I've played you know, video games, they may have played
- 8:42Speaker 1: World of Warcraft and stuff like that, but this whole
- 8:45Speaker 1: board game thing takes on a whole new premise. Is
- 8:48Speaker 1: it difficult for somebody who's never done this before to
- 8:51Speaker 1: say I want to I want to give this a try,
- 8:53Speaker 1: I want to play this.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Uh I would ten years ago, I would have said yes.
- 8:58Speaker 2: It would have been a little bit more difficult to
- 9:01Speaker 2: get into it unless you knew somebody or what you
- 9:03Speaker 2: knew a game story you could go into and they
- 9:04Speaker 2: could sit down and set you down with the rules.
- 9:08Speaker 2: The Dungeons and Dragons has gone through several iterations. Right
- 9:12Speaker 2: they're currently on their fifth edition with the release of
- 9:16Speaker 2: a twenty twenty four version of D and D. Like
- 9:18Speaker 2: they just released the Player Handbook for D and D
- 9:21Speaker 2: twenty twenty four, that's what they're calling it right now.
- 9:24Speaker 2: I got that at gen Con. This's the first time
- 9:27Speaker 2: they released the book at gen Con. First public sales
- 9:30Speaker 2: were at gen Con. But their fifth edition is is
- 9:34Speaker 2: pretty friendly to new players.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Oh cool.
- 9:37Speaker 2: And if you find somebody that you know is playing
- 9:40Speaker 2: D and D and you're interested, just say, hey, run
- 9:42Speaker 2: me through the starter kit or run me through a
- 9:46Speaker 2: one they call them one shots, like run me through
- 9:47Speaker 2: one campaign, start me at level three, give me an
- 9:50Speaker 2: idea of what's going on, and just do it. You
- 9:52Speaker 2: just sit down and you roll play. You figure it
- 9:54Speaker 2: out and that's what it takes. It takes you have
- 9:57Speaker 2: to sit and think and play and you have to
- 10:00Speaker 2: do it. You have to have the mindset of this
- 10:02Speaker 2: is a game. It's gonna take. I have to learn
- 10:04Speaker 2: how to play it. There's gonna be some a learning curve.
- 10:06Speaker 2: It's not You're not gonna just jump right in and
- 10:09Speaker 2: know how to play. But I've taught people how to play. Yeah,
- 10:14Speaker 2: I think that you and Justin would be able to
- 10:17Speaker 2: figure it out right talked about doing We've talked about
- 10:19Speaker 2: doing it where we jump in and I D and D.
- 10:21Speaker 2: We played D and D with you guys. I think
- 10:23Speaker 2: it'd be a fun episode to do.
- 10:26Speaker 1: And that's the That's one of the keys is that, Yes,
- 10:29Speaker 1: it was probably fun at game Con because you know,
- 10:32Speaker 1: you had your friends with you. You're in person, but you
- 10:35Speaker 1: don't have to be in person to actually have a
- 10:37Speaker 1: game you have you could set it up where you
- 10:39Speaker 1: do it by a stream.
- 10:41Speaker 2: So for the last so I would say for the
- 10:44Speaker 2: last seven or eight years, it started going to a
- 10:47Speaker 2: virtual tabletop.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Right.
- 10:49Speaker 2: There are many third party birth they call them VTTs
- 10:53Speaker 2: virtual tabletops. Roll twenty foundry. There's a bunch of these
- 10:57Speaker 2: virtual tabletops where you can in build maps, put tokens,
- 11:03Speaker 2: ad effects, ad music, ad lighting, all this stuff, and
- 11:06Speaker 2: and share that all with your players so that what
- 11:09Speaker 2: I'm seeing is the GM is different than what you're
- 11:11Speaker 2: seeing is the player, so I can still surprise you
- 11:14Speaker 2: with things you can't see around the corners, those types
- 11:16Speaker 2: of things. So roll twenty is the one that I
- 11:19Speaker 2: use for all of my games. It has been the
- 11:22Speaker 2: easiest to use. And then Dungeons and Dragons, so there
- 11:26Speaker 2: was a there was a company called D and D Beyond.
- 11:28Speaker 2: They took the character sheets that for Dungeons Dragons you
- 11:33Speaker 2: would normally be write out of it, and they virtualized
- 11:35Speaker 2: them so you could just put all your stats in there.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Then they licensed the content from Wizards of the Coast
- 11:41Speaker 2: and you could go in. You could put your skit
- 11:43Speaker 2: spills and the spells in there. You can put your
- 11:44Speaker 2: skills in there, you can put your weapons in there,
- 11:46Speaker 2: you can homebrew your own content, and it made They
- 11:48Speaker 2: made this really awesome interface so you could just log
- 11:51Speaker 2: in and see all your stuff, so your character sheets,
- 11:53Speaker 2: and then they tied it all in and then Wizards
- 11:56Speaker 2: of the Coast bought them. Has Bro bought a D
- 11:59Speaker 2: and D beyond. So now they're part of Wizards and
- 12:02Speaker 2: they're growing that into their own three D three D
- 12:05Speaker 2: virtual tabletopping tabletop system, which will roll out in the
- 12:10Speaker 2: next little while.
- 12:10Speaker 1: But so now, so what you're saying is the something
- 12:13Speaker 1: like meta that you'd be able to wear the Maja
- 12:16Speaker 1: glasses and experience something in three.
- 12:18Speaker 2: D at some point in time in the near future.
- 12:20Speaker 2: I expect that to happen. I don't have any experience
- 12:24Speaker 2: with that, but I don't I foresee that happening in
- 12:26Speaker 2: the near future where you could sit down and experience
- 12:30Speaker 2: the virtual world as you're you know, in whatever game
- 12:34Speaker 2: fashion you might come up with. I'm sure it's coming
- 12:36Speaker 2: a more full immersion virtual tabletop game.
- 12:40Speaker 1: You know what I can't understand those Sean is is
- 12:42Speaker 1: you look at gen Con and again it's it's it's
- 12:45Speaker 1: really a I'm not going to say it's a niche,
- 12:47Speaker 1: but you've got you know, tabletop RPGs. Why did E
- 12:52Speaker 1: three fail wet A three is done? Why you look
- 12:57Speaker 1: at gen Con, you look at E three, you would think, Okay,
- 13:00Speaker 1: there's more people that are going to be involved and
- 13:02Speaker 1: enjoying what E three brings to the table, where you
- 13:05Speaker 1: bring you know, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Switch, PC games, games
- 13:10Speaker 1: for the back, games from Meta, and yet they don't
- 13:14Speaker 1: they they're not doing it anymore.
- 13:16Speaker 2: I honestly don't have an answer to that, right, I
- 13:18Speaker 2: just know that the community around board games, So in
- 13:22Speaker 2: the last I keep saying the last decade because that's
- 13:25Speaker 2: about how long I've been going to gen cooms twenty
- 13:27Speaker 2: fourteen was so this was my ninth year going in
- 13:30Speaker 2: a row outside of covid Or. Obviously we didn't go
- 13:33Speaker 2: to a crovia. But the community around board games is,
- 13:37Speaker 2: you know, everybody loves, Everybody enjoys playing board games. What
- 13:41Speaker 2: people don't realize is there's more to board games than Monopoly,
- 13:45Speaker 2: the game of Life, right, who knows, but there are
- 13:49Speaker 2: there are thousands and thousands of board games based off
- 13:54Speaker 2: of other pop culture things, off of other scenarios, off
- 13:59Speaker 2: of anything you can think about game board games you
- 14:01Speaker 2: can think of. There are thousands of thousands of board games.
- 14:05Speaker 1: I think there's even websites dedicated to people who are
- 14:08Speaker 1: launching the board games. Right.
- 14:09Speaker 2: So Kickstarter is a big one. A lot of board
- 14:12Speaker 2: games get their start Kickstarter. Board Game Arena. If you're
- 14:15Speaker 2: interested in playing a lot of popular, very popular board games.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Board game arena dot com is a website you can
- 14:21Speaker 2: go on and play virtual versions of more of the
- 14:24Speaker 2: some of the more popular titles. Right, if you're interested
- 14:28Speaker 2: in finding a game that you might like a board game, board.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Game, geek board game geek dot or is a board games.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Board game, board game geek dot com. Okay, it's probably
- 14:40Speaker 2: the most sought after place to find information on board games.
- 14:43Speaker 2: You can put your collection in there, you can price
- 14:45Speaker 2: stuff out, you can buy, you can sell. They write reviews.
- 14:50Speaker 2: So if you wanted to see, like what what was
- 14:51Speaker 2: all about gen Con? Like that the top fifty games
- 14:54Speaker 2: of gen Con? They have a list, they had a
- 14:56Speaker 2: booth there, they do live streams like there. There is
- 15:00Speaker 2: a whole culture around board games, more games, tabletop arberges, training,
- 15:05Speaker 2: card games.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Wow, they're selling stuff there too, right, And I did
- 15:11Speaker 1: you not make a purchase or two? How did that go?
- 15:18Speaker 2: Because if I talk about it here, Caitlyn will know
- 15:20Speaker 2: how much I really spent. No, to be honest, right,
- 15:25Speaker 2: So to be honest, Right, what's cool about gen Con
- 15:28Speaker 2: is you can buy, you can sell, right. So what
- 15:31Speaker 2: I've done the last couple of times is I play
- 15:32Speaker 2: a lot of magic the gathering. Okay, that's a collector,
- 15:35Speaker 2: that's a collector's card game, right. But over the years,
- 15:37Speaker 2: you collect more than what you play with, right, you
- 15:40Speaker 2: collect just a bunch of stuff. I've been playing for
- 15:42Speaker 2: twenty years. I have a ton of stuff. I went
- 15:44Speaker 2: through and parsed out valuable cards for my collections that
- 15:48Speaker 2: I don't play with and sold them for cash or
- 15:50Speaker 2: gen Con this year. Oh and then turned that cash
- 15:53Speaker 2: around and spent it on things that I wanted to buy.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Cool.
- 15:57Speaker 2: So I went specifically this year to play mostly the
- 16:02Speaker 2: tabletop RPG's right, the brand the Stormline Archives one. There
- 16:07Speaker 2: is a D and D podcast called Critical Role, right
- 16:10Speaker 2: that they made their own that they've been playing D
- 16:14Speaker 2: D fifth edition, but they made their own tabletop RPG
- 16:17Speaker 2: called dagger Heart, which is a completely different system than
- 16:23Speaker 2: D and D. Uh, and we played it and it
- 16:25Speaker 2: was incredible.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Wow.
- 16:27Speaker 2: So uh, they're currently you know, in in open beta,
- 16:30Speaker 2: so you can go on to did the dagger Heart website,
- 16:33Speaker 2: download the materials, play it for free, check it out,
- 16:36Speaker 2: and they're going to be releasing the actual, the actual
- 16:39Speaker 2: released content sometime in twenty twenty five. So I'm excited
- 16:43Speaker 2: for that one. Right, there's call of Cthulhu.
- 16:46Speaker 1: There's uh, I've heard of that one.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Candle Candle. Uh, there's a couple of there's a bunch.
- 16:53Speaker 2: There's so many, right, there's there's ones based off of
- 16:55Speaker 2: like Stargate SG one, there's some based off of being
- 17:01Speaker 2: in Space, Starfinder Pathfinder. There's so many.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Is there any base around the world of Alien you know?
- 17:08Speaker 1: You get because yes there is.
- 17:09Speaker 2: There's actually a new one that just came out called
- 17:12Speaker 2: the Alien the RPG.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Oh wow. Cool.
- 17:15Speaker 2: So there are literally any universe you could think of.
- 17:17Speaker 2: There's likely a tabletop RBG based on it.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Wow. Now, if listeners would ever want to go to
- 17:23Speaker 1: this gen con, it happens once a year and it
- 17:26Speaker 1: happens in Indianapolis. I remember when you went last year.
- 17:29Speaker 2: Yeah. So it's usually the last weekend of July into
- 17:32Speaker 2: the into into the beginning of August. So this year
- 17:34Speaker 2: it was August first through the fourth or something like that.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Next year is July thirty first to August third. It
- 17:41Speaker 2: starts on Thursday morning, ends on Sunday afternoon. Steve and
- 17:46Speaker 2: I drove down Wednesday night. We got in Indianapolis like
- 17:48Speaker 2: one am, right Thursday morning, went to sleep, got up
- 17:51Speaker 2: at seven, and we were there from seven until like
- 17:55Speaker 2: midnight thirty. Came back to the airbnb, went to sleep.
- 17:59Speaker 2: We're up at seven, right back at it for another
- 18:02Speaker 2: twelve hours.
- 18:02Speaker 1: That's pretty amazing.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Rinse, rinse, and repeat until Sunday at what two o'clock
- 18:08Speaker 2: when we drove home.
- 18:08Speaker 1: And you never you never get bored through the whole
- 18:10Speaker 1: thing because you're just seeing.
- 18:12Speaker 2: So I mean, so there is there is downtime, right,
- 18:15Speaker 2: You're gonna have downtime, But you could schedule as literally,
- 18:17Speaker 2: you could schedule twenty four hours of content every day
- 18:20Speaker 2: you were there. If you wanted to wow, the place
- 18:22Speaker 2: is open twenty four hours. There are events running twenty
- 18:25Speaker 2: four hours. It all depends on what you want to do, right.
- 18:28Speaker 2: It depends on if you know, obviously there's not as
- 18:32Speaker 2: many at nighttime, right, but if you wanted to play
- 18:35Speaker 2: magic the gathering at two o'clock in the morning, you
- 18:39Speaker 2: just go to the hall and say, I want to
- 18:41Speaker 2: play in a pickup game of manage with the gathering,
- 18:43Speaker 2: and as soon as they have eight people, you go,
- 18:45Speaker 2: you go. It fires.
- 18:46Speaker 1: I remember, John, when I lived in Orange County, California.
- 18:51Speaker 1: You're not that far from LA We went to the
- 18:54Speaker 1: big science fiction and Fantasy convention in Los Angeles, and
- 18:58Speaker 1: you know, it was a huge convey people do the
- 19:01Speaker 1: cosplay and the whole bit, and it was a it
- 19:04Speaker 1: was a lot of fun to to check out. But
- 19:06Speaker 1: they had movies twenty four to seven. They had like
- 19:09Speaker 1: one run you could go. And that was the first
- 19:11Speaker 1: time I ever saw a Rocky Horror Picture Show. And
- 19:13Speaker 1: I remember I walked in I got hit with a
- 19:15Speaker 1: piece of toast because that was during the toast scene
- 19:18Speaker 1: and everything. What the heck is this.
- 19:21Speaker 2: Rocky Horror Picture Show is a great movie, right?
- 19:23Speaker 1: And I mean they were doing these all like all night,
- 19:25Speaker 1: all these movies, horror films, science fiction films, and it
- 19:29Speaker 1: was because you had a captive audience that loved that genre.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Now I'm looking at it like one of the things
- 19:37Speaker 1: you bought, and I'm thinking, this is huge. This is
- 19:40Speaker 1: pretty amazing. And if you want to see photos of
- 19:42Speaker 1: it or the video available up on our blog blog
- 19:44Speaker 1: dot tech talk radio dot com. What the heck is that?
- 19:48Speaker 2: So this is a game called Everdell. It's made by
- 19:51Speaker 2: Starlight Games.
- 19:52Speaker 1: That's a game.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Wow, this is the whole This is the whole question, right.
- 19:56Speaker 2: So Everdell is a series of games, collector positions, expansions,
- 20:01Speaker 2: et cetera. I played it for the first time last
- 20:04Speaker 2: year at gen Con. I actually played the children's version
- 20:07Speaker 2: last year at gen Con it bought bought the children's
- 20:10Speaker 2: version to play it, and then was like, this game
- 20:13Speaker 2: is awesome. Then actually learned how to play the base
- 20:17Speaker 2: game and said, this is my this is my big
- 20:20Speaker 2: purchase for the year. Right, So this big box set
- 20:22Speaker 2: is everything Everdell has been printed since. So this is
- 20:27Speaker 2: my big purchase for this year. So it's it's a bunch.
- 20:30Speaker 2: It's a bunch of content in here. There's a ton
- 20:33Speaker 2: of pieces in here. Like it's it's a whole you
- 20:35Speaker 2: build a whole world, you build a whole big tree
- 20:37Speaker 2: out of it. It's it's a worker replacement game that
- 20:40Speaker 2: uses resources to buy and you built it basically build
- 20:42Speaker 2: a big village. It's really an incredible game. I can't
- 20:45Speaker 2: really do it justice by talking about it. You kind
- 20:47Speaker 2: of just have to play it.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Is that one that Justin and I would be able
- 20:52Speaker 1: to play from our remote locations.
- 20:55Speaker 2: They do have an online version of it. I think
- 20:58Speaker 2: the app costs ten bucks. Bad, right, but yeah, no,
- 21:02Speaker 2: this is not one that is available to play outside
- 21:05Speaker 2: of Starlight Games like their own property. Yeah, I can't
- 21:09Speaker 2: imagine it won't come to that at some point.
- 21:11Speaker 1: It looks pretty basic though, but it is.
- 21:14Speaker 2: So this is actually really heavy. I think it weighs
- 21:16Speaker 2: like twenty two pounds.
- 21:18Speaker 1: And what will somebody find in that boards? The dice?
- 21:23Speaker 2: I mean so if I spload around to the back side,
- 21:26Speaker 2: pulled it.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Up, Oh, it's like the boards.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Trays for all the pieces, it's all like it's all
- 21:31Speaker 2: a modular so it all fits in here, all the cards,
- 21:35Speaker 2: the boards, the dice, the figures, the rule book, you know,
- 21:39Speaker 2: all that stuff.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Now, if anybody's thinking, okay, what has this got to
- 21:42Speaker 1: do with tech, think about it. The characters from Big
- 21:45Speaker 1: Bang Theory, Sheldon. You know, they played they played D
- 21:49Speaker 1: and D.
- 21:50Speaker 2: I remember D and D. They played board games, they
- 21:52Speaker 2: played three D chess, they played all sorts of stuff.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Warlords of if you remember that from the show, which
- 21:57Speaker 2: one Warlords of Ah, it's it's a card it's a
- 22:01Speaker 2: card game that they play that Sheldon. Uh, you know
- 22:07Speaker 2: at the beginning of the series, if you haven't watched it,
- 22:09Speaker 2: the beginning of the series Sheldon's mortal enemy is Will Wheaton. Yes,
- 22:14Speaker 2: and they end up playing They end up playing or
- 22:18Speaker 2: something or something related. But they they made a game
- 22:22Speaker 2: in the show called Warlords of I think you can
- 22:25Speaker 2: buy it. You might be able to buy it. Maybe
- 22:27Speaker 2: not now because the show has been off the air
- 22:28Speaker 2: for a while, but big and being a nerd, right,
- 22:32Speaker 2: everybody loves being like most people love being nerds, but
- 22:36Speaker 2: people in technology are often associated with being nerds.
- 22:40Speaker 1: We are those people, Yeah, we are, we are.
- 22:43Speaker 2: I just have I just happen to be nerdy about
- 22:45Speaker 2: board games. Will. I also bought a bunch of other
- 22:49Speaker 2: stuff too, And that's not the only board game I bought.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Was Will Wheaton in that episode too? I think he was,
- 22:53Speaker 1: wasn't he He's.
- 22:54Speaker 2: He's a recurring character in the entire series.
- 22:56Speaker 1: He is. You know what else has come back? And
- 22:58Speaker 1: I don't know. And I definitely want to give this
- 23:00Speaker 1: to mention and I wanted to mention it last week.
- 23:02Speaker 1: We forgot about it on Max for those that have
- 23:05Speaker 1: HBO Max Silicon Valley. And I don't know if you
- 23:09Speaker 1: ever watched that Sean when that was Oh my gosh,
- 23:11Speaker 1: if you get a chance, you got to watch that
- 23:13Speaker 1: it is. It's about a startup, a tech startup and
- 23:19Speaker 1: all the things they had to go through to get
- 23:20Speaker 1: this startup to happen. And it's a comedy. It's a short,
- 23:24Speaker 1: you know, each episode, I think it's like maybe thirty minutes,
- 23:26Speaker 1: and it's just hilarious. If you get a chance to
- 23:28Speaker 1: check that one out. That show, which was a limited series,
- 23:31Speaker 1: is now back on HBO Max. Not new episodes, just
- 23:35Speaker 1: the old stuff. But I think you'll like it.
- 23:37Speaker 2: So you asked what did that to attack? Right? So yeah.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Gen Con also has their own YouTube channel called gen
- 23:43Speaker 2: Con TV and they post a lot of stuff on
- 23:45Speaker 2: there and they actually do a lot of live playthroughs
- 23:49Speaker 2: and they talk to a lot of people in the industry,
- 23:51Speaker 2: and they were live streaming all throughout gen Con and
- 23:53Speaker 2: doing other events. So check them out gen Con TV
- 23:55Speaker 2: on YouTube. And there are a lot of podcasts out
- 24:01Speaker 2: there that do live play Dungeons and Dragons or Pathfinder
- 24:05Speaker 2: or other Twitch tabletup, barbieues, it's all over the place
- 24:08Speaker 2: Twitch YouTube. Critical Role actually made their own streaming platform
- 24:14Speaker 2: called Beacon, so if you check out Beacon, you'll be
- 24:17Speaker 2: able to see their content there. They're trying to pull
- 24:21Speaker 2: themselves away from the giants stuff streaming, right, they're trying
- 24:25Speaker 2: to pull themselves away from the YouTube and the Twitch
- 24:28Speaker 2: to pull all that content into themselves so they can
- 24:30Speaker 2: have a bit more control over their ads and all
- 24:32Speaker 2: that stuff, which is to be expected because they've become
- 24:36Speaker 2: a multi million dollar a year corporation based off of
- 24:39Speaker 2: playing Dungeons and Dragons.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Wow.
- 24:42Speaker 2: And then they're not the only ones, right, there are
- 24:44Speaker 2: other celebrity D and D podcasts, or Pathfinder podcasts or
- 24:48Speaker 2: other tabletop barbidie podcasts that have almost cult like followings
- 24:52Speaker 2: that can garner seventy to eighty thousand views a week
- 24:57Speaker 2: when they do their life their live podcast.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Where should somebody start, Like they're listening right now, go
- 25:03Speaker 1: I want to do this. Where where do they start?
- 25:05Speaker 1: Could they go to a shop that sells maybe you know,
- 25:08Speaker 1: D and D type games, that type of thing, and
- 25:12Speaker 1: just ask the clerk.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Yeah, so most local game stores will have some some
- 25:17Speaker 2: sort of D and D content. My suggestions to you,
- 25:21Speaker 2: and this is what I did because I had I
- 25:23Speaker 2: played D and D back in high school and it's
- 25:26Speaker 2: very different than what it was like if you played
- 25:27Speaker 2: D and D back in the eighties. And seventies and eighties.
- 25:30Speaker 2: It's a completely different experience. Now. It got a reprise
- 25:33Speaker 2: when Stranger Things came out and they were playing D
- 25:35Speaker 2: D in that game, Like they kind of got a
- 25:37Speaker 2: little bit of a bump from that. But if you're
- 25:39Speaker 2: seriously interested at least trying it, go to your local
- 25:41Speaker 2: game store. They sell a box set called the D
- 25:45Speaker 2: and D Starter Starter set. It's got it's got a
- 25:48Speaker 2: rule book, it's got pre generated characters in it, it's
- 25:50Speaker 2: got dice, it's got maps. You can literally crack open
- 25:54Speaker 2: the box with three or four of your friends and play.
- 25:56Speaker 1: Now I'm wondering.
- 25:57Speaker 2: It tells you how to play, It tells you what
- 25:59Speaker 2: to do. It tells you, hey, these are the characters
- 26:02Speaker 2: you should play, Here's how you should play them, Here's
- 26:05Speaker 2: what they can do. It really lines it all out
- 26:07Speaker 2: for you. And I ran that at gen Con in
- 26:11Speaker 2: twenty sixteen, right, I just bought the box and said,
- 26:15Speaker 2: you know what, let's play it. Let's figure it out,
- 26:17Speaker 2: let's play D D five E. I haven't played this
- 26:19Speaker 2: version because I hadn't played since version three point five,
- 26:23Speaker 2: so back in the late nineties, Yeah, cracked it open.
- 26:27Speaker 2: We sat at a table We found an open table
- 26:29Speaker 2: at gen Con and we just played. I drew it
- 26:32Speaker 2: all out on a wet dry erase map that I'd bought,
- 26:34Speaker 2: like a big grid map that I bought. We just
- 26:37Speaker 2: drew it out with markers and it was so much fun.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Now, is this something that maybe you know a husband
- 26:44Speaker 1: and wife, you know, a boyfriend, girlfriend, whatever, you could play?
- 26:47Speaker 1: Could two people or do you really need to have four?
- 26:51Speaker 2: I remember we.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Used to play with like six.
- 26:53Speaker 2: You could definitely do two people. They make environments and
- 26:56Speaker 2: world worlds for two people. There are some other versions
- 27:02Speaker 2: of D and D D and D Mayhem, which is
- 27:03Speaker 2: a card based game that can play around in the
- 27:05Speaker 2: D and D world. There are two player options that exist,
- 27:08Speaker 2: but there's nothing stopping you from just you and I playing,
- 27:11Speaker 2: or how's being your wife playing? Or you know, but
- 27:14Speaker 2: the benefit is, right you get one or two people involved,
- 27:17Speaker 2: and they say you can't get together every week in person, right,
- 27:20Speaker 2: Well you just pop it online to roll twenty. Now
- 27:22Speaker 2: you can play it from wherever. I play in a
- 27:24Speaker 2: weekly weekly Wednesday night with some of my friends from
- 27:28Speaker 2: high school, right, a couple. You know. I've played with
- 27:31Speaker 2: my brother and his family, his family. I've played with
- 27:34Speaker 2: other friends that have just wanted to play, and it's
- 27:37Speaker 2: just as long as you can have a common interest
- 27:40Speaker 2: in that you can find a place to play it online.
- 27:42Speaker 1: I'm wondering on at gen Con did they show because
- 27:45Speaker 1: it was probably about three months ago somebody had was
- 27:49Speaker 1: marketing a die you know, dice, but it was digital
- 27:54Speaker 1: and you could you know, would light up in the
- 27:56Speaker 1: whole bit and then would land, so you didn't roll
- 27:58Speaker 1: the dice. It would just be on the you know,
- 28:00Speaker 1: in the in the middle of the table and it
- 28:02Speaker 1: would light up and then you would have your your
- 28:04Speaker 1: whatever you rolled there.
- 28:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean you can see those right. They have
- 28:08Speaker 2: those types of things, right, but most people like the
- 28:11Speaker 2: prefer the actual tactile rolling of the dice in their
- 28:13Speaker 2: hands on the table. You can hear it. They're clinking together,
- 28:16Speaker 2: and in the dice tray, those types of things. The
- 28:19Speaker 2: big thing this year was black light reactive dice, so
- 28:22Speaker 2: dice that have eight or illumination or things and then
- 28:27Speaker 2: that react to black light. So if I picked up
- 28:29Speaker 2: actually after the break, I'll go get my dice because
- 28:31Speaker 2: these blue lights will actually make them react pretty well.
- 28:35Speaker 2: But they actually sold a dice tray with black light
- 28:38Speaker 2: LEDs in them.
- 28:39Speaker 1: Oh cool, all right, so you could roll the dice.
- 28:41Speaker 2: In there and see it. But I mean, you can
- 28:44Speaker 2: never have enough dice. Don't let anybody ever tell you
- 28:46Speaker 2: can have enough dice. That's just not true. So you
- 28:49Speaker 2: could buy all of your supplies there, dice, maps, books, maps, right,
- 28:54Speaker 2: you know, I don't know. Gen Con is just is
- 28:57Speaker 2: just a nerd haven where I spent way too much money.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Out of all of the links that you told us,
- 29:03Speaker 1: which is one we should definitely check out.
- 29:07Speaker 2: If you're interested. If you're interested in D and D
- 29:12Speaker 2: and you know somebody that can do five E fifth
- 29:15Speaker 2: edition D and D beyond, D and D Beyond, all right,
- 29:18Speaker 2: that's going to give you access to the source books.
- 29:20Speaker 2: That's going to give you access to the character builder, maps,
- 29:24Speaker 2: homebrew whatever.
- 29:25Speaker 1: All right.
- 29:25Speaker 2: If you're interested in the board games, boardgame Arena dot
- 29:30Speaker 2: com or board game geek dot com, tagin idea of
- 29:32Speaker 2: what type of board game might work for you.
- 29:35Speaker 1: All right, we're going to take a break. We come back.
- 29:37Speaker 1: So imagine Sean, you got that nice studio down there,
- 29:41Speaker 1: You've got everything, and you decide you want to get
- 29:44Speaker 1: a big TV. How about one hundred and fifteen inch television.
- 29:48Speaker 2: Yes, that would fit right about there. I never forget.
- 29:51Speaker 1: I listened to a talk show once. So I was
- 29:53Speaker 1: driving into work in the morning and I heard this
- 29:56Speaker 1: guy on the radio and he was he was an
- 29:58Speaker 1: older man, and he I guess he wasn't very tech savvy.
- 30:02Speaker 1: And somebody had talked about an eighty five inch television
- 30:05Speaker 1: and the guy said, my god, an eighty five inch television.
- 30:09Speaker 1: How big of a wall do you need for that?
- 30:12Speaker 1: I remember, looking at the radio, say eighty five inches. Well,
- 30:19Speaker 1: if you want to get this one hundred and fifteen
- 30:21Speaker 1: inch TV, you'll be surprised at what comes with it.
- 30:23Speaker 1: But the price tag be a little scary. I'll tell
- 30:26Speaker 1: you more about that when we come back. Also a
- 30:28Speaker 1: warning if you're thinking about building a new system with
- 30:30Speaker 1: Intel processing. That's on the way. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm
- 30:34Speaker 1: Sean de Weird. You can find us on the World
- 30:36Speaker 1: Wide Web, but tech talk radio dot com. We'll be
- 30:39Speaker 1: right back, and no fact to tech talk Radio. So
- 30:43Speaker 1: it was recently announced that TCL, which is a manufacturer
- 30:48Speaker 1: of televisions and whatnot, they are going to be putting
- 30:52Speaker 1: out a one hundred and fifteen inch QD Mini led TV.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Now you know a lot we have just justin I
- 31:04Speaker 1: know has talked about his big TV. Sean, you have
- 31:07Speaker 1: a pretty big screen. Mine is a fifty five inch television.
- 31:11Speaker 2: My screen here in the basement is one hundred and
- 31:12Speaker 2: twenty two inch.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Because it's a projection.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I have a BenQ projector ten ADP HDR projector.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Right, so you get that full huge experience. Well, TCL
- 31:25Speaker 1: putting out this one hundred and fifteen inch QD Mini
- 31:28Speaker 1: led TV decided they needed to add something to get
- 31:31Speaker 1: people to buy it. So when you buy this television,
- 31:35Speaker 1: it comes with a ticket to the Super Bowl customers.
- 31:42Speaker 2: TV, Then don't you buy the TV to watch the
- 31:44Speaker 2: supers Right?
- 31:45Speaker 1: Customers could also choose to attend a Hollywood film premiere
- 31:49Speaker 1: or and I love this, or a tech conference, So
- 31:54Speaker 1: I guess you know you go to c you know CES.
- 31:56Speaker 1: Maybe that's the deal. I remember when panis on it
- 32:00Speaker 1: rolled out, it's uh, I want to say it with
- 32:02Speaker 1: one hundred inch television. Me and our buddy Jim who's
- 32:07Speaker 1: no longer with us, we were standing there as they
- 32:09Speaker 1: unveiled Panasawka unveiled this television which had to be professionally
- 32:13Speaker 1: installed in your home, and we're just thinking why it's
- 32:17Speaker 1: just so enormous, But one hundred and fifteen inch. Now,
- 32:20Speaker 1: if you want to buy this TCL television, though, it
- 32:23Speaker 1: will cost you a bit twenty thousand dollars.
- 32:27Speaker 2: And if you need thousand dollars.
- 32:29Speaker 1: Two thousand dollars.
- 32:31Speaker 2: More than like a Kia Forte.
- 32:33Speaker 1: You can buy you could buy what a fifty five
- 32:36Speaker 1: inch TV? Now, that's okay, it's not a QD Mini
- 32:40Speaker 1: led LED, but you can buy a four K you know,
- 32:44Speaker 1: fifty five inch television.
- 32:46Speaker 2: For one hundred and fifty bucks.
- 32:48Speaker 1: That bunt you think is that low? I was going
- 32:50Speaker 1: to say more like two four hundred maybe, Yeah, so.
- 32:54Speaker 2: You can buy you can buy TVs for dirt cheap.
- 32:56Speaker 1: Yeah. Kind of interesting though, how they're they're working on
- 32:59Speaker 1: their mark marketing on that. Now. Speaking of marketing, Intel
- 33:02Speaker 1: has had a little problem with their marketing and it's
- 33:06Speaker 1: it's got a lot of people scared that decided they
- 33:09Speaker 1: wanted to be the first and wanted to have the best,
- 33:12Speaker 1: and those that are wanting to upgrade now are looking
- 33:15Speaker 1: at alternatives. This involves what they're thirteenth and fourteen gen processors.
- 33:22Speaker 2: So yeah, any any CPU that supports the thirteen or
- 33:26Speaker 2: fourteen generation of the CPU is suffering from a major
- 33:32Speaker 2: power issue. It's kind of what do they call it,
- 33:38Speaker 2: the microcode, right, that that's gonna that's confusing to me,
- 33:44Speaker 2: and I just looked this up because I didn't even
- 33:45Speaker 2: know what that meant. Micro code is basically the CPU
- 33:48Speaker 2: telling how much energy to send to every net you know,
- 33:53Speaker 2: see whatever, every silicone piece of silicon in the thing. Right,
- 33:59Speaker 2: it's I think too much power to all those things.
- 34:03Speaker 2: And the longer it does it, the more power degradation
- 34:07Speaker 2: you're going to see in your CPU.
- 34:09Speaker 1: Right.
- 34:09Speaker 2: And it's every thirteenth generation and every fourteenth generation CPU.
- 34:15Speaker 2: That's it, all of them, they've all had.
- 34:18Speaker 1: Yeah. So now there wasn't there was a fix right
- 34:21Speaker 1: that involved I think a BIOS patch on the boards
- 34:25Speaker 1: that were supporting these processors that may be able to
- 34:28Speaker 1: circumvent that. But if the processor was they said that
- 34:32Speaker 1: we're gonna put out a fix, right.
- 34:34Speaker 2: Yeah, So they announced what it was a article written
- 34:37Speaker 2: twenty third so late late July, they announced a fix
- 34:42Speaker 2: that should be available mid August. So basically it's a
- 34:47Speaker 2: BIOS update probably to most major motherboards. So even but
- 34:52Speaker 2: is you is your Are they gonna push out biosome
- 34:56Speaker 2: dates for every version of motherboard to date issues? You know,
- 35:01Speaker 2: there's so many versions of other boards, like that's a
- 35:04Speaker 2: lot of code to rewrite to fix this problem. But
- 35:07Speaker 2: it's crazy because it's so many thirteenth and fourteenth that's
- 35:11Speaker 2: a lot.
- 35:12Speaker 1: And the crazy thing is is Intel is still marketing
- 35:14Speaker 1: their thirteenth and fourteenth gen processors. And you know, I'm
- 35:18Speaker 1: concerned because I've built systems and I built one with
- 35:23Speaker 1: fourteenth gen and as far as I know, they've had
- 35:28Speaker 1: issues yet. But I'm going to have to go as
- 35:29Speaker 1: soon as this bios update is going to be available,
- 35:32Speaker 1: i have to go look at it because this could
- 35:34Speaker 1: be a problem. But they're still selling them now. And
- 35:38Speaker 1: now what Intel is doing is saying, well, what we're
- 35:40Speaker 1: going to do is we're going to extend the warranty
- 35:42Speaker 1: on the processors. I think by another year. I'm not
- 35:46Speaker 1: sure how they're they're head so those that are nervous
- 35:49Speaker 1: about buying a thirteen fourteenth gen processor now will have
- 35:52Speaker 1: that extra security.
- 35:54Speaker 2: Yeah. So Tom's hardware is a great web resources you
- 35:57Speaker 2: ever interested in tech. They're reporting that the bug causes
- 36:00Speaker 2: irreversible degradation of the impacted processors. Basically, it's frying the
- 36:05Speaker 2: process from the inside out. It's too much electricity is
- 36:07Speaker 2: frying the circuits, right, and that the fix, the fix
- 36:11Speaker 2: that they're going to push won't fix the degordator, won't
- 36:14Speaker 2: fix the problem once it's happened, right.
- 36:15Speaker 1: If it's already damaged, it damaged.
- 36:17Speaker 2: Yeah, if it's already damaged, it's not going to fix
- 36:19Speaker 2: the damaged parts of the processor. So, I mean, it's
- 36:24Speaker 2: really hard to say why Intel hasn't issued in recall.
- 36:27Speaker 1: Yeah, well you remember one time they've done that. Before
- 36:31Speaker 1: they did that, it was one of their Penniem chips.
- 36:33Speaker 1: If you remember that, they did a recall, and that's
- 36:36Speaker 1: that's what happened. The eventually all of them had to
- 36:39Speaker 1: be sent back. And I'm kind of wondering if if
- 36:41Speaker 1: they're concerned of how this would affect their bottom line
- 36:46Speaker 1: in this case, well, I.
- 36:47Speaker 2: Think there's too many machines. I think I think they
- 36:50Speaker 2: would think my thoughts are right. Okay, how many places
- 36:53Speaker 2: are running these higher end fourteen gens, how many systems
- 36:58Speaker 2: are running these, and how many systems these are support
- 37:00Speaker 2: They're not gonna recall this because they would lose so
- 37:02Speaker 2: much stake in the AI market, right, yeah, all of that, Like, yeah,
- 37:07Speaker 2: they have their their professional and you know, GP CPUs
- 37:10Speaker 2: and stuff. But there are probably a lot of systems
- 37:13Speaker 2: supported that are running fourteenth or thirteenth or fourteen gen
- 37:16Speaker 2: CPUs that if they recall, that's gonna it's gonna be
- 37:21Speaker 2: the It's gonna be so bad for Intel if they
- 37:22Speaker 2: had to recall.
- 37:23Speaker 1: Yeah. Now, what I have seen is their twelfth gen,
- 37:27Speaker 1: which is a very capable processor. Depending on the board
- 37:30Speaker 1: you get, you know, the processor actually can do very well.
- 37:34Speaker 1: Those are actually going up in price now. And I
- 37:38Speaker 1: think it's because of that uncertainty that people are saying, well,
- 37:42Speaker 1: I'll just you know, I'm just gonna go ahead twelve.
- 37:44Speaker 1: Because the system we're gonna do in the system here
- 37:47Speaker 1: in the studio, you know, we ended up doing Waboontu.
- 37:50Speaker 1: We're probably gonna try Linux Mint twenty two. That system
- 37:53Speaker 1: may just stay the way it is. It's got the
- 37:56Speaker 1: I seven sixty six hundred, but the other system has
- 37:59Speaker 1: to be a place. It's too old. I mean, we're
- 38:01Speaker 1: going back to an I three.
- 38:03Speaker 2: So in that one, I.
- 38:03Speaker 1: Already got the board for it, and I was thinking,
- 38:06Speaker 1: I'll just go with it, Just go with a twelve
- 38:08Speaker 1: twelfth generation is fine, and they don't have to go
- 38:11Speaker 1: with thirteen or fourteen.
- 38:12Speaker 2: And now, yeah, it's only the thirteenth and the fourteenth generation.
- 38:19Speaker 2: There's been no mention of the twelfth generation processors, including
- 38:22Speaker 2: the new twelve nine twelve K suffering from the same issue.
- 38:28Speaker 2: But so for those of you who are techie, right, so,
- 38:32Speaker 2: the twelfth gen processors use the Alder Lake architecture. The
- 38:37Speaker 2: thirteenth and fourteen chip gens used the Raptor Lake, which
- 38:40Speaker 2: is basically just a different architecture of the chip.
- 38:42Speaker 1: So right now, these new AI systems that are available,
- 38:47Speaker 1: they don't even use Intel, do they. I mean, they're
- 38:50Speaker 1: using a completely different snap driver.
- 38:53Speaker 2: They're use it all sorts of stuff they're used. I
- 38:55Speaker 2: mean everybody, everybody is running the top of the line
- 38:58Speaker 2: stuff to get as much horsepower out of these chips
- 39:01Speaker 2: to do all the AI stuff. I'm sure some AI
- 39:04Speaker 2: stuff is built on the Intel. I'm sure you know
- 39:08Speaker 2: am D has probably built stuff on I'm sure they're
- 39:10Speaker 2: all building stuff off AI.
- 39:12Speaker 1: So have you let me ask you, when's the last
- 39:14Speaker 1: time you replaced your mouse my mouse, Yeah.
- 39:22Speaker 2: Three years ago. I'm running the I'm running the twelve
- 39:25Speaker 2: button Razor Naga Trinity Cool, which is RGB lights up,
- 39:31Speaker 2: does all that stuff have you. It's it's the second
- 39:34Speaker 2: one of these I've owned wireless. It is wired. Yeah,
- 39:40Speaker 2: I had a wired razor or, a Ricci they made.
- 39:45Speaker 2: They made a wireless gaming mouse for a while. I
- 39:46Speaker 2: had that from my laptop for a while. Uh, but
- 39:50Speaker 2: I preferred wired.
- 39:51Speaker 1: Advice, Yeah, kind of like I like the wireless, but uh,
- 39:56Speaker 1: you know, we got the I'm trying to remember the
- 39:58Speaker 1: model number. It was a lot mouse and it has
- 40:02Speaker 1: RGB colors on it and it drains a battery pretty quick.
- 40:06Speaker 1: You have the colors and you know, it's all lit
- 40:08Speaker 1: up in the whole bit. And that's the downside to
- 40:11Speaker 1: when you have all those add ons to it if
- 40:13Speaker 1: you're using wireless. Well, the CEO of Logitech, Hanneka Favor
- 40:18Speaker 1: or Fober, is the CEO of the company, and was
- 40:20Speaker 1: doing an interview and talked about the idea of a
- 40:24Speaker 1: forever mouse. And a lot of people have been talking
- 40:28Speaker 1: about this because imagine and you and I we've talked
- 40:31Speaker 1: about subscription models for everything. I don't like the software
- 40:35Speaker 1: subscription model. How we went from you know, I could
- 40:38Speaker 1: own the Adobe software, I could own the Master Suite.
- 40:42Speaker 1: Now you have to do a subscription. How I used
- 40:44Speaker 1: to be able to buy quick Books, you know, and
- 40:47Speaker 1: maybe hold on to it for about three four years.
- 40:50Speaker 1: Then if I wanted a new feature, I would buy
- 40:52Speaker 1: a new version of QuickBooks. You know, generally pretty expensive.
- 40:55Speaker 1: But it wasn't that bad. And then they went to
- 40:59Speaker 1: a subscription model that was rather pricey. I mean get
- 41:02Speaker 1: into about three hundred bucks a year. It's like, why
- 41:04Speaker 1: why you know I had software? I would pay five
- 41:06Speaker 1: hundred dollars and it would last me for three years.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Much better. Well, now, in this interview, they talked about
- 41:13Speaker 1: the idea of a forever mouse, which would be hardware
- 41:17Speaker 1: that you would basically pay one time and then a subscription,
- 41:23Speaker 1: and if that mouse ever failed, you would get a
- 41:27Speaker 1: new mouse because you're paying a subscription. Similar to what
- 41:30Speaker 1: they've done with iPhones. If you buy a phone from Apple,
- 41:33Speaker 1: you always get the updates, you know, paying a little
- 41:35Speaker 1: extra premium on that. Is this something you think that
- 41:39Speaker 1: would kick off or do you think I'm thinking it's
- 41:41Speaker 1: too competitive a marketplace with razor and you know crucial
- 41:46Speaker 1: of course, there I should say, and you know, Logitech, there's.
- 41:51Speaker 2: Going to be a revolt at some point. Yeah, at
- 41:53Speaker 2: some point there's gonna be too much, Like you're gonna subscribe,
- 41:58Speaker 2: make subscriptions for everything, like make my monitor subscriptions, Like
- 42:01Speaker 2: well you can only use your monitor from nine pm
- 42:04Speaker 2: to nine am if once you paid twenty bucks a month.
- 42:08Speaker 2: I mean, the idea of a subscription mouse is absurd. Yeah,
- 42:13Speaker 2: hardware degrades, hardware fails, hardware upgrades. It just doesn't make sense.
- 42:19Speaker 2: I think some places took it out of context. Right
- 42:23Speaker 2: the interview, if you want to watch it, it's on
- 42:25Speaker 2: the decoder pod, which is the verbs, the verbs like
- 42:28Speaker 2: web webcast. You could see that she is serious, like
- 42:33Speaker 2: she's like I could see a subscription model happening for
- 42:35Speaker 2: a mouse, And you can tell that she's sincere in
- 42:38Speaker 2: her notions that I could see that happening down the road. Wow,
- 42:41Speaker 2: and that's scary. Yeah, Like, I don't want a subscription mouse.
- 42:45Speaker 2: It does one function.
- 42:47Speaker 1: Wasn't there a backlash to HP and their subscription h god?
- 42:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I have an HP printer right right,
- 42:55Speaker 2: I have an HP laser printer that I bought from Costco.
- 42:57Speaker 2: It works fantastic. I don't have subscription four or I
- 43:00Speaker 2: don't need one. I didn't want that. But you can
- 43:03Speaker 2: pay HP subscriptions for ink. You get ink every month
- 43:07Speaker 2: based on the set priority if you want. But HP
- 43:11Speaker 2: has notoriously been known to say, all right, you canceer
- 43:14Speaker 2: your subscription. Can't use your ink, yeah cancer, your description
- 43:19Speaker 2: can't print, Yeah cancer, your description can't scan, can't facts whatever, Right,
- 43:27Speaker 2: And that's that seems silly, but that's people have to realize,
- 43:30Speaker 2: Like this is not always on the corporations. Okay, people
- 43:36Speaker 2: sign up for this stuff. You are signing up for
- 43:39Speaker 2: a subscription. You know that you go in knowing without
- 43:44Speaker 2: reading the frying print. That's on you, right, If you
- 43:46Speaker 2: go in and don't read the fine print and get
- 43:48Speaker 2: mad when you cancel your subscription, your prayer can't print anymore,
- 43:51Speaker 2: that's on you, Yeah, exactly, That's on you for buying
- 43:54Speaker 2: and enabling these companies because they're making money hand over fists,
- 43:58Speaker 2: because they're selling you a thirty dollars with a thirty
- 44:01Speaker 2: dollars a month subscription that they're making hand over his
- 44:05Speaker 2: money on because you you print four pages a month.
- 44:09Speaker 1: Yeah, you have to remember that too. Some people will say,
- 44:11Speaker 1: I don't understand this because this piece of technology may
- 44:14Speaker 1: be you know, X amount of dollars, but a printer,
- 44:16Speaker 1: generally you find a printer. It's not that expensive because
- 44:19Speaker 1: they got you on the ink and you get you
- 44:22Speaker 1: in the ink and now the subscription exactly. And so
- 44:25Speaker 1: that is something to think about. But it's something that
- 44:27Speaker 1: was brought up. And again you could see that on
- 44:29Speaker 1: the Verge's YouTube page. We get to take another quick break.
- 44:32Speaker 1: We come back. We got more great tech to talk
- 44:33Speaker 1: to you about. I'm Andy Taylor.
- 44:35Speaker 2: I'm trying to word find us on Facebook tech Talkers.
- 44:37Speaker 2: We'll be right back now back to tech talk Radio.
- 44:42Speaker 2: So we are pulling out of the listener hat to
- 44:45Speaker 2: rate for this part of the show.
- 44:47Speaker 1: Well, listener, is it like a big rabbit hat, a big.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Rabbit hat, call us, text us, email us, Facebook us, whatever. Well,
- 44:53Speaker 2: what do you request there and hopefully get you the
- 44:55Speaker 2: answers you want.
- 44:56Speaker 1: Our email address is tech guys at tech talk radio
- 44:59Speaker 1: dot com. And this is how we got these these
- 45:01Speaker 1: these mails. Well one of them was Facebook, but I
- 45:04Speaker 1: thought I'd let you go ahead and share those with.
- 45:06Speaker 2: US so Cecilia and Tucson is a listener, and she says,
- 45:11Speaker 2: my son has a Nintendo Switch and also his own Chromebook.
- 45:15Speaker 2: He wants to stream the switch to play to the
- 45:18Speaker 2: Chromebook and share some of the gameplay. I know nothing
- 45:21Speaker 2: of how to do this kind of stuff. Do you
- 45:23Speaker 2: guys know how this can be done?
- 45:24Speaker 1: Wow? I don't even have to switch.
- 45:27Speaker 2: Hey, I have a switch. It's fun. It's fun. You're
- 45:31Speaker 2: not doing it on a Chromebook. Really, I'm just I'm
- 45:33Speaker 2: just gonna sit put it out there right out. You
- 45:35Speaker 2: could try. Chromebook is its own OS. It has its
- 45:39Speaker 2: own issues with running any type of streaming software. You're
- 45:43Speaker 2: just not gonna get the horsepower you need to do
- 45:44Speaker 2: what you want to do well out of Chromebook. You
- 45:47Speaker 2: can try and if you want to try it, download OBS,
- 45:52Speaker 2: which is a free open it's called Open Broadcaster Software.
- 45:55Speaker 2: It's a free download. You're gonna need to buy a
- 45:57Speaker 2: peripherial to get the output of the switch onto the computer.
- 46:02Speaker 1: That'd be like what a capture card.
- 46:04Speaker 2: You can buy a capture card. So they make HDMI
- 46:07Speaker 2: two USB dongles that you can buy, Uh, google them
- 46:11Speaker 2: on look them up on Amazon. They're relatively and expensive.
- 46:13Speaker 1: El Gatto uh makes a bunch of stuff for that
- 46:16Speaker 1: kind of stuff.
- 46:17Speaker 2: Yeah, El Gotto is great. If you want to pay
- 46:19Speaker 2: a little bit too much money for stuff, you can
- 46:22Speaker 2: find them much cheaper, uh and for the same quality
- 46:26Speaker 2: on Amazon for nameless name nameless brands. But you're gonna
- 46:31Speaker 2: need a HDMI to USB adapter or some other form
- 46:35Speaker 2: of capture card. You're going to need the software. You're
- 46:38Speaker 2: gonna need to have a decent Internet connection, and you're
- 46:42Speaker 2: gonna need to have some video knowledge, right, You're gonna
- 46:44Speaker 2: need to know a lot of times. You can set
- 46:47Speaker 2: it up for automatic and it should run fine, but
- 46:49Speaker 2: you're gonna need to have a Twitch channel or a
- 46:52Speaker 2: YouTube channel, or a Facebook gaming channel or a kick
- 46:56Speaker 2: whatever the new streaming places are, right.
- 46:58Speaker 1: Right do you do you run? You know? I'm wondering
- 47:00Speaker 1: if you're if you wants to swip, you know, stream
- 47:03Speaker 1: some of his gameplay. Could he run into you know,
- 47:07Speaker 1: DRM with the music from the game or the game itself,
- 47:12Speaker 1: the video from the game.
- 47:15Speaker 2: No, I mean maybe I haven't done a lot of
- 47:19Speaker 2: gay game streaming. More often than not, live play is
- 47:23Speaker 2: kind of covered under fair use. You'd have to look
- 47:27Speaker 2: into that But here's the thing. People don't realize how
- 47:33Speaker 2: much work it actually takes to stream content on the internet.
- 47:37Speaker 2: Like everything's oh, I can just play my computer and
- 47:39Speaker 2: in stream. Well, if you don't do any marketing, you're
- 47:43Speaker 2: not gonna get anywhere. Right, If you're not promoting yourself,
- 47:45Speaker 2: you're not gonna get anywhere. If you're not streaming on
- 47:47Speaker 2: a consistent basis, you're not gonna get anywhere. If you're
- 47:50Speaker 2: not streaming content that's popular, you're not gonna get anywhere.
- 47:52Speaker 2: If he wants to stream his own stuff for his
- 47:54Speaker 2: three Facebook friends and his mom on the internet, that's
- 47:57Speaker 2: totally doable. But it's it's a lot of work. People
- 48:02Speaker 2: just don't realize. They're like, oh, it's I want to
- 48:05Speaker 2: be a YouTuber. I want to Like, you have to
- 48:07Speaker 2: have a unique idea. You have to have the wherewithal
- 48:10Speaker 2: to continue continuously create content for that idea without it
- 48:14Speaker 2: becoming mundane and a job, because that's what it is.
- 48:17Speaker 2: It is a job.
- 48:19Speaker 1: Work. You mentioned the content, and I think that's that's
- 48:22Speaker 1: an important thing that we're seeing now too, is so
- 48:26Speaker 1: you stream right, fine, but reels, whether you're creating reels
- 48:29Speaker 1: for Instagram or Facebook or you know, any of the
- 48:32Speaker 1: other sources that are out there creating content aside from
- 48:35Speaker 1: what you're streaming and allowing people to find you that way.
- 48:40Speaker 1: So if they see something they like, oh cool, I'm
- 48:42Speaker 1: going to go check that out.
- 48:43Speaker 2: Yeah, multi platform multiplatforming, right, It's like, you can't. It's
- 48:48Speaker 2: impossible unless you get a niche market, or you hit
- 48:53Speaker 2: it big, or you get retweeted, or you get rated
- 48:57Speaker 2: by a popular streamer, and all of a sudden, you
- 48:59Speaker 2: have thirty thousand people watch your streaming. You have no
- 49:00Speaker 2: idea what's going on? Right, It's so hard to get popular.
- 49:06Speaker 1: Yeah, streaming. Yeah, and a lot of people want to
- 49:09Speaker 1: do that now. All right, So basically what should she do?
- 49:12Speaker 1: Should she? Should you invest in a better laptop or I.
- 49:16Speaker 2: Don't say I would tell her to invest in a
- 49:18Speaker 2: better laptop. Doesn't have to be the fancies and fancy laptops, right,
- 49:23Speaker 2: but it's gonna have to be, you know, probably a
- 49:26Speaker 2: thousand dollars laptop. Bear to do bare minim you would
- 49:30Speaker 2: do bare minimum, right, something that's gonna have enough horsepower
- 49:36Speaker 2: to stream, because you could stream all day long at
- 49:40Speaker 2: two and a half megabit seven to twenty p stream.
- 49:43Speaker 2: But it's gonna look like yeah roud, and it's not
- 49:46Speaker 2: gonna get you anywhere. If you're looking to do ten ADP,
- 49:50Speaker 2: you know ten to fifteen meg, you're gonna need something
- 49:53Speaker 2: that's gonna do it. Plus you need the bandwidth to
- 49:54Speaker 2: do it, so you're gonna need to be likely hardwired.
- 49:57Speaker 2: Wireless is okay. I if you want to suffer a
- 50:00Speaker 2: little bit on your on your quality, you can push
- 50:02Speaker 2: five to five to six seven meg across Wi Fi
- 50:06Speaker 2: and make it look good. It just all depends on
- 50:08Speaker 2: your circumstances and what the content is.
- 50:10Speaker 1: So when when it comes time for her son to stream,
- 50:13Speaker 1: does mom is mom not going to be able to
- 50:15Speaker 1: watch her shows on the streaming channels?
- 50:18Speaker 2: Yeah? Right, So if you if you if you don't
- 50:20Speaker 2: have good internet at home, yeah, and all of a sudden,
- 50:22Speaker 2: your son's streaming tenn ADP at seven or eight meg,
- 50:26Speaker 2: that could if that's eating up your entire band, but
- 50:28Speaker 2: you're not gonna be able to watch the shows.
- 50:29Speaker 1: Yeah, so you better think about that before you go
- 50:33Speaker 1: out and buy that laptop for him, depending.
- 50:35Speaker 2: On but I would recommend having a beefy laptop. A
- 50:39Speaker 2: MacBook Pro would do it too, but those are pricey, right,
- 50:43Speaker 2: a capture card, so you take the HDMI out of
- 50:46Speaker 2: the dock of the switch into that. You just got
- 50:50Speaker 2: to have a little it's a little bit of trial
- 50:51Speaker 2: and error to figure out what you want to do.
- 50:53Speaker 2: But with it, yeah, it's easy enough to point an
- 50:57Speaker 2: OBS encoder to twitch or YouTube or Facebook. It's really easy,
- 51:03Speaker 2: all right. There's a lot of guys. I mean, there's
- 51:05Speaker 2: hundreds and hundreds of guides. You can find it on
- 51:07Speaker 2: YouTube to watch guides. You could live you could watch
- 51:09Speaker 2: somebody live streaming how to do live streaming. So there's
- 51:14Speaker 2: ways to do it, and if you're interested in it,
- 51:16Speaker 2: give it a try, right, But I wouldn't recommend trying
- 51:19Speaker 2: it with a Chromebook. That's just you're just setting yourself
- 51:22Speaker 2: up for frustration, all right, trying to do it on
- 51:25Speaker 2: a Chromebook that has baseline minimum required processing power.
- 51:30Speaker 1: All right. Here's one from Carrie in Anaheim, California, was
- 51:33Speaker 1: said to us SA via our Facebook page. She told
- 51:36Speaker 1: us she's living in a trailer on some property but
- 51:40Speaker 1: can't seem to get a good enough net signal. She
- 51:43Speaker 1: wants to use her phone as a hotspot for her
- 51:46Speaker 1: Roku TV, and she wants to always really that the
- 51:49Speaker 1: best way to do it. And you know, I know
- 51:51Speaker 1: you get out on the road quite a bit, you're
- 51:53Speaker 1: road warrior. Is that a good way to do it?
- 51:56Speaker 1: Is the hot spot to the TV?
- 51:58Speaker 2: Yeah, the hotspot on your phone work if you have
- 52:01Speaker 2: good cell phone service right, right, you have if you
- 52:03Speaker 2: have good five G coverage or even for G L
- 52:07Speaker 2: t E. But if your rural, if you're rural, right,
- 52:11Speaker 2: your only options are either microwave internet or satellite internet.
- 52:16Speaker 1: Like the starlink.
- 52:19Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, they come by various names like Starlink
- 52:21Speaker 2: is obviously SpaceX's platform using the mini cubesets in low orbit,
- 52:28Speaker 2: and that has been widely successful around the world. And
- 52:32Speaker 2: they just actually increased their capacity and decreased their plan
- 52:36Speaker 2: pricing so you can actually get it a little bit
- 52:38Speaker 2: more affordable. Starlink is very good for what it is. Obviously,
- 52:44Speaker 2: there's some reliability issues during heavy like any any platform
- 52:48Speaker 2: that uses satellites, right, heavy rain, weather, snow, right, you
- 52:52Speaker 2: have to be mind of that mindful debt. But you
- 52:56Speaker 2: can probably find like hues net or.
- 52:59Speaker 1: Something like that, or even I was saying, I was
- 53:01Speaker 1: saying in solease, which is the hotspot that combines different
- 53:05Speaker 1: carriers into ones than Oh yeah, you could buy a.
- 53:11Speaker 2: Like a cradle point or a bridge router that will
- 53:14Speaker 2: take simcards from multiple carriers and provides you with cell
- 53:20Speaker 2: called from coverage and bond them together to be the
- 53:22Speaker 2: best internet out of that. Don't expect to do any
- 53:25Speaker 2: gaming or any latency driven applications with that, right streaming
- 53:30Speaker 2: it buffers onto your computer and it plays that way.
- 53:32Speaker 2: That's gonna be fine. You're not doing any gaming off
- 53:34Speaker 2: those types of things.
- 53:35Speaker 1: All right, we got to take another quick break. We'll
- 53:37Speaker 1: come back with more of tech Talk Radio. I'm Aye Taylor,

- 54:22Speaker 2: allow you to customize your home screen. It's going to
- 54:26Speaker 2: allow you to set more rules and automations. It's just
- 54:29Speaker 2: going to make things a little more streamlined.
- 54:30Speaker 1: Where can we find out more about why whys dot com?
- 54:33Speaker 2: All right? On their homepage. You can just click on
