Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Andrew Dickens: Highlights of the Future of New Zealand debate
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So I'm Andrew Dickinson. I'm the filling guy, and I'm
- 0:01Speaker 1: filling in for Ryan Bridge, and I'm filling in all week,
- 0:03Speaker 1: and I'm doing three days next week and three days
- 0:05Speaker 1: the week after. And the reason for that is that
- 0:07Speaker 1: Ryan is preparing to do telly stuff with Harold now.
- 0:11Speaker 1: And last night he was doing the first of the
- 0:13Speaker 1: big ones. It was a 90-minute thing called The Future
- 0:16Speaker 1: of New Zealand. Now, it had politicians. It had seven politicians. Yeah,
- 0:20Speaker 1: we had some politicians. But the big thing about this,
- 0:22Speaker 1: the difference was all the other people, all the business leaders,
- 0:24Speaker 1: all the entrepreneurs, all the tech bros were all having
- 0:27Speaker 1: their say about the future of New Zealand. There was
- 0:29Speaker 1: even a dancing robot. And to see Ryan Bridge dancing
- 0:33Speaker 1: with a dancing robot on telly was actually quite some sight.
- 0:36Speaker 1: So here are some highlights if you haven't seen it.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Of course, after Jack Tame suckered us into the billionaires
- 0:42Speaker 1: moral debate, Tamitha Paul, the Green, had some ideas. She reckons, obviously,
- 0:46Speaker 1: that billionaires are immoral.
- 0:48Speaker 2: I think being a billionaire is immoral. Billionaires don't just
- 0:51Speaker 2: get there because they're better than anybody else. Often they
- 0:54Speaker 2: are utilising public infrastructure to allow them to innovate. They
- 0:58Speaker 2: are utilising government grants.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Meanwhile, Mr John Key was there as well
- 1:02Speaker 1: and he thought it was nuts. If we're going to
- 1:04Speaker 1: sit there and say, oh, we're going to celebrate the
- 1:06Speaker 1: warriors and the all blacks who are sports people or
- 1:09Speaker 1: artists or whatever. Oh, but if you've built a world-class
- 1:12Speaker 1: space company like Peter Beck, oh, that's morally offensive. That
- 1:16Speaker 1: is nuts. OK, so I talked about the dancing robot, right? Well,
- 1:20Speaker 1: there was a futurist there by the name of Francis
- 1:22Speaker 1: Valentine who said that Kiwis are going to have to
- 1:24Speaker 1: get used to robots living amongst us. We're going to
- 1:26Speaker 1: have to get used to Ryan Bridge dancing with the robot.
- 1:29Speaker 3: A lot of it's already here. Flying cars, there are
- 1:31Speaker 3: a number of certified companies now. There's more than 25
- 1:34Speaker 3: around the world. Humanoids, we're seeing a really huge rise
- 1:37Speaker 3: in humanoids. And then there's this exponential plan to grow.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Somebody's got to stop those humanoids from breeding.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Hello.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Meanwhile, we had some more of that crazy... That crazy...
- 1:49Speaker 1: word-heavy nutsness from Matua Shane.
- 1:51Speaker 4: The gouging, villainous ways of the Gentailers, which is not
- 1:54Speaker 4: only beggaring, beggaring businesses, but it's leading to de-industrialisation. I
- 1:59Speaker 4: really respect the CEO from Contact Energy turning up tonight.
- 2:03Speaker 4: I hope he still talks to me after we've split
- 2:04Speaker 4: his business in half.
- 2:07Speaker 1: The Shakespeare of New Zealand, and the pollies laid out
- 2:09Speaker 1: their vision for New Zealand.
- 2:10Speaker 3: We want a New Zealand where hard work gets you ahead.
- 2:13Speaker 3: We can't unleash New Zealand's potential if we keep cutting
- 2:16Speaker 3: it down at the knees.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Everyone has a home, our tamariki have clean water, have
- 2:21Speaker 1: access to prosperous pathways.
- 2:23Speaker 2: We need political consensus on infrastructure, health, education.
- 2:26Speaker 4: A future where we've got a reservoir of wealth because
- 2:30Speaker 4: our savings have expanded.
- 2:31Speaker 2: My mokopuna will stay here, they will be raised here
- 2:34Speaker 2: and I want that for all of our mokopuna. We
- 2:36Speaker 2: have to celebrate success, not just punish it with more taxes.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Okay, well the reaction online was super positive. There was
- 2:44Speaker 1: an old socialist down in the South Island who used
- 2:46Speaker 1: to be a talkback star with the first name Alan.
- 2:48Speaker 1: And he wrote, what a future.
- 2:50Speaker 4: Wow.
- 2:50Speaker 1: At a time when New Zealand is spiritually bankrupt, along
- 2:53Speaker 1: comes a program like this, The Future of New Zealand,
- 2:55Speaker 1: a bland title for the most uplifting thing I have
- 2:58Speaker 1: ever experienced, featuring a bunch of people I had mostly
- 3:01Speaker 1: never heard of before. Vicky wrote, this is the stuff
- 3:05Speaker 1: we need to hear. Inspiring stuff, not personality, you know,
- 3:08Speaker 1: bitch fests that we normally have with our leaders debate.
- 3:11Speaker 1: So congratulations, Ryan.
- 3:13Speaker 3: For more from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge, listen live
