- 0:00Speaker 1: Running sneakers are different than sneakers that you might wear
- 0:03Speaker 1: to do strength training, to a hit class, to do spinning. Yes,
- 0:08Speaker 1: you can wear them for some of those activities, but
- 0:11Speaker 1: different activities require support in different ways. Is it just
- 0:29Speaker 1: me or is this cold getting to be a little much?
- 0:35Speaker 1: Emily and Body here bringing you another installment of Hurdle

- 0:55Speaker 1: Wednesdays with Hurdle Moment, my goal is to get just
- 0:58Speaker 1: a little bit more grand. On Wednesday's I dive into
- 1:02Speaker 1: my mission to inspire you to be your best self,
- 1:05Speaker 1: move with intention, and have some fun along the way
- 1:08Speaker 1: by talking through either commonly asked listener questions or just
- 1:12Speaker 1: topics that I myself have been dealing with on the regular,
- 1:16Speaker 1: either as an entrepreneur or training for a marathon, or
- 1:20Speaker 1: in my personal life or whatever the list goes on. Today,
- 1:24Speaker 1: I am chatting to you about running sneakers Now. There
- 1:28Speaker 1: are a few great things about running. Whether you love
- 1:31Speaker 1: it or you can't stand it that you cannot deny. Firstly,
- 1:35Speaker 1: it can help you keep in shape. Science shows also
- 1:38Speaker 1: that it helps you live longer, and it requires very
- 1:42Speaker 1: little equipment. You know the basics, like a good pair
- 1:45Speaker 1: of shorts for girls, a great sports spra and of
- 1:49Speaker 1: course the right pair of sneakers. Now, picking the very
- 1:52Speaker 1: best running shoes for you, though, can seem arduous. The
- 1:56Speaker 1: market is huge. I think I wrote an article a
- 1:59Speaker 1: couple of years ago about how to choose running sneakers,
- 2:02Speaker 1: and I found this one statistic that pin the industry
- 2:06Speaker 1: at a value of thirteen billion dollars. Feels a little
- 2:10Speaker 1: like doctor Eagle saying that, to be honest, running shoes
- 2:14Speaker 1: come in all shapes, sizes, withs looks prices. They can
- 2:19Speaker 1: accommodate different foot types something we'll get into in a minute.
- 2:22Speaker 1: The possibilities are endless. It goes without saying that the
- 2:26Speaker 1: question how do I pick the right shoe? Or what
- 2:28Speaker 1: sneakers should I be wearing? Or what sneakers are those?
- 2:31Speaker 1: These are among the most popular questions I get in
- 2:35Speaker 1: my DMS, which probably makes sense because I likely have
- 2:39Speaker 1: upward of seventy pairs somehow tucked inside my crazy apartment. Today,
- 2:44Speaker 1: I'm talking you through the biggest mistakes you might be
- 2:47Speaker 1: making when you're buying new sneakers and what you need
- 2:50Speaker 1: to know before you swipe your card at checkout before
- 2:54Speaker 1: we get into that. Shout out to Hurdle Moments sponsor
- 2:56Speaker 1: this week Beam Now. Beam makes meticulously extracted natural CBD
- 3:01Speaker 1: products for wellness, rest, and athletic recovery. No THHC required.
- 3:07Speaker 1: I regularly use their The One tincture and also their
- 3:11Speaker 1: Fixer CBD salve, and trust me, the salve is really
- 3:15Speaker 1: what sold me. I use it most often immediately post
- 3:18Speaker 1: run when I'm on the floor of my apartment with
- 3:20Speaker 1: my thera gun and some resistance fans, trying to stretch
- 3:24Speaker 1: and recover and just put back together my life. And
- 3:27Speaker 1: I love to use the salve on my lower back
- 3:30Speaker 1: and you get like this really enjoyable, slightly tingly sensation
- 3:34Speaker 1: that just feels like I am giving my body, my
- 3:38Speaker 1: life a little bit of glove. They are offering Hurdle

- 3:59Speaker 1: with that, it's time to talk about running shoes at
- 4:01Speaker 1: Emily a body at Hurdle Podcast. Have a hurdle moment
- 4:04Speaker 1: of your own to share, want to say Hi, have
- 4:06Speaker 1: running shoe questions? Hit me with whatever you'd like. It's
- 4:10Speaker 1: Emily at Hurdle dot us over email. And with that,
- 4:14Speaker 1: let's get to hurdling running sneaker buying mistakes again. I
- 4:27Speaker 1: get questions about this all of the time. For the
- 4:31Speaker 1: first like year or two of running a slew of
- 4:34Speaker 1: half marathons, probably even up until my first marathon, I was,
- 4:38Speaker 1: without a doubt wearing the wrong running sneakers. For a
- 4:42Speaker 1: few reasons. I was making a lot of the mistakes
- 4:45Speaker 1: that we're about to dive into. The first mistake wearing
- 4:49Speaker 1: the wrong size sneaker. I myself wear a ten women's
- 4:54Speaker 1: street shoe. I run in at least a ten point
- 4:58Speaker 1: five sneaker, and that size does vary a little bit
- 5:02Speaker 1: brand to brand. Now, the reason for that is when
- 5:05Speaker 1: you are running, when you are out there pounding the pavement,
- 5:09Speaker 1: as you can imagine, with that repetitive motion, your foot
- 5:12Speaker 1: is going to swell a little bit, especially the longer
- 5:16Speaker 1: that you're on the move, So to accommodate that swelling,
- 5:19Speaker 1: That is why experts will conventionally suggest that you size
- 5:24Speaker 1: up in your running shoe. Again, I size up a
- 5:27Speaker 1: half size. I know some individuals that size up a
- 5:29Speaker 1: full or even more. It is seriously on a case
- 5:33Speaker 1: by case basis. A popular question, how will I know
- 5:36Speaker 1: if I'm wearing the wrong size running shoe? Well, a
- 5:39Speaker 1: few indicators. One, some foot pain is certainly inevitable, and
- 5:44Speaker 1: also the ever popular black toenail situation. If your shoes
- 5:49Speaker 1: are too small in the toe box, you'll get a
- 5:53Speaker 1: lot of that bumping up against the front of your shoe,
- 5:55Speaker 1: which will lead to those black and blue toes that
- 5:58Speaker 1: runners love oh so much. I'll be real. I used
- 6:01Speaker 1: to give them a lot when I first started running. Again,
- 6:03Speaker 1: when I was wearing the wrong size shoe, especially after
- 6:07Speaker 1: a marathon, it became a lot less frequent. I think
- 6:10Speaker 1: I actually haven't lost a toenail. This is cute in
- 6:15Speaker 1: I don't know years, and that's because again, sizing is important.
- 6:20Speaker 1: I also find when it comes to training shoes versus
- 6:23Speaker 1: running shoes. I might stay more true to sized in
- 6:26Speaker 1: a training shoe if I'm just doing some lifting in it,
- 6:29Speaker 1: versus again that constant pounding motion when it comes to
- 6:32Speaker 1: a running sneaker. I'll mention this a few times over
- 6:34Speaker 1: the episode today, But the best way for you to
- 6:37Speaker 1: get checked out as to what size you should be
- 6:40Speaker 1: wearing is by checking in with an expert, whether that's
- 6:42Speaker 1: at a running specialty shop. If you're talking to an
- 6:45Speaker 1: orthopedist or a physical therapist, they'll be able to take
- 6:48Speaker 1: a look at your foot and tell you what might
- 6:51Speaker 1: be the best sizing for you. Mistake number two buying
- 6:57Speaker 1: for looks. Oh god, I get so many inquiries asking
- 7:03Speaker 1: me what's the best looking long distance neutral sneaker. Okay,
- 7:08Speaker 1: first of all, a buzzword in there that I threw
- 7:10Speaker 1: out for the first time. Neutral. There are different gates,
- 7:14Speaker 1: and gate is essentially a fancy word for your manner
- 7:17Speaker 1: of walking or how your foot moves. You can have
- 7:20Speaker 1: a neutral gate, which means that your foot hits the
- 7:22Speaker 1: ground evenly as you run. It doesn't pronate or supinate.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Those are the other two buzzwords when it comes to
- 7:29Speaker 1: foot type. If you pronate, that means when you walk
- 7:32Speaker 1: or you run, your weight tends to be more on
- 7:34Speaker 1: the inside of your foot, and if you supinate, that
- 7:37Speaker 1: means when you walk or you run, the weight tends
- 7:39Speaker 1: to be more on the outside of your foot. Now,
- 7:42Speaker 1: pronation is definitely a natural movement of the foot. I
- 7:45Speaker 1: think I've read statistics that generally a normal and I'm
- 7:49Speaker 1: using air quotes here pronation of the foot means that
- 7:52Speaker 1: it's rolling inward about fifteen percent. It then comes into
- 7:56Speaker 1: complete contact with the ground. You're cool to support your
- 7:59Speaker 1: body weight without any problems, and then it goes back
- 8:02Speaker 1: into the gate cycle and do your next step. When
- 8:05Speaker 1: you over pronate, you're seeing more than that fifteen percent role,
- 8:09Speaker 1: and that's when you can start to experience some issues
- 8:12Speaker 1: up the chain, whether that's ankle pain that then comes
- 8:14Speaker 1: up to your hips and then your back, and you know,
- 8:16Speaker 1: before you know it, it's all kind of tumbling over
- 8:18Speaker 1: and over. So you want to know, do I pronate,
- 8:21Speaker 1: do I supinate? Do I have a neutral foot? Again?
- 8:24Speaker 1: This is something that you can determine by going into
- 8:27Speaker 1: a run specialty shop, hopping out a treadmill, having one
- 8:30Speaker 1: of the employees there take a look at your feet
- 8:34Speaker 1: and see how they're hitting the ground. There are sneakers
- 8:37Speaker 1: that are made for all of these different foot types,
- 8:40Speaker 1: but science shows what's most important is rather than buying
- 8:45Speaker 1: buy foot type. If you happen to be someone who
- 8:48Speaker 1: does over pronate and you put on a neutral shoe
- 8:50Speaker 1: and it feels good for you, comfort is the most
- 8:53Speaker 1: important factor. That's what the research shows. Again, you need
- 8:57Speaker 1: to shop based on comfort, not based on what you
- 9:01Speaker 1: see someone wearing on Instagram. The best kind of fitness,
- 9:06Speaker 1: the best kind of movement, is one that you can
- 9:08Speaker 1: do without pain, without injury. So put that aside when
- 9:12Speaker 1: you're shopping and look for a style or a brand
- 9:15Speaker 1: that makes you feel your best. Now, I'm not saying
- 9:18Speaker 1: that there aren't options out there that are both esthetically
- 9:21Speaker 1: pleasing and great for your foot. They exist, trust me,
- 9:24Speaker 1: I have many of them for me. Some of my
- 9:27Speaker 1: go to neutral styles that I love their look. I
- 9:30Speaker 1: wear the Nike Vamo, I wear the A six DNA
- 9:33Speaker 1: Fyte often New Balance ten eighty. And when it comes
- 9:38Speaker 1: to racing, I ran Chicago in the Nike Next percent
- 9:42Speaker 1: and I'm currently testing something I can't quite reveal just yet,
- 9:47Speaker 1: but trust me, there are a few carbon plated options
- 9:51Speaker 1: on their way to market, all of which are targeted
- 9:54Speaker 1: at a neutral gate and have a lot to offer.
- 9:56Speaker 1: I just said another buzzword which I feel like I
- 9:59Speaker 1: should explain, carbon plate. And basically what the carbon fibreplate
- 10:02Speaker 1: does is it's embedded in the midsole foam of a
- 10:05Speaker 1: shoe and provides like a super responsive feel. It helps
- 10:10Speaker 1: to propel runners forward while still allowing the shoe to
- 10:14Speaker 1: contain super soft cushioning and makes for a really comfortable ride.
- 10:18Speaker 1: I describe when I run in the next person as
- 10:21Speaker 1: like it just feels like that I am super springy,
- 10:24Speaker 1: I'm a little invincible, and I just feel really fast.
- 10:29Speaker 1: All right, back to sneaker buying mistakes. The next mistake
- 10:33Speaker 1: you might make buying sneakers you're not shopping around now
- 10:37Speaker 1: again going into these running specialty shops. I'm a huge fan.
- 10:40Speaker 1: They are so knowledgeable, they have so much wisdom, but
- 10:43Speaker 1: you might not always get the absolute cheapest deal. With
- 10:48Speaker 1: that said, if you do want to shop around, if
- 10:50Speaker 1: you want to save some money, head to the internet,
- 10:52Speaker 1: where all things can be found in all different ways.
- 10:55Speaker 1: There is one catch with that, though. The beauty of
- 10:58Speaker 1: going into a store is that oftentimes they have some
- 11:02Speaker 1: sort of buy it, love it, or return it guarantee,
- 11:05Speaker 1: which means that even if you have worn the sneaker
- 11:08Speaker 1: on a slew of runs you've done twenty miles forty miles,
- 11:12Speaker 1: if you're not sold on the shoe. In that case,
- 11:14Speaker 1: you can still take it back and get a refund,
- 11:17Speaker 1: Whereas if you are buying a sneaker from a vendor
- 11:20Speaker 1: like Amazon, I have a hunch that they're not going
- 11:23Speaker 1: to offer you that same flexibility if you will. The
- 11:27Speaker 1: next popular mistake when buying running shoes is that you're
- 11:30Speaker 1: not buying them often enough. I have a lot of
- 11:34Speaker 1: sneakers in my apartments, so I have personally experienced a
- 11:37Speaker 1: lot of different iterations of popular running shoes, which means
- 11:42Speaker 1: when I'm out there in Central Park or at the
- 11:44Speaker 1: gym and I see someone running in sneakers that are
- 11:48Speaker 1: years and years old, I cringe a little bit because
- 11:51Speaker 1: all I can do is wonder just how much where
- 11:55Speaker 1: do they have on them. The golden rule is that
- 11:57Speaker 1: shoes should be replaced every three five hundred miles, and
- 12:01Speaker 1: the best way to keep track of that is either
- 12:03Speaker 1: with an app, if you use Strava, if you have
- 12:06Speaker 1: an Apple watch, if you sink your garment. All of
- 12:08Speaker 1: these different wearables will give you summaries of how much
- 12:12Speaker 1: mileage you're accruing over time. You can also look at
- 12:15Speaker 1: the sneaker and see visible signs of wear. If you
- 12:18Speaker 1: notice on the forefoot or on the heel there's an
- 12:20Speaker 1: excessive amount of wear, then these are big signs that
- 12:24Speaker 1: it's time to maybe spoilte for a new pair. Also,
- 12:27Speaker 1: those signs of wear might be able to tell you
- 12:30Speaker 1: something about your gate cycle. Again, if you do see
- 12:33Speaker 1: excessive wear on certain parts of a sneaker and you're
- 12:36Speaker 1: a little unsure of what that means, bring those sneakers
- 12:39Speaker 1: into a running specialty shop, a physical therapist's office and
- 12:42Speaker 1: get some input as to what areas you could be
- 12:44Speaker 1: working on to strengthen your stride and more evenly, wear
- 12:47Speaker 1: through those sneakers, and, last, but not least, the final
- 12:51Speaker 1: mistake you might be making when buying running shoes is
- 12:55Speaker 1: not doing it. Listen, running sneakers are different than that
- 13:00Speaker 1: you might wear to do strength training, to a hit class,
- 13:04Speaker 1: to do spinning. Yes, you can wear them for some
- 13:08Speaker 1: of those activities, but different activities require support in different ways.
- 13:12Speaker 1: For example, Nike, you just released a shoe called the
- 13:15Speaker 1: Super Rep. It highlights grooves on the sole at the
- 13:18Speaker 1: toe which create flexibility for things like push ups and
- 13:22Speaker 1: planks and things that aren't necessary for running. This is
- 13:27Speaker 1: a sneaker that's not meant to be worn for miles
- 13:31Speaker 1: over miles, but again, it's great as a circuit training, hit,
- 13:34Speaker 1: short run, other fast paced exercise kind of sneaker on
- 13:38Speaker 1: the run. You're looking for something that really caters to
- 13:41Speaker 1: your foot type, do yourself a favor and save up
- 13:45Speaker 1: for a few different types of sneakers for a few
- 13:48Speaker 1: different activities, including different types of running. If money is
- 13:53Speaker 1: what's holding you back, I get it. I've been there.
- 13:55Speaker 1: One of my go to strategies when I'm saving up
- 13:58Speaker 1: for something or they it is a new pair of sneakers,
- 14:01Speaker 1: or maybe it's something a little bit bigger, like a
- 14:04Speaker 1: trip to Italy. I put aside a certain amount of
- 14:08Speaker 1: money every month for the thing it is that I'm after.
- 14:12Speaker 1: This way, it might seem small at the time, but
- 14:15Speaker 1: after a few months you have exactly what you need
- 14:18Speaker 1: to go for exactly what you want, and in doing this,
- 14:21Speaker 1: you establish this want as a priority. The most important
- 14:25Speaker 1: piece of advice I can offer you when it comes
- 14:28Speaker 1: to buying running sneakers again, is trust your gut and
- 14:33Speaker 1: really go based on feel. I have logged plenty of
- 14:36Speaker 1: miles and sneakers I didn't necessarily love the look of
- 14:40Speaker 1: because I knew that they were the right fit for
- 14:42Speaker 1: my foot. If you have any other questions about what
- 14:46Speaker 1: to do when it comes to buying running sneakers, you're
- 14:48Speaker 1: looking for some help, I am here to guide you
- 14:51Speaker 1: the best that I can. My credentials in this area. Again,
- 14:54Speaker 1: I am an eight time marathon or. I've run a
- 14:56Speaker 1: slew of half marathons. I am also a United Endurance
- 15:00Speaker 1: Sports Coaching Academy certified run coach. I've talked to countless
- 15:03Speaker 1: experts about this specific subject, and I'm just trying to
- 15:06Speaker 1: give you the best information I can to make an
- 15:09Speaker 1: informed decision when it comes to outfitting your feet. And
- 15:13Speaker 1: I'm a little curious to know what sneakers are you
- 15:15Speaker 1: running in, What do you love, what don't you love?
- 15:18Speaker 1: What have you used before that you're not using anymore?
- 15:21Speaker 1: All the things? Hit me up over on Instagram. It's
- 15:23Speaker 1: at Hurdle podcast at Emily a Baddie. I want to
- 15:26Speaker 1: hear all about it, and with that, another hurdle conquered.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Catch you guys next time.
